Update (2 of 2)

Like pretty much any server you choose to join, off-peak coverage remains a problem which we understand won’t be solved by a magical “oceanic/french canadian guild.” Gunnar’s has excellent wvw players which makes us generally rank well over our “coverage class”, so we find the mismatch in players particularly pronounced at times. These are certainly great opportunities for those who enjoy roaming in small groups (2-5) as it seems our opponent lately seem to provide us an abundance of prey (in particular we’ve been seeing quite a few packs of low skilled pew pew rangers and p/d thieves lately). The more exciting 1 on 1s, or 1 on 2s, 2 on 2s, seem to be somewhat trickier to find against some servers (especially the germans), but not significantly more so than in the past.

As our coffee raids proved in the pasts, the potential to mobilize a somewhat stronger morning force is there for those who are so inclined, but GH has been known to slack here occasionally, especially during a boring matchup. You will find that if you are willing to put in the time in the morning or other off-peak hours in wvw, you’ll quickly rise up in prominence on our server because it’s such a critical time in the matchups for us. Gunnar’s would also certainly benefit from an organized guild which enjoys making itself a nuisance in enemy borderlands to take off some of the pressure in our own corner when the server is trying to build up momentum for the day.

Gunnar’s is sill welcoming people interested in joining our community and has no plans to stop this no matter where we sit in the ranking. As previously stated, we can still easily fit a couple more large raiding guilds into the enemy borderlands without them risking being split up by queues. For those coming without a guild, GH offers a wide variety of WvW and PvX guild choices to match your preferred play style. Gunnar’s team speak is also available to support all guilds on the server (including more pve focused guilds) so make sure to contact the community to help you get set up when you arrive.

If you’re looking to join a community where the primary focus of playing wvw is to have fun, there’s a good chance GH will be the right place for you.

If you’d like more information on the server, feel free to PM me or make a post directly on our server forum which still can be found at:

Update (1 of 2)

I hope people can forgive oslaf for his enthusiastic bumps from time to time. It’s primarily to indicate the Gunnar’s still has plenty of room for anyone who wants to join our friendly server community. You may find some of the shorter (generally 5-20) queues have returned to home map (and/or) EB during prime time if there’s a lot of exciting action happening on those maps, but the enemy borderlands still have plenty of space for a couple more raiding guilds to crank up the GH pressure at prime time. You will not have any trouble finding large enemy blobs happy to provide you with a steady source of lootbags at that time.

At the moment, the blacktide immigration to gunnar’s has helped return the servers numbers to become a prime-team/late evening beast. We’re particularly happy with our server’s continued friendly and relaxed atmosphere even when things get tense. We generally have good commander coverage for our pug population during prime time, which generally remains strong well into the night as many people from our raiding guilds often join in after their own raid is done to chill with the rest of the server. You’ll find open mics and other types of server events as part of the GH package (along with the opportunity to join some highly focused and strong raiding guilds).

For the most part, gunnar’s hold is running as a great server community where people are happy to play together. There are always going to be a few bumps along the way, but we’re very proud of the spectacular community we’re a part of. Finding the balance between being a server that particularly enjoys the fights and balancing out the ppt equation to make sure we don’t drop into the “dead” part of wvw is something I think gunnar’s is starting to do very well. Our commanders have become much more responsive to our scouts, and the cooperation between pug commanders and guild groups has been excellent when it comes to defence.

There is a bit of things for us to figure out still. The guildenzerg meta seems to be slowly shifting to a hand-holding guildenzergs meta (even among the non-german servers), and I think quite a few of us miss the days a solid 15 man group could carve up enemy blobs like a Sunday roast. You will still bump into enemy guild groups of sizes ranging from small (5-10) to the absurdly large (40+), so if you know where to look, you will find great fights in all sorts of sizes (at least until you wipe them often enough for them to call their entire server down on your head).

Currently we have enough space for guild groups to regularly map hop a few times during prime-time (including calls to save key objectives when needed), but larger guild groups (and server events) do sometimes need to be aware that moving to a busy/active map may split up the group for a short time (generally 10-15 minutes).

Part 3, Things you need to know about gunnars if you are thinking about joining our server, as an individual, as a guild, as a new player to the game or old one looking for something different (continued):

Gunnars is stable. We gain and lose the more mobile raiding guilds for various reasons (and to be honest no one server can really hold any of them), but the heart of the server (those players dedicated to keeping things going in both the good times and the bad) remain. We won’t fall over and beg to make sure amazing (insert a raiding guild name) decides to join us, we don’t panic just because amazing (insert a different raiding guild name) is leaving. We welcome all who want to join our community, we part as friends with those who move elsewhere, and we keep our core strong. Coming to gunnars means you will not need to worry about a server suddenly disintegrating without warning. In fact, if someone does go, we tend to tell them “see you soon” because quite often we do see them returning. The fact so many are willing to come back reminds us that gunnars is a special place, even if some need to take some time to learn that the grass isn’t actually greener on the other side.

So the situation on gunnars ultimately remains this. If you want to be part of a server, with a strong community, space, and little (to no) queues, gunnars could very well be the right choice for you and/or your guild no matter where in the world you happen to play. Make yourself know to either myself (or any of our staff at our server forum) and we’ll do our best to make sure you’re quickly welcomed. Pug commanders willing to put in the time to organize themselves (and let the server know) will find a group of friendly people who simply want to play together and not be particularly bothered what guild tag you’re wearing. At prime time the raiding guilds can come out to play in a way that respects their desires for good fights, but continue to work with the PUG commander to ultimately do as strong as we can in a particular match up.

Come to gunnars to experience how a strong community makes wvw fun, no matter what the odds (because where we’re currently placed they can be either good or bad quite easily). If you do so now, you’ll find it 1000 gems cheaper than almost every other wvw european server in the gold league.

Part 2, Things you need to know about gunnars if you are thinking about joining our server, as an individual, as a guild, as a new player to the game or old one looking for something different:

Gunnars has space. You won’t find any major queues on our server except perhaps EB at prime time and at reset. Gunnars has space for a big raiding guild or two where they can all get into the same map at prime time with little struggle. When you get there, you will have no trouble finding blobs to slay and our position in silver does mean you will also find other guild groups to fight and test your mettle against.

Gunnars has a strong community. Gunnars has space for smaller wvw guilds or individual players. With our opened mic efforts, a wvw guild without the ideal numbers (generally 15-25) to have that solid group synergy for fighting, can still take part in raids to improve their skills and grow into their own (and possibly discover which existing guilds on the server they’d like to join). Medium sized guilds (closer to those magic numbers) will be welcomed and efforts will be quickly made to help make sure they integrate well with our existing guilds. Gunnars is place to come to if you want to work together with your server mates, instead of competing against them.

Gunnars likes to fight. This is pretty much a no brainer for the simple reason we are, as a rule, relatively strong fighters (thanks to our strong raiding and roaming roots) and when standing on equal ground in equal numbers, we win far more than we lose. Most of our commanders will not shy away from a fight even when facing what appears to be overwhelming odds. It works too often not to try, and if we do wipe, gunnars can pick itself up, and make appropriate adjustments to do better the next time.

Gunnars knows how to work out manned. Since we tend to do so well at prime time, we’re routinely matched up against servers who can field the bigger numbers offpeak. Gunnars veterans have been hardened to this reality, and those afraid of a little challenge have already long left to the blobs of gold tier servers. We value our ppt players and guilds a great deal who will never find themselves bored of things to do offpeak. Their efforts help keep us slipping to a point where we no longer have an enemy to fight.

The community is strengthened through its forum. Our community forum http://www.gunnars-hold.eu/ remains the key place for keeping us working as a strong server. For all their limitations, forums remain probably the best way for people of a shared interest (in this case the server) who play at different times of the day to continue to share information and coordinate their efforts. Anyone guild (or even individual players) who want to be heard, and take part in how the server acts as a whole, needs at least one of its members (and ideally its leader) to be willing to log in there on a daily basis to pay attention on what is going on there. There is a place there for everyone to be heard.

Gunnars has moved towards the use of TS even for pug commanding. Gunnars has created a strong TS community which all members of the server to use. All guilds that are part of the server (even those not entirely focused on WvW) can make use of it. Our open mics and other server events generally make use of it. Even our pug commanders (whether they have a cross borderland focus or the EB prime time com) use it. You will get the most benefit from your wvw experience (in terms of survivability and loot) by using it (you do not need a microphone, simply be willing to log on to listen is enough). This shift towards adopting the TS meta has played a huge role in our servers ability to fight and scout. The TS even now has server based music bot which anyone doing a server based event can make use of (using either premade playlists, or providing a spotify playlist of your own).

Gunnars is international. Although the lingua franca is without a doubt english, most of our wvw players come from all over the world. Quite often, the ones calling out for the blood of specific language servers (whether french, spanish, or german) come from people who speak that language as their native tongue. Gunnars tends to get those smart friendly ones who rather play in english and be part of the greater community as a whole. We also have non-english raiding guilds who operate quite well on gunnars and are treated respect. So long as you have one member comfortable enough to communicate to the server in english, gunnars happily welcomes players from all over the world.

So now that the season is over, we expect that there will be some shifting when it comes to people moving servers. Guilds and individuals will start to wonder which server is the best for their WvW needs. GH strong community and history of raiding guilds makes it an ideal choice for anyone interested in playing in the top tier of the silver league , and assures that server growth continues to remain consistent, steady and strong (rather than simply having a flash in the pan rise and fall).

I would like to talk about the season primarily from a GH perspective. This is not intended to talk about any other servers in particular like a matchup thread, but primarily to share the experience of a GH player during this time.

Part 1, End of the Fall Season Report from gunnar’s hold:

The season allowed for a great deal of positive growth for this wvw server and it was based primarily on the servers core rather than any bandwagon effect.

Normally our morning coverage has been an Achilles heel, but not so this season. In fact in 3 of the 4 matchups of the season, according to http://www.gw2score.com, we gained the most points between 6:00 am and 11:59 am. That included two matchups again viznu (who claimed a highest tick this last matchup 555 at 6:18 am) and one against piken, who obviously dominated overnight this season as well. When Gunnars woke up, it did not get discouraged and decide the match was lost. It simply started the work it needed to do to hold onto an extraordinarily tight lead and do well during prime time.

Similarly the community as a whole stepped up. Our will was not broken in our first week match up against AG where we came back more than once from large point deficits (over 10k at least once in that matchup). On days where it mattered the most, people took over from the morning gains to keep the pressure up all the way to prime time. Our scouts sometimes did such an amazing job this season that members of another server (I won’t mention which one) even accused us of having spies in their teamspeak. Yesterday, the morning rush had people so committed to protecting a relatively dead home map, that they got excited on the TS when they saw crossed swords over a camp.

In addition, cooperation did not stop when prime time began. Our guilds have now started to step up in turn and host open mics so that anyone who wanted to raid could have a chance to do so even if their particular guild was not offering one at the time. Although raiding guilds still dominate the borderlands, you did not have to stick just to EB to find a strong organized group of players to fight with.

Gunnars can walk away this season with a great deal more than a second place overall finish and 650 tournament claim tickets. Gunnars can pat itself on the back and feel a great deal of pride with what it managed to accomplish with what it had to work with. We will be taking advantage of that strengthened community to push ourselves forward to the next steps and deal with the fact that the wvw population does not seem to be growing rapidly enough to make up for those burning out of this game mode.

Now that you cannot banner a lord, we might be better called gunnar’s handhold, because when our server does play together, we are a force to be reckoned with.

(Continued from previous post)

We have room

In spite of our current ranking, our queues are pretty much minimal (if they exist at all). Prime time hasn’t changed, but generally the only map that queues up regularly is EB (it depends on the exact time and the match up of course, but the queue to EB is also generally small, less than 10 people or so). The borderlands have lots of room for people who wish to run raiding guilds or server wide events. Right now, any raiding guild which joins GH should have no issue finding a map they can play on together at the time they want to play. Individual players should easily be able to find a map to play on at prime time rather than being forced to wait in edge of the mist for a map to open up.

Here are a few screenies of our queue situation over the last couple of weeks (taken primarily at prime time since that’s really the only time there are queues at all to speak of).

We know how to fight.

With a long history of raiding focused guilds, the majority of our player base (and pretty much all of our guilds) understand the delicate balance between respecting another team’s battles and supporting each other when help is asked for. Most of our player base loves open field combat and will not shy away from an even fight (since we feel fairly confident that we’ll win it). Many people in our PuG zergs also belong to raiding guilds. GH exerts a great deal of discipline and self control under a clear and communicative commander.

Because of this, anyone who wants help to become a better WvW player will find fellow servermates who have both the knowledge and the kindness to be willing to provide direct and meaningful assistance.

We could use more players off-peak, particularly in the morning

I think our recent match up with Vizunah highlights how much coverage makes a difference in WvW. We could easily get a 500 tick each night at prime time (it may have even breached 600) but in the morning it was them who cut our tick well below 100. Anyone who brought strong morning coverage to our server would basically become an instant heroe, since it would allow us to properly defend our gains made at prime time. We would pretty much shoot up the rankings and that guild would instantly have a major and prominent role on our server.

We won’t be paying people to join our server

The mercenary practice of buying guilds to come to your server is a baffling one to us. We will welcome and share our community resources with any guild who comes to us on their own, but please do not ask us to pay your way. We’re of the opinion that a guild which can be bought to come to your server also be bought to leave.

We still have a PvE community

As much as megaservers hurt server based PvE communities, GH still can offer more than just WvW. We still run server based daily mining runs and kill tequatl weekly. One of our GH guilds even arranged some outside command support and we slew that silly wurm a few times as well. We’re very protective of the ties that bind us in PvE, and feel very comfortable around members of other known GH guilds when we come across each other in the typical farming haunts (like the current one in orr right now).

If you would like to know more about GH, feel free to ask questions on our community site or send me a PM in game. Even if I don’t know the answer, I probably know someone who does.

Will try to keep this bump primarily informative rather than a direct appeal to recruitment. The purpose of this thread is primarily to give as much accurate information (rather than a slick marketing campaign) so that people can make informed decisions. Since transferring servers does cost money, the GH community wants to make sure those who choose GH as their home server feel satisfied with the choice. To decide which server you should join in GW2, you really do need facts. So here’s some info I can share about GH.

GH has a strong welcoming community with a heavy focus on WvW

If you’re a guild or a individual player, new to the game, or an old hat… if you want to have strong ties to your fellow players in WvW, GH community will have a warm and happy welcome if you chose to join us. We very much want new people who come to our server to feel welcome.

We offer direct technical support to new guilds which come to our server.

In addition to being a good place to advertise your own guild, or forum also offers a place where every player can take part in WvW focused discussions on how we want to organize and structure our efforts. Considering the divisive elements of different approaches to the game (especially along the ppt-fight continuum), they’re constructive and those who take part support each other even if they come from different guilds. I would strongly recommend any newcomer to our server to get involved in the community forum found here.
http://www.gunnars-hold.eu

The GH community also provides a shared TS for all guilds which belong to the server (even those with a PvE focus). As the meta for WvW has shifted to TS commanding on our particular server, those who wish to get a more successful experience out of the blob fights are strongly encouraged to join TS commanders (a microphone of your own is not required). In addition my own guild (and hopefully some others soon) offer open weekly WvW events on the TS server for all members of our server.

TS use on our server can be very high. Last reset we had about 50 people in our server wide open event, and that does not include the typical EB crowd or raiding guilds in their separate channel.

We support each other

When certain raiding guilds struggle (whether its a burned out leader, the summer lull, or even being called away to the arm), or raiding guilds do not turn on each other, but rather offer support. My own guild has raided with other guilds when we were missing a leader for that night, and has lead raids for other guilds when they were in the same situation.

Guilds that come to our server willing to work as part of the overall server team will find allies rather than competitors.

Midnight Mayhem - EU - WvW and PvE

in Looking for...

Posted by: fireseed.4675

fireseed.4675

Time for another status update from Midnight Mayhem.

We’re still based on Gunnar’s Hold, open for newcomers, single players and small guild merges, retaining our laidback, PvX mentality.

WvW
Our guild currently has several different raid leaders who operate 5 prime time raids a week . We’ve come a long way and we can hold our heads highwhen facing other guild groups. We still have not forgotten our raiding roots, which emphasize the fun bonding aspects of raiding.

The Suicide Squad takes part in our fight focused raids who test their metal against blobs and skilled opponents. Safety not guaranteed, but (if you come with the right attitude) fun is. We continue to offer casual raids outside of prime time.

We open our prime time raids to guild member of all classes, but our raid composition would benefit greatly from the addition of more heavies. We expect our raiders to bring the right gear, builds and attitudes for raiding. So long as you are willing to meet to commit to the guidelines set by the raid leaders, we always have room for one more.

Our roamers still follow the wolf pack mentality, and tend to only hunt with the people they trust. New roamers are always welcome to the guild, but there will be no formal introduction to the group. It will be up to them to make their own alliances in this shadowy world of WvW (as it should be).

Many of our guildies also enjoy the Edge of the Mist map from as early as our participation in the beta test. Sometimes they go there for the badges, sometimes they go to level up an wvw alt, and sometimes they go with their 80s to sow chaos and destruction into the enemy zerg. Most of our WvW guildies also generally like to support (and follow) any brave soul willing to tag up as part of the zerg.

PvP
Tpvp and Soloq remain the preferred choices of pvp for most of our PvP players. Generally we play as casual groups (with use of teamspeak whenever possible), with no rigid restrictions on who joins. We have good nights and bad nights, but generally we always have fun.

We welcome pvp players of any skill level, but we’re particularly interested in recruiting players who can provide the necessary leadership to bring us to the next level in tPvP play so long as they understand our “fun first” approach to the game.

MM also intends to try to promote and organize a few pvp tournaments for the greater gw2 community. Here’s a teaser from something in the works now.

PvE
PvE remains the primary interest for the majority of MM members new to the game. For more challenging content, we still have guild only groups doing high level fractals and Arah. We have mastered the big world bosses and still occasionally kill them. We also very actively consume any of the new living story content as it arrives.

There are always old hands in the guild willing to help new members learn the ropes of challenging PvE content. Most of our guild chat organized dungeon runs focus on the quick paths and done at a brisk (zerker gear prefered) but friendly pace. Our guildies also happily help others on less popular paths for dungeon master title.

PvX
Probably the most common thread you’ll notice about MM is in addition to our guild as a whole doing pretty much everything the game has to offer, many of our players having the same approach as well.

You don’t have to do everything the game has to offer as a member of MM. But as a member of MM you certainly can.

In general:
We have enough influence (pun intended) to give our guildies access to all of the perks of belonging to a large guild. We run the +5 supply buff, +15% Karma and the +10% Magic Find buff 24/7. Complete guild missions take place once a week (on Sundays evenings).

If you would like to join the guild, please register and apply at our forum. You can still find it at:

So about all these Cyphers....

in Battle for Lion’s Arch - Aftermath

Posted by: fireseed.4675

fireseed.4675

I held onto several keys because I was reassured that the lair would still remain. The issue of whether or not the chests would be removed was never cleared up by the devs, even after it it was discussed in the post (they had a full week to clear up this information). Although I don’t feel very betrayed by the arenanet team yet (they have made reversals before for not clearly informing their population like with the gift of battle), I am unhappy about this situation. I would hate to see that the people advising use of keys early were correct, and that we have been “trolled.” I expect a response to this particular issue from arenanet soon (they still haven’t woken up and gotten to work yet), and how they decide to respond will impact how much I feel I can trust what they say in their forums in the future.

I’ll forgive the smugness of many of the people who did open their keys right away, because I’m afraid they may have been right to remain cynical about how the reward system in the game works and not to take any chances with anything that has been made explicitly clear.

I’d rather if a meme was made about this situation, it would be a good guy arenanet (greg) that says something along the lines of “Trolls their population into thinking they can still get their shinies on the forum/so reinstates the shinies” rather than a scumbag steve “Tells people that the shinies lair will remain after the update/just doesn’t let you know the shinies themselves will be gone”. It’s still too early to know which would be more accurate.

Update:
Doing some more pvp today I’ve now managed to finish the achievement while only using 3 more stomp finishers (still have 12 left). It looks like if you cancel your own stomp, you still get credit. According to guildies this is apparently a known bug, so I’ll leave it at that for now. I may not have gotten credit for 2 of my stomps because I stomped someone I was never in combat with (did so in stealth after someone else downed them).

I currently have 15 uses left of my temporary scarecrow finisher, but only 3 stomps counted for the meta achievement (a stomping good time). Included screenshots, but both the number of finishers left and the living story meta show up on the hero menu and can’t be displayed at the same time. Could cancelling a finish/being interrupted in pvp have caused the problem?

Autobalance/team selection problems in spvp

in PvP

Posted by: fireseed.4675

fireseed.4675

Situation:
Playing spvp, my team is winning, so people on the other team leave.

Problem:
The losing team now has a significantly worse chance of catching up, which makes the match not fun.

Current solution:
Autobalance a player to keep the teams even in strength. Select one at random if no one volunteers.

My reaction:
Please don’t be me, please don’t be me… le sigh it’s me.

Now I never liked this, but with the new team select option, there’s a new element of serious rage-worthy grief… I’m trying to do my best on this team way behind, and to my surprise, I run into the very opponents from the other team that left.

In my own personal experience:
I’ve seen three different players manage to switch to the winning team with the help of autobalance. One of these players did it in two consecutive games. And in the bizarro game that made me compelled to write a post here, three players from the losing team managed to switch with the autobalance to the winning team at the very end.

I understand the importance of autobalance, as much as it sucks to be put on the other team, trying to keep the competition somewhat interesting has its place.

Now the game can’t be perfect, but I hope most people will agree with me that when someone can leave a losing team, force members of that team to get autobalanced, then rejoin the winning team… is pretty ridiculous, unfun, and should not be part of the game.

What I would love to see:

I would really love the option (if I have been autobalanced) to select to go back to my original team if new players do come in. Similar to the volunteer when autobalance is implemented, you get a choice to rejoin your original team. If several people have been autobalanced, and they all want to be returned to their original team, select one of them at random. This hopefully should make it more riskier for people who simply jump in to a game at the last minute just looking for a easy win (another, but more minor pet peeve in spvp).

I know from reading a dev post in another thread that a leaver penalty is coming down the pipes. I seriously hope part of this penalty will help make sure leaving to switch to the winning team is also impossible. Right now, for me, autobalance feels like a dirty word in pvp.

I’m not a regular forum reader, so I apologize if this topic has been brought up before. But having this happen to me upset me enough that I felt the need to share. I hope I’ve expressed myself in a constructive way, especially considering how much the situation annoyed me.

Missing Guild

Adding my guild’s collective “US TOO!”,
Server: Gunnar’s hold,
Guild: Befuddling our Opposition [BOO]
Character name: Ureeka

Since doing events don’t seem to add any new influence, it seems that we just aren’t connecting to where the guild information is stored. It’s reassuring that it’s not just us I guess. Looking forward to getting it fixed, I have some nervous guildies.

Caudecus Manor (CM) Story Mode Bug

Exact same problem for my group as well. Bug reports with screenshots sent. Extra disappointing since I was half of the party members were new to dungeon, and this makes a terrible first impression to the experience. It’d be nice to know when this is properly fixed, because if i take them into a dungeon again and we run into another game breaker, I’m fairly certain two of two of them are ready to give up on dungeons completely (they didn’t find the ascalon catacomb story mode any fun at all, and now a fail on the last fight, so there was some understandable grumbling at the end).

Finally got it to work myself (on 4th attempt). For the second group of researchers not following, the only thing I think I may have done different is made sure I killed all of the spawned grubs (including the one hiding behind the pillar) before attacking/killing the larger undead abysmal attacking the second group. The second group followed after this. Good luck to those still stuck.
