i go with damage (zerk)
if i learned something about thief gameplay, it is positioning.

learning to accept that the limitation of full damage builds.
engage to attack, position to enemy counters, disengage more often. that’s why basic thief have high damage output simply because we lost damage during disengaging and repositioning.

my 2 cents.

Quite useful actually. Scrapper’s Shocking speed -> Rapid regen -> Final salvo are synch. usually strips off resistance of mobs. I only use blast as opener then rocket charge -> electro whirl. if mob is standing, switching to bomb for blind, burn and chill. when i open with mortar kit for poison and chill (1/2), then rocket charge, the blast gyro will follow up with lightning field for daze. taking advantage of what an engineer is best at, setting up blast fields.

PS. I am yet to master activating 3 leap fields when using the rocket charge

i’m looking for how others are using this

i use this for leveling

the crucial traits are only 2 adepts, 10 firearms for hair trigger and 10 tools for speedy gadgets

dual pistol
on land, FT ,throw mines and rocket boots
on water, grenade, personal batting ram. third is optional as grenade is powerful underwater.

healing could be any but i find elix H to be most useful

the key playstyle requires a lot of dodging and mashing toolbet skills

start with earth for cripple (earth 2 and/or 4) where they stand
watch their movement and cover the next with water 4
the fire 4 will surely hit them for more than 1 on the their zone

this combo hurts a lot (and lots of enemies) in wvw

How do you kill a thief?

Thief’s are OP. How can I kill one 1v1? I ALWAYS lose games that have thiefs in it. They just burst me and i cant even react. Even if I get the jump on them, they never die in my burst and im full zerker, thus they go invis on 10-20% health and come out of invis and kill me in one second.

What combos do you need to do/watch out for/ what weapons/build. I need help im pulling my hair out every time i see a thief.

what’s the build and gears? forget it if you are zerkers. you can never beat their burst on zerker to zerker battle.

Ele’s matchup against Thief at the moment is pretty much in the Thief’s favor, 100%. It’s one of the primary things that keeps them out of being competitive in sPvP. I honestly think it’ll take a patch for things to change around, sad as that is.

Pretty much this. You can beat Thieves on an Ele, but it’s tough. Don’t go full zerker, they’ll one-shot you. A Knights/Valkyrie’s mix can work well. The trick to beating Thieves is pinning them down and ripping them apart, not just out-bursting them. They’re rightfully the kings of burst, so don’t try to beat them at their own game. Make the game yours. Hit them with a Scepter 2 and 3 when they pop out to kill part of their burst them switch to Earth for protection and hit 4. Then Fire for a Pheonix and Fire Grab (Flash to them if you need to), then back to Air where maybe you hit them with a RTL+Updraft combo.

The key is to land your CC, then carpet bomb the area if they use Shadow Refuge. Don’t blow everything on a thief who hasn’t been forced to use all his emergency escape options.

It won’t work against any above average thief. Any D/D – D/P will just laugh the moment he sees a S/D Ele.

try all at least it’s not just bursting. map awareness is crucial as well. and you’re above average thief is rare

this is our server even if those we mentioned as bandwagoners left.

we might not shine where it was. at least we could play wherever we want, whenever we want. i just remember queueing on a first day for EBG only to be told our guild is to just to defend the BL. we lost. who cares? we win. who cares?

just enjoying what is in.

d/d is fun but i prefer mid to long range. it might be stronger well the advantage of melee. but we could use a powerful or better s/d to compete d/d’s mobility and defensive capabilities. anyway, it might be too much with considering mobility as defensive skill also.

About Runes & Pets

for me, my pet and my toon is one even if i am to die (in game)
if my pet dies (well most of the time I only lost one), my dps is cut short by around 30% (based on feeling/experience though, no numbers there)

does it matter to me if my pet gets boosted by runes? not really. i treat them as a dispensable utility like the sigils when activated. the challenge is how would i keep them alive long enough to dish sizable damage (or distraction). that’s why there is the F3 button up there.

there are lots of battle (or qq’s) about ranger-pet mechanics but when you get used on the rotation, pets are invaluable damage source, affected by rune or not. damage is still damage and that sinks in your dps.

btw, i love felines. they fall right in the place of my rotations.
