okay. wouldn’t make for a very entertaining movie though i digress.
this was my (pre) nerf video i made back when the game was first released of a s/p pistol whip centric build if you want to watch to see:
you hit once with the pistol for an extremely low amount of damage if i recall. it’s been some time since i was s/p, but if i remember right, the pistol itself hits for like 300 dmg or something with the initial hit, but i doubt you’d get anything (if at all) from the trait.
not all the people i kill in the video had “green arrow”
the fight towards the end is a 2v1 necro and a thief, and a guardian adds in at the end making it a 3v1, none with green arrows.
the thief towards the end who is d/d i also (for the most part) 1v1 completely with no interference until he was downed. he didn’t have a green arrow either.
i can stop posting content if it is not wanted. no probs and thanks for the feedback
all you need to do is look and see what his mainhand is doing.
look at the combat log. if it’s backstab, its dagger main hand.
if its unload, it’s pistol mainhand.
if you’re getting dazed a lot, its sword mainhand.
without a doubt, he was using dagger offhand.

backstab 1bomb thieves are my counter to my mobility spec.
if i miss the dodge on a mug, im dead. flat and simple.

even without the warrior hitting haste, that’d be a 5k cnd with a 17k backstab.
not many classes have over 22k health, even with amulets outside of berserkers (like knights for example).
So exactly how much damage can a burst thief do against high toughness characters?

i don’t think i’ve ever seen over 5k on a mug. you got fondled pretty hard there :p
so shadow phage, would you say a player specced 20 in their health tree, with 20 in their toughness tree, wearing a knight’s amulet (500power 500precision 700vitality), deserves to get 1 rounded by a mug cnd backstab chain in under 1 second?
go try it on a golem ZLE.
i already swapped builds. my current build is roughly 16-17k on light golems. 14-15 on medium. and i’ve hit as high as 12 on heavy.
i haven’t eaten anything this high, but i have eaten 16 to 17k backstab hits.
that combined with mug and cnd = i’m dead, even with knight’s amulet on.
so what’s the freaking point in me going knight’s amulet in the first place with a swordpistol or shortbow build?
none. if i get hit by the mug, im dead.
it’s a stupid mechanic, and needs to be reworked.
edit: i meant knight’s, not soldier’s amulet.

Hey guys. Just a quick question for you. I’m currently a thief main since launch and I’m experiencing the instantaneous, 100-0 death that thieves can cause in PVP. Against squishies (other thieves, mesmers, ele’s with no defenses up, glass cannon warriors) there is literally nothing they can do, as the sequence happens in less than one second.
I gotta say that, while it’s fun instagibbing people for a few hours, I don’t personally find it conducive to a real “PVP” environment. It’s more like “P-v-theirhealthbar,” because there is absolutely no way the human mind can react in under one second with latency involved.
I fear without a change, these 100-0 in 1 second builds will dominate PVP until there are nothing left but thieves and maybe the occasional Guardian.

it’s not even steal they can use to reach you either. it can easily be shadowstep (which is 1200 range), or the infiltrator’s signet (which is 900 range as well).

nice 1 asum. nice 1 indeed since thats the range of the majority of classes in the game.
believe it or not but mesmers are running into the same issue with staff not being power based, yet its their best weapon set.
what sucks is that you go sword pistol or sword sword, and all of your dmg is based upon power, then you HAVE to go greatsword in order to benefit from your build. a lot of the mesmer community hates that their only option for a power based build is to go with a greatsword rather than utilizing their best weapon.
on the flip side, you can try to go a condition based build with staff and then scepter or something, but the vast majority of the community of mesmers despises scepter, simply because the autoattack kills their phantasms.
it’s not just in the thief realm where weapon combos or attacks don’t make a lot of sense, so i get your picture, but its’ broader than just with the thief class.
sword/dagger works fine so long as you dont use the dual skill.
you can keep people locked down surprisingly well with proper use of venoms, cloak n dagger, plus 1 ability from stealth with sword for the daze.

i made a short video of some fights from yesterday (9/27/12) with a build i’ve been working on for a couple of days now. these are all just random structured fights, with me just being solo in it without any friends or anything.
it’s focus is on pistol whip and shortbow. i’m still practicing it because i really like its mechanics and it’s playstyle, but here is a video with the spec included at the end for anyone interested:
