We try to keep things fresh, it’s not our fault nobody in SF is any good at climbing Genesis Spire.

We like to farm the groups that try, but when nobody comes, we get bored and have to open up Stonemist.

To be clear, it was late, we were bored, and it was way more fun to stand on top of a tower taking potshots at SM than to actually be productive in any way. We wanted you guys to try and climb the tower but instead you just ran around in circles at the bottom for the better part of half an hour.

I think even if we keep winning like this it’ll be a week or two longer before HoD is in a position to move up. Obviously we’ve gotten transfers so our coverage is better now, but we’ve been playing a strong game outmanned for the previous couple months.

It feels like overall we have mixed opinions about moving up. We’ve been in T7 a long time and I think quite a few people enjoy it here. We’ll see I suppose. I can only hope for a slightly more civil forum thread, since this mess has kept me from posting the last couple months. (I remember DH being nice people, not sure about IoJ)

A friendly cross-server vouch for ET. These guys have been through hell and back, and have always been a solid, respectful bunch to play against. I’d be happy to see you all get a few more to help develop your server.

Oh boy… I thought we were doing better than this in our T7 threads the past couple weeks. Lets keep that chest thumping on the down-low if we can, mkay? All three servers have been variously winning or losing the last few weeks, no need to get all superiority complex in here.

For the first time since we the collapse of TA, Henge of Denravi has gone up a rank this week. Great job to everyone involved!

I’m unfortunately going to be away for fight club tonight as well. There’s a hockey game that I must watch. Perhaps next week (since we’ll be together again).

I’m not one for long speeches, or rambling monologues, but I feel at some point it’s important to give my two cents on the kind of place Henge of Denravi is. The server means a lot to me at this point, and I feel I’ve earned my place in saying my bit.

HoD has been my guild’s home since launch. When we originally joined, we kept mainly amongst ourselves, as we were an old group from GW1 (We number about 60, among which everyone recognizes everyone else). We discovered we were now part of a server that was dominant in WvW with multi-hour cues and a massive coordination effort. Ultimately this encouraged us to keep to ourselves, WvW was impossible to get into, things were beyond our scope and quite frankly we felt like a small stone being thrown into a big pond. So it goes.

As with all things, this wouldn’t last. As with many others on the server, we were shocked to discover one morning that TA had broken up, and our server was now in a freefall. As of 2 weeks later, we often found WvW to be completely empty. Over the next months we would often joke when we captured a tower that whatever group effort we were apart of at the time was “Literally all of Henge”, as our Commanders could rarely muster enough effort to lock down more than 1 or 2 towers at a time. So went our painful months long slide down the ladder.

Throughout this time, we’ve been told, both as a group, and individually, how much fun we weren’t having by a lot of people. We were told our server didn’t understand WvW, that we should bail from the sinking ship, that we just needed to try harder and get “our fairweathers” to play. My personal favourite was one occassion where someone (from a server that shall remain unnamed) told me that a 12-hour defence of DB wasn’t a “fun” WvW activity, and that I needed to learn how the game was supposed to be played. It perhaps goes without saying that we on HoD are quite good at making our own fun, and we stayed upbeat for months through the repeat thrashings.

As the weeks passed, our core of veterans strengthened. We’d see the same people out there every night slogging forward. Our guiding attitude was perhaps best summed up by Sylvester Stallone in Rocky Balboa: “It’s not about how hard you can hit, it’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take, and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done.”

Not only that but my guild got involved. The community was smaller, closer knit. We made connections, we made new friends. This was a place we were happy to be even when we were losing, because you know what? These people got it. No, we didn’t have 400 people in the Mumble at once, but the people who were there were kitten worth talking to.

Now, things have changed, we’re in competitive match-ups. From the months of slogging forward, we’ve improved. Our community is now strong and unified. The guilds on the server may not be massive, but they’re dedicated. I have a list of people I know I can call on any given night to get the job done. Not because they have endless supplies of people but because I’ve seen them get the job done again and again, even when we’re 400k in the hole.

That’s the HoD I’ve cut my teeth on and that’s the HoD I plan on staying with come hell or high water.

Henge of Denravi has a dedicated WvW community who plays their heart out every week. After 13 weeks of straight losses we’ve really come together and have solidified as a group. Anyone who’s not willing to play through the tough match-ups has long since left us. We’ve also got a server website and mumble with a good solid core of people on them.

As a personal note: HoD has a surprisingly large Canadian contingent. Seriously, I’d say around 25% of the regulars are Canadian, I don’t know why.

It’s really sad I haven’t been able to be on as much as I’d like to this week (real life is hard and stuff!) but I’m really glad to see how this matchup is going. Good job to HoD on trying to defend Overlook, I was only there briefly but the rest of y’all were troopers.

We all hope you guys enjoy your stay in Tier 7. This week looks like it’ll be enjoyable. Pending some major transfers down to Tier 8 again, it appears 7/8 will be stable again.

Contrary to all the uninformed belly-aching we hear from the higher tiers about how dead it is down here, I expect you guys will find it to be a good couple of weeks.

that’s nice and all, but could you answer the question?

If you’ve been on Kaineng for longer than three weeks, there wouldn’t be any sort of high horse involved at all. We’ve been in the same position as GoM and HoD are in now. For months, not just for a week.

Not sure what that question or answer has to do with this week’s matchup, though.

FYI, HoD has lost the past 12 weeks by an AVERAGE score of over 360,000 points. That’s not counting this week. I sincerely hope you haven’t been in that same position over the past couple months.

Of note, this is why you see very little complaining by HoD in this thread. No, we’re not thrilled to take a loss like this but we understand exactly how this situation works. Complainers and bandwagoners left our server long ago, and good riddance.

As a sort of almost end of week note to this thread:

Look, no one on our side is saying that you wouldn’t have won this matchup without your recent transfers, maybe it would have been more competitive and maybe everyone would have more fun. Nonetheless, you have won and appear to be moving on to Tier 6.

I suppose to the more important point on guild transfers from many on our server is as follows: Would our side have been happy if we had gotten them instead? On my part I think I know what my answer would be, but regardless imaginably many on the server would have.

This week has largely been a washout for our side, it’ll change next week, but this week is bad. You know that, we know that, it’s common knowledge. Where this becomes an issue for our server is that it makes it very difficult to keep and train new players. The people who don’t know that things are going to improve are the new WvWers, the people who just bought the game, the exact people we’re trying to keep attached to our server to grow our community. It’s hard to explain to them why they should stay on HoD when we take a loss like this, and I think that’s an understandable issue.

So look, yes it is quite likely that your guilds may have moved for valid reasons, yes there may have been a lot of planning that went into it, but the above is why people on our side are upset, plain and simple. When you simply dismiss that as “guilds can’t transfer up or down without complaining” or “you guys are just mad you didn’t get new people”, that trivializes the actual issue and pisses people off. You guys, as prior victims of this should understand, and I imagine you likely do. So no, I’m not complaining, I get it, I really do. But as a personal request, please keep that in mind when you hear people from other servers upset about washout weeks. Their communities are getting a little bit screwed over, and they may just want somewhere to air the fact that they feel helpless over it.

Well, “best in WvW” means nothing when it’s only temporary. And there’s a huge risk of that while free transfers are up, so I wouldn’t start getting my hopes up.

This is ultimately correct.

Absolutely best case scenario, assuming that you were currently the best server in NA (I’m making no statement on whether this is remotely near true or not), it would take a bare, likely unrealistic, minimum of two months to rise up the rankings to T1. Through that whole time you’d have to have some perfect storm of continued population gain while not losing your existing large guilds.

As we’ve seen time and again, if you lose your momentum, you start getting transfers away at a rapid pace. In the current environment, it appears unlikely that any server can advance 6 tiers without running into major roadblocks along the way, which would further slow any progression to T1.

I know in some ways I actually -hope- Kaineng suffers a severe beating so that anyone who isn’t truly loyal will leave the Server. I miss the “Family Atmosphere” that Kaineng had for the longest time…it was somewhat insular in that we were suspicious of “outsiders”, but for each other we would fight to the death to try and help each other. I can’t count the number of times since those days I’ve been “Left behind” by groups, allowed to die when it was easily preventable, and just all around treated as “One among many.” I look forward to the “Good ol’ Days”…only hopefully with opponents we are more on equal terms with.

I remember someone on here from DR expressed the exact same sentiment, almost word for word, in the thread we had with them. I actually worry more than a little bit that I’ll find myself saying the same thing one day.

Point is, don’t leave our server as it’s just another faceless opponent who got the jump on us perhaps using new tactics or maybe just shear numbers but who can also do little to stop what is fun in situations like this and is something we’ve always known at heart here in GoM… Get with your people, pick the fights when you can while always staying tight, mobile, and ignorant to anything but the kill count until the time is right to pick up objectives.

I’m sure HoD will be happy to join with us in obliging this weeks mole hill called Kain.

We’ve all had this attitude for some time. As before, hopefully you all don’t lose too many to transfers and we can get back down to a real fight next week. Unfortunately for many servers, one good stomping can cost them a lot of their player base and they have a hard time recovering (Our good friends at SF seem to have been a victim to this. Some may recall them absolutely freight-training us some weeks prior to their fall to T8)

Unfortunately, as when DR rocketed up the rankings a couple weeks before, there are a number of people in this thread who seem to have no respect for their situation and just want to relish their victory. Don’t let them get you down, they’ll be gone on Friday hopefully.

From HoD here, even losing, it’s been a fun fight.

If there’s one thing we know how to do on HoD it’s laugh in the face of a brutal loss. Anyone who thinks that this has any effect on our core morale is sorely mistaken.

It’s only been the past couple weeks we’ve been able to hold anything. Previously we had to get joy from coating supply camps in siege and making piles of bodies. We’ll be happy to do it again, it’ll be like an old-time reminiscing thing, I may bust out my old low-level armor and everything.

So we expected this week. No one can say that we didn’t see it coming. We’ll be clawing back our supply camps and towers as much as we can and doing what we always do on HoD; fighting tooth and nail for every scrap of real estate.

GoM friends: Welcome to the boat we’ve been in for quite some time. It’ll pass after this week and then we can get back to business if we don’t get sent down to T8. Hope you guys don’t lose too many to transfers.

SF, just wanted to say that I’ll really miss this match-up. I imagine we haven’t seen the last of each other, and it’s unfortunate that one of us seems to have to fall to T8 to make room for Kaineng. I’m looking forward to the point where we meet again.

GoM, it’s been a good couple of weeks with you guys as well. It looks like we may be up against you folks with Kaineng next week. I imagine we’ll all be having an ’’interesting’’ time.

So it appears to have a bit of a morale problem in this thread. I know we’re getting beat this week guys, but this is FAR from our worst performance over the past 3 months. I know it stings a little bit more, since we were doing so well last week, but this is far from the days when we were locked to 1 tower and 1 supply camp in BL at the busiest time of the week.

I clearly can’t force anyone not to take a PVE-cation for the next 2 weeks, but it’ll be important to keep things up as much as possible. If we beat SF this week, we likely stay in T7, if we hang on next week, we likely end up with a GoM, HoD, AR/NSP T7. It’ll be a tough couple of weeks, but we just need to hold ’er together a little longer.

Decisions, decisions. Aw, heck, I’m going to go with the first one. Why don’t you tell me all about how T7 and 8 are irrelevant. Make sure your essay specifically addresses server transfers and bandwagoning, and make sure to cite your sources. (Sample argument: Tier 8 is irrelevant because no guilds ever transfer down there and rankings are and always will be stable)

I’m really excited for the rest of this week but am worried about next round. No offence to Kaineng, but when they come up they’ll likely throw off the balance of T7 substantially.

Yes. A week long battle in which holding that keep makes an impact.

We happen to be having one of those right now, check it for yourself http://mos.millenium.org/matchups#NA. It’s certainly been a fun week, probably one of my favorites. Less to do with the score though and more to do with GoM and SF, both of whom I enjoy fighting.

Clearly we have a difference of opinion on this, but I can assure you of one thing. A large number of players enjoy it in the lower tiers. We have strong, close knit communities. Our guilds mostly number under 100, and regulars recognize most of the WvW population on any given night. Sufficed to say, we have fun.

It’s not about winning, it’s about having a chance to win. It’s about having a fair fight, not 20 people holding against 100 in a losing cause, and then patting yourself on the back about how fun it is to hold onto one keep. I mean, if THAT’s the most fun you’ve had in WvW that really should tell you something.

I’ve been on HoD doing WvW since BWE1, when we actually also sucked at WvW, so you’ll understand that my experiences in WvW span the gauntlet. I also remember Tier 1 well from during the TA days. Without a shadow of a doubt, this was more fun than anything that was going on at the time.

What does it say about me?

That I think defending is the best part of WvW? It might be.
That I enjoy fighting again the odds and being the underdog? Likely.
That Helm’s Deep was my favorite scene in LotR? It’s definitely a possibility, Pelennor Fields was good too, let’s be honest.

hm this shall forever be known as the battle of the fallen. from the top 3 tiers to the second last. all of are servers have fought long and hard. we’ve lost people, guilds and motivation. but we never gave up. are 3 servers thrive on battle. we all would of jumped ship long ago if that wasn’t the case. one day we shall all rise again!

I mean, I guess there are some people who enjoy getting stomped on by a much larger force, but I just don’t see the fun in it.

If your fun in WvW is dependent on winning every week you’re going to have a bad time. No server can win every week, and even if they could, that would get boring real quick. Ask us, we can tell you all about it.

In our previous match-up against GoM we were outmanned 2:1 in our own borderlands, and held nothing on any other map. We held out successfully for 12 hours in a constant siege of Bay. Many on the server described it as the most fun they’ve ever had in WvW. Sure, at the end of the week we lost by a couple hundred thousand, but we had fun the whole time.

I’ve noticed either people are leaving for low tier servers or they are bandwagonning in the T1 servers…

I’d believe it completely. If you look at when the lower tiers get unbalanced, it’s usually when large WvW guilds transfer down all at once. Every couple weeks, one server gets a wave of transfers and rockets up the rankings from bandwagoning. If upper tiers are constantly losing players to this I’d see how it would seem populations are dropping for them and growing for us.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say his question was rhetorical and that he was really just recruiting for HoD. Not judging though, we recruit too, just laughing a bit to myself that people are really trying to answer the question.

It’s hard to blame him. We at HoD are a proud bunch, which I think is understandable after our little tumble down the ladder. We may not field as many each night as every other server, but by and large, those that do come out are a dedicated, motivated bunch. In my honest (and self-promoting) opinion, that’s what makes a good server. Anyone who wasn’t interested in the community has long since left, and those of us who are there are in it to work together and put forward our best every day.

Almost a full day in and the competition is still a dead heat. It seems like all sides are having a good time our there this week. SF has been giving us a run for it today, but we finally managed to push Stone Mist. We’ll see how it pans out later tonight.

Funny thing happened this evening…in HoD BL, two breakout events occurred simultaneously against us. Is this normal? Reading the release notes, I thought there would only be one at a time.

Please tell me you aren’t actually complaining about this? I mean, the style of play and ridiculous self aggrandizing in this thread this week has left a bad taste in the mouth of a lot on HoD. But this? That HoD used the breakout NPC, to take two towers… on one map… at the same time… Really? I suppose you’d have preferred us to go all to one tower, fight you there, and then go all to the second tower, and fight you there.

(Honestly DR… It doesn’t help when you have 2 or 3 people /laughing at very tower you take either.)

Dear DR,

You just sent 10 golems in the last hour charging at our Garrison’s water gate only to be shredded by cannon fire from cannons you didn’t bother to destroy. Maybe one day you’ll take a fully upgraded (and defended) tower, which would provide a much needed morale boost.

Lets be honest. ET and HoD are the primary losers in ANet’s boggling of the transfer system, and in the slowness of the current ranking system to adjust to complete washouts. There have been more than enough unanswered calls for an official response to how and when they’re going to fix transfers. (Unless there’s a more satisfactory answer than “it’s proving more difficult than we though” that I just haven’t read)

Those of us with some loyalty to a single side have stayed, but we’ve lost literally all of our fair weather players over the past 2 months, a group which contributes a large number of bodies to most servers’ WvW efforts. The ones you’ve got left here now are, as another thread called us, “the brass tacks”. (Though I prefer stubborn nails)

The only way for this to be fixed is for ANet to finally lock down transfers, so that HoD and the other lower tier servers can start developing new players, and not worry about newly transferred guilds leaving the second that momentum shifts.

The message here is that you should be prepared to be sent right back down here like SF did. You remind us of them a few weeks ago, feel free to check that match-up’s score and how they’ve done since. It’s OK, we’ll wait a few weeks, we’ve waited months already, and it’s delicious every time.

Please remember that it was a small (but vocal) minority who were like that. The vast majority of us SFers knew the real story with the score during that particular match-up and didn’t fool ourselves into thinking that that crazy high score had anything to do with mad WvW skillz.

As far as I remember it was only one guy who was bragging. And he doesn’t even play on SF anymore.

No worries, I hold no ill will to SF as a server. Every server has it’s good and bad apples. I’m actually looking forward to the likely, eventual T8 SF-ET-HoD match-up. Naturally I’m hoping for either us or ET (because most of us at Henge really like ET), but a good fair fight either way will make me happy.

This hits the nail on the head though. Most of the vocal people in these threads have transferred from server to servers several times looking for a win and running away once they lose momentum.
