skyrim is a masterpiece.
a rpg changer.
everybody knows that, to say otherwise is to be part of the minority.
Oh my. Hyperbole much? I found Skyrim incredibly boring after about 30 hours. There are about 2,720,000 Google results for “Skyrim boring” and only 611,000 for “Skyrim masterpiece” so it’s definitely not a minority opinion.
As to the topic, I agree that comparing a single player game to an mmo just doesn’t work. To me, they are night and day. I expect themepark when I play a single player. In mmos, I expect much more interaction with other players that make things far less predictable.
My first 80 was a ranger so I know how easy rangers have it in PvE. Honestly, I felt like I facerolled my way to 80 on it.
My mesmer has been a whole different story. At low levels I felt incredibly weak and died frequently. One on one, I could win but would be at like half health or worse by the time it was over. Forget dealing with adds.
What I did was level him up using crafting to get some trait points. Once I got to about level 25 or so, things got easier. And now I’m at level 73 and having a blast! The key for mesmers, imho, is trait points. You really really need them for the class to feel viable.
I definitely agree with some kind of change to Dragon’s Tooth. It’s great in solo PvE as an opener since most mobs just stand there waiting. Once you’ve dropped it, melee mobs run straight to you so you can Phoenix them while they do that.
Still useful but more likely to miss in mass PvE events, such as clearing a Temple in Orr. But once you get to PvP and WvW, it really is more a waste of time.
The animation time is what kills it. Watching the tooth hang above someone, while visually impressive, is painful. You can literally watch someone walk away from it while you’re still casting. Make it more meteor-like. It comes flying in almost instantly or something. At least then it would have a chance to hit.
Aside from the buginess, I don’t get what this change was meant to do. Was there something wrong with just looting from the corpse? As cesmode said above, I like just flicking the f key as I run by a corpse to get the stuff.
Just spent a half hour running around caledon forest opening boxes for the monthly. None of the ventari gave me trouble, and I was solo the entire time save for when occasionally someone else nearby would help out a bit. Didn’t die once – balancing seems fine to me, don’t know what all the fuss is about.
Please don’t make things a walk in the park because a few people who cant play their classes cry on the forums, a challenge is a good thing!
Caledon is a low level area and the toys there are reasonable for the level (unless you get one of the bugged presents that spawn toys 20 or 30 levels above you). However, in high level areas, the toy ventari and the princess dolls are waaaay “overtuned”. Which is to say, they’re OP. Six toys all spreading ranged aoe damage and all having multiple buffs and retaliation=dead pc.
I want it back as well. There’s also a topic about this under the bug report subforum, fyi.
I just want to agree with this. I have 4 alts and I like to preview pretty much everything to see if it’s a skin I will want to hang onto, weapon or armor. This seems like a pretty pointless change.
Plains of Ashford again. Downleveled to level 12 but got 5 level 31 Princess Dolls. One of them oneshotted me. Someone tried to rez me and they got one shotted as well. Thanks to Roy the Wanderer for trying though. Can I haz refund on repairs and wp costs?
The entire of GW2 should not be designed around a minority of players who have trouble. Pretty silly thing to say.
Wow. Way to support someone with a disability. A solution is easy-make 2 or 3 levels of difficulty. Easy=slow melting snowflakes. Hard=fast melting. You get the same achievement but better rewards for the harder one. Simple.
Someone will say there is no “tagging” in this game.
According to pre-launch developer interviews, players need to do somewhere between 5-10% of the damage necessary to kill a monster in order to receive credit for killing it.
As there are only so many “5-10%” slices to go around, it should be obvious that once you pile more than X players on the same target, someone is going to lose out.
This was a huge problem during the Ancient Karka event. Many players received almost no loot during the entire 2-3 hour battle. Others were receiving drops consistently. In a recent AMA on Reddit, ANet claimed that was a “bug”.
It can’t be quite that simple. The dragon events typically have a lot more than 20 players (which would be roughly 5% damage each). Yet everyone gets chest loot for the most part. The only time I did not get the chest was one time that I was late for Claw of Jormag. He was almost dead already but I jumped in and went all bursty but to no avail. I got credit for the event but no chest.
So there may be different formulas for random open world mobs vs. mobs in DEs.
I’ll be honest, I can’t imagine running around Orr with a staff/fire build. Way too squishy. The mobs there, with their CC, will simply eat you alive. But it will be interesting to see. Maybe I’m wrong.
Credit where credit is due. I’ve seen far, far fewer bots lately. The vast herds of bears followed by an entire football stadium’s worth of rangers seems to have gone the way of the dodo bird.
@Light: a level 80 character completing a level 5 event receives a little less money, karma, and experience than he would have received had he instead completed a level 80 event, but a) the difference isn’t that much and b) you can complete several level 5 events in the amount of time it takes to complete a single level 80 event. In the end, you actually earn more karma, money and experience in the lower level zones from event rewards.
Sorry, that’s just not true. The Plinx chain doesn’t take long at all and the karma/drops/etc are vastly superior to what I’d get in a low level zone, even after the nerf. And there are plenty of other events to run, especially in Straits of Devastation. So I get more karma, higher level loot, t5/6 crafting mats, etc. that I wouldn’t get otherwise.
I will say this, I think we should not have to choose between having what you call fun and having to grind. I think Orr is a grind. I do not enjoy being there as much as I enjoyed many of the other maps. The mobs suck.
But I have goals for my character and reaching those goals is more fun for me even if I have to endure Orr to get them.
To the best of my memory, I’ve never even gotten a yellow from any of the dragon chests. So I only do Jormag now if I happen to be in Frostgorge farming when he comes up. Greens and blues for me every time.
to downscale ever further you first need a reason to go back to those low level zones and there’s none.
There are two:
100% map completion.
Play with an under leveled friend.
Nuka is correct, there’s no reason to go back. It takes maybe an hour or two (at most) to complete a low level map as an 80. Once that’s done, there’s no reason to go back.
Sure, some people will help an low level friend, but really, even on level most of those maps are soloable with the occasional need for a little assistance on a Skill Point or something. But even going to help a friend is a pain because it’s less time the 80 is earning level-appropriate rewards.
I’m happy to help sometimes, but I need to progress towards my goals as well at level 80 and I can’t do that by looting level 20 or 30 blues. So time spent in low level zones is basically charity.
I vote for nuking Orr with a deer bomb
It’s the only way to be sure.
Fittingly enough, water attunement seems to kick butt underwater.
Oddly, yeah. I pretty much just stick to water attunement underwater. Signets work well underwater. Signet of fire will help with DPS and water will help keep the mobs off you and lower their dps.
I’d agree with almost all this. I don’t want something so powerful that it has to be on cooldown for 2 hours but at the same time, as an elementalist, the elite skills are lacking. I only have 1 underwater elite that I don’t even use and the only land based elite I use is the elemental summoning one. And I think something like 80% of elementalists use that same elite skill because the others just aren’t as useful. Tornado maybe once in a while.
Unless they change the crafting materials that drop, there’s no reason for me to take either of my 80s back to a low level zone. Right now, I need all the T6 mats I can get and I can’t get those from low level areas. Change the drops so that I can get what I need and I’d be more than happy to go back to help or do DEs or whatever. And I wouldn’t even care if I’m downleveled more.
In fact, I’d prefer it. I really, really hate Orr but the only other option is Frostgorge Sound and that gets old after a while.
I can’t remember any Champ/Vet dropping things for me that couldn’t have dropped from a regular mob. It’s either nothing at all, or white vendor thrash in most cases. Sometimes a blue. I honestly noticed no difference after the alleged change, for good or worse.
My experience has been exactly the same. To the point that I just don’t bother to kill the vets that I run across unless they are between me and node I need to harvest. Much easier/faster to kill regular mobs and get the same (lack of) drops.
No opinion one way or the other, but in regards to the personal story, either it can be soloed or it can’t. If you can’t complete it solo, then it’s not solo-friendly. And you can’t.
Looks over prestige here as well. I actually prefer the look of the T1 light cultural armor for my elementalist over the look of the T3 light, so I’m going with that.
still can’t figure out why people call wvw pvp. they are not the same thing…at all.
In regards to the monthly only. Does the requirement require that I defeat (i.e. kill) other players (human beings) then YES this is PVP. So it should be either event only WvW needed or be moved to a PvP monthly.
no it is not. defeating another player with no skill/gear restrictions, using npc’s to distract them, etc is NOT pvp.
there is a reason why anet has structured pvp….let’s not forget it. wvw is as unstructured as the pve world.
i wonder if any the qqers here have even stepped foot into the mists? pvp and wvw are so different it boggles my mind that people are drawing conclusions that they are one and the same…
Ok, cool. So I’ll go wander around the mists solo and do all the things I need to do for the monthly, based on your assurance of how it’s just like PvE.
Because they wanted to put together an achievement that rewarded players who were participating in all parts of the game.
Except if that’s their goal, they failed. Now, PvP players can do both easily while PvE players can’t get either..
I’m confused. PVP players can get the the PvE aspects (including FoTM) easily, but PvE players can’t get the WvW aspects easily? Is the WvW aspect too hard?
Because some people don’t like PvP. Other people don’t like PvE. I’m not sure how that’s a hard concept to grasp.
And yes, one player killing another player is PvP, call it whatever you want.
Because they wanted to put together an achievement that rewarded players who were participating in all parts of the game.
Except if that’s their goal, they failed. Now, PvP players can do both easily while PvE players can’t get either. Maybe make 3 different types of Monthly. Monthly-ALL, Monthly-PvE only, Monthly-PvP only.
For now, it’s just Monthly with WvW (which is PvP) and Monthly PvP.
My reason for soloing is simply my very erratic time schedule. Sometimes I can play for an hour, sometimes for a whole day. But I never know when I might need to stop so it seems unfair to others for me to group up when I may bail at any moment. I doubt there’s much ANet can do to help those in my boat.
Having said that, I would like some way to find a guild easier. I’ve played games that had sort of a lfg tool but for guilds. So you could see what guilds were on your server, what they focused on (PvE, dungeons, PvP, whatever) and how many members etc. I don’t see any tools like that to make it easier to find a casual guild that may fit me.
snip…snip… I kill 1 creature and literally 45 seconds later it spawns back.
I wish it was at least 45 seconds. There are many places that I kill a mob and it respawns instantly. There are even times I kill a mob and right as I land the death blow it respawns so I haven’t even had a chance to loot it and I’m already fighting the respawn.
That’s ridiculous, though as others mentioned I’ve adapted. For some POIs now, I don’t even bother to fight. I summon all my pets, throw them in the area, run in to get the POI and run out. It’s just too much trouble to try and clear the path in the way that I’m used to for other mmos.
I doubt this is how ANet intended us to play the game but it’s the path of least resistance.
After I first got 5 points in that trait line and saw a Jagged Horror pop up, I thought it would be cool. Then it died before I even got to the next mob. I tried to figure out what it’s purpose was but have never come up with a single situation that it would be helpful in. The only thing that it seems to do is prompt my toon to talk about how useful it was and every time I roll my eyes.
Ferguson’s Crossing, overflow, no event. Workers still building trebuchet but it looks completed.
I agree with Dante-my necro alt would love some condition damage/toughness/vitality gear.
Clockwork-me too. I think they’ve changed things up a bit to make it less obvious they are bots. But it’s still pretty obvious. I saw a group of 4 last night in Sparkfly Fen that was 3 rangers and 1 engi. So, yeah, they threw in an engineer to fool everyone, lol. I took a screenshot and reported it.
Also unable to enter the “Perils of Friendship” instance. Same issue, eventually program force closes and I have to log back in. I’ve tried many times this morning. No other problems and am able to travel to Queensdale etc without issues.
So I’m a ranger trying to do “A Tangle of Weeds”. You have stuck me with a sword and my character is completely ranged normally. You also took my pet away when half my traits are geared towards pet support. I don’t really see how this is a “personal” story when I’m being forced to play as a warrior or something.
This is not fun. Seriously, the personal stories are badly done, imho. Some of them are fun, some are just a complete pain in the kitten and it feels more like a chore to do them than playing a game. /whinemode
I like the animations as well. There’s something about them that makes the character sort of innocent. And to be honest, I did not even want to roll a Sylvari at first. I only did it because I wanted to see the Sylvari story and now I’m making this my main character.
The one i have a real problem is the one where you have to use the slow mortis verge to protect the queen. The npcs allies all died and then the undead just gang up on me.
That’s Queen’s Justice. The same one I can’t finish even 15 levels higher.
I’m posting just to agree. I mentioned in another thread where I am in the story and what I play, but wanted to add here that this is incredibly frustrating. I’ve also played mmos for years (about 15 or so) and have never encountered this level of frustration.
I suck at PvP and am more than willing to accept my deaths there. But I’m prettykittengood at PvE. Often not dying more than a couple of times in other games from character creation to max level. However, in GW2’s Personal Story line, I can’t get past the level 28 quest. I’m level 42 now.
This is frustrating as kitten.
So so so very much agree. I’m an Engineer, circus oriented, Dromund Priory membership seeking guy trying to get through Queen’s Justice, a level 28 quest. I’m now level 42 and still can’t complete it solo. I have screenshots of me lying on the floor dead while about 8 or 9 (sometimes more) mobs hover over me.
Honestly, I’ve just given up the personal storyline. I play solo because of odd hours and this is just too frustrating. The rest of the game is great but seriously, I can’t face that mission one more time or my monitor will suffer the consequences.
I have to agree. At level 40, I’ve had to go back to Queensdale to gather more materials to level my crafting (Leathworking and Huntsman) because I did not find enough just in the natural course of leveling through the area the first time. It’s a pain.
