Let me get to the point. This game has never been about vertical progression. As someone who LOVES classic, vanilla GW2 and does not like HoT or anything new, would I have success finding groups and being able to get good gear by just doing the vanilla content?
Thanks!

My son and I quit at the same time. I think the difficulty in HoT and how it was so tedious is what did us in. It was not “fun”…
But isnt GW2 progrrssion horizontal? Meaning the volcanic area is just a new max level area, so I can now skip the HoT area?

I have not played Guild Wars 2 since the first week that Heart of Thorns was released. This is the first time that I can remember, than an expansion turned me off so badly, that it made me lose all interest in the game itself.
I do not know if it was the flying, or the vertical zones, or whatever but boy it was a nightmare.
Did anyone else have this experience, and if so, are you looking forward to the volcanic patch coming up? Maybe they will get back to what made GW2 great.
Fine its jarring for Elite specs. So lets talk about why not all weapons are available then. That I really dont get.
Sell new players? I am sorry but if they are doing the trial that means they BOUGHT THE GAME. Whats to sell??? lol
Isn’t the free 80 “trial” kind of pointless unless you can test out the elite specialization, let alone have ALL weapons available by that class to test?
It just makes no sense to me.
I wanted to test out my Necromancer. I want to test him with a greatsword. I can’t. I want to test him with an axe, my favorite Necro weapon. I can’t (unless I buy one)
So my Thief, I wanted to try Daredevil, I can’t. Fine. Hey lets see what dual pistols damage looks like at 80. I can’t (unless I buy them).
What happened here? Whats the thought process behind this?
Will I fall behind gear wise if I dont play HoT maps? Skills wise too?
I dont want to be forced to do HoT to prep for the next expansion, that would be a big deal.
I am sorry I just cant stand any of the HoT content. I don’t like how vertical it is. There is no real long view distance and open, beautiful zones. I also feel that mobs just take too long to kill. I think Rift had this same issue with their first expansion. There is this clock in players heads. I really feel there is. And if that clock strikes zero and you are still fighting that mob, it just feels….off.
However, I love the original world a lot. Love all the zones and love leveling characters. Right now I have a couple 80’s and 6 characters under level 50. I also love the Revenant class and some of the specialty classes.
So my question is, if I really dislike HoT, is there even a reason to level my characters? Maybe get them to 80 and wait for the next expansion? If you were me, what would you do?
I am pretty happy with GW2 these days. The only issue I have with ArenaNet is the hideous new UI; I have no clue and get lost with that skill “wheel” and talents, ,etc.
I also hate the fact that Warriors got a …..torch…..I mean, you name them Berserker and dont create a new weapon, the 2 handed axe!
With me having 9 slots going on 10 there is virtually no reason to delete anyone.
And I have like 1700 gems right now and can easily buy more. Sounds like I have zero reason to delete anyone. They can just stay off the main screen to the right…lol
How many character slots can you have? I have 9. How much are they each?
Yeah this is what I am thinking of doing. I know its drastic, because I will lose my only two level 80’s:
Human 80 Guardian
Human 80 Engineer
Norn 33 Warrior
to:
Norn 20 Guardian
Human 20 Warrior
Charr 20 Engineer
I just love the idea of a huge Norn Guardian and a Charr Engineer for some reason.
I am thinking of deleting my 80 Human Engineer and creating a Charr Engineer, grabbing a Flamethrower and Charrzooka, and soaking up how appropriate this race/class combo is.
has anyone else done something similar along these lines?
How can you overuse?
Any plans on lowering the target? It looks a bit high. Maybe give us some horizontal and vertical options like in Elder Scrolls Online?
Thanks!
Wow, just came back. This has to be the most confusing UI I have ever seen. What was so wrong with the old way Traits and Skills were done? Both me and my son are sitting there, looking at the screen in complete disbelief.
I know some of you may like it. But there has to be more people like me who just dont get it. And the circular wheel for picking an ability? What? Where does the wheel start? It just makes no sense.
And you know what? Its not the casting time, its the animation.
If it charged up and had to light up with holy power and then swung down, thats fine.
Its the animation, its painful to watch.
I just had a moderately annoying experience. After finishing a dungeon run with a PUG with relative ease, I asked if they wanted to do the next easy path in the dungeon, to which they replied “Kitten you” and immediately kicked me from the party. My guildie, who was running the dungeon with me, laughed when I said I had reported them for verbal abuse. I realize that they were probably joking but it’s so hard to tell via text alone.
Was I being melodramatic? Why do we put up with people like this? To tie this back to the title, I understand that almost a month ago, guild wars 2 went f2p or “free to try” or whatever. Could this be adversly affecting the amazing community (overall) that we have here?
Sorry I dont buy this story. It is either made up or you asked rudely.
No one answers like that when someone asks a simple question. Never seen it done to anyone, ever.
While we have a new expansion coming, now would be a perfect time to fix the auto-attack for Guardian when using a hammer. The third move within the autoattack which i swear has this extra half-second that…is…clumsy and awkward at best. I would be happy if it did a little less damage and didn’t……….pause…….in mid air for so long.
So what say you, devs?

So if I want, I can weapon swap between Longbow and Hammer?

I did the beta but forgot to check. Are elite specializations basically just another weapon toggle? Meaning as a Guardian, I could switch between Longbow and Hammer seamlessly?
ArenaNet Overthinking it with these Names

Dwayna forbid Anet for trying to do something different and come up with their own names.
Coming up with their own names is fine. They have done good in the past with Dervish, etc. But these names are not only bad, they dont make sense, and sound stupid.

I swear ArenaNet stop overthinking it with these names.
I am an MMO vet since Ultima Online and I have to say these have to be the worst names I have ever seen for classes. These take the cake. How hard would it have been to give the Guardian a cool name like Crusader? Or the Thief a Monk name?
Daredevil makes everyone think of “Evel” Knievel.
Its not too late. Come on.
And now “Forge” for engineers? What? A forge is an object. Brutal…

I always thought that Axes were underpowered but with the right spec they seem better now since the patch.
Is an Axe build possible for descent DPS now? What build are you guys using, if so?
Thanks!
The Norn Liam Neeson is the most obvious Ive ever seen.
I think a lot of us are really excited about this. Thanks to ANet for this idea. Don’t ever underestimate how important it is for specializations. 90% of Rift’s success IMO was that you had all these class combinations. Same with Guild Wars. I think people really love the idea of having your class become slightly something else. With that, I have a few questions/requests:
1. Does the whole class name change? I mean like on our character screen? Because if I change from a Ranger to a Druid, I want to be known everywhere in the interface as a level 80 Druid named XXX, not a Ranger. This also means changing the class “icon”.
2. When are more specializations going to be revealed? I think a smart idea would be to one per week counting up to release, to give us something to look forward to.
3. A personal request, I would love to see a possible Crusader Guardian class that can use a Longbow.
4. Are there possible plans for an expansion after this one? I would hope you would strongly consider adding a new race like Dwarves or adding an updated Guild Wars 2 HD version of Cantha with many zones. Don’t let Mists of Pandaria sway you. That was silly. A deeply rooted and serious take could be epic (think Jade Empire-like)
That is all for now. I love the job you are doing on the game. Also very nice on no more levels! Finally someone understands.
I think I meant axes.
I like some of your advice. I mean, if they reveal a “Crusader” (Longbow) offshoot of Guardian, you can be dammed sure I want him to be human.
And If they added a “Berserker” offshoot of Warrior, well, thats a Norn for sure.
Regarding the armor, I want my Norn to either have a lot of fur or show some skin. More tribal, and that fits better with a Warrior.
More things point to the way I have them now, but I cant get a Norn Guardian out of my mind.
Long time player, have a couple 80’s.
I have this issue since 2012 where I want to play two classes, Warrior and Guardian, with two races, Norn and Human, but can never figure out which combo works best for me.
I have leveled each of these 2 combinations several times and deleted the characters. I have had a Norn Warrior at level 28, 35 and 54, a Norn Guardian at level 33 and 53. Got a Human Warrior to level 34, 40, and 29. And a Human Guardian to level 27, 40, and 43.
Right now I have:
Human Guardian lvl 26
Norn Warrior lvl 25
My issues? Well lots, on both sides
1. I like classes that fit with with the lore better.
2. It would feel weird playing a Norn who cant use axes. (Guardian)
3. A Human Warrior would be boring because I already have rifle and bow humans.
4. There is something about a Norn Guardian that like and cant out my mind on it.
5. I have played the typical paladin human for years.
6. With a Norn warrior I feel like a real Norn hunter, and can use a rifle and bow
I need to make a decision because this has been going on since 2012. I am fresh out of lvl 20 scrolls now. I will take the advice of fellow forum strangers because I obviously cant make any decisions.
Please help me!
Thanks

Just curious, would love to see it back to its former glory.
Fix the game. NO ONE creating a new Norn character can get past the starting area. This is bullkitten.
Having played just about every MMO and RPG out there, this frail, aging 44 year old gamer still finds that to this day, there are only two online games that he has given his most time to, World of Warcraft and Guild Wars 2.
This post is not about World of Warcraft. That is for another time.
I want to talk about Guild Wars 2. More importantly, on how I constantly see crowded in game cities and how it appears in the top 10 most played pc games from sites ranging from Xfire to Raptr, and yet it is also the most consistently frowned upon MMO in most online forums. This is a game that was the next step up. If World of Warcraft borrowed the Everquest model and made its game more polished, then Guild Wars 2 took all the little irritating things about all MMOs and eliminated them completely.
This is a game were you “see” what is going on right in front of you, and react. You are never told by NPCs to go kill x amount of spiders, and questing can involve many different ways to complete an area. Small events pop up and sometimes even collide. Exploration is encouraged and completing a zone map actually leads to a reward.
You can deposit material items to your bank from anywhere in the game, you craft straight from your bank, can read email from anywhere. There is shared looting so if someone tags a mob before you, as long as you hit, you get credit. Everyone can mine the same ore so you don’t get upset at other players. Anyone can resurrect anyone else which has created a sub culture of some very nice, helpful players. The game runs great, has a nice interface, beautiful graphics, gorgeous music, AND it is buy to play, making it one of the better deals around. There is little or no downtime whatsoever, and it has that special quality of being easy to get into but difficult to master. It has a sense of humor, excellent lore and even jumping puzzles for some of those parkour fans. The starting areas are fantastic and epic, and having outdoor giant monster Shadow Behemoth-like open events in all the starting areas is a real eye-opener. The wardrobe and specifically dye system is one of the best around.
The end game is what we always knew it would be. People complain about the lack of gear progression but that’s what Guild Wars 2 was always going to be. Even though there are some small upgrades, it has never really been about gear at level 80. In fact, to me, it is more about how you look cosmetically at level 80, which is refreshing, to say the least. The lack of a holy trinity has made finding dungeon groups so much easier, as there is no waiting around for a tank or healer, and holds you more accountable for getting out of the way of damage.
While there have been bumps with the living story content only being temporary, future updates are rumored to be more permanent additions, so ArenaNet has listened. Some of the content was quite impressive including the attack on Lion’s Arch and the very popular Super Adventure Box. Updates in general seem to come as fast if not faster than other games that have subscriptions.
My question is, what am I missing here? Is it jealousy? Are a lot of these internet anti-GW2 rants actually shills from other companies? Maybe GW2 is not your cup of tea, I get it. But I get sick and tired of someone randomly saying “GW2 sucks” or it is a flop because it just does not make sense. It does not add up.
I might* be late, but I think I’ve found it! (if anyone is still interested)
Yes I love that piece. Its actually from Guild Wars. I love how GW2 uses some of GW1’s music.
Great advice there and to the point, I like that.
I dont like grenades or bombs so thats done. Don’t care for D/D for Thief so thats done.
But I love Guardian melee and love casters, I think my Guardian and Ele just got promoted!
Been playing Guild Wars 2 off and on since it started. After not being impressed with Elder Scrolls Online I am coming back. Trouble is, not sure who to play with.
To tell you truth this post is about making one of my character my new “main”. I mostly play casual PVE with some end game and some WvWvW
80 Engineer
He is my main but that was only because I love engineers in an MMO which is rare. I have never been happy with flamethrower damage in this game and I hate the Rifle abilities. I am mainly stuck with P/P and that only works if you have that static electricity build and you basically have to unload everything on random mobs in Orr. It just feels like I am using a pea-shooter when I play.
44 Guardian
This guy is definitely in the lead for my new main. This class is very close to the human “paladin” I have always wanted. I just dont care for the range options though and the 2 handed 3rd animation is still painfully slow (yes, I have partial OCD)
52 Warrior
My big guy, my Norn. The class is effective and I even use bow or riffle sometimes and love it. The only issue I have is that the class is sometimes boring to play. I cant put my finger on it.
51 Necromancer
Again, a class I made because I mostly like the “idea” behind playing a Necromancer. Truth is, nothing will ever touch my Ultima Online Necromancer and I have to face that fact. My favorite weapon of this class just so happens to be the least useful, the axe. My luck huh? I wish the range was 900 not 600. Anyways, not sure how useful this class is in PVE end game.
10 Thief
Trying to emulate my Witch Hunter from Warhammer Online with moderate success. I use a sword and pistol build. I usually dont play rogue like classes. I also love bow and dual pistols with this guy.
20 Elementalist
Used a free 20 token on this guy. If I play him he will take the place of my Necromancer as my “human caster”. Is this class fun and effective at end game pve?
(edited by darkwombat.3695)
Please give us more weapon options.
Flails, two handed axes, bow Guardian, etc, etc…
“The invasion is not active in this overflow”
Meanwhile, there are like 20 people at each waypoint, waiting to get into the non overflow verison of the zone that has the event.
It says I cant participate in event because im in the overflow and need to wait.
Been waiting forever.
On some events and servers if you are in the overflow, you cant help with the invasion.
I can’t belive something like a simple map overflow has stopped me this evening from doing an event in an MMO game. This is beyond frustrating.
Light Aromor: Three Classes
Medium Armor: Three Classes
Heavy Armor: Two Classes
Ideas?
Dark Paladin, Dark Templar, Dark Knight, Death Knight, etc?
Well i played Tera for a few hours yesterday (for the first time) I dunno what people are saying its not a bad game, sure Guildwars 2 combats is a little more free, but that’s not always a good thing, i find it a double edged sword, yes you have freedom to move dodge but it also Trivializes the mobs and AI..
I’ve only played it for a short period but from what i’ve seen and liked in Tera over GW2
The classes have roles
The classes have many great skills and viable builds
The races are interesting
The armor and weapons look amazing
Graphics are eye popping beautiful
The story seemed interesting (what i’ve seen)
Combat is fun, and takes skillYes Guildwars 2 is a good game, but its core mechanics and story let it down just as much as “other” games out there, and to say GW2 ruined all other mmo’s is a gross lie..
Tera is good but the questing is the absolute worst. Its like early days of WoW questing. Its 2013 and Tera has a 2003 questing model. Plus I can’t get over how your feet are rooted to the ground during combat. Other than that it is a gorgeous, beautiful game.
Guild Wars 2 took Rift and WoW into a room and basically murdered them for me.
I can’t play an MMO with all these global cooldowns and a zillion buttons to mash.
It’s the great combat.
Tera started it, then GW2 came in and finished the job…
Long Bow for guardians….. no
Hammer for Engineers….. yes
Great Axe…. sure, why not lol.
Then increase staff range for Guardians then.
In some of the promotional material we see a Norn warrior holding what for sure looks like a massive, 2 handed axe. Why isn’t this in the game?
Also can we get a longbow for Guardians and a 2 handed hammer for Engineers?
Thanks!
Dan Mathews strikes again. All he does is post about how this game sucks. I have seen this over and over.
He is obsessed with this game even though he does not play.
Why would you hang around a message board of a game you don’t like? That’s almost WORSE than playing a game you don’t like…lol
I have about 20 screenshots in my Guild Wars 2 screenshot folder. 15 of them are from Orr. Never has a location in an MMO been such a combination of epic, huge, haunting, frightening, and atmospheric. Not since Netherstorm in WoW or Seratos in the Rift expansion have I been this amazed.
Tarnished Coast is a great choice. It is the unofficial RP server, but I have always felt RP servers are more friendly. It has a very good population, and I am on in an excellent guild with 20+ members on daily. We do all sorts of stuff.
I was wondering if anyone had both a Norn Guardian and Warrior? Are you concerned that they are too much alike, both wearing heavy mail?
