If there was going to be another x-amount of expansions, I feel like if they try to add every single mastery into the newer maps, it would feel cluttered. Perhaps stuff like hidden areas only reachable by old masteries for a chest, or a nice view, or achievement, or something like that would be neat.

But not too many, just a reasonable small amount that gives an explorer something to look forward to and explore.

I actually like all the verticality in HoT maps, not sure if that point of view is still considered in the minority. It made the maps feel bigger, with more things to explore, gliding from way on top, going to the other end of the map in one glide was satisfying.

The PoF maps are okay I suppose, they had too much flak for creating vertical maps, so they’ve toned it since for the LWS3 maps. But I’m hoping they have at least one map similar to HoT, along with the challenging content to do in it. I guess we’ll find out, but I’m hoping the difficulty steadily increases from the first zone all the way to the last. They don’t need a full on meta event for each map, but I’m hoping they atleast have something in the open world which requires a lot of players/coordination. The best part of HoT was during the first few weeks when everyone had been trying and failing to get the HoT meta events to succeed.

Not sure if stuff in the Oasis was disabled, but there didn’t feel like much to do in it during the beta. The only difficult/fun things I recall was the bounty missions which I had a blast doing. I also don’t recall.. was there any sort of currency in the Oasis that I’m not remembering right now? Something to keep players going to the map for grinding/farming I mean.

I think this is a great idea. Like what OP said, have this merchant unlock only after an account has completed all masteries in a location. Make the reward something not so rare, or can be earned through normal means. Maybe like Obsidian Shards, map currency, bags of t6 mats, that sort of thing.

That way, once the next expansion is out, you’ll have a ton of content that’d just be waiting for you.

I’m looking for a WvW guild for Blackgate, it’s fun, but I usually end up zerging and would be interested in joining an actual guild, figured I’d ask questions here first though.

What levels is the guild? How many members are in it? What Guild Hall do you guys have? And what are the rep rules?

Logic of stats barriers?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Valiant.5078

For gameplay and having a reason to login I suppose. I really want Viper’s. But crafting it is much more expensive than just buying Zerker from the TP. Having a goal to work for gives me a reason to play.

Being more expensive/harder to obtain, a specific combination of stats is just another level of prestige to work for. Someone made a mention of it earlier, but it’s like Ascended gear, it’s only so minuscule in terms of stat bonuses, but gives you a better edge compared with what everyone else is wearing.

It’s like the “Ahh nice, that guy spent a ton of work to get that…”

That, or it really is just better stats anyways and worth working for it.

Vipers > Sinister > Rabid

Lets assume a guy believes the above to be true, they can totally get the core set Rabid, pretty cheap and easy to get. Then working for Sinister and Viper after that gives him a reason to keep playing.

Next expansion will be two dragons at once? Or will we wrap up Primordus somehow in Living World? Anyways if it’s two dragons at once, which is my guess, then…

  • I’m hoping they’ll have a fire themed and ice themed guild hall. They did release two for HoT, makes sense they’ll release another two for the next expansion.
  • They created 4 maps for HoT. Here’s to hoping 3 maps each for both Primordus and Jormag. So 6 altogether. But if we go by track record, then it’ll be 2 each, which I think feels too cramped imho.
  • A new class. Though between this or a new race. I would almost prefer a new race. The Tengu had once been considered as a player race, but unless they make the Tengu play a larger role in the story, I don’t see a reason they would appear. At least Revenants had Rytlock Brimstone.
  • One new elite spec for all existing classes! I can’t wait to see these personally.

Came back to game, question about end game

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Valiant.5078

Endgame… Hmm. Well let me think.

1) Achievements. Some people’s endgames is just accumulating more of these. Self explanatory. Jumping puzzles achievements, explorer, etc.
2) Silverwastes. Farming this over and over and over. Just for loot and moneys.
3) Auric Basin Tarir Meta. Also just farming this over and over.
4) Unlocking stuff. Unlocking skins/making your character look amazing. Saving up for legendaries, working for that specific weapon skin, etc. Unlocking the elite spec.
5) Ascended gear. Exotics are easy to get, the next step up is working for that Ascended gear. After which you would use for…
6) Raids. Difficult content, and you’ll need a consistent group to do it.
7) Dungeons. Not sure how they are like these days tbh, but sometime ago I remember people farmed these for the rewards.
8) Trying out different builds, and meta builds. More characters to fit them.

Not really endgame, but since endgame is mainly grinding/farming, totally consider checking out the Halloween’s Labyrinth. Fast cash and exp while its there. Plus its a break from the normal farms of Silverwastes or Auric Basin.

As for fun stuff to do. The meta events in the HoT zones are fun. Story missions are fun too, if you haven’t gotten HoT that’s a thing to do.

Anyways, welcome back to GW2! If you’re interested in hanging out or finding a playmate feel free to add me.

Meta event guilds are just fine for meta events. You don’t need to help/do anything else with them. If anything, use it as a way to figure out when the TT guilds run their weekly TT. People usually Taxi into those maps anyways, so I’m not really sure why you’re missing out. I would suggest finding when they get run, and hop in with them. Guilds aren’t needed, organization is. Guilds just tend to be more organized as a whole.

Just avoid the meta event if its frustrating. You don’t have to play it? Is there a reward on that successful meta event that you are aiming for?

Valiant.5078

It is a bad thing, people found the effort they spent is not worthy, especially with all the other meta with certain success. Even if some people want to do it, they would not be able to find a group since most have left. THIS is why TT became a ghost town. This is a game, very few people enjoy constant failure and minor rewards compare to other easy meta+more gold+more reward+little chance to get a super rare, especially in open meta which you can’t control the people. Understand that.

If they remove it, there would be no more option for players to do it. I can’t see why having less options is a good thing, when I would honestly prefer to have more variety than less. This would cater towards the most number of players, right?

People who don’t think the reward is enough shouldn’t do it. This probably isn’t there thing. Perhaps the cost of joining an organized guild for it is too much. Or they don’t believe the effort associated with the expected reward is worth it for the difficulty.

At the same time, for people who really want the reward, what stops them in trying to get into an organized guild just for it? For some people the effort put in and the accomplishment is reward enough for it, I don’t see why we need to take that away from those particular players?

TT is a ghost town for pugs. But the players who like that accomplishment and the achievements associated with it, figure out which timeslots are the best, and join the guilds who run them successfully or at least stalk LFG to get into that map.

In my opinion, there is indeed a place for hard content like this in the open world. You just don’t get the same feeling from hard instanced content like raids. So much more satisfying knowing another 100 players are with you accomplishing successfully that particular goal. Rewards or no, isn’t that sense of accomplishment a reward too? Not to mention a whole lot of fun for those who like that?

I don’t see why we need to have every meta event to be easy as pie. As long as we have enough of those to go around, it’s great that there’s a handful that are at this difficulty.

I personally think there’s a place for elite large group content like this. It’s great they have TT already, but having more variation with the TD meta is also good.

There is always the AB meta event which is a ton easier, but at least with the TD meta, there’s this option for the players who want to tackle on a hard and open world meta.

They gave us 4 meta events in the expansion, the other 3 are pretty easy. I think it’s fine having 1 of them at this difficulty. At least it wasn’t DS, since DS is more central to the story than TD. If for every 4 people you ask, you can find one person who likes challenging open world stuff, I think the ratio is fine.

But what if other people on the map don’t want to do it? Can you kick them out? How do you know they are good enough or not?

You don’t, that’s what makes Open World meta events more fun. Seeing if a large group as a whole can take it on and complete it. Even if the meta is high failure, I don’t see why that’s a bad thing? There’s more of an accomplishment if you do get part of a group that completes it. Why take that away?

Future living world updates/expansions will be bringing in meta events since that seems to be the direction they are taking. Having a handful difficult ones out of all of them gives more options for players on what they want to do. Options are good, right?

The problem is you can’t use the currency/reward you get from AB and use it in TD.

Some people want to get things from TD, so AB being functional means nothing to TD.
TD’s problem need to be solved in TD only.

This is true, but you are already able to get the currency for TD without a successful TD meta? What are the rewards for a successful TD meta completion?

I honestly don’t remember the early bosses for season 2 to be difficult. o-o

There was this one dragon boss that was tougher, since I nearly got into a downed state a few times in that fight. It’s been forever since I did it, but that might have been the final fight?

I recall one of the fights threw me off as I wasn’t aware I had to kill these shadow-things – literally had a stalled boss fight for the longest time until I went ahead and read up a guide.

Though I recall these boss fights to be much later on in season 2. If you’re having trouble now, I think it’ll get worse for you.

Compared to the final fight(s) of the HoT story though, season 2 was definitely easier.

I managed to do it on my second attempt. First attempt I had no idea that mechanic was there where the floor starts hurting you. After that first wipe, the second attempt didn’t seem to be all too difficult. I did that with a hammer guardian in zerk, traited defensively with defensive utilities.

Some tips I found running it with some friends who really needed help.

Canach fight. That shield thing is annoying. It’s actually easier/faster if you trait some CC in your utilities to break its bar. I literally just face tanked Blighted Canach and would burn down its CC bar whenever I see it. Doing it this way made that fight really easy.

Eir fight. Burn down the wolf, using a ranged weapon and constantly moving helps a lot in getting away from the arrows. Once the wolf is down, run to its corpse, and once Eir’s breakbar appears, burn it. You end up doing a huge amount of damage and you can probably get it down after 2 or 3 burns like that.

As for the pale tree fight, I avoid it on my characters, since that fight just isn’t as simple/easy as the other two. The times I attempted it, it had bugged up. I would suggest Canach + Braham until I hear it being fixed.

Final boss fight. My advice is to run into the updrafts, they just push you up. At that point, just hold spacebar to get the wings. If you have stealth gliding, spam it as often as you can.

If all else fails, get some friend(s) to join you. And even if you fail, if they’re good enough, they’ll continue. You still get to have the finishing blow on him at the very end.

Basic Scribing costs are nonsense

Valiant.5078

No, it is not. It is a net-zero exchange. Yes, they are sending gold to the player, but they are acquiring items in return. They have gone from liquid wealth to material wealth, but the total wealth remains constant on both sides. The wealthier player is still just as wealthy, and the poorer player is just as poor, he just has more gold and less pigments.

Actual wealth exchange would involve the wealthier player losing gold and gaining NOTHING in exchange for it, and/or the poorer player gaining gold or materials while expending nothing in exchange. So long as the gold is exchanged for useful goods or services, wealth has not shifted in the slightest.

I disagree. I mentioned that people are buying the item at a premium. They are spending, lets say, 50% more on that item’s actual cost down the line. While the sellers, in reverse, are earning 50% more. People who are buying it are losing wealth. They get absolutely nothing in exchange for that 50% of lost money, other than the fact that they get their crafting up earlier than everyone else.

This is a total valid way of using that extra 50% lost.

There will always be people willing to pay double, triple, or more, of an item’s price, if they can achieve something before anyone else can.

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Valiant.5078

And you say that as if “and because that’s the way a free market works, it is good,” which is not true. Free markets do work that way, that does not make it a good thing that they work that way, and GW2’s economy could be better than a free market. They choose to not make it so.

Free markets are great. This was a deliberate design decision by A-net. Let the community figure out their prices, with A-net dictating the rarity of items. Whenever a new tier of something comes out in other MMOs, the devs don’t just dump free mats to players. That has never happened, and nor do I think anyone expects that from an MMO.

No, the wealth gap is that wealthy people can get the things that they want while the poor people cannot. You cannot close the wealth gap by allowing wealthy people to buy the things that they want, you close the wealth gap by not allowing them to accumulate money more efficiently than other players.

I think you need to use a different term. Economic inequality is related with the amount of wealth a person has. Wealth (how much money/stuff you have) and income (how much money/stuff you are able to earn).

Richer people, buying stuff off the TP, will send that gold to the a poorer person selling it. That effectively moves gold from someone who has a lot, to someone who has less. That is closing the wealth gap. That is distributing the wealth.

And with that new found wealth, people are indeed more easily able to acquire what they want.

A person with a lot of stuff, would be able to get what they want faster, simply because they have more of it. Now, perhaps they managed to get all that stuff through money. With the high prices currently they are paying at a premium. This means that they are spending more money than what the item will be worth. Where does that money go? To the people selling, who, if given the premise that they are poorer, are earning money at a higher rate as compared if they were sold in a few months time when prices go down.

What does this mean?

Rich people are spending more money for an item. With all that extra money going into poorer people’s wallet. That is indeed closing the economic disparity between the two.

But my gosh, why are we debating about economics. The issue here is that you don’t like the direction Anet is going with new crafting/materials. Which in all honesty, isn’t something people have been complaining about.

The mats are there in the TP, bought for a premium. If you have money. Buy it. Everyone knows the prices will stabilize. Every guild out there will be doing scribing at one point. Anet had never done anything in the past to dump free materials, nor I think they ever will. Has there been any precedence in other MMOs doing that? When something new comes out in some MMO, do they devs hand out the materials on a silver platter for everyone to just get started? Why does this need to change? Who else is being negatively affected by it? We all want free stuff. But that’s totally missing the point of playing the game. Something new and shiny comes out, of course people want to get it. The more incentives to get this new thing, the more people will be willing to pay for it.

This is akin to asking Anet to provide the mats for a new hypothetical craftable legendary.

Besides, at least the stuff is buyable from the trading post. That gives players that option to buy them, rather than being some sort of account bound mat.

Rich players buying things off the TP, means money is going down to all the other poorer folks who are just selling.

So what? They aren’t getting that money for nothing, they are getting that money in exchange for delaying their access to Scribing. That is not a virtuous transaction.

I was responding to this with that, sorry should have made it more clear:

Atm wealthy players who are willing to spend that amount of gold are buying an overpriced item. Not so wealthy players which are willing to wait can sell their items for more gold. So it helps a bit to close the “wealth gap”.

But only at the expense of the wealthy people getting access to the things they want, and the not-wealthy players not getting those things. That is not “closing the wealth gap,” that IS the wealth gap!

It is closing the wealth gap. It’s not closing any progression gaps. But that’s why people play the game. If someone took the time/gems to get that much money to allow them to get it first before everyone, I see that as a valid way to go about it.

They earned the money, in whichever way they got it, so in that regard, they should be free to spend what they want to spend. This drives up the price for those materials, but that’s just how a free market works. A-net should not just outright hand people stuff, making people earn it is a lot more acceptable.

I love the difficulty, breath of fresh air from everything else in open-world PVE that you steam roll right over.

People wanted difficulty to be sure but what they really wanted was something akin to the underworld and other off the beaten path maps in Gw1. The great thing about those were they were optional and I can see why more casual people would have complaints having to go through more difficult maps in the core campaign rather than have them separate.

I like the difficulty myself but I know it won’t last due to that oversight and will no doubt be nerfed in time

How about a compromise? That might be the best thing to cater towards casual vs elitist players.

Going off on a tangent, but since OP created suggestions for the next expansions. Perhaps Verdant Brink, or the first map in an expansion, should be nerfed to kingdom come for players who want to play casually. At the same time, for players who do want challenging open world PVE, have the next maps rise in terms of difficulty. It is kinda like that now, but only in terms of meta map events. Eg, The Verdant Brink meta events are completed often enough. Auric Basin less so. And then we have Tangled Depths even less so (if ever? Has this been successfully completed yet?). They can also apply this to the trash mobs, keep the easier mobs in VB, and as you go deeper into the jungles, encounter more frightful creatures. I actually already love the way the difficulty is at in the zones, but perhaps having difficulty incline gradually is a better way to go.

When players are required to go through the next zones, for story quests for example, I have the firm belief that as it is currently they are able to do just that. Gliding over mobs + running/evading through them works just fine even in zerker gear. Just don’t fight them if you’re not comfortable with it, and don’t mindlessly run into a thick concentration. There’s enough leeway to avoid most mobs.

As for Tangled Depths, this is one confusing map. The mini map doesn’t help as much as Tyria zones. At the same time, I think it’s great. It’s neat experiencing new things, even with map design. Picking up on visual cues rather than the mini map has been an experience new to me. Eg, I can no longer have the full screen map while running around (with the occasional jumping if I run into an obstacle). To solve this, perhaps they can implement more green arrows/waypoints. I recall earlier on in the Personal Story quest they had this aplenty. Little green arrows on the ground that guide your way to the next objective.

But NO global nerfs to everything. It will be a huge let down to many players who were waiting for open-world PVE like this. I’m having a blast going through the maps and doing the events simply because they keep me on my toes more often than say, the caravan escort in SW. Nerfs in the starting map sure! It helps with getting players to get a feel for what they’re getting into without it being dumped on them all at once. They can farm that zone(s) for their mastery exp. And as long as it’s still do-able to get from one story objective to the next in harder zones, that should be fine, right? All they would be missing are the more difficult events and meta map events in later zones.

But that’s a great way to rise to the challenge, rather than to lower the bar for everyone else.

Summary:

  • Easier first zone(s) for new expansions to cater towards players who want an easy time. This grants them an area(s) to get their mastery exp.
  • Rising difficulty in zones further in. Though, should still be fairly easy to get from one story objective to the next. This keeps events in these zones as ‘optional’, and are there for players who like this level of difficulty.

I do not agree with the OP about giving a ton load of materials for free. And even if they go this route, that option better be available to every other player joining in the future who might happen to miss it. They’ll just throw rants on the forums in that case.

Also, isn’t this how a market works? I see no problem. Sell all the materials now for all those rich players willing to throw money at the TP to get their Scribing up as fast as possible. If you want to go cheap, just wait a few months. If you want to level your scribe, then go ahead and spend a fortune, otherwise, just wait.

Rich players buying things off the TP, means money is going down to all the other poorer folks who are just selling.

Not sure why you’re complaining. Free is good right?

Are we even certain that the next expansion will make HoT free, it’s conjecture at this point.

If you’re looking for more grind, it’s all there in HoT. Instead of levels, they gave masteries, which in all honesty is just like more levels.

My personal experience with hammer is great. I treat it as a supporty/tank weapon. It does give a permanent uptime of protection which, even if you’re wearing full zerk, you end up feeling tanky, especially with Writ of Persistence traited with the extra heals.

It’s also a great CC weapon for the new break bars. I can’t comment on DPS, since I find Greatsword better for that still.

What to do once 80?

No specific order.

1). Mastery exp and levels.
2). Elite specs by doing the Hero Challenges in the new zone – gives +10 skill points each.
3). Full exotic set with desired stats. If you’re good enough at dodging, and knowing when to use skills, give berserker gear a shot, otherwise start defensive and slowly replace pieces until you’re somewhere you can handle without getting killed too much. Get them through dungeons, drops, or straight out buying.
4). Ascended armor by killing world bosses daily, or crafting if you want to spend hundreds of gold.
5). Help your guild with the Guild Hall stuff.
6). Achievements. Jumping puzzles, crafting, weapon kills, slayer kills, etc, etc, etc.
7). Make a new character.

My Take on HoT

I have to agree it feels like very large living world updates, at the same time, I’m glad it was released. I can only hope it does well enough to warrant future expansions.

I’m in full zerk, and not running into issues. My suggestion is traiting defensively, or changing gear.

I always advise buds to have as much dps gear as possible, up to the point you’re not consistently dying.

New Action Cam: What's the point?

Wouldn’t a combo system for key presses actually slow you down? Haven’t played TERA, but one button press will beat pressing 2 or more keys for a single ability?

There’s indeed a population of players who can’t handle 14+ keybinds, I have some buds who can’t get used to the action cam, since it pretty much disables using their mouse to click on skill icons. At the same time, it’s a great feature to the players who -can- handle 14+ keybinds. Makes the game feel a lot different. Though the best part is still the mobility you get from it.

Haven’t decided how efficient it is in terms of PVP, but if it doesn’t suite you, just don’t use it. I wouldn’t expect any large updates to the system as this was a spare-time project as Doug mentioned above.

The action cam is amazing. Main benefit is being able to walk backwards/sideways without slowing down your speed. You still slow down if you attack of course.

Though I’m not entirely sure where the issue is, f1 → f4 covers attunements. 1 → 5 is just fine, with keybinding q,e,r,z,x,c,v for everything else. (I don’t like shift/ctrl, I feel its too clunky with that combo key press).
