Can't make Thaw Elixir

If I understand you correctly, I must be carrying ONLY the correct amount of ingredients? Because I was carrying 50+ winterberries, 30+ suet, and 15 or so eggshells, plus the one firestone.

And — I take damage standing near enough to the cauldron to interact with it, and I see other people standing in the same place and getting the buff no problem. Are you sure about this?

I have been unable to make the Thaw Elixir in Bitterfrost since I finished Crack in the Ice (I went on to finish Head of the Snake and Flashpoint). I don’t think I’m doing anything wrong. I only ever received the buff exactly one time, when I was working the story Crack in the Ice. I don’t want to keep wasting winterberries if it’s bugged or somehow impossible.

I go to the Blister Cauldron with way more than enough of the ingredients, except for the firestone, of which you can only buy one per day. I interact with the cauldron, click on the option to brew the elixir, and it consumes the ingredients (including the firestone), but I don’t get the buff.

After that, Sun Warming no longer has the firestone for purchase.

Since I’d like to go back into the bitter cold to do the Quirky Quaggan quest for the mastery point, this is completely blocking my progress.

Please fix this? Or show me what I’m doing wrong?

I’m stuck on Escort the quaggan. I even managed to pull him out of the rock by running a jellyfish over him — he killed it, and then swam right back in!

PLEASE fix the bugs that block progress!

I can’t believe we had a big patch today and Anet didn’t fix this bug. IT BLOCKS PROGRESS ON LS2. How is that not important enough to fix?

You youngsters just are so accustomed to voice chat, you don’t even know what to do without it! I’m from old school EverQuest. We didn’t have voice chat; we had Mad Skillz instead. Healers practiced rotations and everyone had to know the strat. Players set up hotkeys to announce what they were doing and when they were doing it, and there was usually a dedicated (text chat) raid channel, with parallel dedicated channels for the tanks, for the healers, for the dps. And it was amazing what we could accomplish. EQ raids were hard.

And no, turning up the volume on my speakers just makes it worse because it’s an issue of not being able to hear certain sounds at all. The only thing that works for me is when everybody — and I mean everybody — speaks each word distinctly, but when people get excited, they forget to do that. In real life, I can watch people’s lips to pick up what I can’t hear. Obviously, I can’t do that in game.

I find this odd the guilds I have been in want you to be on ts to listen to tactics and orders that cant be typed in the middle of battle.

Noone forces people to speak they just have to listen, if you cant do that your not part of the team and should be excluded frankly.

And what about people like me, who through no fault of their own have hearing issues and can’t UNDERSTAND what people are saying in TS/Mumble/whatever chat?

I guess we should just, you know, never expect to be able to play with others?

Yes, I did Rally to Maguuma and Torn from the Sky.

It was very difficult to solo, by the way. I’ve seen people saying that the new content is all group content — and my guild kicked me while I was inactive. So my options are limited unless I find a new guild.

Okay. That makes sense. But I still don’t understand why my XP bar emptied and gold number to the left of it still says 0.

I just came back to the game (after a year) right before the launch of HoT. I’ve always been a “filthy casual,” so I’m not really up on the end game stuff, but I do have 5 lvl 80 characters (ranger, elementalist, mesmer, guardian, warrior), all in exotic gear.

And I’m really confused now.

Since the launch of HoT, my lvl 80’s have an XP bar that firmly says 0 on the left end. On my ranger, it was filling up, slowly, because I don’t have lots of time to play, and I hadn’t ventured into HoT yet. The XP bar filled up and seemed to get stuck there, and I thought, well, okay, I’ll head over and do Rally to Maguuma and unlock masteries, see what Druid would be like. Maybe the XP bar will tick over and say 1 instead of 0.

At some point, my XP bar emptied, and the number on the left is still 0. What? What happened to my XP? I have no idea why the XP disappeared but the number didn’t go up to 1. I have no idea what in the world I’m doing. Is there a website, or a post, or something, anything, somewhere, that will explain these things in terms that an old woman who wasn’t born knowing every detail of how to play GW2 and didn’t grow up with an XBox in her hand can understand? Please?

Personal Story: Trouble at Fort Salma

Personal Story step: Trouble at Fort Salma
The arrow cart on the east wall will not target the mordrem at the east gate of Fort Salma. The targeting circle will be green the first time you try to target the mordrem, but it turns red as soon as you actually activate 1, 2, or 3 on the skill bar (doesn’t matter which) and gives a line-of-sight error. I’m guessing the following is why (from the HoT release patch notes):

Arrow carts (all types) now require 10 more supply to build and have new, custom line-of-sight calculations. (emphasis added)

Try as we might, that arrow cart would do nothing, and yes, both I and the person doing the step with me know how to use them. Neither of us had ever done this personal story step before.

It was possible to complete the encounter, but it was highly confusing, given that Kasmeer and Marjory kept telling us to use the cart. We ended up range-attacking the mordrem down with longbows (warrior and ranger).

My guess is that the easy fix would be to move the cart to a position where it doesn’t violate the new, custom line-of-sight calculations.

Game Updates: Traits

For those of you saying that Anet can’t roll back the changes to the trait system because it sets a bad precedent, I have two words:

New Coke.

That debacle likely occurred before a significant number of GW2 players were born, but it stands as an example of a big company caving in to customer demand. For those who don’t know, aren’t sure, or would rather not go to the trouble of looking it up, in April 1985 Coca Cola changed its formula and shoved the change down everyone’s throats. They did this, apparently, after extensive rounds of taste-testing and as an attempt to grab more of the market from Coke’s competitors.

It backfired, spectacularly, and just 79 days later, they reintroduced Classic Coke.

Come on, ArenaNet, just roll back the change already.

Getting back to the trait issue, as a new-ish player I’d like to throw my hat in the ring.

Unlock quests were added because players asked for it. They had a system like it in Guild Wars 1 for skills.

Don’t try to blame players for the trait unlock system. That is NOT on us. At the bare minimum we would have done it better, allowing you to unlock all adept traits by level 11 if you focused on them, all the Master ones by level 40, and all the Grandmaster ones by level 60 (and obviously the level at which you unlock each tier would not have been pushed back). All level 60-80 unlocks would be for the “new” traits that got added after launch.

Long story short, having easy access to a variety of traits makes this game SO much more fun, and lacking that access makes the game SO much more dull.

I began playing GW2 in May, so I’ve only ever experienced the new trait system. And I can tell you that I really resented it when I learned about the old system. If I’d only discovered GW2 a few months earlier, I’d have all my traits to play with, but I don’t. It feels like new players got kittened.

The old system actually made more sense to me — buy a book, learn the traits for your current level, play with them for a while. The current thing with suddenly at lvl 30, having a gazillion traits to find and unlock, was overwhelming. The EotM unlocks aren’t so bad — if you happen upon a good karma train, you can get them done in less than an hour of following a commander tag around. But I also have to annoy the hardcore WvW players in Eternal Battlegrounds, who think my presence there just hampers the war effort and who aren’t willing to help a PVE player unlock a trait. Especially not the grub.

And you know what? They’re right.

How would you put in a system that allows for newer and less experienced players to have the time they needed to learn things while making it easier for experienced players to speed up the process and have more freedom?

One, new players NEVER needed “more time” to learn the game. Time was never at issue. What they needed was more training, more explicit “here is the system and how to use it,” like the new dodge trainer. Just taking the existing ability roll-out and spreading it out over more levels solves nothing. If their goal is to make the game easier to understand, the solution has nothing to do with spreading the skills out more, and more about adding tutorials.

For example, instead of moving the downed state to level 5 and only giving you half the abilities, they could put it at level 2, which you hit when you reach the tutorial boss (rather than after), and then the tutorial boss is guaranteed to one-shot you at least once, putting you into downed state, but then leaves you alone, while a message pops up highlighting the downed state options, and then after about thirty seconds to a minute you are auto-rallied. Problem solved.

That would be a beautiful solution. Make it part of the story. I learned how to aim a ballista from skill points in Snowden Drifts and Bloodtide Coast. Impress the locals! Prove your skill! That made a certain amount of sense to me and made it part of the flow of things. Do something similar with dodge, instead of making it the contrivance it is currently.

Count me as one of the ones who wants to unlock all my weapon skills right away, so I can settle back and play with them and find out what I like. I did that with a low level necro I was messing around with before the patch — I made sure I unlocked everything, because I’d heard about the coming changes. I was furious when I logged him in after the patch and found his offhand weapon was locked and level-gated. You took away some of my progress.

Already-existing characters should have been fully grandfathered.

Reverting the utility slot skills to earlier levels was a step in the right direction, and as a player leveling a mesmer, I really appreciated that change. But some of this other stuff is not well done at all. It’s better to add content to help new players who are lost, rather than impact the ones who aren’t.

And it really, really looked like you think we’re stupid. That accounts for a great deal of the more rageful player comments, too.

Sept 16 patch, Thank You Anet!

“Fixed a bug that prevented some accounts from having vistas now unlock on an account-wide basis rather than a per-character basis.
Skill challenges now unlock on an account-wide basis rather than a per-character basis as originally intended.”

I hate to look stupid, but I don’t see any change.

I’ve got 3 lvl 80’s, and 2 of them have 100% world completion. But to my lower level alts, the vistas are still just as unviewed and the skill challenges just as undone as they were yesterday, even in zones at or below their level.

What changed, exactly?

Have you seen what they did to rangers? No access to the pet window. No way to control your pet. None. It’s horrible.

And this thing of giving us only 1 or 2 weapon skills at first, because it’s too confusing to give us more? I’m a veteran EQ/EQ2 player. I had 20 weapon skills / spells up at all times, from early on. Do Chinese players really like it this way???

The sad truth is, if they make more money off China than they do off NA/EU — it’ll stay this way. What we think about it doesn’t matter when the bottom line is money.

GW2 is Alt-unfriendly now.

Spam weapon 1 skill in the opening sequence. Spam 1 and 2 until lvl 4? Are you KIDDING me???

Boooooring. I’m going to have to give other games a look.

Edit: Oh, and by the way. I made a new ranger. No way to control the pet. None. He just did whatever he wanted, and there was nothing I could do to call him back or tell him to attack.

Nuh uh. No way. That is completely unacceptable.

I’m getting the same creeping feeling that I got from the Star Wars NGE.

A functional main story this long after release should be a priority imho.

Well, it used to work, it only became bugged very recently.
I’ve done it before on another character.

I agree. The main personal story is important. It should be a priority.

And I too have successfully completed Ossuary of the Unquiet Dead on another character, earlier this summer. This is a recent bug.
