..and this is the point where I stop playing. When game developers include their godless and god-hating ideology in the game and expect me to be a good lemming and play along I’m just gonna say no thanks. I understand most players would kill their own mother if the ingame quest awarded thirty pieces of silver, but to me role-playing is important in a role-playing game and no I’m not going to roleplay killing Balthazar and helping Asuras. For those who don’t know, Asura is a demon in Hindu mythology and their traits are “power” and “arrogance”, much like the Asuras in GW2.
And no you can’t have my stuff I’ll offer that to one of the gods.
As crazy as this sounds, I’m looking for a WvW build that is good at surviving vs 1-3 enemies. I don’t care if I can kill them or not, I just want to survive as long as possible.
Any tips are appreciated.
Staff + S/S?
Toughness or Vitality as main stat?
…
I dont know, none of those 3 names seems fitting, and i just couldn’t vote for one of them. All three names are “epic”, but these guys are more like a gang of psychos, not a band of legendary heroes.
I second that.
As far as I’m concerned the entire GW2 story is atrocious. Played GW1 since Prophecies and GW1 had many lovely characters players cared about. Who cares about GW2 “heroes”? They are scripted like teenagers and have no hero qualities.
The only character in GW2 that I can think of, who is genuinely a positive and likable character, is Caduceus. His manor is also the best looking place in the entire game, the guy has taste. No wonder that ANet creators of psycho characters don’t like Caduceus and made him into a bad guy in their own story. The same thing goes with Ascalonian ghosts and separatists, and NPC’s in Ascalonian dungeon. Those NPCs there are the heroes. They should’ve been on the side of the player. But no. I even needed a help of a guildie because I couldn’t do one part of the storyline without killing Ascalonians, which I refused to do.
I would pay for the game content that allows me to side with the real heroes and good guys (Ascalonian ghosts, Caduceus) against the bad guys.
He’s not talking about gliders. Ascender is not a glider, it’s a movement animation.
It’s not a bug. It was possible to ride a broom in WvW (the one that comes with the costume), but they changed that so now you can’t.
They are keeping WvW too sterile when it comes to consumables, as if this is some kind of e-sport event.
I use a combo of Endless Nuhoch Tonic with Pot of Hylek Poison and Hylek Blowgun.
I didn’t like how I can’t tag enemies if I transform. These environmental weapons solved that for me. There are no combat animations, but at least I can do damage.
(Experimental Teleportation Gun also helped me with one Vista.)
I can see my own when sending mail, but does recipient see his own owl, or he sees whatever mail carrier I have chosen?
Hey all,
Am having fun with Endless Nuhoch Tonic. Really love it so far.
But I’m trying to get the most out of it. I just tested the 25% movement speed Chronomancer trait and it does not work while transformed. It seems that while transformed none of the traits actually work (as graphically indicated by broken lines).
Can someone with Traveler armor set see if I’d get 25% movement bonus that way. I think it would work because I can get Swiftness from allies while transformed.
Also, do “when struck” armor modifiers work while transformed? Since I can’t fight while transformed (with the exception of Ascalonian tonic I guess), if this works it would technically be a way to tag mobs in PvE at least somewhat.
Anyone else has any other ideas how to improve transformed experience? Perhaps some consumable that would go along with it well?
Compared to GW1, there’s much less individual power in GW2.
Compared to Heroes of the Storm for example, which I briefly tried, GW2 has much more individual power. Not much of a contest as I’ve never played a game with as low ceiling as HotS – no matter how skilled you are you’re only going to do a tiny bit more than someone who is mediocre with the same hero. I’m not sure I ever felt as powerless as there, so I stopped.
Since people are comparing GW2 with GW1 I’ll give my three examples:
1. 55hp monk. A great example how with creativity and skill you can increase your power immensely.
2. My Dervish build in Fort Aspenwood. Pure tank. I would play on a Kurzick side, go out to aggro one turtle and luxon warriors around it, then switch to the other side and aggro the rest. I would thus in total be tanking 2 turtles, 8 luxon warriors, and few enemy players who would try to kill me. With good build I made, and skillful execution, I was near-invincible. That was power. I didn’t need to kill anyone, I just needed to stall until time ran out and we won.
3. Being a Mesmer in PvP. GW1 mesmer could easily kill an unaware caster in 2 seconds by just using one skill (Backfire). And anyone remembers frag mesmer? That was power
I can’t find anywhere how I would look like after using Endless Nuhoch Crusher Tonic. It’s not exactly cheap and don’t want to use it only to find out I don’t like it. Can someone make a screenshot please, or link to existing one.
(And please don’t refer me to nuhoch in the wilderness, it’s not a guarantee of how tonic looks like.)
Alright thanks, that’s been helpful. I finally found a combination that I’m happy about.
1. Just to be sure, Healing Prism doesn’t synergize with passive effect of the Signet of the Ether? Only when healing skill is used?
2. Illusionary Inspiration – is the boon given by the phantasm affected by +boon duration gear I have?
3. Illusionary Membrane, Metaphysical Rejuvenation – is the boon gained (via trait) affected by +boon duration gear I have?
4. Does Temporal Enchanter (longer glamour duration) increase the duration of the Feedback created by Medic’s Feedback?
If you’re a Chronomancer you move 25% faster all the time.
Even if you’re not a Chronomancer, Signet of Inspiration gives Swiftness half of the time (so, 33%). If you use Focus along with that, you’re constantly on 33% pretty much.
If none of the above (such as in my case) then you’ll have Swiftness anyway if you stick to a group (open world PvE, or WvW).
If not even that, then you should consider Runes of the Traveler or Centaur (obviously, some organized groups won’t like you much for that, but for casual gameplay it’s good).
On top of all that, you have Blink. When just traveling somewhere, use Mimic and then Blink, for double Blink.
Hey,
I need a change of atmosphere. Is there any place in Guild Wars 2 (HoT included) where I could farm and fight underwater, or do anything of any significance underwater? I’m obviously not expecting the same results as the rest of the game, but if all underwater areas give 10x less then obviously no point bothering.
Why do people even ask for help with a build when they very intentionally don’t want to be given an optimal build? If your weird personal biases are more important than being optimal, just experiment on your own and do whatever.
Of course my personal biases are more important. I don’t play Guild Wars to “work” and do “hard labor” like some say it in the forum and elsewhere.
My question was not “give me the most optimal build that exists in the game for open world” because that wouldn’t be a Mesmer build anyway. My question was “give me a fun build” and THEN “make it optimized”. Not the other way around.
So, if someone says “I like playing a tank Mesmer, that’s fun for me”, my follow up question is “so what is the optimal Mesmer tank build”.
Your reply to me is utterly useless, it’s basically “but tank mesmer is not optimal, you’re not listening to us”. I didn’t ask you if tank mesmer is optimal, I didn’t ask if scepter is optimal. I can easily see what’s optimal by what people use. If I wanted to be like everyone else I would just shoot myself in the head before slowly dying of boredom. My personal biases are more important to me because my personal biases are who I am. If I didn’t have personal biases I would be a clone, not a person.
So.. I’ve been trying to work around the AoE issue and maybe I lack experience with other classes and their strength, but I think I’m just fine. What I do when mob spawns in HoT is I just run through it spamming sword 1. If I’m too far or mob would die too fast, I tag it with a Well or two. That’s without using any Shatter.
Again, I don’t know how much worse I do like this compared to what I’d do with GS or Staff, or another profession, but it seems ok.
after so much hard work and labor
Hard work and labor?
You’re in the wrong place. Guild Wars has never been about hard work and labor. It has been about fun. That has been the core principle since GW1. Even back then many WoWers and classical MMORPG lovers complained there’s not enough grind, I mean, work and hard labor. That’s why Nightfall (and EotN even more) had so much more grind with all those points, because ANet wanted to please that crowd.
Hard work and labor, seriously, get a job, stop playing games.
If I use Food that gives +x MF, and utility effect (Flask of Pumpkin Oil, for example) that gives +y MF, does this stack? Or only highest value is used?
My point isn’t that it’s not going to be optimal, my point was more that it’s going to be miserable trying to do things that require aoe without any aoe. I suppose if you get raw enjoyment purely from playing the build without that build actually succeeding at anything then that’s ok, but I haven’t met someone yet that enjoyed doing open world events without good access to aoe.
I get your point, but for tagging and AoE in general don’t I get that from:
- Mainhand sword
- Shatters
- Utility skills such as Wells if Chronomancer
- Pistol skill shoots more targets also, although longer cooldown
I don’t get enjoyment from ineffective builds, true, but I also don’t get enjoyment from boring builds no matter how good they are.
Now, I’ve been testing some stuff and here’s what I came up with: I actually like scepter. I also like main hand sword. I like off-hand sword. Fourth piece of equipment I’m not yet sure of. I see the downside of each whether in style or usefulness, but I would consider them all (pistol, focus, shield, torch) based on suggestions here.
I expect to do a lot of shattering since I guess scepter losses a lot of potential without that. This I feel would give me some AoE.
Do I go for condition damage or power? Right now I’ve chosen Dueling, Illusion and Chronomancer trait lines, but feedback is appreciated.
Can someone test other weapons under the same environment, just for comparison. Scepter in particular.
That’s exactly it.
What I want is a PvE GW1 Prophecies Mesmer. You know, that style you choose because it’s cool and you love it, even though it’s more optimal to be a nuking Elementalist or just about anything else. GW2 Mesmer is nowhere near as fun as GW1 but gotta work with what we got.
So, what I need is a build for sword + pistol/torch, and scepter/sword.. something like that. The most optimal one, the most fun one.. I’m aware of the benefits of GS, been using it for a long time but I don’t want to anymore.
I need to choose what expensive armor/weapons to buy, and for that I first need to choose the build I like the most.
What PvE build would you say is fun – at least for you? I’m willing to sacrifice a bit of dps for fun because you know, PvE. And by PvE I mean mostly HoT events in (chaotic) groups. I don’t mean soloing, I don’t mean dungeons, and I don’t mean fractals.
Few things:
- I don’t like GS. Just can’t stand the “1” sound anymore. And “5” feels useless in PvE compared to WvW.
- No Focus either.
- No Shield. I really dislike the “4” animation. A clock shield? Really? Yea I get it, because Chrono. But I’m not a Swiss clock maker; tone it down.
Staff I’m undecided on.
Sword, Scepter, Torch, Pistol – all good. Wasn’t a huge fan of Scepter before but now that it received a buff I’m ok with it as well.
So.. weapons? Traits? Utility skills? Runes? Sigils?
What combinations of these would you say are fun in HoT?
And is there some “tank” version of Mesmer that would work well in this scenario and that would be fun? Anyone playing with max Toughness etc or it’s just pointless?

Same issue here, can’t log in.
Shadow: “You can hardly think of the elementalist downed state change as a buff. Elementalist easily has the worst downed state. They can turn into mist for one second”
Mist lasts for 3 seconds which is extremely long time to reach safety. It’s by far the best downed skill in WvW, no contest.
Mesmer I think is the best in the game, to much damage potential while downed while at the same time being time consuming to cap. Needs an overhaul, imo.
I think you lack experience. The normal mesmer downed state does nothing but move you 3 meters in random direction. Random direction. Often worse direction. How is this overpowered? And you always know which one is the mesmer because of triangle. This skill is also completely useless if your enemy goes into stealth, because the skill doesn’t work without enemy in range. It also doesn’t work always; if you teleport too close to where you were, enemy will finish you off anyway, with first stomp. And, I sometimes avoid using #2 mesmer downed skill because if you do use it, you might die since your ally will be rezing your clone instead of you. The only people who think mesmer #2 is a strong downed skill are inexperienced players, and you can’t balance the game around that.
What you’re talking about above is mesmer downed skill #3 which you almost never use as a mesmer (99% cases) because 20 seconds after you’re downed, you’re dead. There’s a huge difference between skill #2 and skill #3, and you cannot compare other professions skill #2 with mesmer skill #3, it’s completely pointless. Mesmer #3 does some damage.. wow big deal, it does some damage. It doesn’t rez you faster and in 99% cases it won’t make a difference anyway. I’d take elementalist #2 downed skill over both mesmer #2 and #3, any day. Now, I am not saying mesmer #3 isn’t a nice skill compared to #3 of most other professions, but it’s a skill you can use 20 seconds after being downed. This isn’t 1 v 1 arena. In WvW, being down for 20sec almost never happens, and when it does the skill is almost never a game changer. Compare that to ele #2 which can easily do two of the following: it can instantly move ele downed body behind the zerg, where ele gets instantly rezed by 50 allies; or, if defending a tower, it instantly puts you inside the tower where no one can damage you.
My ranking list of downed states in WvW:
1. Ele
…
5. Thief
…
10. Everyone else
Kneemin, I don’t know on what server you play, I assume it’s NA one, because on EU servers people don’t flock to the downed player en masse again and again while you’re showering AoE from above. You may kill 1 or 2 players who tried to help someone but the other 50 will meanwhile get rezed without any issues.
You’re trying to use an exception as a rule. For every player you kill because he tried to help a downed player, there are 200 players getting rezed without any problem, without any downside. And that’s the issue.
Downed doesn’t cost anything, the rezing is practically instantaneous. Ele downed skill after patch is just overpowered in WvW. I heard people say Mesmer downed state is strong, which is funny since I play as a mesmer and consider it one of the weakest. When I down other mesmers their downed state is no issue if you know how to play, while all other downed states annoy the hell out of me (warrior, guardian, necro, ele, thief). Mesmer downed state just means you need to walk few meters but you’re in full control of your character.
I find it funny how Desolation people keep boasting how they beat both French servers single-handedly, when the reason they are not behing both Arborstone and Vizunah is exactly the opposite: bad strategic and diplomatic play from the French servers who kept bickering at each other more than playing vs Desolation. It’s like Russians on BT and FS going at each other and ignoring Elona, except that Elona isn’t saying they single-handedly beat everyone; they know what was going on.
That does not mean Desolation in its curren’t state isn’t a strong server, but the reason you have so many points atm isn’t because you’re that good, it’s because French servers are that bad.
I find it amusing that the OP is worried about Tier 1 ending up as English speaking servers only.
Quite ironic too, as the two French servers currently in Tier 1 tried, and failed, to make it so only French servers were constantly in Tier 1.
Exactly. These 2 French servers should be the last ones complaining about English domination, and in 1 month time I don’t think any server who is as bad at strategy and diplomacy as these 2 French servers will be in top2 spots on EU or NA. WvW isn’t 1 on 1 war.
Oh wow this is brilliant!
But I am surprised everyone was organized and not even pugs went to cap the tower.
Downed State needs to go. Fast.
And to those who mentioned Thieves – they don’t kill anymore in 1,5sec because their signet was nerfed. And if you ever saw a decent Thief attack someone, what they do is down you, then go into stealth and finish you off. Downed state is not a problem for a Thief, it’s a problem for everyone else. If Thief is outnumbered he can run away. If a non-thief skilled player is outnumbered he can… uh do what? Try fighting? With downed state it’s 10x more difficult.
It’s true there is a rez sickness. It lasts few seconds.. In other words it’s completely pointless.
The problem is:
1. The speed at which ANet is solving WvW issues is so slow that as a GW1 customer I am really disappointed. With GW1 you bought the product and you got superb PvP (and PvE) right from the start. Nowdays GW2 is following the modern “buy now get later” product. Imagine if ANet said: “Hello everyone, here you have Halloween decorations but we will release all the Halloween quests and content in 1 month.”
2. Downed state is here to stay. Yes it’s bad design, especially in WvW. But what is ANet going to say? “Yes, we wasted time and resources on this, yes we admit it’s bad..”. Not gonna happen. People don’t admit they did a mistake. In PvE downed state makes sense because the design of Dungeons is such that most people are going to be one-shot all the time. So Downed State is there to prolong the agony and make it 2-shot.. just so it’s not that obvious how bad design is. In WvW it’s terribly bad, if I had to pick between orb hacks and downed state I’d choose removing downed state first. It’s that bad.
I play on Arborstone[FR]
Arborstone and Vizunah showed bad diplomacy and bad tactics this week, and should be out of tier 1. Both.
If T1 becomes english-speaking only, that’s because english speakers understand diplomacy and tactic. Some people think that WvW is 1v1. French people think WvW is 1v1v1. But for good tacticians and diplomats, WvW is 2v1.
I see Germans doing better than French in a few weeks.
Yes I agree, it’s on a huge WvW Sadness list which goes like this:
1. Invisibility
2. Downed State
3. Hacks
4. Nightcapping and Outmanned “buff”.
5. ALT-F4
6. Numerous minor issues.
Actually if you’re downed and Alt-F4 the next time you log in you’ll be dead and will thus be forced to pay to rez at a waypoint (assuming you don’t wait around for someone to rez you). So there is still a potential cost associated.
That’s how newbies do it. Pro’s do it like this:
You enter WvW from Lion’s Arch which means that in the event of ALT-F4 you end up lying on the floor of Lion’s Arch. You can then:
1. Get rezed almost instantly by a horde of players in LA (you should be near Trading Post).
2. Get rezed instantly (literary) if you select the nearest waypoint, at zero repair cost / zero waypoint cost.
Enjoy.
In every game, offline or online, you are penalized for failed connection. And for a good reason. This is the only game I know, ever, that rewards disconnects (you don’t pay repair cost and you deny your opponent a reward).
Have you ever seen anything fixed in WvW? ALT-F4 is here to stay.
You should be doing Halloween stuff anyway, go farm some candy corn. That’s fun. Why would you kill other players when you can swing your cool mining picks on static piles of candy corn, which always give badges.. i mean, candy. What you can do then with it is buy some cool mummy or zombie tonics. It’s really fun. It turns you into ugly two-legged creature, who wouldn’t want that. Then, you can also visit various areas and carve pumpkins. I really recommend this, the only thing that’s more fun in todays online entertainment is fighting Tequatl the Sunless. It’s just amazing how much adrenaline one gets from using a ranged weapon and clicking “1” on a skillbar. And then there’s a cliffhanger.. for a moment, you don’t know who will win, the zerg or Tequatl. There should be betting ingame where we could bet on the outcome.
Anyway, in WvW you’re just killing some invisible people, and even if you kill them with ethereal weapons they use ALT-F4 magic to disappear. And people cheat; without buying Witch’s costume they fly around nevertheless with orbs n stuff, it’s just not fair towards paying customers who have to buy Witch’s costume to fly. But most of the time it’s just like fighting Tequatl the Sunless – except much less profitable.
The relation is: WvWers don’t want to play on PvE servers because it’s bad for winning and also WvW population that actually fights.
If you were interested in WvW, which server would you pick:
1. Server where 20 people jump puzzles and 20 fight
2. Server where 40 people fight
Nightcapping isn’t, but transfers themselves are.
WvW is splitting servers into PvE and WvW servers. This is a good thing. “Balanced” population across all servers is just horrible.
I am here right now standing in one of the Piken Square borderlands and there are more people (enemy players) doing jumping puzzle than fighting outside. I even saw a train of a dozen of them.
Why exactly would anyone slightly interested in WvW want to be on a server where players prefer to jump from one rock to the other instead of actually fighting? These players should massively abandon PvE servers and focus on few worthwhile WvW servers. That’s it. More fun for everyone.
Don’t complain guilds and players are leaving your server for WvW one. If you’re a PvE player you shouldn’t care, and if you’re a WvW player you should join the train, not preach to others how they should jump puzzles in borderlands instead of fighting.
I would try to point out in a clear and simple way the options Anet has to fix a broken RvR* system. Anet made an amazing work with zone environments and how the pointing system work right now is very well thought. The problems which making this part of the game broken are pointing out below.
I agree with option 1 as it is fair. Remove the labels and borders and everyone is free to play whichever server they feel like. As for the con, it will eventually disappear as no one likes long queue and will definitely transfer. Not a problem there.
I play from a totally different continent with my friends. Option 2 will totally separate people like us from our friends. IP lock is discriminating. You run out of solution and just cut the server off from the rest of the world. I can see where your frustration comes from the night capping. I totally understand that but option 2 is definitely not a solution.
And I like the idea for strict transfer application.
ATM every single matchup is determined by who has the best off-peak crew. Sucks.
ATM the losing servers lose almost all interest after the weekend is over because they have absolutely no chance of a comeback. Sucks.
I like the idea for a second round or middle break. Since the match-up is decided in 2 weeks, there can be an all capture point reset after a week so that it gives a chance for the rest to catch-up, much like a round 2.
Raap: “, we vastly outplayed both servers in primetime”
Just curious, what do you consider primetime here? Did you outplay Blacktide 6-7pm CET?
Actually, that’s not quite true Devinchi. As a solo player you can do tons of things:
- You can destroy underwater stuff, as well as make it operational.
- Kill dolyaks.
- Position yourself between enemy spawn/camp and their current zerg location, which means as enemies keep traveling one by one to zerg location you can kill them, and thus do far more than 10 people defending a Tower and just exchanging hits from the battlements, without killing anyone. And yet these people will be getting 2 silver every 3min even if they don’t kill anyone, even if they don’t destroy siege engines. Just for “tagging”.
- Stall groups of people. For example, I used to stall 5-10 enemy players for 10+ minutes underwater. Even if I don’t kill anyone, just the fact that several enemy players are chasing you means several enemy players are effectively out of battle.
- If someone joins you, two people in good gear can take Supply Camps without a problem. You don’t need a zerg of 30.
I’ve seen plenty of zergs that are just overkills. Everyone following 1 single Commander and taking objectives slowly, when half of these people could’ve spread on the map and taken at least 2x more objectives. Overkill zergers in no way contribute more to the team (or to anything) than solo players. I have semi-AFKed in some zergs because the only thing I had to do was stand in the circle to get silver for capturing towers and keeps. It in no way matters whether I was AFK or not, but if few of us went elsewhere on the map we could’ve done a lot.
There are solo players who aren’t contributing to the team effort, and there are zerg players who aren’t really contributing to the team effort. And you know what? Who cares. Especially these days when barely any server has a queue. You’re like to have anyone logged in.
I read in the forums someones theory that badges you get depend on how many people that enemy killed. The more I play the more I think this is true.
Sadly, this again means zerg is the best way to play WvW in just about every way. No tactics, just bring in the numbers and play it like PvE.
I have today killed several people who were running to reinforce their siege of our tower. I was intercepting them and cutting enemy man supply. I think I got a total of zero badges and then just gave up because I refused to zerg. When I zerg I get badges but whatever for? PvPing versus invisible mobs? In a very laggy environment? Always staying at max distance and being limited to few skills? I’m not the only one not having fun, and not feeling rewarded, in todays WvW. It seems most servers are witnessing drastic reduction in population.
SEAR is founded recently. After spending some time in WvW, SEAR founders decided to form an auxiliary team to supplement what the zerg lacks. We play as support role; supplement any force that requires the aid, re-take sentries that are taken away from us and raid supply camps. We move in compact group, enough to slip through enemy forces, raid their supplies and cut them off.
Don’t like how guild leaders are barking orders at you?
We are semi-hardcore players and we play however we like because we enjoy it. We do not like strict regulation so there will be none. You will not be told off just because you are having barbecue drake, or socializing with the quaggans during WvW, so long as you share.
The reward only matters when you enjoy your journey.
SEAR is recruiting Officers and Members.

I couldn’t even see myself today. Had to relogin to solve the issue.
I had to say it but I had more fun “WvWing” in 15yr old browser game.
Most of the stolen orbs (if not all?) from what I’ve seen were done by Seafarer refuge who went on a personal immature crusade. I’m not going to blame a server to whom that 12yr old transferred just to spite others. He can’t even speak German.
Except teaming up with Elona last time, I’ve never had any issues with Kodash. They fight honorably and respectfully (at least from my experience).
On the other hand Desolation.. not. Whenever members of their guild Envy kill someone, they dance on corpses and trash like that. Which is especially sad considering they only manage it because of numerical superiority.
I had same negative experience with Baruch Bay where a lot of people did that as well.
Heritage male human light armor changes when going in-out of water.
Front middle of the coat gets messed up. Those buttons/pearls change.
Unequipping and reequipping the chest armor “fixes” the issue, but has to be done all the time.
And just to add:
There is also ugly red “spine” line at the back of the coat on most if not all graphics settings. Not visible while standing still but visible while moving, especially in some zoom settings.
In WvW same thing happens now.
They added some separation between main spawn camp and the rest of the map. Two issues:
1. Sometimes the rest of the map “loads” instantly after exiting camp. Sometimes there’s concept art loading screen that frozes the game.
2. Players are rotated 180 degrees after exiting camp and have to turn around to continue walking. As in, it’s impossible to “R” (autorun) to the battlefield. If this is to fight bots, I’d rather have bots than this because it’s annoying for everyone.
