Some people are just insanely jealous. The casuals want everything handed to them right now – gold, legendaries, e.t.c.

“I want everything at the tip of my fingertips with zero effort”

Which is exactly what 3rd party programs like GWSpidy do.

Chew on that irony for a bit.

I’m not sure how allowing 3rd party programs access to in-game information, such that other players can gain an in-game advantage via automated analysis of the Trading Post (which may or may not be negatively impacting the game economy) be considering botting.

/sarcasm

You mean going to the website and sorting after margin? Sounds like rocket science so only a small crowd of the gw2 players can do it. And that small crowd must use bots and scripts for sure to do so!

Yeah, and Goldman Sachs is using E-trade for all their operations…

You understand that it’s extremely likely that the real robber barons of the TP are using their own, more complex programs to analyze the TP and take advantage of it from there, right?

If the information is attainable, people with the correct talents are going to take advantage of it. And with access to the information, they can essentially automate analysis piece, which gives them a huge advantage over people who aren’t relying on third party tools.

Entire economy pegged to Ectoplasm price?

in Black Lion Trading Co

ironzerg.3196

Reading about the snowflakes got me thinking: Is having the entire GW2 economy virtually tied to one item, Globs of Ectoplasm a bad idea? Essentially the value of everything is pegged to the value of Ectoplasm.

Think about it: Every single desirable end-game item requires Ectoplasm and LOTS of it. They are literally are more valuable than gold. As different ways to generate Ectoplasm are discovered, the effects tend to ripple downward through the economy. Just take a look at what happened to Mithril this week, for example.

And the problem is, as new content is created, new recipes are added, as well as more “creative” ways to use the tools given to us (Salvage Kits, Mystic Forge), the chance that loopholes are going to be created becomes immense.

My question is, with all the other end-game crafting materials available, is Ectoplasm even necessary? Are we looking at long-term issues as long as Ectoplasm remains the “universal” currency for the end-game of GW2?

Any thoughts?

@Fabsm I guess hammer has changed since head start (or was it the open beta few days before head start) because the third attack used to lock me in place. And afaik the third hit is still at least 2 seconds cast? That’s enough for me to run away because if I’m not going to whirl I usually stay as much away as possible. Yep that costs me few misses every now and then but it’s worth it!

Yes, it’s changed. The third attack DOES NOT root you (none of the attacks in the 1 chain do). And the third hit is a 1.25 second cast. The first two are 0.5 which is the EXACT same speed as the Greatsword.

EDIT: And and you can dodge in between the 2 and 3 hits of the hammer chain 1, and still land the third hit without interruption. AFAIK you can’t dodge during Whirling Wrath.

ironzerg.3196

First, some facts. The first two swings of the hammer are both 1/2 second…which is EXACTLY the same as the first two swings of the greatsword. Yes, the second hit is a 1.25 second cast, but:

a) you can continue to move while doing it
b) the symbol and damage hits even if the target or yourself move out of melee range

Plus, that hit is extremely hard and it gives me a near permanent 33% damage reduction. What that means is I can add more +precision and +crit% to my gear and still be more survivable than your standard GS wearer.

Hammer hits just as hard as the greatsword, with significantly better built in survivability. That means gearing for better DPS which nets out to much, much harder hitting.

But anyway, I love seeing these “hammer sucks, need buffs” threads, because anything else will make it pretty ridiculous.

Whatever, though…I’m perfectly happy to let those greatsword users “spin to win” and think they’re awesome.

ironzerg.3196

I’m not sure I understand your point, Star Ace. I’m not berating the OP for choosing a suboptimal build. I’m reminding him that the build he’s asking for doesn’t exist. There’s no such thing as a Support Guardian, not in the stereotypical sense of an MMORPG Healer. If you try to build like one, you’re severely limiting your potential.

GW2 is built in a way that severely discourages focusing entirely on boons and heals. You are expected to go toe to toe with your enemy and deal damage, so it’s always a good idea—regardless of your build—to have some good offensive stats (power/crit/condition).

If you don’t want to do that, that’s fine. It’s your playstyle. And you can probably clear most PVE encounters regardless of your build. I’m just assuming that since the OP asked for advice, he wants a good build. And every decent build that emphasizes support skills carries a good deal of damage too.

Yes, I do come across a bit of a jerk, so thank you to Eveningstar for putting it in much nicer terms across his last two posts.

Tank. Support. Healing. These are all adjectives than can be used to describe different aspects of a build, but they’re not “roles”. GW2 system, in my opinion, strongly discourages you from taking a group “role”. If you do, you’re automatically shoe-horning yourself into a less effective overall build simply by your mindset. That’s my bottom line, and I will not stray from it.

Most threads I see that start with “100% support” really mean, “Gosh darn, I love healing and want to be a healer”. They’re dishonest in that way, simply because there is no way to be a focused healer as a Guardian in GW2. The system simply does not reward that kind of play. In fact, it punishes it.

In other MMOs, specializing in a particular role is done because the Trinity system rewards specialization. It’s much more effective for one person to specialize in heals, one person to specialize in tanking and three people to specialize in DPS. But that’s simply not the case in GW2, because these roles DO NOT EXIST.

You have to change your mindset as to how you approach a build. My beef with the Support build above is the logic for why it should exist is inherently flawed.

The flawed logic is “I should build to be support, because that will make my group more effective.” That’s wrong. You will make your group LESS effective.

The correct logic is “My build has good levels of Damage and Survivability. Now how can I improve my value to the group by adding more support to my build.”

This thread is a great example of the first flawed logic.

Brutality’s AH Hammer thread (to use only one example) is a great thread showcasing the second logic. Eveningstar’s thread on general build concepts as an introduction to the Guardian is another. There’s a reason why we don’t have a support/healer Guardian build stickied, or even very active.

If your build concept is based around the first, flawed logic, you’ll simply come out with a less than optimal build that makes groups less effective. If you want to play that way, simply because you love the staff, you love seeing green numbers (regardless of their usefulness), then that’s fine. That’s how you play…but don’t try to pass it off as being an effective way to contribute to a group.

Ooops…went back to being mean again. Sorry!

What's the most toughness a guardian can get?

Support Guardian Fractal Builds?

in Guardian

ironzerg.3196

One downed player can chain react into a wipe very quickly…

Here’s my final point.

This is what you are every single fight if you’re not contributing in a meaningful way to the groups overall damage. You are the dead weight of a downed player.

Every class is perfectly capable of surviving via their own means in dungeons. This is not WoW and you do not need a person “dedicated” to keeping other people alive. All this makes you is that “downed player” in every single fight, who’s not contributing.

To be clear, I use a variation of Brutality’s AH Hammer build. I am bringing a ton of damage and AOE to the guild as well as:

- 100% uptime on protection, a 33% damage reduction via my shouts and symbols, which ultimately mitigates far more damage than any healing from your staff.
- Stacks of might via Empower and crits (currently 45% crit rate on my hero tab)
- Stacks of stability, retaliation, regeneration and protection from my shouts, with very high up times on all those buffs.
- Extremely high personal survivability, which means I can jump into the pack of bad guys and take hits my teammates don’t
- Worse case, I can ALSO slot a staff or Tome of Courage, and jump in with a few quick heals at nearly the same effectiveness as your “support” build, if and when they are needed.

But you know what? They rarely are, because my contribution to the team in terms of buffs, damage and survivability help keep the encounters manageable and under-control. And that’s what you need to be an effective player.

So, I guess I’ll leave you with one final, final point.

You are trading off way more overall effectiveness for a marginal increase in what you call “support”. This, in my opinion, makes you more of a liability to the group than a boon, and you should highly, highly reconsider a build that maximizes all the talents a guardian can bring to the group, which includes boons, survivability, healing AND damage, and not nerf yourself because you can’t let go of this fantasy that people have “roles” in GW2.

There are no roles. There are no healers. There are no tanks. There’s only players, and what they bring to the table…and as it stands, your build ideas bring very little.

Support Guardian Fractal Builds?

in Guardian

Posted by: ironzerg.3196

I also provide a tons of significant damage boosters. With large groups of enemies, I can generate 20 stacks of might on teammates, for instance. 12 from #4 on staff, and then 1 for every crit I land… That extra damage I’m providing on teammates more than makes up for the lack of DPS on my part.

It doesn’t.

And you’re not generating consistent 20 stacks. Your crit rate as posted is only 4%. So Empower is essentially useless for you.

And with the staff, you’re doing next to no damage. Your symbol is on a long cooldown, as well as Orb of Light, which is your only other source of healing outside of battle presence, which again only ticks in a 600 radius.

So, I’m asking, where does all that healing and support come from? Because I’m not seeing it.

All I’m seeing is another lousy “support” build that is more than likely being carried by the other four group members, who have to work harder to make up for some Guardian who who thinks he can be a healer.

And second, to DreamOfACure who pointed out Tome of Courage, again you have a skill that’s on a 90 SECOND CD and a 20 second duration with a some spells that heal, but that hardly makes you a healer. And even then, I can take that elite on ANY build and be more group effective than any dedicated “heal” or “support” build.

And yes, I apologize if I’m coming across a little strong here, but enough it enough. We have too many people putting together too many useless “100% support” builds which only make the rest of the group have to work that much harder.

Enough is enough, guys. You ARE NOT a healer.

Support Guardian Fractal Builds?

in Guardian

You want to help support your teammates? Then help kill things faster.

It’s such a waste to focus on healing…you completely kitten your ability to do damage (the staff is almost worthless for DPS), which means your teams has to work harder to kills things, things stay alive longer and do more damage to you and your teammates.

And the truth is, you won’t be able to do enough “emergency” healing to save someone’s life. Sure, you’ll keep a steady stream of +HP coming in, but it won’t be enough to save someone’s bacon.

Go read Brutality’s AH Hammer thread…that’s about as good as it’s going to get if you want to place a really nice balance of damage, support and survivabilty.

But otherwise, remember…THERE ARE NO HEALERS in GW2, no matter how much you want to fake it.

Wait? What? How is having nearly 100% uptime on a 33% damage reduction opening yourself up to A LOT more damage.

Every time I’m in a group with another Guardian, and I see them “spin to win”, I laugh. The greatsword is great at giving players the illusion of damage and effectiveness, while still be far inferior to the hammer.

Guys, do yourself a favor and save the “spin to win” for the strippers. Man up and grab your hammer. With both hands.

The first and second attacks on skill one are 1/2 second, just like the warrior’s hammer. There’s a big difference between the third chain attacks, and reasonably so.

The third attack on the warrior chain does AOE damage.

The third attack on the guardian chain hits like a truck AND drops a symbol that does even more damage AND gives you 33% damage reduction AND creates a combo field.

That’s why it’s “slow”.

The guardian also has a huge edge thanks to our number 2 skill, which has a fast activation, a leap AND big AOE damage AND is a blast finisher. The only blast finisher the warrior has is their burst skill, with no combo fields on any of their skills.

In my opinion, the random cash chest is unethical because it unfairly taps into a person’s desire for new, shiney items by trying to incentivize them to spend more money gambling for the item that said item ends up being worth.

A more ethical way is to put the items up on the cash shop, for whatever price Arenanet deems fair, and allow customers to exchange their money for something value, based a true indication of the value of the item. And that’s another major complaint about the game. Ninety percent of the stuff in the cash shop is junk. Give us something valuable, and we’ll give you value for it.

Maybe this is Arenanet’s way of sneaking an apology into the game for the fans. Maybe not.

But what I think is relevant is the discussion how and why decisions to monetize the game are made, and the impacts it might have on a “pure” product. But it’s interesting, because prior to launch, most GW2 fansites were filled with posts that read somewhere along the lines of, “Anet! Shut up and take my money!”

There’s plenty of players out their who want nothing more than to give Anet as much money as possible, but perhaps it’s worth considering whether or not Nexon’s model for collecting such money is the right (or ethical) way to do it.

So, like many longtime fans, I was very disappointed with some of the new stuff that came our way in the latest update. I was angry at Arenanet, until a fellow guildie pointed out some very strange things in the Lost Shores update.

First, think of the name. Lost Shores. Lost. Obviously, many of us would agree that Arenanet is starting to lose it’s direction, but is that because they’ve lost control of their game? Keep reading.

Second, and I want to give credit to Maclav for pointing this out. Here are just a few “cries for help” in the latest update:

-A golem named BUY-4373 (4373 is a MS security error about remote attacks)
-An NPC named Subdirector Blingg
-A jumping puzzle named Under New Management
-A dungeon who’s anacronym is “Flavour of the Month”

Also, there’s now a position at Arenanet titled “Monetization Producer”, held by a person who was formerly a producer at Nexon. Nervous yet?

Finally, we have the Consortium, a new group of “traders” introduce to directly compete with the Black Lion Trading Company. We know that the BLTC has been Arenanet’s trademarked cash shop. Could the Consortium be a nod to Nexon coming in to take over?

Put on your tin-foil hats, folks. And maybe it’s time to level criticism where it’s really due.

EDIT: http://www.bizjournals.com/prnewswire/press_releases/2012/06/08/NY21443 – June 8th, 2012 Nexon aquires 14.7% of NCsoft, GW2’s publisher.

I like that my Guardian is encased in gleaming mithril and isn’t lost among the plated necros and elementalists. That’s my only (selfish) concern. Death Knights… shudder

Instead, you’re lost among the other plate classes that look almost exactly the same as you.

By mixing armor styles, you open up a huge door for character customization, and really allow players to get creative with how they express their character’s appearance.

More options means less chances for your character to “get lost” amongst the other players.

And again, it’s purely for looks. There’s no advantage given to a necro putting on a plate-armor look, so why does everyone assume that ever cloth class is going to instantly switch to all heavy armor, and vice versa?

When you click on an enemy, there’s a very clearly marked “class” designation. I would hardly say class identification would be a problem for any serious PvPer. Plus, I can easily hide helm and shoulders on my Guardian, and use a heavy armor set that absolutely looks “clothish” if I really wanted to, or if I thought this would give me any advantage in WvW.

The only part of the game where this might be an advantage would be sPvP, but you’re locked into very specific gear there anyway, so I don’t see why you couldn’t keep it this way, and let open-world armor sets be mix and match.

And on Anet’s part, it could be another source of revenue. Make “Exalted Transmuation Stones” they can sell in the cash shop for twice the cost of fine transmutation stones that’ll transmute across armor types. With the right cost attached, you can still keep it limited in scope, while still giving people the option to transmute pieces.

Spirit Weapons need some love.

The problem with Spirit Weapons is their up-time. If you invest heavily into Spirit Weapons, you’re kittening yourself when they’re not active, which is a lot of time.

What I’d do is:

1) Start the CD for when they’re summoned.

2) Stagged the CD times such that if you trait for 20% reduced CD and 50% uptime, the CD and the duration are equal, so that people who trait for SWs get 100% uptime.
