6th playable race, what's your top 3 pick?

The only race I could currently see as being playable in the near future in the tengu. They were a widespread race, there are many varieties, and there is the possiblity for appearances we’ve never seen in game (thinking tengu from Elona and other parts of the world), they have a sizable city and possible starting area, are seem to be waiting to make their move in the world.
They also seem to have knowledge of a previous dragon rise, which could make them valuable allies should the extent of that knowledge be revealed in the future.

1.) Draken ~ a reptilian aquatic race resembling drakes or alligators. Gw2 could use an aquatic race. The largos are cool too though, but an alligator race would be awesome.

I’ve had similar ideas but I’d expect them more in Elona (perhaps ELonian behemoths are a primitive offshoot?) or in another part of the world we haven’t seen. They’d probably be viewed by other races with distrust initially given the current stance on krait. They’d also have to live up to other reptilian racial standards (Forgotten/Naga).

Another idea I had for a desert dwelling culture (possibly in the far east portions of the Crystal Desert) might be something with inspirations from Egyptian culture would be a race that vaguely resembles a jackal type creature. I got the idea from watching the second movie from The Mummy series.

When were the Norn first discovered?

The first mention of them is at the time of the battle with the Great Destroyer (1078 AE). I would expect the first encounter with humans would be whenever the Ebon Vanguard discovered the Eye itself. The charr knew of them at least as far back as the Searing because it was the norn who allowed them to cut through the Far Shiverpeaks so they could then turn south to invade Kryta.

Humans.

Well the humans were the only playable race in Guild Wars 1 so much of the lore in the game surrounds them or is written from a human perspective. They also ruled 3 continents. In Guild Wars 2, Zhaitan just happens to be located in the ruins of Arah, formerly the capital of Orr and the city of the gods. They were the favored race of the gods. While most of the existing lore is centered on them, newer lore has gradually shifted the focus from humans to the other four major races.

The significance of humans in Guild Wars 2 is that Kryta is the last free human kingdom. Elona has been conquered by Palawa Joko and Cantha has become an isolationist empire. The Elder Dragons have cut off access to those continents as well. Orr was destroyed in the Cataclysm and, with the exception of the Stronghold of Ebonhawke, the kingdom of Ascalon has fallen to the charr.

Does that answer your question?

Yes, I’d have made the same argument as Konig, irregardless of who *seems* to be the favored side. It’s unfair to take sides or promote one side over another when it’s supposed to be left to the players, *not* ArenaNet, to decide the outcome.

Tastiest Race?

I think you guys are confusing species with races.

Sentient beings – people.

By your definition skale are people. Sapient would more appropriately describe the races while sentient describes the more animal-like creatures of Tyria.

Six Elder Dragons not Five * Spoilers *

@Red Actually, 5 vs 6 refers the five races who survived the last dragon cycle and the number of dragons they faced according to jotun stela writings.
The races: dwarves, seers, mursaat, jotun, and forgotten
The EDs (according to what we currently know): Primordus, Zhaitan, Jormag, Kralkatorrik, and 2 currently unnamed dragons (one being the DSD and the other may or may not still exist).

We do not have any information that would indicate any of the Elder Dragons being non-hostile to other life forms.

Resettling of Orr

Nothing says it. Though it makes sense that he would look for new acquisitions in the area of a current power vacuum. Not to mention it may be possible for him to steal their allegiance after Zhaitan’s death. We do not know what kind of control his minions really have, and/or how long it will last.

I would guess the death of the master would have one of two possible outcomes.
1. The existing minions (in this case Risen) would die. – I find this theory rather anti-climactic.
2. The existing minions would continue to operate at a basic level and the potential threat would diminish as they are killed off. – I find this to be more likely. Once the minions are gone, I would expect the Pact to retain control of the region as a staging ground against Kralkatorrik and they would also continue working to revert the corruption as was done at Artesian Waters. The waters flowed out from there throughout the rest of Orr but I expect some pockets of corruption to remain in isolated areas.

Some thoughts on magic in Tyria

in Lore

Magic was created by Abaddon early on, and then the other gods contained that magic into bloodstones, limiting its power. This caused Abaddon to get angry, his gift having been supressed, and eventually he was beaten back into his realm, then the events of NF in gw1 happened much later.

Abaddon didn’t create magic, nor did the gods create the bloodstones (those were created by the seers). The gods simply split the magic within them into the four schools we know today as Preservation, Aggression, Denial, and Destruction.

Magic is basically another aspect of nature which is imbued into all things, and the learning of it happens most in the form of latent ability, apprenticeship style learning, and military training.

You’re somewhat correct. The way I understand magic, some people have an innate ability to use it from an early age with little training. Others require years of practice and study to become good. The more advanced/powerful the spell, the more time is needed to learn to use it properly. Weapons seem to act as a medium for channeling magic into spells but are not necessarily required to use it.

I always thought that the ‘adventurer’ professions – thief, engineer, ranger – were pretty non-magical or at least low-magic. They tend to use technology and technique to achieve their effects – with a few grey areas like ranger spirits. ‘Scholar’ or caster professions are obviously all strongly tied to Bloodstone-type magic. Then among the ‘soldier’ or heavy armour classes, we have one very non-magic (the warrior) and one very magical (the guardian).

The adventurer classes are a mix. Rangers’ spirits are magic. The engineer uses more technology than magic and the thief uses a mix of both. The guardian is a blend of the monk and paragon, so it uses both physical power and magic while the warrior is purely physical. The scholars are closer to the schools because they use magic for almost everything.

There is also the case of Orrians use magic as a tool in their everyday lives. So the ability to use magic definately varies from person to person and tends to be more common among those of higher level education.

Tengu, Largos, Heket (so we can got to elona… Hylek are tyrian Heket are elonian.)

That’s actually a valid point. Technically they aren’t the same thing so it might be possible for them to become playable while their Tyrian cousins are a minor race. +10 points for thinking beyond Tyria but not too far. :P

I see no need for a retcon. He’s from another Pale Tree somewhere to the west. After you do that part of the PS he goes off to find this tree for himself. Probably a plot thread left open for a future expansion.

I would love Grawl, Tengu and Dredge to become playable.

You’re missing out Kodan and Largo

Grawl will never be playable due to being a lesser race that others can choose as a racial sympathy. They would also have a difficult time regardless of this because they’re one of the races that has made little, if any, advancement in culture or technology over the past 250 years.
The problem with dredge is they’re extremely xenophobic and kill anything that isn’t one their own. Yes, they have internal problems of their own but they have too many disadvantages that would prevent them from being a playable race without a major overhaul.
The kodan all look the same so there would be a definite lack of customization. There’s also no way to distinguish genders without speaking to them which has its own problems.
Largos may have potential but the lack of information on them cannot be ignored. I would need to know more before making a judgment as to whether or not they could be playable.
With the exception of tengu, none of these races have a starting area or major city. The only one that could go either way is the largos, again this as a result of the lack of information on them.
