I tried to go with something original. I really like it.

I really oughtta try out the eye patch look, but I gave my dude a real kitteny little ’tache and have regretted it ever since. Thus, he never takes off the mask.

Wait a minute, so… By giving a relatively easily accessible item with which anyone can effectively and completely counter one of the most useful aspects of the thief’s class, players will be forced to look for new and less stealth-reliant ways to play their class effectively.

Right?

Hmm… Yeah I knew something didn’t sound right there. I will admit, I’m no expert, but if after 8 months the community STILL hasn’t found a way to make the thief useful OTHER than as a stealth assassin… Maybe they should be looking into that too?

What I’m saying is, people need to stop crying about nerfs to their class, but equally, I think it must be taken into consideration WHY people are so defensive. Stealth is a very contentious issue for the thief, and I guess it revolves around this question: Is stealth the only thing that makes a thief worthwhile?

Evidently a lot of the playerbase (and thieves themselves) seem to think so, or would like to think so. The issue here is not one about the “purpose” of these traps, but the consequences it will have, regardless of who it was targeted at. Many seem to feel that the thief is being neutered with all this stealth shenanigans. Not many folks like the prospect of being a eunuch.

Alas… Time vill tell. Time vill tell.

(Also I think a big part of the problem is that people who play MMOs are in many cases autistic kittentards, discuss.)

Anyone care to offer me any pointers?

Been playing this a long while but only just getting to 80 on my thief, here is what I’ve settled on through much experimentation. No idea what gear etc to go for, but this here is basically how I’m set up. I intended to go for a kinda all-rounder as I don’t generally have the time to tailor different alts and builds for WvW, PvP, PvE, PvD, DnD, CoD, OmG, WtF etc…

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fYAQNAoYVlcmaPXey7E95EhnCyOWdG08m9M4qWB

It’s pretty satisfying to play, less reliant on stealth than what I tend to see of the thief and more to do with slipping through your enemy’s fingers and being pretty much uncatchable, whilst keeping up constant damage on them (by necessity of healing so as to not die). Great for taking on big groups in PVE with the SB and coming out near enough unharmed, soloing a big mob is great with D/D and P/P, and I’ve even had a go in WvW and not had my kitten totally handed to me (wow!) generally just harassing people and being a pain in people’s rear as they try to kill me and I dodge around them all day.

But yeah I have totally no idea at all what kinda gear to use; there’s so much choice! Any pointers of a good place to start experimenting with this kinda build?

Death isn't a punishment; it's an experience

Newsflash: Not everybody want s to be punished when they are trying to have fun.

I hate to draw on such blatantly (I hope) false strawman arguments, but I really have to wonder about the truth behind the stereotypical MMO demographic sometimes. It seems very clear there’s a big divide to me.

I mean, call me jaded. But there’s something about coming home from a nine hour shift and spending the precious couple of hours you actually get to yourself on videogames, trying to relax, after grinding for gold all day EYE ARE ELL to pay the bills and keep the roof over your head… That makes this whole idea that death should be a “punishment”, and that MMOs are getting too “casual” seem… You know. What’s the word?

Bullkitten.

Meanwhile, I get a very strong impression that the other side of the coin is composed primarily of people who have, shall we say, not yet reached a point in life that they have to worry about such matters.

But then maybe I’m wrong. I love a challenge, don’t get me wrong, it’s just that some MMO gamers seem so utterly masochistic.

If you're terrible at MMOs and you know it..

MMOs seem to take a different kind of gamer. If you’re more used to action oriented games, where real life physics seem to apply at least to a semi-realistic extent, then MMOs tend not to make any sense.

I have tried to get into several MMOs in my time as a gamer, starting back in the days of Legend ofMir and other such rubbish. However it’s not until GW2 came along that I found myself able to actually get into the mechanics enough to develop any form of “skill”.

I would say I’m probably still terrible, I don’t get time to play nearly as much as I would like to, and as a result my mind still boggles when I look through my traits, skills, and try to piece together a “build” where all the percentages and buffs and bonuses etc. compliment one another. This game does a great job of bridging the gap somewhat to make it more action-oriented, where individual player skills like reaction times and accuracy make a difference; but at the end of the day there is still that element of playing a spreadsheet that you either understand, or you don’t.

I think I’m just too stupid for MMOs to be honest. I play games to let my brain relax, not to do math.

Dark dyes

I’m looking for a nice dark dye, Abyss seems to be the popular black dye, but it costs more money than I have ever even had so far.

Are there any alternatives? I’ve tried googling around and checking the wiki but it’s hard to get a feel for which dye will look right without seeing it on an actual in-game model; I don’t want to waste a ton of money buying a dye that doesn’t even look right.

Basically I want to have my guy sporting a nice dark-brotherhood style red and black. I know it’s superficial but not having the right colour is harming my enjoyment of the game! I wanna play dress up kitten and these brown earthy colours are not helping my thiefly looks.

Thank you, Anet.

For giving this game such KITTENING HUGE SHARKS..

Normally, underwater combat is something that utterly terrifies me in games; but at the same time captivates me. I know a lot of other gamers share this instinctual and hard to ignore terror whenever they come across a water section- Personally, I put it down to playing Half Life when I was eight years old. Those icthyosaurs left me traumatised. Some games I have simply stopped playing and never completed, because of water sections.

The underwater sections in this game however, are remarkably well executed. They bring a perfect blend of fear, adrenaline and yet oddly enough, blissful tranquillity. And KITTENING HUGE SHARKS.

I have baked you all some shark shaped cookies and am going to send them to your HQ.

Lots of love,

Lord Vermintide

When the guy started whining about someone being called Goebels, though, it just started reading like a Daily Mail article and I lost interest.

Best thing about Guild Wars 2? It isn’t this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operant_conditioning_chamber

Technically you can say any form of virtual entertainment conforms to such a structure, pressing the buttons until the screen flashes and you get your metaphorical treat. GW2 takes away the methodical implementation of such carrot/stick mechanics very effectively, almost turning it on it’s head, rewarding you for almost anything you do.

I mean some people enjoy playing a game that feels like a second job, seems crazy to me but whatever. Maybe they don’t already have a job IRL. If the thrill of seeing your virtual numbers going up really does that much for you then fine, have fun. Personally, though, whenever I’ve played an MMO in the past, I feel like I’m actually being robbed by the developer; worst offenders being Korean style games like Aion where you are constantly punished by arbitrary mechanics and insane difficulty levels, and you’re paying for the privilege. Some may call it “hardcore”, I just call it rather perplexing.

GW2 feels much more like a real skill based gaming experience to me, you’re playing for the satisfaction of actually playing. The structure of PVP makes it more akin to deathmatch than the tedious best-gear-wins of other MMOs. I know that beating someone is because I played my class better, and it was a fair fight from the beginning.

Obviously, we’ll see if it still feels this way once I’m at 80 and have spent a few months in Tyria, but on the whole I can see myself sticking with this much longer than any other MMO I’ve played. It’s not without negatives of course- At times I’ve come across mobs that are arbitrarily invulnerable until you get close enough, for example, and the personal quest has some ludicrous fluctuations in difficulty level, but these are very minor complaints compared to the polish of the product as a whole. I just hope they keep bringing more to the table, at this stage I will happily cough up a few more pounds for expansions and such.

I include the link at the top of this post because I do still see a lot of players whining how “there’s no endgame” or “but the dungeon/pvp/event/whatever reward sucks!”, in this thread even. You’re missing the point. Go back to your carefully tuned hamster wheel in some other game.
