Combat Mechanics Oddities

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: ZombieLeach.5862

ZombieLeach.5862

Since I didn’t see another thread quite like this I figured I’d make one. How combat functions and how skills, traits, and sigils/runes interact with those mechanics can be rather odd at times and cause certain issues that should be addressed in the future to help iron out the combat experience and even make certain thing viable to use. I’ll describe a couple as examples.

  • When in an enemies face that you’re targeting to the point that the end of the player character’s weapon (rifles are especially good at causing this) sticks into the enemy’s character model the projectile fires back at the enemy. This happens when the player model is facing the targeted enemy, but the end of the weapon is in the enemy’s character model causing the bullet to fire backwards towards the enemy to register the hit(usually up and back diagonally from my experience). This effects piercing damage bullet paths such as Warrior’s Volley making it impossible to use in close range. Longer rifle models are worse off because of this.
  • Enemies that don’t give experience don’t trigger traits and sigils that proc on a kill. This limits how often you get a charge from sigils that stack charges for various effects (usually stacking stat increases) on kills and traits such as Necromancer’s, Reaper Traitline, Grandmaster, Reaper’s Onslaught (Which reduces the cooldown of shroud abilities on a kill). The number of enemies that don’t trigger is a surprising amount, most event spawned enemies at in higher level zones don’t cause a trigger.

What I want to do is create a list of these type of oddities so the devs can have an easy to access resource. What I need you to do is describe an oddity that annoys you so I can add it to this list. Thank you.

Advice on a more supportive Necromancer?

in Necromancer

ZombieLeach.5862

Support Necro would be better if Reaper’s Onslaught triggered the cooldown reduction better in PvE. As it stands it only triggers on normal enemies and certain few ones in events (specifically the enemies that give you exp). Makes Transfusion and even Path of Corruption worse than they should be in PvE.

Reaper's Onslaught

in Necromancer

Posted by: ZombieLeach.5862

ZombieLeach.5862

The issue with Reaper’s Onslaught is that the cooldown reduction doesn’t proc on every kill only the normal spawned enemies that give exp and those few during events that do as well. This is a problem for any Reaper who wants to use it because during events where it would be most helpful over half the enemies you tag don’t count for the trait. Not only does this make the trait nearly useless, but also effects half a dozen other traits and skills.

Skills and Traits this effects:
Reaper Shroud Skills 2-5
Transfusion (Blood Magic Trait Line)
Path of Corruption (Curses Trait Line)

To change this they could just have event spawned enemies give zero exp, but not show it on screen. That way any other skill that triggers on enemy death also gets the proc. I’m no programmer, but I don’t see how that would be too big a change.

To close this I have a couple questions. Why is this trait tied to experience in the first place? Why wasn’t it designed with event spawned enemies in mind? Would this be a difficult thing to change? Is this even worth changing? Did I miss something this effects?

Sure, players like that are annoying, but the damage to the already small pvp community a system like what you’re suggesting would be a slap to the face of everyone playing the game type. They aren’t that common anyway, wanting to ban new players from the game type until they play 400-ish games would ruin any chance of the community growing. Just take a breath and realize that there are players like that on the other team as well. Farm them if it makes you feel better, but don’t damage the community because you’re annoyed.

I don’t believe daily ap should be removed, restructured, or the cap removed. Anet should just turn the Daily ap cap into an achievement and award ap for dailies that way. 1 daily completion a tier with 1600 tiers and 10 ap a tier sounds good to me. (The cap is 16,000, right?)

[Suggestions] Underwater Combat

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: ZombieLeach.5862

ZombieLeach.5862

Although I agree that an underwater expansion is a ways off I believe that the combat should be fixed before then so the bugs can be worked out. I will not be happy if Anet markets a fix for underwater combat as a feature of an expansion. I want content, not fixes for content that should already be working. My hope is to start the discussion so they know what we want and don’t want that way we can avoid what happened with WvW and HOT.

My point is: they aren’t going to do anything at all with underwater combat anytime soon, because there’s too much to do first.

Consequently, I think there’s little point is starting the discussion until the existing content is stabilized and they get better at delivering a consistent amount of quality content on a regular basis. If they can’t do that, there won’t be an underwater expansion, because there won’t be any expansions.

And when they do decide it’s time to get wet, of course they’ll fix the existing issues (and I would hope, ask for feedback about it). Fresh underwater zones might be gated by an expac, but the generic updates and fixes won’t be. (Just the same as the four new legendaries are gated by HoT, but the fixes to the events that drop collection items are fixed for everyone.)

I understand your point. I understand that Anet have a lot on their plates, future Living World seasons, the next expac which they’re currently working on, the WvW fixes, PvP balance and the mess of that entire game type, Adding new items to the BLTP to generate revenue, and the QoL changes they’ve been adding to name a few. My point is that an Underwater Combat fix will never come if we don’t start the discussion. If there’s no desire for a fix in the community there’s no incentive for Anet to fix it. And they have been known to push needed fixes back until they are forced to impliment them. Think PvP leagues and the WvW fixes that should have been done shortly after or at the game’s launch.

And don’t be so sure they’ll fix things in between an expac, which is what I want, because the WvW fixes were marketed as a HOT expac thing. The only reason it wasn’t was because the scope pushed it back.

That’s all off topic. The point of this thread is so those who desire to can post what they want from underwater combat and possible ways to fix them in the hopes a fix comes sooner than later. What’s on their table is subject to change after all. And in that vein of thinking…

- A completely free moving camera, no artificial stops in the vertical position. It’s also an issue when trying to target things at your feet in action camera, this would solve that issue as well

- All skills being made available underwater. All of them.

- a jumping puzzle style underwater explorable cave which uses new mechanics to drive the difficulty, perhaps a drowning mechanic or the mechanic they use in the underwater paths beneath Tangled Depths.

- An underwater world boss or possibly a second Tequatl fight where you chase him underwater and finish him off.

No getting rid of my trident. I like my trident.

In my idea Staff would double as the trident which includes the skins being made available for staff as well. And Riffle would double as the harpoongun, so, not really getting rid of either just combining.

A while back, ANet said that they weren’t happy with underwater combat, but that they didn’t have immediate plans to revamp it. There were bigger (and tastier) fish to fry. Around that time, they removed a lot of underwater areas from maps (including wvw) and since that time, they haven’t done anything to update aquatic fights. On the contrary, it’s been neglected (with the exception of the nearly useless recipes for ascended breathers) — the worst example is that revenant only has a single underwater weapon and the most common e.g. is that ANet stopped releasing new skins for aquatic weapons (new BL sets include on 16 instead of 19 skins).

I can’t see that anything has changed to make ANet choose differently: there are still bigger (and tastier) fish to fry. If NCSOFT’s investors heard correctly that ANet is going to try to release more expansions more often, then I wouldn’t expect to see a change to aquatic before expansion #3 or #4, if that ‘soon’.

tl;dr underwater combat isn’t likely to change anytime soon, despite its issues or how cool it could be

(full disclosure: I like underwater combat)

Although I agree that an underwater expansion is a ways off I believe that the combat should be fixed before then so the bugs can be worked out. I will not be happy if Anet markets a fix for underwater combat as a feature of an expansion. I want content, not fixes for content that should already be working. ZombieLeach.5862

Ok, so, I really want to like underwater combat, and when the came launched almost 4 years ago now, I spend much of my time underwater (Almost as much time as I did on land). The prospect of fighting Bubbles (The Elder Dragon of the Sea who is yet to be named) in the Unending Ocean is something I’m looking forward to, but don’t see happening if Anet and the community continue to ignore it. There are some problems with it I think everyone knows and believe there are some fixes that could open up a whole new realm of possibilities for the game. Below are my notes on underwater combat, what the problems are, and how they can be fixed. My hope is to spur a discussion on what people’s issues with Underwater Combat is and how those problems can be addressed. I hope my notes aren’t too difficult to follow.

Pros

-Potential for some beautiful Scenery
-More space for combat means there’s a potential for some large scale battles
-Underwater caves are fun to explore.

Cons

-The third demension adds another level of difficulty for movement
-The Camera doesn’t aim vertical correctly when underwater making ascending and descending a pain. (This is the biggest problem IMO.)
-Not all skills work underwater which limits build diversity unnecessarily
-Very limited Weapon choices cause the same problems.

Concerns

-My biggest concern is that there isn’t enough feedback on this topic for Anet to know what we want and how to impliment it to drive interest in the underwater combat.
-My Secondary concern is that Anet will ignore this portion of the game completely leaving what could be the best underwater combat system in an mmo to date to fester and die because they don’t want to mess with it.

Solutions

-Remove the camera’s stops in the up and down looking angles so the camera can move freely without running into artificial barriers. This will allow the camera to better be used for ascending and descending in water.

-This is a little more tricky, but here’s what I would do. Remove the trident and the Speargun completely since the Staff and Riffle can act as replacements. Make spear a land based weapon as well and simply us the land based skills underwater. This goes for the elite and utility skills as well, but make all of them available. This would mean Anet wouldn’t have to balance two sets of weapon skills (Land and Water) since balancing land skills would balance water skills as well, AND we’d get the Spear weapon people have been asking for. As an additional note, skills that are ground targeted and flat such as Shadow Refuge for thief, the Symbols for Guardian, and all traps need to be a sphere like the guardian’s shield 5, preferably colored red like the red circles, so that the vertical demensions are accounted for.

Besides, this season there were no titles or achievements when I reached legendary and it was still worth it, even if it was quite the struggle compared to reaching legend in previous seasons.

Although I understand where you’re coming from and would agree that there is some level of playful banter on the part of competitive players that can be expected, there is a big difference when it comes to death threats, name calling to hurt, blocking because a player is “bad,” blaming a single person for a team’s loss, or even taking your anger to the forums to complain because you’re angry. When playful banter and calm discussion turns into name calling and shout matches the anger has gone too far.

- Ingame voice chat. That’s all I need to say.

Personal Story Rework Suggestions

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: ZombieLeach.5862

ZombieLeach.5862

I couldn’t think of anywhere else to put this, so, I put it here. I was playing through the Norn Personal Story steps involving the Giant Jotun with my brother (because I’ve been trying to get him to play the game) and he was very “underwhelmed” as he gently put it. His biggest gripe was that the story built up these ‘big’ moments, but the fights that were supposed to be “kitten” not only were over far too quickly (Even though I was roughly the correct level WITH NO ARMOR OR TRINKETS) but the look of the bosses weren’t impressive in the least. Another interesting quote from my brother is, “With a name like Giant King I was expecting something big, and it turns out to be a fat guy.” He hasn’t played it since. How can I convert any of my friends to the game when a big part of the game is in such a state? How? I would really like an answer to this. I showed him the World Bosses, namely Shadow Behemoth and the Fire Elemental and he was much more impressed (still hasn’t played it since though, sad day).

I didn’t see a suggestion this topic anywhere, if there is I apologize. I also understand that there is very little time to spare for this part of the game considering the current projects on Anet’s table, I really get it, but there’s nothing wrong with accumulating ideas, right? So here are a few suggestions that hopefully won’t take too long.

1. Update the “bosses” in each story step (Giant King Korag and Legionnaire Urvan Steelbane to name a couple) with more health to make the fight last longer and a more impressive appearance (larger for some, shiny bits for others). This should limit the let down from being built up to them and being completely underwhelmed by the fight.

2. With the ability of npc’s to check for achievements like the Squat Leader Bennett in Bloodstone Fen checking for raid completion to adjust his dialogue I don’t think it would be too hard to use that to smooth out some of the PS dialogue like Trahearne introducing people you’ve already met in previous story steps. I wouldn’t mind seeing some achievements added specifically for this.

3. Take out certain story decisions to pad out some sections of the story. Such as the Charr “Building your warband” sections, it seems so short. I’m sure there’s others, but I mostly know the Charr story. :/

Please add you suggestions.

Pact Numbers?

Other than those we personally see? We only know this amount for Mordremoth.

Population has always been a big “never talk about” thing when it comes to Anet and GW2. We don’t know how many asura, norn, charr, humans, or sylvari there are. We don’t know the size of the Orders, or military forces. Nor the size of the Pact.

Nor casualty numbers in wars.

I think t’s funny that there are more skritt on that list than Charr. Either no one cares enough about the Charr to put there names on the list or they are simply kittenes who don’t die. I fully intend to believe the later. I doubt it is an indication of population.

I think the biggest problem with GW2 pvp isn’t the matchmaking, but the skill level needed to be a good player. Most would think that as long as you can win fights you’re good, but in pvp that’s not the case. It’s all about rotations and that isn’t very intuitive. In wvw you have commanders to direct people, in pve it’s not really needed, and in raids there s pre-planning. Pvp has none of those elements. You have to trust that you teammates know where they need to be and when or the whole team suffers. I don’t believe complaining about matchmakng is going to help anything.

ZombieLeach.5862

I’m typing this on my phone during my 15 minute break at work so this will be brief, but I want to know what people’s opinion is on this observation. I’ve observed that the end game score seems to be more volitile than most give it credit for (in other words, a big lead in score doesn’t mean a complete blowout). I’ve played games were the score is 100-500, but the winnng team barely holds their points for most of the game or where the winning team gets wrecked in fights but rotates better winning more score. To keep this short (I’m nearly out of time) I’ve heard people complain that a score of 100-500 means that there is something intrinsically wrong with matchmaking, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. There are so many factors that impact end game score that it isn’t really a measure of how the match has gone. Think of all the casters that have stated that the score doesn’t reflect how close a match is. What is your opinion? Have you had really close games that the score showed a blowout?

What you’re saying is that balance in a “competitive” game with a competitive league doesn’t matter to you?

So what you’re saying is that you only care about competative PvP and none of the other game types? You know that this is a casual game right, not competetive? I’d think Anet not adding a proper leage for over 3 years would tell you that. And to be clear, no I don’t reroll every balance update. I main Warrior with Engi as my secondary.

To clarify what I said, I think the expectation of 3-5 builds per class, per game type is a bit extreme. 1-2 is what I expect. And to add, I can understand the salt at the lack of weak weapon, skill, & trait tweaks. It’s a legit irritation.

As a PvE ranger that used mainhand axe the majority of the time I disagree with you. Sure it sucks if the axe is your main damage output, but as a utility weapon set it has great functionality. Stacking might through the AA (before the buff to it’s might generation) I could get anywhere from 8-15 stacks of might from the AA alone depending on how many enemies there were and with my chosen secondary of warhorn could get 15-25 fairly comfortably (might I ad my setup gave me swiftness, fury, and regen as well). It left me enough might to deal good burst damage with the warhorn #4 and longbow #2 & #5 skills before switching back. Granted I used it more for power than condi, but the chill is decent and the axe 2 skill was good for tagging enemies as is the axe AA. I haven’t tried it, but the shortbow or sword mainhand with torch may be a good complimentary second set. The benefit hybrid weapons have over power or condi weapons is that you can destroy destructables while still dealing decent overall damage. I prefer hybrid weapons in PvE.

@RodOfDeath, I agree that build diversity has gone down since launch. Not only because of the lack of choices one can make post-HoT, but also because of the rise of single points of reference like metabattle.com where many starters get their builds and never try anything else.

I wouldn’t want it to get any worse than is already is…so, “No” I think we should be free to experiment in WvW.

You do realize that the current gear system in WvW limits build deversity due to the grind for gear and that a gwskills.net style pannel for gear would keep build deversity while removing the barrier for entry and allow for more on the fly experimentation, right?

It’s missing something to be useful. My suggestion would be a 25% CD reduction for banners. That would make the elite banner’s CD 180s (the same as Rampage) and the Utility ones 90s which is the same as their duration meaning they would have a 100% uptime if you used them properly. I don’t think that’s too much of a problem considering regen and a few stat points aren’t that big a help in the grand scheme of things. What do you think? What would you like to see added to make it a viable trait?

how about all the other things that were never promised yet they still came like gliding in central tyria, Shatterer revamp, squad revamps, those dont count for anything?

of course it doesn’t count for anything. If you’re buying a product you look at the list of features and those features better be in it, as you’re buying a product based on it.
If you looked to buy a third person RPG with an open world and 100 different skills to level, you won’t be happy when you find out that the product that you actually bought is an isometric view RPG with instance based world and only 88 skills. And it won’t matter to you if afterwards they said “but we added bunnies and we never advertised them”!

What Anet did here counts as fraud. And because of that I urge everyone to report them to trade associations.

you know what the irony is here… none of this were actually listed part of HoT
dont believe me, just check heartofthorns.guildwars2.com and try to find where 16 new legendary weapons is listed. its not. This was content that was promised along side HoT not part of HoT.

Not that I am suggesting its okey for Anet to back on their word, they should still honor it of course and its not like they said otherwise either but it certainly does mean its not fraud so lets just shelf the heavy words and focus on the issue at hand.

You can’t craft the new Legendaries unless you have the Mastery that came with HoT, so I would say it’s part of it. If it wasn’t part of it it you could still do it even if you didn’t own HoT.

Not necassarily. It wouldn’t be the first time a game company has gated side content behind expansion/DLC content. It’s a strategy to get players to pay for the extra content.
