I find that in between 15-16khp is more than enough. Stacking vit to get to 20k will drastically lower all other stats. I don’t recommend it. I’m able to have 3k+ atk, 41% crit, and 2800 armor because I have my health at 15.8k.

When i was a fresh 80, I did try to stack vit to obtain the same hp number as warriors. It just doesn’t work. Unfortunately, all that makes you is a squishy meat sack.

I run Greatsword(w/ hydromancy rune), a 1h sword/focus, and judges intervention if I know i’m going to be doing some chasing. 3 gap closers plus a 3sec aoe chill usually stops people from getting away from me, unless they’re a thief; then…nobody can catch them :/

Edit: I’ll admit, our only option of a ranged weapon sucks. HARD. That’s why i try to work around it, via gap closers/other forms of cc.

@Ynna
Does that mean that thieves should be viable in providing boons/heals in a support role? Conversely, should we be able to shadowstep and stealth? I fail to see your point. The argument can go with both ways, and is pointless to continue. Instead of complaining that we have a lack of ranged weapons, why not use that time to try to come up with alternatives?I’m trying to provide other options for people to use.

For example, wall of reflection set up at the right moment can deal an absurd amout of dps back at the enemy. Sure, it’s on a pretty long cooldown, but it’s worth it. You save your allies from damage, and deal 100% of the damage back at your opponents.

@Paladin
My sentiments exactly.

Voltric.6920

I have never had a need for a ranged weapon in WvW. I leave that up to the rangers/engineers/etc in my group. When in a stalemate, I’ll provide support by throwing down wall of reflection and spewing all sorts of boons out to my allies. When it’s time to push in, I’m right alongside the warriors and thieves rushing in.

That being said, if you’re looking for a range buff, guardian may not be the right class for you. We have plenty of other things to do besides plink away with a rifle/bow.

I’d rather let arenanet take its time to test out certain changes(im sure they’re looking at the issue) before they roll out buffs for us. The last thing i want is to get buffed immediately, only to be nerfed into oblivion in the next patch due to massive outcries of guardian being OP.

I’m sitting at 3.1k attack, 48% crit, ~3k armor, and ~16k health on my guardian atm. I’m not sure if there’s that big of a difference in stats between me and you, but weapons definitely come into play. I usually run either a greatsword or hammer as one set, and a sword/focus as my other set. My traits ultimately allow for 4 blinds (1 from greatsword#4, 1 from sword#2, 1 from focus#4, and one from Virtue of Justice). Combine that with 4 active blocks with the focus, and you have potentially effectively evaded 8 hits. For me, the key to playing against a thief is getting right up in his/her face as quickly as you can via flashing blade and/or Judge’s intervention. When I play extremely aggressively with thieves, they tend to not want to stick around.

I just noticed that a Thief killed you with his bow. How does that even happen? o_O

Also, are you a geared lvl 80 guardian? I noticed quite a difference between 80 and pre-80 guardians.

The class is perfectly viable in WvW. Rather, the guardian’s problem is that it requires MUCH higher base hit points.

I don’t believe this is the issue. To me, everything is fine as is. If they gave guardians more base HP, guardians would definitely be op. I’m already near un-killable in small scale skirmishes.

Am I one of the few people who aren’t bothered by the fact that we dont have much ranged capability? IMO, guardians are far from useless in keep and tower defenses. Support Guardian can kill anyone ?

in Guardian

Posted by: Voltric.6920

Voltric.6920

The misconception is that people think traits dictate what they “can” and “cannot” do. Pick a weapon that you like, and add points where you think it would be more fun. It’s that simple. At your level, you can level and kill with just about anything. Experiment around to find something that really suits you.

What is the point of Guardian in WvW?

in Guardian

Posted by: Voltric.6920

Voltric.6920

If you enjoy playing a support class that gets absolutely no rewards for anything it does, then guardian is for you.

This game is not made for support players, that is why there are no tanks and healers, only the damage you can do matters here, and only damage gets rewarded.

This I’ll have to disagree with. There are numerous ways to provide “support”. if you consider support to be a back-line healer, then of course you’ll get no rewards. also, in my opinion[read: IN MY OPINION], that is one of the least effective ways to play a guardian.

I play my guardian extremely aggressively, sporting 3k+ attack, 48% crit, and 3k+ armor, with 16k health. I stay on the front line with the warriors, spewing Might, Protection, and Regeneration nonstop. Am I supporting? Yes. Am I getting rewards? Hell yes.

Of course, there are many ways to play a guardian, but if you truly believe support gets you no rewards, you should do a bit more exploring with your guardian to find a good balance. No offense intended.

Holy crap. it gives healing based on number of allies buffed? I was under the impression it was similar to the grandmaster zeal trait for greatsword.

Also, looking at your calculations, the game also counts the number of stacks given separately, even if the stacks were applied at once? Also, I assume that buffed applied to yourself procs this effect as well?

For example: Symbol of wrath gives 5 stacks of retaliation at 1sec each. This would in turn apply 5*72=360 points of healing? and if allies stand in it, the effect is compounded?

@Sol
From what I’ve experienced with empowering might, the 1sec ICD limits you to 1 stack of might granted per second, no matter what you do. A few weeks back, I had the same idea you did, so i decided to try it out.

4 mobs + 8 crits from 1h sword’s 3rd strike = 1 stack of might.

That was the moment I decided 10 points into Honor was sufficient for me.

Voltric.6920

Seeing as you’re not 80 yet, I have noticed that stat scaling becomes much worse the close you are to 80. Once you hit 80, getting a mixed set of rare Knight’s and Valkyrie armour should raise your survivability significantly. Prior to 80, I noticed that I had around 11-12k health. After getting my initial set of rare 80 gear, I noticed that I had 16k health, much more toughness, and more power than what WvW scaling offered.

Have you tried building your guardian in sPvP? Everybody has access to the same gear, so there shouldn’t be any issues when it comes to the difference in stats.

For the most part, it’s learning what other classes can do, looking for tells of high damage skills(usually have some sort of signature animation), and timing your mitigation skills properly. That alone will help more than stacking stats/gear. Not sure what else to say, but I hope this helps ><

Sometimes I am able to live a while, you know, when you do a Shield of Wrath as the warrior does his spinny “I win” move. If one aegis would block that one-button-press, multiple-hits attack then I’d last somewhat longer. But that’s not the only problem. Even if I have my very short duration multi-block power on, it doesn’t last long enough to prevent a short bow’s AUTO attack, since that lasts forever. What I’m saying is that my powers don’t appear to counter those of other classes effectively.

I mostly play WvW. Here is how I set up:
sword+focus for multi-block shield, teleport and blinds.
sceptre+torch for something ranged, immobilise and some AoE.
I run with these skills:
Signet of Resolve for big heal and condition remover.
Signet of Judgement for damage reducer.
“Retreat!” for extra aegis and speed.
“Save Yourselves” for speed & buffage.
Elite skill: They’re all crap.

Traits:
30 Radiance, II,VI, XI
20 Valour, II, V
15 Honour, II
(level 79).
HPs: 12,745

It really depends on how you set your skills/traits up. Just looking at your utilities, you’re extremely susceptible to any form of cc, allowing you to be kited with ease. I personally run Smite Condition or Purging Flames, Judge’s Intervention, and Contemplation of Purity.

For weapons, I run a greatsword, and sword/focus or sword/torch. It all depends on what I think i’m going to need. With these weapons and your traits, you should have 4 blinds, a 4 block shield, and 3 gap closers. In my opinion, this is usually enough mobility to chase down most people.

Lastly, it still boils down to what role you’re trying to fill in WvW. I for one, am built to dive right in there with the Warriors and Thieves and provide melee support in the form of combo fields/finishers.

That’s definitely something i’ll have to test when I get home tonight.

The easiest way to test this is probably to use a hammer, autoattack until you get the protection field, activate purging flames, then mighty blow. If what you say is true, you should get both retaliation and 3x might.

Kruunch.3714

Regarding combo fields and finishers … when using GS, #2 is a combo field and #3 is a combo finisher. However I seem to only get the finisher boon randomly.

The reason it seems random is because whirling wrath only activates the light field via its projectiles.

Kruunch.3714

Is there more to combo fields and finishers other than activating one, and then the other while the first is still active?

That’s pretty much it. To activate a combo field, you just have to use a finisher inside, or have something pass through it.
