Decent laptop for GW2

Does anyone else have experience with MSI or Alienware laptops for GW2? I’m trying to find something on par with the ASUS G750JS, if not a bit more powerful since the G750JS is a few years old now.

No personal experience with MSI or Alienware laptops, but since you seem to be from the UK, you might want to check https://www.mysn.co.uk/ . It’s a medium sized german company famous for making great customizable laptops (and since ~1-2 years also gaming desktops) with excellent customer support. I just got my 2nd laptop there (first was back in 2012), I pruchased an U716 (desktop replacement, so mobility wasn’t important to me) and got it delivered two days ago- it runs beastly.
Might be worth for you to take a look at them as long as you’re still part of the EU

I’ll definitely give that a look, thanks!

And I’ll always be part of the EU in my heart and spirit!

I can also confirm that, having just gone through nearly 11 weeks of trying to get an older out-of-warranty ASUS ROG repaired, they are awful to deal with. I loved my ROG as a machine and it ran like a dream, but as soon as something went wrong it was an absolute nightmare deal with ASUS (uk) and their procedures has absolutely soured me to their products.

I’m in a similar situation as others—I read patch notes but missed the heads-up in part because, as a PvE player whose irl partner is on another server, I don’t WvW so skipped that part of the patch notes.

I don’t think I mind the change overall and I’m sure I’ll get to it once I make a firm choice, but it is a tad frustrating that, like others said, the warning about this wasn’t easy to find. Now I have a bunch of BoH that I’d been hoarding for GoB that are just kind of sitting in my wallet. Boo.

More “Hearts And Minds” bugs here.

We’ve been at this 2-3 hours now…

DCs everywhere at different points; there’s nothing wrong with our home network.

Sometimes gliders wouldn’t deploy.

We finally beat Mordremoth, and were trying to listen to what Trahearne was saying after the battle and the instance owner (me) was kicked suddenly so we neither got to hear the end of the story nor get completion for the rewards.

We tried again for the fourth or fifth time, we decided to try picking NPCs we hadn’t used before so we wouldn’t be bored and frustrated…and we got DC’d again during _more_content we hadn’t seen before and had to start over.

This turns out to be very frustrating, not because of the content itself, but because of bugs.

Nghhh… :/

Bug: Arrowhead Mini Doesn't Rollover

Maybe it just doesn’t know how? Sure, you’ve probably demonstrated it, but you’re not exactly shaped like an arrowhead. (I’m assuming there.)

Maybe you need to take it into the jungle and show it a real arrowhead, so it can see how it’s done. Of course, there’s the risk it will run off and join it’s brethren. But all babies must leave the nest eventually.

UPDATE!

I ventured out into Auric Basic and located my mini Arrowhead’s kin! I quickly encouraged my mini Arrowhead to go forth and socialise!

They came over and they all seemed to be bonding very well and I think my Arrowhead learnt a lot!

In fact it went so well that I found myself flattened by about four of them! It was great! I even took some photos which can be seen below!

However, despite my mini Arrowhead learning a lot about Arrowhead culture and socalising very, very well, it could not learn to roll.

Ah! Learning through seeing behaviour from it’s kind! I haven’t thought of this and it’s a great idea! I will try this.

You’re right of course that it may scamper off into the wild again, but this is a risk I’m willing to take if it might bring some roll into my little critter’s life!

This would even be worth risking one, two, or fifty broken bones as part of the process…

Thank you for the suggestion! I’ll report back if it’s successful!

I was wondering if they would have included the rolling as a part of the mini’s animation. Sad to hear it doesn’t.

(Even if I hate that cheap kitten zero-cooldown attack.)

Does it at least do the lazy butt-flop shockwave? Tell me the mini at least does that.

Alas, it does not.

It looks around quizzically, kind of like a drake. And wags its tail. All very slowly with it’s massive, silly, perpetual grin.

I don’t feel like that addresses the concern, but that’s probably the first thing people will say :/

Picture my excitement, if you will, when I discovered that the most bonecrushingly adorable, ridiculous saurian had arrived as a mini in the gemstore! If you cannot picture it, let me tell you: I have never bought something more quickly.

But I feel as though the memory of screaming “oh god why!” as a creature five times my character’s size happily flattens them via cheerful sideways tumble has been lost somehow…

To my distress, I discovered that something is wrong with my mini Arrowhead.

Let’s just say it is somewhat… roll-deficient. It’s lacking in the rolling department. It’s rolling capability leaves something to be desired.

You get the idea.

I’ve tried everything: positive reinforcement, threatening it, shrinking my character to make them more roll-on-able. Nope. Nothing. My mini Arrowhead simply will not roll.

Which leaves me able to draw only one conclusion: my mini Arrowhead is bugged.

Is anyone else had the same experience? Any work arounds? Better tips for training? Ways to coax my little spikeball into becoming the full-fledged bodyflattener I know it has the potential to be? Any input would be great.

I really wanted to enjoy this event but unforunately it seems to be trying to do too many things and not compensating effectively.

For new players, there’s no explanation and just a bunch of max-level characters rushing around trying to get hits on events in maps that are densely populated for short periods of time which makes them prone to DCing and lag. The rewards are also tailored to us max-level people, and while I really like the ability to get Season 1/Gem store rewards again through a non-gold/gems route this has, regrettably, been poorly executed.

For those of us caught in DC sweeps, either the rewards are less than they would have been or we get none at all (like others, I also got DC’d with stacks, lost them, made some back but got no reward at the end.)

I don’t understand why there couldn’t be a combination of the way rewards are given on SW (a chest at the end of each event with bonus chests here and there) and the Halloween/Wintersday events (farm particular areas/monsters who also drop the temporary currency.)

I really like the events themselves and the idea, but in its current state the event overall is inaccessible, stressful, and poorly conceived.

Very good suggestions right here. I especially like the RP chat suggestions because while I know a lot of RP goes on in emote chat that tries to take the general non-RP populous into consideration, it doesn’t really serve the RP part of GW2 that well.

I also agree that while the megaserver is great for general gameplay, it does isolate RPers and makes trying to find each other very difficult.

Anatoli Ingram acknowledged that RP is a component of GW2 for many players on the Hidden Arcana Revenant blog post, so it’s not like RPers are entirely below the radar. Judging by the members list of guildwars2roleplayers.com the RP community has over 11k members, so the group is not tiny. Some have obviously moved on, certainly, but many discussions of late revolve around how difficult it is to find RP out in the world since the megaserver has become a factor.

Maybe adding function on the LFG tool for RPers as well as a dedicated chat would go a long way to taxing people onto certain maps for RPing.

But in short, yes, I like some of these suggestions very much.

I had that problem long ago when I used the ingame screenshot options too, and no one knew how to fix it.

The best solution I can offer is to switch to an external program for screenshots. I personally use http://puush.me/ but there are many other options: http://alternativeto.net/software/puush/

However one thing to mention is that with puush they won’t be bmp files but instead will be png by default.

Thank you for the recommendations, I’ll look into them!

It’s just incredibly frustrating that something so fundamental might well warrant a third party program get-around when it was absolutely find one day and then changed for no reason the next. Very confusing and frustrating. :/

The actual file type doesn’t bother me too much, png or bmp is fine, it’s the reduction in quality that’s the biggest kicker for me.

I’d still be interested to know if anyone else has specifically encountered this after the Rev beta though and if any solutions have been found that don’t involved third-party programs.

Just like you have a right to be and have your opinions – so does he. He might be wrong or not – stop using the fact that you’re different as some form of magical shield.

The message seems to be: “what I like makes me morally superior”. It’s not enough for people to be tolerant, you have to agree & support & like. It’s hilariously hypocritical.

You tolerate pain, not people.

That aside, you also seem very uptight that I suggested someone take a moment to think. How curious. Maybe it was something you ate. I have heard peppermint tea helps with that.

That is a fine copy-paste job there, but several of these are superfluous synonyms/acronyms of one another. Further, many of these actually already exist in the game.

i don’t really get it… nothing against the lgbt community, have several friends who are, and legally i think they should have more rights, but why the need to put hot topic issues in a fantasy video game? In a game about unity and fighting dragons just seems like a good way to stirr up controversy and have more religion debates in trade chat and can see otherwise good people who just happen to have a religious belief getting banned just for having a discussion (even if in a polite/friendly manner)

why not put obama or hillary flyers up, or crosses or other religious symbols ingame too? Thought the whole point of a fantasy video game was to escape reality.

bunny trail but… why do voters even care about social issues atm when we are billions or trillions in debt atm in the usa. everything else seems kind of irrelevant in comparison to the giant problem that isn’t going away.

again (just to make it clear and i dont get banned for even posting this lol) i support the agenda, but I don’t get the need for it in a game. let the politicians and preachers fight in real life, ingame i just want to fight dragons and talk in trade chat without debates.

In my experience, anything that starts with “nothing against the lgbt community” is probably going to be against the lgbt community, just like anything that starts “nothing against black people” is probably going be racist.

I always hope to be pleasantly surprised, but I wasn’t this time, and I doubt I will be the next time either. :’)

To me might as well promote obamacare, or limited government, or christianity, or wiccans, or taxes, or other things that tend to upset people one way or another. I just don’t like people fighting over real life hot topics when I’m trying to have fun playing a game. That’s all i meant. If my friend comes out I will pat him on the back and say good for you bud But if 2 friends start fighting or arguing I will walk away since I don’t like confrontation.

“I have LGBT friends” does not actually make you exempt from saying troubling things against the community, just as you did in your earlier comment.

If you think you aren’t saying something against the LGBT community, let me tell you that you might want to reconsider.

Just like you have a right to be and have your opinions – so does he. He might be wrong or not – stop using the fact that you’re different as some form of magical shield.

I said that the above poster should re-evaluate if they believe they are not saying troubling things about the LGBT community. I didn’t tell them what to think, how to think, or what to say, I requested they take some time and think about how what they’re saying may not be as supportive of the LGBT community as they would like to think it is.

This is also not a discussion about unpopular opinions; LGBT people exist regardless of other people’s opinions, so it’s not a matter of having popular or unpopular opinions on the matter: We exist. Period.

If you’ve kept up with the certain gaming world contraversies recently, you should know where these concerns come from.

Personally, I don’t mind, it’s a minor NPC, isn’t going to get in my way.

This is what I’m afraid of too. Not the NPC himself, but the people who will fight a flame war over him. Just let him be whatever he wants and let the game be a game.

I will point out that those GW1 campaigns actually cost less than what is being asked for HoT and leave that at that.

…… If Revenant is that important to you, why do you feel you shouldn’t pay more?

Shortest answer, because I’ve rambled a lot in this thread already: I would like the option to play the content that is being strongly marketed to me when I pay money for it. HoT has a lot going on in it, but so much of the marketing and hype has undeniably been about this new class.

If I (or anyone else) decides not to play a Rev and decide instead to roll something else, fine, but for me it comes down to the fact that the option should be there when I’ve bought the product and not through me having to pay more on top of the product I’ve already just paid for.

Not saying one way or the other, just pointing out that the precedence lacks some equivalency. In those previous GW1 expansions, you literally had to pay more cash to unlock the slot for the new class. That isn’t really the case in GW2.

I also asked previously, what if instead, Anet offered some sales every now and again, leading up to and the first week of HoT release, that lowered the cost of character slots and inventory expansions?

Consider it a compromise. Even if you’re a new player, it might show some good will to use the gem store when specials are offered. Not only that, it’d definitely get some sales for players still on the fence about purchasing the expansion, allowing them to buy some slots if they might want to buy the expansion to play Revenant in the future. Inventory expansion slots would also help newbies but also could be useful to the less-rich vets who have a load of un-upgraded characters that they are taking into HoT content.

Would the sentiment that you’re not getting everything new players are getting be a factor for you or others? Or maybe the thought that vets need something exclusive is the culprit here?

I will point out that those GW1 campaigns actually cost less than what is being asked for HoT and leave that at that.

As for sales, yeah, they’re great! I love ‘em! I take advantage of them plenty, but _not when I’m already paying for the next part of the franchise._

Personally, as I’ve said in other comments, new players getting a good deal is not a problem for me. I like the idea of the bundle and I think it’s a great incentive, I’m not buttmad that as an established player I’m not getting the same as a new player, not at all. I am disappointed that as an established player it feels like I’ve been hyped up, gotten excited, wanted to throw my money at Anet, and then got to the pre-purchase page only to realise there’s not only small print for established players who want to try out one of HoT’s biggest selling features but that small print is actually something you need to read between the lines to find. So instead it feels like this:

$50 for the expansion + original game as a free bonus! (Some restrictions apply. Established players will need to pay an additional $10 for a character slot, delete a pre-existing character, or grind for gold or spend an additional $25 for a version of HoT that includes a slot and extra stuff! Sales on character slots may go on sale at some point, but since slots have not been on sale since Feb 2014 to suddenly have a sale on character slots now might be seen as shady and not in good faith. Either way, if you’re already playing the game you need to jump through some more hoops. Sry we ain’t sry! pls keep giving us money!)

I do love this game and I do love Anet and I don’t want extra goodies or special treatment for my time as an established player. I’ve gotten a lot for what I paid so I don’t feel like I’ve banked up secret reward points or something for spending money.

What I do think is that I shouldn’t feel like I need to jump through more hoops to access the shiny new content that has been marketed to me. It’s utterly bizarre and leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

Some of us truly have no idea why not getting a character slot/gems is an issue.

Whatever your opinion on deleting characters to make new ones, you must remember that that is a totally subjective matter that is going to feel like a much bigger slight to some people who care about the characters they have made in different ways than you might. (For those who do some roleplay, for example, characters make up individual elements of ongoing stories about which they care deeply.)

What’s factually true, however, is that ANet promised something to players at the PAX South announcement of HoT. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxLkfXwxLTs from about 16 minutes in). Within the first minutes of the announcement, Mike O’Brien had said that they did not want to produce an expansion that “invalidates all the work that you’ve put in to your existing characters” by forcing anyone to grind for higher level gear or to reach a raised level cap.

By ANet’s own words, then, spoken in the spirit of their original game manifesto, they wanted to honor the time and effort players have put into their characters thus far, even as the expansion was released. Asking anyone to delete a character in order to gain access to the expansion’s offerings obviously flies directly in the face of that.

And frankly, I think that seeing that suggestion glibly thrown around by some players is doing a tremendous amount to undermine the sense of friendliness and good will in the community—it creates bitterness and anger between us all by making it seem that some players want others to sacrifice their effort, time, and imaginative/emotional energies, while not acknowledging that they themselves would be outraged if it was suggested that they deleted something from their accounts that they had worked hard for and cared about.

If you want to understand why not getting a character slot is such a big deal, then think about some element of your account that you’ve worked hard to get and really care about, and think about how you would feel if it was suggested that you should have it stripped from your account and that you were acting “too entitled” if that upset you or you said it was unfair.

He is not referring to deleting a character. He is saying why are you ignoring the option you have of simply converting 140-150 gold to 800 gems and buy your character slot with no real money? Nothing about that is unreasonable.

That’s still grinding tho. Grind for it or pay real money, it’s still having to do something additional to access core HoT content.

Posh, you’d have to do the very same thing to enjoy a Dragonhunter if you haven’t got a Guardian yet your character slots are full. The issue of HoT content being something you have to obtain through additional actions isn’t an inherent flaw. To get to the jungle, you likely need to be lvl 80 and if you’re rolling a new character, you’ll need to reach that point somehow…

Funny thing is, I’m not opposed to buying characters slots and I’m not opposed to paying more than $50 for the expansion. If HoT weren’t marketing the Rev as a big part of the new content they were bringing to GW2, this wouldn’t be an issue, but it is being marketed as a big part and it is one of the areas of HoT that has been most hyped.

You’re saying that players shouldn’t feel disappointed that they don’t get access to the thing they’ve gotten hyped up about and shouldn’t be deflated when they’re told they’re not getting the full bang for their (50)bucks? I find this a very strange position to take, to be honest.

So if you pay for the expansion, then you are entitled to get use of the expansion without needing to pay an additional $10 on top of its sticker price to buy the character slot that will let you gain access to the new profession which is a substantial element of its advertised content.

No, you are not.

You are entitled to the ability to roll a Revenent into any character slots you may have available, just as you were able to roll any of the original eight classes into any slot you had available. You are NOT entitled to a free slot to put that character into, unless ANet says that you are.

This has been pointed out several times already, but I’ll reiterate.

Whether you like to admit it or not (or even know), Anet has set a precedence in the past of providing a character slots equivalent to the new classes they released per campaign to allow players to get the most out of the new content they’ve released….

In that precedence, was it possible to purchase character slots in those previous campaigns with in-game currencies?

Honestly, I don’t recall when it became possible to purchase additional GW1 slots, but I think that is circumventing the point that if Anet is totting Rev as a key feature of HoT then it would be prudent to give equal instant access to that content, as par their previous gestures.

It’s easy to say “that was then and this is now” but irrespective of that, it is not asking for the moon to say that $50 should give new and established players means to try out the new content without one group needing to pay/do more for the same content. :/

If you previously had an account and attached a new campaign there was no demand to delete a character or buy a new slot: there was new content to access and you were given the means to access it right out the box whether you were a new player or a returning/continuing one.

If Anet did not have that history, this may not be such an issue, however it’s unfair to build up a world with historical ties to an old world and expressly appeal to a previous player base then feel shocked when they remember the company’s previous trends.

Honestly, you and others are acting like wanting to access content we’ve paid for straight out the box for the price we’re paying is like pre-established players are demanding a precursor because they’ve been around longer. THAT is entitlement, THIS is asking for EQUAL ACCESS TO CONTENT.

Under contract ArenaNet is offering Core + Expansion to every purchaser and only delivering Expansion to existing users.

Actually existing users can get exactly the same thing offered to first time buyers. Both get a new account with both core content and HoT included. The existing user, of course, has the option to forgo, at their discretion, the new account in favor of linking to an existing account.

I wouldn’t expect many existing users to choose not to link accounts, but the option to have exactly the same as the first time buyer is there.

Good point.

Although, to be fair to some of those criticizing the pricing, this still means that veterans aren’t offered anything for their years of loyalty. (Well, ‘nothing’ aside from a great game that has given them hundreds or thousands of hours of entertainment, which is probably how NCSOFT and most other game publishers would think of it.)

Why do I keep seeing this argument? Veterans should NOT be offered anything for years of loyalty. This game doesn’t work on that model; it’s not sub based or pay as you go. Someone that plays 5 minutes has as much impact as someone that player 5 years. If there is any patronage (and I don’t think there should be), it’s to the people that buy gems.

I think a few versions of this argument are floating around and what veterans and not-quite-new players (see the link I posted elsewhere in this thread) are saying is being taken as “I’ve been playing since forever, Anet OWES me more stuff than a new player!” when actually I think the argument from pre-established players isn’t about being entitled to things or given more than new players.

What it seems to me is this: if you pay for HoT you should have access to the content being offered for the price you paid. I.e. vets shouldn’t have to pay out more (be it through real money, grinding for gold, or deleting an existing character) for an extra character slot to access the content of the revenant.

It’s honestly not about wanting more than new players for having played longer. Personally, I’ve been playing since GW1 just before they brought out Factions. I have spent money in the gem store and I play often. I don’t want extras or special treatment for that and I WANT new players. But I also want to play the content that’s being released for the minimum amount. $50 should give access to that, but for me it’ll be $60 because I’ll need to buy a slot. And no, I won’t grind for gold to trade for a slot, I’m grinding for gold for other things.

I don’t think it’s an unreasonable ask that there be a principle of equal access to content straight out of the HoT “box.” I’ve bought slots in the past, so I’m not adverse to giving Anet my money, and were it not for feeling like I need to shell out extra to access content I’d be buying the Ultimate edition, personally.

I don’t think, as a vet, that I’m “owed” extra stuff for my investment, but I do think as a customer I should get equal access to the product I’m paying for as a brand new player.

I actually feel like your post has some overlaps with a point made by this person: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/hot/Wooden-Potatoes-reviews-the-preorder/first#post5169947

There’s so much focus on brand new players that relatively new players and older players alike are getting pushed to the wayside. Retention is just as if not more important than bringing in brand new blood. If the new blood doesn’t want to stick around, what’s the point?

I hope Anet do address this because it’s a real shame this kerfuffle has left you feeling this way, OP. As a GW1 player, this is the opposite of how I’d want newer players to feel in GW2

The silence is taking a long time. I think there’s only one way to go. I would expect to see a message like this very soon:

“Greetings fellow inhabitants of Tyria,

Earlier this week we opened pre-orders for our exciting new expansion, Heart of Thorns. We are really excited about this expansion – not only does it have the new Elite classes, only a few of which have been fully revealed so far, but it also introduces a whole new world for you to explore. We have many more teasers and spoilers planned over the next few weeks that will let you share our excitement about the expansion.

That said, we here at Anet have been aware of the voice of the community on the pricing or content of the expansion packs we’ve offered. We feel that the prices we listed are appropriate for the content we are releasing, and certainly comparable to the other releases we and other gaming companies are producing these days. We have a fantastic user base, and many of you have been as hyped as us for the expansion. Some of you have been with us from the original Guild Wars, including even some of our beta testers of that game. You veterans form the core of our userbase, and are are often the most vocal supporters for us. Or, in this case, vocal in your discontent. We do want to have you continue your journey with us through Tyria, after all, we have dragons and lore you haven’t even seen yet (are you there, “Bubbles”?).

After a great deal of internal conversation, we’re making the following change to all expansion packs: All packs will now include 800 gems, which is the current cost of a character slot in the game. Are you one of our players who has a maxed character in every slot? You can use these gems to buy yourself a new spot to roll that exciting new Revenant. Are you a newer player and still have open slots? Use these in our Gem Store to buy many quality of life and appearance items – we’re sure you’ll find something you’ll like! For our user base who want to buy the Ultimate Edition, you’ll now get these gems in addition to the ones you already are receiving as part of the package. We expect you to be the snappiest dressed Revenants in Maguuma!

Once again, thank you for your passion around our world. We are on a shared journey and look forward to you joining us in the newest chapter, Heart of Thorns!"

If this is Anet’s response to this situation, I’d not only be happy to pre-purchase now, I’d go ahead and get the Ultimate edition and I know I’m not the only one. I know for some the price of the standard is tad high so the Ultimate is unthinkable for them, but a good-will gesture of 800 gems across the board would at least mean people have equal access to content right out of the HoT “box” and to me that’s the real crux of the matter.

Honestly, I think this kind of gesture would soothe a lot of this anger (though of course not all of it) and get a lot of players back of the hype train again. It would also send a very strong message from Anet: we want new players but we also value our current players and are listening.

anet pls.

New feature announcements from Colin (Dragonite ore eater, ascended stat changes) look like they’re being used to quell the riot. So I don’t think pricing will change.

Well, personally speaking I’ve not said that the price should be reduced or ever thought it would. To my mind, making that $50 minimum stretch out over more (and not even a lot more, 800 gems as suggested) would be the wisest call they could make.

Just saying at the outset that I generally really like WP’s stuff and think he’s sharp and insightful, so this is in no way meant as a flame, but:

I’m really miffed at his glibly dismissive “just delete one of your old characters” reply to concerns about character slots. That attitude, which seems prominent with many (I assume hardcore and/or veteran) players and with other youtubers (e.g. BogOtter), completely takes for granted the difference between their own gaming experiences and the experience of those newer players they claim to care about.

Personal experience: I bought the game in January and I’ve been playing it A LOT since then. It is the only MMO I’ve ever played or ever want to play. I’ve got three lvl 80 characters, one of whom I only just got to lvl 80 a about two weeks ago, one lvl 75, and one lvl 30 (that leaves no free slots).

I’m still working on outfitting my lvl 80s (just made my first ascended weapon \o/), exploring builds, trying new things out, and leveling my remaining characters. I’ve put time and work into them and I have plans and goals for what I want to do with each one. These characters are not old stale things that are sitting around collecting dust—they’re what I’m in the midst of working on right now! So the offhanded suggestion that I should just delete one to free up a slot? Is a bit like suggesting I should trash 1/5 of the effort and time I’ve put into the game since I got it!

Think about how tremendously de-incentivizing that is!

I was in the midst of becoming quite a loyal and invested player of this game. Now I’m honestly enjoying the game less, feeling like there’s this weird expectation built into ANet’s HoT pricing strategy that I should delete some character—potentially the character I’m currently working on at any given moment—to gain access to a character slot for the rev in HoT. It really sticks in my mind, despite how I try to ignore it.

WP suggested, fairly enough, that we should focus on the $50 price tag of HoT and whether it’s too much.

He doesn’t want to acknowledge, however, that for many of us (who don’t have an old “trash” character to delete for whatever reason) the total price of HoT will turn out to be $60 in practice, not $50, if we want access to the full content of the expansion—i.e. access to playing the new profession which ANet has been hyping so much. (The perception might be flawed, but given the relatively sparse info that’s been released about other elements, and the large production of hype around rev, the profession does seem to be a really substantial portion of what the expansion is offering.)

If so many people feel like $50 it potentially too expensive for this expansion, then I would say that $60 certainly is!

Regardless, though, (and even if you think it’s somehow “whiny” or “entitled" of me to feel like I ought not to have to scrap like 1/5 of the effort I’ve put into the game thus far in order to access the full content of HoT for its $50 price tag) the suggestion that I delete a character I enjoy and have worked on hard flies in the face of what ANet said when they first announced HoT: that they did not want to make an expansion which, to quote Mike O’Brien, “invalidates all the work that you put in to your existing characters”!

The bottom line: when they say $50 with no character slot, for me and many others, it’s really a total price of $60 for full access to HoT’s content. But we’re seeing them (and, sadly, WP along with them) trying to sweep that number into the shadows “Pay no attention to the price tag behind the curtain!”-style, and I do feel that, as a customer, I am being dealt with in very bad faith because of it.

This is a really valid point and I think highlights the “We want new players!” versus the reality of having and KEEPING new players.

For you then, HoT would have not long been announced so you bought the game, got into the game, enjoyed the game, and now are poised to continue the journey, but even as a new player your time IN the game so far isn’t being acknowledged and I really agree that being told to just “scrap” a character you’ve put time and energy into is quite insulting.

From what I can see, this current set-up really benefits brand new players, devalues new but not brand new players, and isn’t very generous to long term players.

So which of your characters will you delete to play the Revenant? Or will you purchase the deluxe so you can get the extra slot or pay for the gems to get it. Existing player are not getting same value in fact in most cases are being forced to spent more.

This. Plus, some people are noting that on some accounts there are issues with deleting characters to free up slots, so even the “free” slot route isn’t an option for everyone.

Largest flaw in this whole theory: it’s not an equivalent value. It doesn’t cost Anet ten dollars to give a new player an account. It just costs whatever it does to activate the account and keep them on them on the servers.

The $50 will go to the same places it usually does: development time, advertisement, the usual business. GW2 vanilla does not cost 20 percent of HoT’s budget. That’s absurd.

This in all likelyhood costs very little for Anet at this point, and as such, even if GW2 vanilla was not included with the expansion, we would not see much if any impact on the final price.

This expansion would cost the same, with or without new players getting a GW2 account.

And seriously, if the worst thing they do is favour new players a bit, you really gotta see how bad it gets in the really scummy MMOs out there. This ain’t a mobile cash grab, this is just people getting worked up over nothing.

Hell, I wish more companies let new players the vanilla game for buying the expansion.

I want new players to get a good deal, but not at the expense (be it financial or emotional, because each have value in both senses of the word) to long-term players.

It’s not about favouring “a bit,” it’s the impression that longterm investment is less important. And that feels nasty, which does impact my desire to shell out cash as a longterm player.

Honestly, for a couple of days now I figured I was going to treat myself today by throwing some money into the gem store. This news about HoT has actually altered my desire to do that today, so while it’s good to encourage new players it’s prudent to consider the impacts on established players too.

And saying “well it’s better here places than places with give bad experiences” is like… Well, yes, obviously. Which is why I play GW2 and not those games. If I wanted that kind of experience as a customer I would be putting my money there, not here. To be happy it’s not as bad here as other places is just counter-intuitive; a better experience should be what’s strived for, not a happiness that it could be worse :/

Completely agree.

If the purchase page had started with $50 that includes HoT and 1 Character Slot, by the time I’d read along the options and got to the Ultimate edition I’d be like “YES ANET TAKE MY MONEY! GIMME THOSE EXTRAS AND THE GEM DISCOUNT” because it would actually feel like a really, really good and exciting deal. But as things stand, I’m feeling the complete opposite. And I say that after being hyped as all get out for HoT since it was announced at PAX.

I’m not adverse to spending money on this franchise—I had two GW1 accounts which both got kitted out with Factions, Nightfall and EotN (some of which Collectors editions) on the release day of each. But to a long term player, not just of GW2 but of the series, this is an incredibly disappointing move and leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

It’s a giantkittenand slap in the face. Whoever was responsible for dreaming up this marketing plan should be given a kick.

Sadly, yes. I don’t feel like I’m a knee-jerk kind of person and I try to be very aware of acting entitled or unreasonable. But this time, yeah, I do feel slighted. And as a dedicated player, that’s not only nasty, it’s bad business.

I can think of better ways to pay money to get myself slapped in the face than this and actually enjoy it…
