I dunno exactly why; I used to love GW2 as one of my most fav. MMos ever. And I played a lot, so I have good basis to compare. But somehow I simply did not feel the magic when I returned. Just a few impressions.
First, all skills of all classes have been so completely reworked, that they are kinda beyond recognition. I have 9 max level chars, one in each class, I spent a lot of time to learn and improve, to have best gear and to know the best rotations in my chars, and here it was as if everything I worked to learn was taken away. I know classes are reworked now and then. I went through a lot of changes in my years in WOW. Or EQ2 or LOTRO. But I can not remember ever returning to a MMO and found all classes changed so much, that essentially all I had learned was out of the window.
Now when you start anew, that may not be such a big issue, you learn from scratch. But when you have 8 different max level chars, it is a wall of new learning which simply feel tiresome.
Second, the new WvW Borderlands. OMG. I used to love WvW so much, but this new BL WVW map is just… hilariously bad. It is a friggin maze! In the old map, you could navigate by just looking around. Here, so much walls block my view, so the only way to naviagate that uber complicated map is by opening the map ever 20 seconds. >.<
Finally, the new zone(s).
You know, normally, when I have had no expansions with new zones, there is a feeling like a new world opened to me. Here, I enter the new zone, and from the first plateau there is one small spiral way down. And then a split to a second small spiral way down. Everything feel so crammed and small, so railroaded. There is no feeling of a wide open area, but so many small walkways. And like EVERY SINGLE mob cripples, stuns and pushes me back. And since there are so many small tunnel-ways, I have to fight my way through ALL of them mobs. Added the fact that the classes were so reworked I hardly know anymore what I am doing, I found myself dying all the time! Some group of mini dinosaurs: dead. You cant walk into a corner to pull them there, you can’t walk around them, because the tunnel-like setup prevents that.
And finally the time gating and mastery gating. I think enough of that was written already, but that was like kinda the final nail in the coffin. It just stopped to feel like fun, and seriously began to feel like work. That’s NOT how a good expansion is done. With some good rework, it can one day be a passable expansion. But it will surely never be recognized as one of the great expansions of MMO history.
Anet has a weird habit closing threads. shrug A problem doesn’t go away just because you lock threads.
Yeah, alas. YB had considerably lost players. The trend may in the long run even kill WvW. Without enemies, no WvW.
I think Anet underestimates the dynamics that can happen here.
is, there are too few of them. Period.
Oh look it’s SBI again, stomping us into the ground. As last week. And the week before. And the week before that and ALL the 7 last weeks.
Yey.
Not.
If there were, say, 50 servers, it would work. But as it is, there is simply too little variety. We face the same disaster blasters every week now, and barely a few people are left even going into WvW, understandably.
I think the server vs server idea was just bad. I dont see how that can be handled with the current gross imbalance of power.
And there is nothing in sight to seriously support the inferior server. The server with superior numbers and more WvW oriented guild simply can’t be stopped. WvW seriously and quickly need some sort of remedy for that. With each passing week more and more people will move on to more active servers. And then what? Even GW2-WvW isn’t sacrosanct. If the balance tips, a breaking point is easily reached where people amass will stay away from WvW altogether. Then bringing them back is hard work, if at all possible.
This a 1000 times.
I am SICK AND TIRED over this! The overpowered perma-stealth built is a big issue in WVW for over a YEAR now! And ANet did NOTHING to remedy it for all the time! Yeah now the patch day happend, and guess what … Perma Stealth is STILL there.
Thanks for nothing ANET.
Sorry, but if you don’t see this is a big issue you just have no clue of the concept of open pvp in MMOs. Stealth per se is something that tends to kill open pvp, but perma-stealth is, as EVERY open PVP expert KNOWS FOR YEARS, is a BIG NO GO. Something everyone in the instustry KNOWS you do not do, period, paragraph.
Is that so hard to get?
Give Thieves other toys, but for Gods Sake eliminate the frigging perma stealth after over a year!
Why are you even doing it if you don’t enjoy it? I don’t understand the reasoning behind this.
Err because I too want some cool items?
What am I doing with my life… I sit in virtual towers waiting for Merc Camps to be grey. Usually too late. Sitting around more. In a WvW zone, because if I DONT sit and wait, I miss it.
Or running behind sentries, getting there too late as well, or being ambushed by 4 enemies.
What the kitten am I doing with my life?
Ok thanks for the demolition tips. ^^
I still think the Merc Camp stuff is crazy.
(
EDIT: Ok I tried the demolition thing: just placing a ram doesnt count, and hacking on a door with weapons didn’t count either.
(edited by elikal.7356)
@elikal on the demolition achievement, the key is that you have to do enough damage
You do NOT have to use a piece of siege. It’s still a pain, but hopefully that helps you a bit.
I’m only 2 of 15 on merc camps…
50.
Altogether it’s 50.
:(
Managed this evening 8.
Anet is concerned about your negative gameplay experience and will seek to alter these problems sometime in the future when it’s to late. cough
Or maybe the guy in charge of WvW will put his foot down and the minions will scurry into action. Who knows!
Great so on top of failure to get more than 3 in HOURS and the sheer frustration I get mockery as well…
Sorry, but connecting this, esp. the Merc Camps to WvW achievement was the worst idea ever!
Grr… I tried to get the Achievements for Season 1 WvW, but I just CAN’t get the Merc Camp or the Demolition Achievement.
Merc Camp: can SOME programmer PLEASE remove those Toxic Plants from there? They are SUPER annoying! I doubt anyone who goes there cares for the Toxic Plant! They make it for small groups nigh impossible now to tag the Ogres to get the achievement!
Also, Demoliton. Sigh. If you dont have Ram Mastery, NOBODY lets you do the stuff. Plus, it depends way too much on lucky WvW matchups! If you have an overpowering enemy, or your server overpowers the enemy, how can you attain that, when the enemy doesn’t HAVE keeps or your server has no chance?
The rest is ok, but these two Achievement parts are just WAY too fickle and diffcult to get atm.
Funny how different the responses are.
stop attacking other servers with stuff u assume befor u know the real story. also a lot of players didnt log in after being crushed by t1 servers for 6 weeks straight. we did not tank. most of the people wanted to stay in gold!Just an FYI, FA didn’t tank or lose to be in Silver on purpose. It came down to the rise of SBI (which I agree should be in Gold along with FA) and the RNG system and the last couple matches before leagues started. FA’s ranking was eroded by playing lower tiered servers while SOS and SBI were able to earn ranking. Eventually, Maguuma was able to hold on for Gold league and SBI and FA stayed in Silver.
On a side note, if you play a ranger in wvw, you’re going to have a bad time. Just my opinion.
Wow. Are you from SBI?
That’s sad, sorry to hear it. Well crushing us Yaks this week must be a relief then, hehe. Interesting to hear the other side of the story. God, I can only imagine how it must be to be crushed 6 weeks straigh!
whimper

I guessed some servers thought like, hey let’s rather be top in Silver than bottom in Gold. But maybe I am overthinking it. I met tons of FA people in dungeons and ALL were very friendly, so my image of FB server is very positive. ^^
Strangely I haven’t met a single SBI guy in a dungeon ever. I always wondered how the servers are. Alas, we have no server forums. That would be interesting.
I think the correct word is Toxic, theres little anet or people on the forums can do, its primarily a community problem
Ah ok sorry, English is not my first langauage.
I know ANet can’t do anything about that directly. But change the system, because if it goes on like this I am away. This has just developed sad.
I feel the matchups are horrible. First we steamrolled the enemy, which was not fun and got almost no XP, now we are steamrolled which is even less fun and no XP as well.
So no. I don’t like the League AT ALL.
Acidic mood in chat since tournament and hax/cheat suspect
===========
I used to enjoy WvW as my main activity. But recently… I feel like is has be soured a lot. I play on Yak’s Bend, and usually that’s a very friendly server. But the grouping we faced in the last 2 weeks have been continually going down the drain. I know, when things go bad, that’s to be expected. But seriously! I can’t stand it no longer, so I quit the WvW until another server shuffle comes on Friday.
I really think the matches of the tournament are horrible. I dunno what mechanics ANEt has employed, but both Fort Aspen (FA) and even more so now Stormbluff Island (SBI) have been overwhelmingly powerful. Yaks was in both matches the 2nd, I can’t imagine how the 3rd ranked may feel. After a time I hear FA and SBI are actually belonging in the Gold League, not our Silver League, but they played bad on purpose. I would not even think anyone would do that, because it sounds so hilarious and idiotic. Either way, IMVHO the entire matchup system is a catastrophe. In the first week we steamrolled the enemy, now we are being steamrolled, both isn’t fun, because in both cases you don’t make any meaningful XP. So I dont understand the zeal of powerful servers to WANT to have weak competition, because I found such matches dull and they give much less XP than balanced matches.
Second, maybe ANet should seriously monitor the chat. I hear commanders have been harassed and harrass each other now. Other commanders entirely dropped form the radar. As I said so many times: the WvW system just doesn’t allow the 2nd and 3rd ranked to really catch up. Once the first ranked is on top, there is a bad dynamics against the 2nd and 3rd, because people start to leave. Since the offense is WAY much more powerful than the defense, it further supports the First Ranked and makes catching up virtually impossible.
Now, everyone suspects anyone as spy, the mood is on the floor! And that’s just proof that the matchup and the entire WvW system simply doesn’t work. And then there is of course the problem that some servers had entire WvW guilds, so when your pick-up-Zerg is confronted by a pure guild Zerg, well guess who wins. All this is the responsibility of ANet to balance somehow. The players can do just so much! But I am just tired of either steamrolling over the enemy or being steamrolled over. That’s just totally absurd.
And one more thing about hax: I have seen small duel of 3 vs 3 or so in the WvW maps, and sometimes the health drop of some chars just doesn’t seem right. When 8 people take almost a minute to kill an Ele, or a Warrior fighting against my Ranger doesn’t get ANY damage for over 30 seconds, I know that is simply not possible. So either there are some bugs, or some people have cheats. Both feels equally troubling.
So. I just had to write this. As it is, WvW is profoundly soured to me. All the acidic comments. And it is so POINTLESS. SBI just has 5-10 times as many people, and I am just tired of being cannon fodder. The matchups are just absurd, and the entire WvW mechanic has a waaaay to weak defensive system. Once the enemy is ahead a certain point, you simply CANT catch up. Oh and dont even begin about clever strategy. In the long run, only superior number and superior gear counts. It just doesn’t make sense to put a casual server against hardcore WvW pro servers, and that’s exactly what’s happening now. We have good commanders and good players, but they are casual players most of them. Now the mood is down the drain, and all the arguing makes me sad and sick, so I can’t log in anymore, because it just drags me down. Didn’t think a hobby supposed to distract me and lift me up would actually more drag me down.
(The 45 characters for titles is TOO SHORT)
THIEF BURST DMG FROM STEALTH:
To be honest, I dont know anyone really reads the Nth post here. But ONE thing bugs me in the balance, the Thief-Stealth-system.
I think the Thief build where one Thief can essentially perma-stealth and do ungodly damage from out of stealth in WvW has to go. It is not fun, and doesn’t really contribute to the ongoing war either. It’s just profoundly unfun and there is virtually no way you can do against it.
Give the Thief a different concept. Like doing dps, but not in that amount and maybe you raise his dodge and escape mechanicsm and nerf the dmg burst. A perma-stealthed Thief can endlessly harass you, leave the fight whenever he wants, reenter at his whim, and you can’t do anything about it to counter that.
It’s unfun, not balanced and the entire stealth-burst-DPS mechanic has to go.
EDIT: ELE ARE TOO WEAK
Also, I feel Elementalists are way too weak. No class is so much forced to constant lolcoperting, is so much a weak jack of all trades, but good at nothing. Either the damage needs to rise considerably, or some mechanisms to keep the enemy at bay OTHER than CONSTANT lolcoptering are needed.
(edited by elikal.7356)
I must admit I am not sure what to do besides a complete rework, either. shrug
Phew somehow I had expected putting servers in Leagues in the Tournament would group us in somehow servers of similar stregth, to keep the WvW interesting. In reality, alas, the three servers are still VASTLY different.
The third ranked is usually MUCH weaker than the other two, and the First ranked is totally overpowering. It is so different and uneven matched that I wonder if the league system is even working at all? So far I didn’t notice any difference form the totally random system before. Both first ranked servers of the last two weeks seemed quite misplaced compared to my home server.
And doesn’t that sort of beat the sense of WvW, when one faction is so overpowering they can muster 4-5 times as many people on ALL maps, while our server just manages to have maybe one Zerg of reasonable size? If one server is so dominant that by Monday everyone else has gone, even the winner has a boring time and gets hardly any WXP anymore. So what’s the deal?
Sorry but the league system of putting servers together is TOTALLY out of whack at the moment.
Sure that ele is active combat but we don’t have the tools to balance the fact that we are weak, we don’t DPS, we don’t support a lot. We are just trying to DPS a bit without beeing OS. We are in paper and Anet tells us that perma vigor is just a too big advantage?
That’s all true, but the OP’s complaints weren’t about that. He claimed he couldn’t defeat PvE foes and keep them at distance while standing still. I merely told him that if he moves while fighting, he will have enough survivability to at least be able to complete PvE stuff.
I am not standing still. But the Ele is over the top dependent on constant running around. Other classes need to dodge now and then! But with Ele I need to be lolcoptering the enemy all the time, and thats just plain silly.
It’s a twofold issue for me. Since the tournament stuff started, the queues are HELLISH long. I dont know any reasonable remedies though. Today I queued 2+ hours then I gave up, which sort of sux since WvW is what I am mostly interested in.
Second: everytime I swap a character, the queing is reset, and when I want to swap a char being in WvW, I am kicked out.
Both also sux. I tend to swap chars in PVE and WvW often, but now with the queues I NEVER get into WvW again that way. That’s not so cool. I understand the queues can’t be easily remedied, but I really would like to see the queueing stays on me, even when I change character and I can swap inside WvW to another char without having to re-queue.
It’s a bit sad, but I played Ele up to level 40, but I just can’t get into it. I tried various combinations of weapons, not many traits to chose yet with 40 anyway. But somehow I don’t feel so weak with ANY class even remotely. I put most in defense and got tons of VIT and TOUGHNESS stuff to counter how super fast my HP always dropped.
I tried D/D, thinking close range does most dmg, and it looks cool, but… phew it forces me to circle around my enemy, and even then I lost a lot of fights. Like skill point challanges against single mobs, which ALL my other classes easily managed, I died 2-3 times before somehow getting it.
I play Staff in WvW, walking with the Zerg and playing Artillery, but I seriously have the feeling not to contribute much. Don’t get many drops with that char in WvW. (Unlike my Warrior or Necro who get drops in WvW left and right!)
Finally I tried scepter/focus which I managed the “best”, but still I was constantly swapping through the 4 elements, deffing with earth, healing with water, doing dmg with fire and then going back, so QUITE a hassle.
I did the same stuff afterwards with my Ranger who by chance has the same level, 40, and I felt like playing frigging GOD MODE compared to that! Just sent out pet and let my axes bounce around. I mean, with Necro, Mesmer and War I can almost fight afk! At least in PVE. Mesmer is so easy. Just make my clones, and sit down drink some tea and watch the fight. But my Ele… always RUN RUN RUN like a frightened bunny!
I dunno, it just feels lame always have to run so much. But I admit with Ele=Mage, I always imagine mages to be more… like Gandalf, or Elminster! But I felt more like Schmendrick! Not cool. I mean, I’d love to play Ele for the cool elemental attacks. But really… it feels like a drag. Other wizards I played, like in WOW, EQ2 or WAR had ways to keep the enemy away, eithe by slowing them or freezing them, by tank pets or whatevs. But the GW2-Ele has… nothing. It’s just not possible to play and mostly stand there, what I imagine with a “mage”: a mostly stationary character who destroys his enemies from afar. Here, health just goes down like WHOOPSY DAISY.
shrug Just my 5 cents. Seems to need some serious love, this class.
His ressource based attacks can be spammed unlimited, while the other classes have timers and THAT is where the Thief beats you. He waits when you are in the timer gap and from there you have zero escape. Whereas the Thief can stay in stealth virtually indefinitely.
Did you read the patch notes? This will no longer be possible. Thieves will not be able to stay stealthed indefinitely and come out with full initiative. That is done… finished… k-put hence why most D/P thieves are or will be upset as their entire style of play will need massive adjustments.
I re-read the changes and compared them to my Thief, but sorry… I dont see any dramatic changes in the issues at hand, namely the over the top DPS burst.
IMVPO the main issue comes down to this:
The skills of Thieves are ressource based. So he has control over his attacks way more than any other class, who has timers. A thief can reset the fight and re-enter it ANY TIME as ever he decides and you can do NOTHING against that. If he runs away invisible you burn out AOE and then you are on timer = a sitting duck.
His ressource based attacks can be spammed unlimited, while the other classes have timers and THAT is where the Thief beats you. He waits when you are in the timer gap and from there you have zero escape. Whereas the Thief can stay in stealth virtually indefinitely.
So nerfs are needed for Thieves, but in totally different areas.
Please pitch in and suggest them in their post.
Oof, fair request, but I fear I am not up to it. The skill system has so many details. The general idea would not a nerf, but a CHANGE.
Thieves lose most of the high burst DPS or applying insidious stacks of bleed, and in turn get greater survivability. More like rebuilding the entire class and virtually making the stealth ONLY as a method to escape, not as part of an attack strategy. I would prefer a full rebuild over a mere nerf. Thieves should not be weaker, but different. Less of the overpowering glasscannons which attack from endless stealth.
I see this variant of Thief as a broken idea. The invis-burst-DPS roamer must be eliminated as viable playstyle.
That’s hardly relevant and WAY too less. Many of the nerfs are not even asked for. None of those things really needed a nerf, but the ungodly high backstab/stealth burst DPS needs a nerf. Not this.
So nerfs are needed for Thieves, but in totally different areas.
All you really need to know about Wvw / Pvp as grownup.
Yes, but I see Ranger the same as Engineers and Elementalists more as support class in the Zerg. They stay in the background or roam the sidelines, either supporting other people, by adding some dmg to a already running fight, or by keeping an enemy Zerg at bay with tons of AOE coverage.
Don’t underestimate the effect of psychology. If arrows, fireballs or the like cover an area with AOE, many Zergs will step back, even though they could push forward. Only few, well trained warrior/guardian havy Zergs tend to break through wide arrays of AOE coverage.
It`s a different role. A thief is more useless in a Zerg, and more soloing in WvW areas. A Ranger is more to support the Zerg and with Ele the only class to defend castle walls with his 1200 range.
In the end, play what you enjoy, find your niche.
Well whatevs… but I think WvW really needs some changes. Just running over the map 24/7 is sort of boring too.
You answered your own comment. Defense is not fun for most people. Why would ANET introduce a new mechanic that makes the game less fun for most of the players?
People do what gives WXP. Give defense the same WXP as attack, make castle sieges take longer, and people do do defense just as much as offense. The reward and siege system just needs balancing.
@aaron: It is boing, because it goes way too fast! Building a good defense takes hours, and is overrun in a minute! Thats just horrible balancing. If its balanced, it is also more exciting.
You see, I am one of those Defender guys. I like to play with strategy in WvW. But alas, for some reason 9 out of 10 commanders in WvW just RUN over the map, conquer and then don’t care heck to actually built defenses.
Yes I know, conquering gives WXP, defending gives only very little. Which also seems a big issue, so since the tournament, EVERYONE is just running over the blasted map! NOBODY cares for strategy! NOBODY cares to hold one of the important keeps! Let alone secure supply lines! It is all just one chaotic zerg horde!
I am just sick and tired spending hours to built the defenses of keeps, standing guard, which I do out of IDEALISM, because I PAY arrow carts, I PAY catapults, I PAY keep upgrades, and if I call, nobody comes to defend, because all are running in Zergs. Yes, I understand, it is a different playstyle. But I am just tired of this mindless zerging and the total loathing of any strategy. So you can find another idiot trying to defend the keeps and protect your backs!
Sidenote: Anet really needs to look into a mechanism to prevent this keep swapping every 2 minutes! You can built HOURS of defenses and they are overrun by 5-10 people in 90 seconds. That just plain wrong if you ask me. I really would like more strategy and less running madness.

Thief fail builts and me (a tragic story in 3 acts)
ACT I – OHH LOOK IMATHIEF
You see, I play GW2 almost solely for WvW these days. As I said many times, the quest-less PVE of GW2 is simply not my thing. Like at all. I do PVE sometimes, but rarely.
So, when I played my first char, a Warrior to max through PVE, I felt I had seen enough of GW2 PVE. I began to play WVW and really like it. The dynamics! The thrill! The adventure!! What’s not to like! So, again and again, I had this experience you guys prolly know: I was regularly kitten d and gangbanged by THIEVES.
You know the drill. You walk some lonely road to find the zerg, and BLAMMO, some Thief kills you. Hell, I haven often enough seen Thieves keep 4-5 people busy for hours! It’s both super annoying, but of course I was fascinated by the idea! So I shook my fist into the Tyrian sky and yelled, I CAN DO THAT TOO, ha!
So I rolled a thief and began to level him!
ACT II – TREADMILL LEVELLING
Levelling again was a chore for me, mostly disliking the PVE, and WvW levelling was… slow. Not much to see in this act, I made it up mostly for the dramatic effect. I mostly stuck to a survival built here, knowing I was weak in low levels, so I stuck with Zerg groups while levelling in WvW and as I said, it was an entire defensive survival built. Nothing to show off. Until I finally reached level 80! YEY ME! Now you all wait and see how I all gank yousa!
ACT III – OR SO I THOUGHT
Now see, this is where the woe (and questions) come. I read MANY built guides, I watched dozens of Youtube videos with advises. And I went to what was said to be the classic gank built, 0-30-30-10-0, all based on prolonging sneak and doing mucho damage from stealth, with Dagger and Pistol. You know the drill: spamming black powder and heartseeker.
Only – that it DOESNT THE FRACK WORK!
God. I swear I never ever died so much. I tried. I really tried. No matter how many times I kissed the mud, I always ran back over and over. The really bad time came, when out of curiosity I tried lv 80 mobs with that built. HELL DID I SUCK. As in the history of Tyria! As in the frigging history of sucking!! It wasn’t pretty. Until some guildmate told me, hey you know why they rule in 1 VS 1? They have the expensive uber gear, and you casual gamer DON’T. Ha ha.
What a farce. What a letdown. Yeah, I hear you say, serves you right trying to be a ganker! But seriously. It’s in the game. So even being victim, I never complained. It’s part of the package. It’s war. shrug But… kitten ation! I am so kitten ed at my sheer inability! How can they DO this?
So I come back, sobbing myself into sleep, wondering what to do? Any advise besides “go and farm uber gear”, because… I dont do dungeon grinds. Sorry. But, repetitive grinding the same OVER AND OVER is not my thing.
Advise pls.

I know, counting Blizzard and WOW experiences as positive disqualifies me in the eyes of many here, but in the case of support I must say, it remains the shining example how ingame support SHOULD be. I remember various examples of bugges quests or not spawning mobs asf, where I asked for support and within 10-30 minutes a Blizzard GM came, unlocked or spwaned or did whatever was possible!
Now in GW2, I have experienced already 3 Skill Point challanges where for some reasons the NPC doesn’t spawn or something else doesn’t work. Last example: Vigil Keep and Gendarran Fields. The Skill Point NPC is gone. And does an ANet GM come to spawn it for me or unlock the skill point? Nope. Now in GW2 I worked that night the entire map, and that is the last one thing I need for map completition, which just makes it extremely frustrating. And it’s not the first issue, where I had to write and days later I got some “we work on it” bla bla. Maybe other people got ingame help, I didn’t.
Same with my crash, where I asked if some GM can just mark the story as done so I could proceed or something. Nada.
ARE there any GMs at all helping?? Or is that the price we pay for “free to play”??
I really, really think a Triple AAA MMO needs a fast ingame GM service for issues, the way I know and loved it from Blizzard. That is simply not acceptable.
