Suggestion about skimpy armour imbalance.

in Suggestions

applecup.3047

Before I type any further I just want to put a disclaimer:

I know that some players (of whatever gender) like dressing their toons (of whatever gender) in skimpy armour for whatever reason. This post is not aimed at you. Go forth and continue to do whatever the kitten you want.

What I am tired of is the imbalance between male and female armour design.

I am tired of sets like heavy Whispers and heavy Phalanx which have inexplicable boob windows and thigh windows, and sets like heavy Vigil which have huge gaps in their side, leaving vital organs highly vulnerable (for a military organisation? really?) – while their male equivalents have none of the above. I get that people want some sexy armours, but… frankly boob and gut windows are not sexy, they’re ridiculous, and an insult to the game and its world, to the artists and designers and players both.

I am tired of the mistmatch between male and female outfits. Masquearade, Phoenix, Feathered… particularly in light armour, the male and female armours look completely different. If you want to have a skimpy armour for female characters, fine, but let the men show some thigh (and chest, and shoulder, and…). The phoenix armour (Kasmeer’s armour) is particularly bad in this respect – the male armour has basically nothing in common with the female design. Why can’t I have my male ele or mesmer (or necro) trailing feathers where he goes? Why can’t I have my female ele or mesmer (or necro) wearing something that looks much closer to robes than it does to underwear?

Masquearade armour is another particularly egregerious example of this; the female set is some bizarre fetish underwear setup which is apparently held in place by sheer willpower (and/or double sided sticky tape), whereas the male set is… a fairly practical looking set of robes.

If you want to show off some leg (or midriff, or underboob, or cleavage) on a female toon you have more options than you can shake a stick at (and conversely, if you want to dress your toons more conservatively and/or practically, you have very limited options). If you want to show off some leg/chest/etc on a male toon you have very limited options (almost nonexistent for light and medium, perversely), but have plenty of options for armour that is conservative and/or practical.

(“practical” here used for a given value thereof, given as this is a fantasy game)

TO REITERATE: I am not against skimpy armours, I simply feel that they should be equal opportunity and offered alongside a (preferably) equal number of non-skimpy options. I am not criticising people who choose to dress their toons in whatever manner they please.

I get that what is currently in the game will probably remain the way it is (though I would plead you do something about charr tail clipping, etc). But I beg of you, Arenanet, please consider making future armour sets look like part of the same set, regardless of gender; offer more options for female characters who don’t want to show all their skin, and for male ones who do.

thank you.

Why I gave up on SAB.

in Super Adventure Box: Back to School

Posted by: applecup.3047

applecup.3047

Before I begin: I accept that I am not the world’s best player. I am disabled; I have an arthritic condition, and I can only play for so long before I am in too much pain to continue, especially continues JPs like SAB. I enjoyed World 1 a lot, and I have enjoyed what I have of World 2 (even if the difficulty and length are both a big step up from the end of World 1).

However last night I encountered the final straw with this content. At the end of 2-3, the final sequence from the ice spike room before the yeti up to the final boss.

1) Tiny ledges. Those really thin ones which you probably shouldn’t be able to jump on but are supposed to anyway and look as though you’re floating in air when you stand on due to the strangeness of collision boxes. I had a difficult enough time aiming for and remaining on these things on my asura. I pity anyone who tried this with a Norn or Charr.

2) Rooms full of spike pits anywhere outside of Tribulation Mode. I mean really? Especially when I don’t even get a chance to line up my next jump before I’m knocked back into the pit by an immediately respawning icicle. Losing progress is punishment enough, especially when I’m expected to expertly clamber up multiple tiny ledges in order to get knocked off the platform again.

3) Disconnects. Seriously, why hasn’t this been looked at yet. The game is a year old and we still don’t even have a five minute grace period for private instances in case of a login server/router tantrum. In my case, the login server had a fit when I’d finally made it to the Storm Wizard after several hours of cursing and failing, got him down to about a third of his HP, and then… “the login server is inaccessible”. Really? It wasn’t even as though my net dropped, as GW2 was the only program that disconnected.

This, for me, was the final straw. Everything I’d endured and figured out and slogged past and bam, it was undone in a split second by something that wasn’t even within reasonable control. Sorry Anet, and to everyone who worked so kitten this, but I’m done.

Even if points one and two are simple cases of “l2p”, please Anet for the love of $deity, fix this. Add persistent checkpoints for long zones, especially in the case of Tribulation Mode. Fix being instantly kicked from instances on a d/c. Something. Anything.

(Before anyone says it: yes, I know infantile mode is a thing that exists, but that won’t get me the academic achievement now will it. I don’t expect everything to be as easy as 1-1 and nor would I want it to be, but I do feel, especially as someone who only really started playing SAB with this update. There is a notable spike when you hit 2-1 compared to the curve in in world 1, and it keeps on spiking. Sadism in Trib mode is fine; not so mch in normal mode, thanks)

[Suggestion] Cutscenes and the Scrying Pool

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: applecup.3047

applecup.3047

I apologise if this has been suggested before, the search function still seems borked to me.

Some of the ‘painterly’ cutscenes that have been produced for the Living Story have been pretty awesome – the Tower of Nightmares exploding, Scarlet’s Demise, the (now non working) cutscene from Marjory’s Journal, etc, and it seems a shame to never be able to see them again.

I think it would be neat if they could be viewable through the scrying pool in the Hall of Monuments, or through something similar in the Home Instance.

As well as this, it could record/allow to be re-viewed things like painterly scenes from the personal story (character creation, joining one’s order, Caithe’s description of Orr in Arah Story, the final scene after the final personal story quest, etc).

These cutscenes are lovely and it would let people re-view parts of their story as well as add a little value to the personal instance.

Commander Tag Changes Feedback [merged]

applecup.3047

Even having to purchase the initial basic blue tag for 300g and being able to “upgrade” to include other optional colours for (say) 25-50g a pop would be better than this. I can understand an acc bound tag costing more than a char bound one but requiring a further 300g per colour, especially since the main game mode that wants this and will benefit from this has such pathetic rewards compared to other areas of the game, is pathetically delusional. An individual commander will take a long time to grind up the 300g; even if a guild clubbed together it would either cost a lot of gold per member or require a very large guild, and even then, there is no sign of guild-only tags.

Anet, please reconsider the cost of additional colours!

Suggestion about skimpy armour imbalance.

Yes, there are some female gamers and some who read comics, but they far fewer than their male counterparts.

I have no idea about comics, and I don’t know what the exact figures are for GW2, but recent surveys show that around 50% of gamers are female. This idea that women are a tiny minority of gamers also needs to die; it is horrifically inaccurate.

I thought all of this “fluff” was just part of the MMO experience. Isn’t that what skimpy armor and flaming weapons are all about? It’s eye candy, and not meant to be taken seriously.

If it’s “fluff”, then why are so many people opposed to the idea of parity in armour skimpiness?

Again: I am not calling for no skimpy armour. I am simply requesting that there are more non-skimpy options for those who want them, and for where armour sets for female toons are designed as skimpy, for those sets to also be (as) revealing for male characters (and vice versa, where an armour set is unrevealing, it is unrevealing for both sexes).

Feedback/Questions: Town clothes, Costumes, & Combat

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: applecup.3047

applecup.3047

I just want to chime in with the other people disappointed in the change to tonics for ‘some’ ‘discontinued’ gem store town clothes. It’s the rather conspicuous fly in the ointment of an otherwise generally awesome system. I’m not an RPer, not have I bought a ton of clothes, but I am pleased with the looks I have and frankly don’t have the patience to reapply tonics every time I zone/die/dc. I realise that Anet can’t really be held responsible for my laziness, but their rethinking of converting older town clothes to tonics would make me happier.

I also want to add that it sucks that ‘outfits’ have to include their hats (even if they can be hidden), which seriously limits the options for mixing and matching. Right now they are separate items, and both asura boots and charr everything show that clipping issues have never stopped anet from releasing things before. I appreciate that some outfits can’t easily be separated into tops/bottoms, but please consider supporting hats/boots/etc as seperate items when it comes to outfits such as the Mad King’s gear. You know, like they are now.

thank you and have a nice day. c:

It’s just our culture…sex sells. It’s in the movies, it’s on TV, it’s in comic books, it’s everywhere. Sex sells.

I am tired of seeing this argument. It’s simply not true. If it were as simple as “sex sells”, you’d see male bodies objectified and sexualised in the same way female ones are. Spoiler: that doesn’t happen. ‘Sex sells’ is a message sold in order to justify the continued exploitation of women and of female bodies.

Really Anet, for a game that seeks to break the hetero-normative culture that dominates the video game industry, I expect much more from you.

This is like 99% of what frustrates me so much. Guild Wars has been so progressive in some areas (including same-sex relationships without so much as batting an eyelid, putting poc and women and woc into positions of high authority without so much as batting an eyelid, having so many varied human cultures rather than just generic medieval europe inspired mash…) that it grates when failures like this happen.

To reiterate, once again:

If Anet wants to make skimpy armours, of whatever weight class, for female characters, that is their prerogative. What I am requesting is that

1) where a female set is skimpy/fanservicey, the male version of that set is equally so
(particularly where a female set offers boob windows and thigh windows and midriff windows for typically melee characters – warriors and guardians – while male sets give full body protection)

2) there are more options (particularly in light armour) for players who wish to have their toons not showing so much skin (again, particularly in regard to female characters; the only humanoid male light armour set that lets me show a bit of thigh is the Tactical set, yet I have a much wider choice for humanoid female sets which show off skin of the legs)

Solution to fix the population imbalance

in WvW

Posted by: applecup.3047

applecup.3047

My problem with the alliance thing is that it boils down to turning wvw into alliance v alliance – megaguild v megaguild. To an extent that is how wvw rolls at the moment, at least in high tier servers, but it also has the effect of shutting out roamers, newbies, small and/or unconventional guilds, etc. As someone who’s been on the recieving end of guild drama, I’m also not keen on the idea of such a huge part of the game potentially being dictated by the whims of guild and megaguild politics – a difference of opinion between a couple of people that ultimately resulted in an alliance kick could result in tens of people suddenly unable to play a core part of the game through no fault of their own.

Ever since megaservers though, other than the EU/NA split there is no connection whatsoever between your ‘home world’ and pve, the only thing it matters for any more is wvw anyway. Not that PvE events and communities don’t still happen, but they happen around large pve-focused guilds – which is great for pve players, don’t get me wrong. For wvw though, it makes it all the harder to recruit from your server’s pve population, as such a thing no longer truly exists, and the average pve player probably doesn’t know or care about the tiny bonuses they gain from their world’s wvw score.

Rather than turning wvw into megaguild v megaguild I would rather see a rethinking of how world association works. my badly thought out proposal follows:

require a player to select a wvw “home world” before they can enter wvw (even edge, as it affects if they are red/blue/green). have a hard cap on how many people can be associated with a wvw world at any one time. require a player to sign into wvw at least once a week (or every three days, or some other cadence) to remain associated with their world; after that time passes without a login, they lose their association with that world and must reapply to join that world.

maybe have a queue system so that people who want to join a popular world can still have a chance without having to hammer “select $bestservereu” 24/7. you can join a low pop world so you can still wvw while waiting but once your queue pops you’re shifted to whatever world you chose. same rules still apply – fail to login for the set amount of time and you lose your spot.

for implementation, people would initially be associated with whatever world they are currently playing on, but what you would see is that after the first ‘week’ (or whatever cadence) passes, pure pve and pvp players who do not enter wvw would lose their world association and the population levels would start to stabilise. Removing the bank/tp/crafting stations from the WvW citadels would also help, as much as it would be a pain for pve players it would also mean a lack of people jumping into wvw just to craft, which would mean that people entering wvw would be a true reflection of people who are /playing/ wvw.

for setting the population cap, obviously anet would need to look at all the metrics and set a reasonable cap on the numbers per wvw world. it’s likely that this number would have to be lower than the current wvw population of high/gold tier servers simply because population imbalance is what we are trying to fix. my proposal for this would be for gold tier servers to only be able to /lose/ people until they are below the cap.

example:

server a has 250 players
server b has 100 players
server c has 50 players

the pop cap is set to 150 players

server a is 150 players above the cap before the limit is set, so while it is losing population due to people losing the association via the login limits, new people cannot join.

servers b and c however have 50 and 100 free slots respectively, so new players looking to join wvw and/or former server a players who need a new home can pick one of those.

player d wants to join server a, but cannot because of the cap. player d thus joins a queue to join server a, which cannot happen until server a has 149 players. in the mean time, player d is able to join server b or c if there is an available spot (and indeed may end up change their mind about joining server a in the mean time).

this would not prevent people from joining high pop servers/worlds if they want to, but also encourages people to join lower pop servers. it also does not shut out roamers, newbies, and guilds who do not want to deal with large alliances.

There is significantly MORE heavy armor that is NOT skimpy then skimpy for females – so I hate to break it to you but arguing that there is an imbalance is arguing for more skimpy heavy armor to be made available- which I am not against There is plenty of realistic heavy, covering armor in the game – just because you may not prefer those designs doesn’t mean there is an imbalance.

I am not arguing for more skimpy heavy armour. I have no idea where you got that idea, and frankly the fact that Anet have not gone down the oh so predictable “chainmail bikini” route is one of the reasons I love this game.

Of course, the recently released Phalanx set really made me “urgh” when I saw the female Heavy skin; bare upper breasts and thighs again for female toons, a fully covering set for males. Either have the men similarly unprotected, or don’t create sets which could pass as a “sexy warrior hallowe’en costume”.

A plea from a Welsh speaker, re the Sylvari

in Audio

Posted by: applecup.3047

applecup.3047

I just want to get out of the way that I love Guild Wars 2, and while there are flaws it is still a wonderful game.

However.

I am Welsh, and a Welsh speaker, and interacting with the Sylvari in any way is at times painful. While I admire the work that must have gone into the game, there are plenty of instances where it feels like while some effort has been made to give the Sylvari a celtic flavour, not quite enough research was done – names and words are mispronounced, misspelt, and misused, which for those of us who understand the language puts a damper on the experience.

A few examples of what I mean:

  • “Caer” (castle/fortress) is not and never has been pronounced to rhyme with the English word “care” – “Kyre” (to rhyme with ‘tyre’) is much closer
  • “Hywel” is not and never has been pronounced “High-well” – ‘huh-well’ is much closer
  • Trehearne’s office (Caer Aval – in Welsh spelling this would be Caer Afal) translates to “Apple Castle”, which I think you will agree makes no kittening sense.
  • The Sylvari armoursmithing teacher in the Grove is a female Sylvari named “Gweithwyr” – which means “(male) worker” – a rather degrading name, not to mention misgendered! “Workers (plural)” – which makes even less sense than misgendering her (I double checked after posting, apologies for that error)

These are just the examples which have stuck out to me the most, recently, though I am certain there are plenty of others

Please, Arenanet, I am begging you, bring on board – even on just a consultancy basis – someone who actually speaks Welsh (and where relevant, Irish Gaelic), both while creating these areas and doing the voice acting recordings. These are actual languages which are actually spoken by actual people, and seeing these stupid mistakes made over and over again really throws me personally out of the experience. I know that Welsh and Irish Gaelic speakers are a minority on a global scale, but getting these details right would make for a much better experience.

Killing mobs that re-spawn is exploiting? I guess 99.9% of the player base should prepare for disciplinary action.

In all seriousness I think this is both a petty and pathetic route to take. I’m sure someone will regail me with stories of sitting there for hours and killing mobs for actual decent rewards. What a terrible exploit. Recieveing rewards other than Porus Bones for killing monsters.

It’s in an instance. There is zero competition, and there is no one to see you doing it (for bots). That is clearly a big problem.

I’d like to see bots that can bypass the frostbite debuff or are programmed well enough to do the fractal up to that point. We’re not talking about 10 bots tapping out skelk in less than a second.

All you’d need to do is have players reset fractals level 1 constantly until they get the ice fractal, get to that point in it, and then activate their botting magic (I have no idea how bots actually work, sorry :P). Then they can just keep at it, barring dcs.
