Why do Charrs have horns?

in Charr

caelstraz.6298

“Animals have a variety of uses for horns and antlers, including defending themselves from predators and fighting members of their own species for territory, dominance or mating priority. Horns are usually present only in males but in some species, females too may possess horns. It has been theorized by researchers that taller species living in the open are more visible from longer distances and more likely to benefit from horns to defend themselves against predators. Female bovids that are not hidden from predators due to their large size or open Savannah like habitat are more likely to bear horns than small or camouflaged species.6
In addition, horns may be used to root in the soil or strip bark from trees. In animal courtship many use horns in displays. For example, the male blue wildebeest reams the bark and branches of trees to impress the female and lure her into his territory. Some animals with true horns use them for cooling. The blood vessels in the bony core allow the horns to function as a radiator.”

There’s actually plenty of functional reasons for horns! While Charr are not “prey” in the typical sense, everything from harpies to hyenas could be considered a potential predator. I like the horns because they draw away from the cat theme. Instead of just being cats on their hind legs, they come across more as a species all of their own.

does anyone know if the horns will ever get fixed so we can scale them? I love the design, but I’d really like to make them smaller and adjust the ears!

They may be intentionally unscalable, who knows…I’d like to make them bigger myself! :p

And because the human characters in any game where there’s other playable races are always horribly generic.

HUMANS ARE GENERIC!?

Excuse me, I’ll have you know that the human race in Tyria is a well diverse multi cultural bunch compared to you oafish brutes and your military regime.

I don’t care how detailed and diverse humans are, they’re still human and thus come across as boring in fantasy MMOs to me. Humans exist. That alone makes them fairly generic to me. Just like elves and dwarves and all the other races we’ve seen a million times in fantasy settings. Borrrrrring. If you enjoy them, more power to you. I’ll admit they’re more compelling than humans in many other games but they’re still…human. Blech.

Few people play female Charr

I made a Charr female thief and I absolutely adore her My only problem is that male and famale gear look the same (same as with asuras). I still want my Charr to have a bit of the feminine look :P

I actually thought male and female looked the same since so many of female faces looks kinda male. Then I checked male Charr settings and saw the difference was quite huge.

Well there’s a lore explanation for that – in Charr culture there is no differentiation between male and female armor, intentionally so. They (excluding Flame Legion of course) view men and women as equals – in combat and otherwise – so clothing and armor is based on functionality, not femininity.

Socially acceptable…kind of? My guess would be it would be the equivalent of giving two children in the family the same name. You could…but there’s no good reason to and it would probably be considered a little odd. I’ve certainly never seen it happen in-game.

Ooh, that looks like quite a decent medium armor set on Charr, may I know what it is? Would love it for my thief in the future.

He’s sporting T1 Cultural “Drover’s” with Fractals weapons. I could guess at the dyes, but I’m sure if you ask him in a PM, he’ll tell you.

As I already have, yeah, he told me.

Not to stray from the topic though (I intended to comment myself, but then I saw the pic and actually forgot about the original reason I’m here x)), I see more female Charr lately than before. Males still outnumber them, but females are considerably less rare, atleast from what I’m seeing. I’m thinking Rox’s horns being available has something to do with it :x

I was eyeing the dyes too, they’re gorgeous! Mind forwarding it to me so we’re not flooding him with pms?

To me Charr should look fierce and imposing, the teeth and horns on female Char just don’t look right to me.

It depends on how you design a female charr. The most popular kind among players is the cutesy, skinny kind. I think people like to try and make them look like their pet cats. But there is a ton of variety among the females, and they can also be made to look bulky, fierce, and imposing. Give the character creation a run-through and see for yourself :P

^^^

My lady charr has been confused for a male several times by some of my non-charr playing guildmates, she has a fairly masculine build and face, plus heavy armor…the ladies are plenty fierce and imposing if you make ’em right!

Charr Plush Backpack

in Charr

Posted by: caelstraz.6298

caelstraz.6298

Actually, I was wondering about this. I, as a consumer and as a non-game persona is going “Aww, cute and adorable!”.

However, I think about these things way too much….

Plushies, or Stuffed Animals, as we have called them, all arrive from various places, but if we take the basis to be from taxidermy, it makes a Plush is a representative of a dead creature. We give them to children to help give them comfort and to protect them from imaginary fears, but they still represent a dead thing.

It’s like running around with a dead Charr on your back, and you are trying to make yourself friendly to Charr. Even worse, what if you are Charr wearing this backpack? What the heck does this say about your character? Does that make your character childish? A murderer?

Furthermore, does wearing a plump image of a Charr mean you are ridiculing one of the most powerful races in the world? Would Charr take this as a sign that they rule over all other races? What does this mean?

I just find the ramifications of this, in character, to be interesting and terrifying.

OOC, though, it’s cute.

The basis for plushies, historically speaking, has nothing to do with taxidermy though. So this whole comparison is inaccurate. Taxidermy was done for show to create trophies for hunters. Toys for children have been made almost as long as humans have been around, using bits of cloth and straw. Dolls have been around far longer and they have nothing to do with representing dead humans. They were just to comfort and entertain children. Plushies evolved from that – like the teddy bear. It was just another form to give to toys for children to enjoy. (example, think about how different the teddy bear, even the first ones, look from an actual bear)

Do you know the history of the Stieff company? A seamstress made an elephant-shaped pincushion as a gift for a friend and kids loved it. Most plush companies have backstories along those lines

From a Charr’s perspective – I don’t think there’s anything wrong with wearing it around a city, or having it at home. It’s a toy, it’s fun, whatever. It might appear childish to some the same way adults with plush backpacks are sometimes considered childish, but I don’t think it would be THAT big of a deal. Now if you tried to wear it into battle…that would be a different story.

Other races wearing it? Well in my headcanon – since there is no backstory to the origin of these plushies as far as I know – Charr started making these for cubs for children to start playing with. Other races liked them and boom! A company and fashion trend was born. As far as the charr are concerned, it’s about as insulting as dolls are to humans. It may be reminiscent of them, but it’s not exactly representative.

long time between replies but you’re still clearly missing the boat, but uh, whatever helps you sleep at night…I also love people who say “stop arguing with me” as though it doesn’t take two to tango and they have NO CHOICE but to respond even when they want the conversation to be over! What a terrible situation!

All that kitten aside…

I HATE cats. That’s out of the way. No kitty cat cute fluffy BS for me

Charr are fighters, survivors, inventors. It fits my inner “warrior”. They know what’s out to get them and they know how to counter it, be it by means of force, machinery or deception. The quotes too… “We rip each day from life’s teeth”. Effin’ genius.

Also I think they are the most down to earth, beer and meat&potatoes race. I love their humor and attitude. I can’t stand the kitteny Norn and the condescending Asura… Humans are just plain lame at times – anyone who’s had to put up with Lord Faren would probably agree. Sylvari… they appeal to my philosophical side but they take s**t too seriously sometimes.

While Charr Engie is my alt I find myself playing the storyline with a lot more enthusiasm than that of my Sylvari Necro. I just love the concept of Charr, ’nuff said.

yessss thisthisthis. My main problem with the rest of the races, aesthetics aside, is they feel kinda…flat. Sylvari would probably be my second favourite. But the other three just aren’t fleshed out enough to me – or, perhaps, just not in a way that really resonates with me.

edit: I absolutely love that you say “no kitty cat cute fluffy bs for me” yet the anet censor changes your name to “Kitten”…bahaha!!!

There’s a random one in the black citadel where one Charr is asking why they have humans in the city and the other says something about how it’s a sign of victory for their former enemy to now be buying their stuff. I haven’t heard it again since, I’ll have to see if I can find the exact quote. It’s a great allusion to real-life war.

If it doesn’t seem realistic try talking with a mouthful of fangs and a tongue that’s probably more feline than human and see how clear your voice sounds :p

That’s what bothers me about it in the first place. I mean think of the stuff that’s happened to your voice before… I’ve had it affected by all sorts of things: wisdom teeth cut out, talking through mouth guards, bit tongue, accidentally blew hole in tongue (it hurt, don’t eat explosives), drunken slurring, rasping out ‘I can’t breathe’… but as weird as you can make yourself sound, how often do you feel someone is following you around playing a recorded gurgling sound randomly while you speak? :P

I dunno man, I work at a haunt and I’ve made some pretty weird sounds trying to talk through a pair of dental distortions or scarecrow sabers

Why did you roll a Charr?

in Charr

Posted by: caelstraz.6298

caelstraz.6298

I’ll quote you since you seem to be confused…

Didn’t feel like rolling a human female since I have no desire to obtain dyes or gather the most appealing armor, as I’m guessing other girl players do. I usually run the beast type races like the Covenant, Zerg and what not. Charr fit for me and love the fluffy tails and fur customization!

Intent is irrelevant…your intent does not remove the sexism from your original post…which has a direct implication of sexism regardless of what you intended. No one is “upset”, I was just pointing out that the poster who called your post sexist was correct…that’s all. But if you want to continue missing the boat that’s your choice I suppose? I still don’t understand why this is such a difficult concept.

ps: You may want to work on your analogies as many ads are sexist as well…oh and your reading comprehension because no one said women shouldn’t enjoy customization or that customization is inherently negative.

Take it or leave it. You’re the one who seems to be getting upset by this conversation.

The only thing I said was that females enjoy making females because they like customization, coloring, clothing design and attempting to represent their RL selves in game. I fail to see how these completely honest, tried and true, no way negative reasons are sexist.

You’re still stereotyping female gamers when there are many, MANY (including yourself as you so stated) who don’t play just for the sake of obtaining dyes and appealing armour. You, intentionally or not, were reiterating the sexist typical notion found among many gamers that the average woman plays MMOs to have a “pretty” character, unlike the average male gamer. Maybe you should re-read your original post.

Even IF that’s been your personal experience, that’s in no way representative of the general population, and saying so comes across as sexist whether the intent is there or not. I don’t know why this is a difficult concept?

Some women play mmos to make pretty characters. Others don’t give a kitten about customization and play to participate in pvp or pve competetively, want tough, fierce looking characters, pick male characters…conversely, there are plenty of men who play mmos that spend hours figuring out the gear and dye combinations they like the best.

The point here is that women have a myriad of interests and playstyles and play a myriad of different types of characters…just look at how many women can be found on this subforum alone.

"Do you want to see my scab..."

caelstraz.6298

Some kid’s icky, flaky, crusty scab isn’t the same thing as a warrior’s glorious battle wound. I don’t see anything wrong with a young charr cub having this reaction, warrior culture or no. Children are silly – the same cub who was squicked by the other cub’s scab would probably ooh and aah over a soldier’s bloody gash, the same way a human child might gleefully roll around in the mud in their backyard, then later get upset when they spill a little ice cream on their clean clothes.

(Well, childhood experiences may vary, but that describes my young self pretty accurately.)

The way I see it, the “wanna see my scab?” comment isn’t that different from saying “wanna see my wart?” Gross. No thank you sir.

Did you grow up in Yugoslavia or something? O__o

I believe they were referring to the mud/ice cream comparison

I definitely agree with the OP though. The scab thing makes sense to me. I’m less fond of the “I’m too pretty to die!” line though – after all, kids pick stuff like that up from somewhere, so unless they’ve been spending a lot of time in Lion’s Arch (which isn’t impossible, there’s definitely cubs there) it’s unlikely she would have picked it up from other Charr. I wouldn’t say it’s totally ooc though.

The Albino Charr Phenomenon

It kinda makes sense to me that white would be popular – especially plain white/white tiger/white leopard. It’s still realistic, after all those colour/pattern combinations are found in nature, while still being more unusual than your regular lion/tiger/panther colourings. It’s also flashy, goes well with armour…etc etc.

My first Charr was black with bright golden/orange spots, second was chocolate brown with pale yellow stripes. Strange colour combos are so fun! I did end up with a white charr with grey leopard spots eventually just to keep things interesting…white Charr just look nice

The ones that entertain me the most, honestly, are the ones that are coloured like house cats. I made a chocolate-point Siamese once and ran into a calico Charr. Hilariously adorable!

(Hey, now, let’s not stereotype our fellow girl players here, Ropihl! Internalized sexism still counts. :/ )

I love lore in general, and I love charr because I wanted to know more about them in GW1. They’ve done so much for themselves since then, and they’re determined to hang on to what they have, and SO stubborn they just might manage to do it. XD (Seriously, who takes over land haunted by respawning ghosts and says “don’t care, ours anyway”? The charr, that’s who.)

Late reply is late. Sexism wasn’t intended, just guesstimating the reason why other women choose to create human female characters. Gear customization are a fine thing to follow, I would just rather do so on a charr. That’s all. Comment wasn’t even that bad really :P

It may not be “that bad”, but it’s still sexist :p Personally, I wouldn’t be surprised if the proportion of women who play humans and the proportion of men who play human are roughly even.

All the furries on here are amusing me…yay stereotype perpetuation

As for why I play Charr – they speak to me on so many levels. Their culture, their atheism, their values, their history, their competitive spirit…don’t forget a nice heaping dose of feminism! The part of a Blood Legion Charr’s personal story where you meet Elexus Shredskin had me dying of laughter. After that there was definitely no looking back. It definitely also helps that their running and fighting animations are awesome, fur colours are much more fun to play with than skin tones, and tails. I love tails.

10/10 on both, I like when people embrace the cultural names and can come up with their own original names.

My Charr warrior is named Snarl Trenchteeth. …don’t exactly have a good reason for the last name except I see a warrior as the man/beast in the trenches doing the dirty work and that Charr have a fearsome smile.

Not bad but…two references to the mouth in one name (snarl and teeth) is a little repetitive for me. 7/10. Kitten English major ruins everything, amirite?

I have a lot of charr…and I’ll probably end up making more at some point. What can I say, I like what I like.

Cael Deathrend, lady warrior and champion of the Blood Legion. As long as you respect her, you don’t have to worry about being gutted. Hopefully.
Valkar Spitefang, necromancer. That pretty much sums it up.
Lionguard Krizak, guardian. Decided to leave his warband after promoting a new legionnaire and follow a higher calling. Still holds ties to the Iron Legion but spends most of his time protecting civilian settlements.
Kyessa Flintstrike, engineer. She learned how to use fire for her inventions early on in the fahrar and now puts her abilities to good use for the Iron Legion.
Seva the Beguiling, thief. As the name suggests she’s as charming and witty as she is manipulative. Don’t let the pretty face of this Siamese-coloured Charr fool you.
Marren Glitterpelt, mesmer. Because let’s face it, there’s no real way to take a Charr shooting purple butterflies seriously. That never gets Marren down though!
