I know it may hurt ArenaNet’s pride or something but, seriously, why have you not just implemented the Google search idea yet? Search has been pretty much unusable for as long as I can remember and even the most recent dev posts on this thread suggest that ArenaNet literally has no idea whatsoever why it’s not working. It’s pretty clear that the issue will not be resolved for a very, very, very long time (read: it will never be resolved). Please just implement Google search and be done with it. I’d rather have an in forum search that can target particular sections or threads but obviously ArenaNet is only capable of programming MMOs, not complicated stuff like forums.

Retaliation OWNING you? How about this fix?

dueled 3 guardians in wvw today with my P/D thief. I think I took some retal damage, but it wasn’t really an issue – they all spent most of the fight running. Really not seeing why a nerf is necessary.

I tell you why, cause travln cant do as good as you against guards, so he cry for nerf. Thats all.

actually my builds destroy them and i win about 4/5 times with 90% hp or more. dink. lol.

…. Then what the hell are you kittening about?

cluster bomb…..ricochet….caltrops…..death blossom…..unload…sneak attack…trick shot.

Unload seems like the only skill there that should be difficult for you when facing someone with a lot of retaliation, or maybe the traited sneak attack. I mean, you’re listing caltrops as a problem? Aren’t these used for condition builds where you’re usually hitting once then playing defensive? And death blossom? I’ve never seen anyone use death blossom against another player but I assume if they were they’d also be running a condition build that in no way requires spamming multiple hit abilities.

Really, just pay attention. Most thief builds seem to rely on burst attacks that swing very few times for upwards of 15k damage. Retaliation is not gonna do 15k damage back at you in 2-4 attacks. It seems like what you’re really saying is your build that relies on unload has a strong counter and you don’t like it.

You can actually keep several of them alive at once . . .

Are you sure about that? I’ve literally never had more than 1 up at a time no matter how many thing around me I’m killing. The only way I can imagine missing this feature is if there’s a cooldown of some sort for summing a 2nd or 3rd.

How to kill thief?

in Necromancer

Posted by: joshisanonymous.5270

joshisanonymous.5270

I’m guessing you have a condition build so:

1) Drop all but your fear mark in a triangle shape and stand in the middle.
2) Pop DS when they attack you then do 5>3.
3) Try to drop your stakitten on them at the end of the first fear.
4) They’re probably dead.

If they get back into stealth after (2), hit your DS 4. If they get back into stealth by using Shadow Refuge or Black Powder, place your fear mark there. Probably dead at this point after either of these moves and if not, just keep dropping marks either where you’re standing or where they just stealthed at/are likely to walk.

Except for those rare well played thieves, they’re pretty easy to kill. They only have 2 decent condition cleanses which they don’t all use. The cleansing while stealthed thing only gets rid of 2 max per stealth but you can still easily apply more through marks while they’re stealthed or hit them with DS 4 while they’re stealthed to keep the pressure (they only have like 16k hits max with 0 toughness usually). You should have more problems keeping them from running away than keeping them from killing you. Luckily many of them have no idea how to play defensively and will just keep trying to spam you to death, completely ignoring all their fight resetting abilities.

EDIT: Ok, apparently “staff five” (using the number 5 instead) is an expletive that gets censored. But that’s what (3) says.

Greater Marks

in Necromancer

joshisanonymous.5270

At first I thought, “Ok, 180 is still a decent size and I could probably live without my marks being unblockable,” then I started playing without Greater Marks and realized this tradeoff is pretty much terrible. 180 is really not much larger than before, making it very difficult to hit other players or to build up a zone of control. I even gave it a few days of play to see if I could adjust—and maybe I’m just a terrible player—but I’m still unable to make good use of marks without Greater Marks. Even simple uses like blocking a path or fearing a thief out of their Shadow Refuge are only somewhat effective/reliable. I get the feeling this was supposed to be a neutral change that potentially opened up more builds for people who wanted nothing else in the Death Magic line but it’s not working out that way at all for me. Are others feeling just fine with just the 180 radius marks?

Skill lag while no one's around?

in WvW

joshisanonymous.5270

So many people are complaining about skill lag and I’ve experienced this a bit when zerging. It didn’t both me a great deal because I was zerging and there were a billion people on the screen, making it mostly a spamfest anyway.

Yesterday I had a 1v1 with no other players in sight and I pretty much got obliterated because I couldn’t activate any utilities. Seemed weird but I figured maybe I was just not paying attention and kept getting interrupted or something. I head back to the WP where there are literally no other players, try to fire off a utility skill and nothing. It took a good 10 seconds of spamming the skill before it finally fired.

I was under the impression that skill lag was caused by being around many other players. Is it actually being caused just by being in the same zone as many of other players?

Perma-stealth backstab theives

joshisanonymous.5270

I know about 95% of thieves use shadow refuge to reset fights, and I only see about 5% of players counter it. The sad part is, it’s PAINFULLY easy to counter. One knockback, one pull, and that thief is going to be stuck out of stealth flopping on the floor having no idea what to do.
I think people need to be a little more conservative on their CC skills, and learn how to properly use them.

This too. Shadow refuge is just another bullseye for where to AoE/CC, although a bigger one than black powder. A greatsword mesmer can just immediately knock them out of the circle, a staff mesmer can nearly cover the whole thing with a chaos storm, a mesmer with an offhand focus can pull them out with the 4 ability. There are numerous options even for a class with few AoEs.

When I see a thief shadow refuge on my necro I know the fight is over because I can fear them out and then they’re helpless and low on health. It’s similar for engineers who have an absurd amount of AoE/CC for those situations.

No one should have trouble burning through a thief’s 15k hits with 0 toughness unless said thief has some lightning reflexes (then you would probably be dying regardless of the class that player was on).

joshisanonymous.5270

^This. And thieves practically remove conditions every time they fart. So saying, just lock them down with conditions is pretty stupid. They have a ridiculous amount of stunbreakers and condition cleanses.

But… I easily kill them on both my engineer and my necro who are both condition based. They remove a max of 2 conditions while stealthed if traited, not to mention you can apply more conditions while they’re still stealthed. They have like 2 active methods that I know of of removing more conditions and both are like 30 second cooldowns (and one may only remove movement conditions while taking up a utility slot IIRC).

Seriously, thieves are not trouble. All you have to do is AoE near where they just stealthed. If I were a mesmer, I’d shatter often so they can’t stealth off my clones and so they AoE can hit them and when they pop up, blink away or something then go in for one of those sword 2 shatter combos. Thieves die incredibly quick when immobilized. If you’re a phantasm build, just blink and stealth all over the place and leave your phantasms up to wallop the thief the second they appear. Seriously, you shouldn’t have trouble even with the lack of AoE that mesmers have.

I had difficulty with thieves for about a day after getting to WvW. My engineer can pretty much walk in a straight line and spam either bombs or grenades behind him and they just die. My necro just stands in his marks and fears them when they pop out of stealth. It’s incredibly simple. I’m sure there are some good thieves that won’t die to these tactics but they’re not that common and you probably should have trouble with a good player anyway.

(Also, perma-stealth thieves are not backstabbing you for huge numbers. You need to use an offhand pistol for perma-stealth, meaning you don’t get cloak and dagger to apply vulnerability with. D/P thieves are also pretty easy to hit while stealthing because they have a little red circle that appears on the ground like a giant bullseye.)

You’re assuming that zergs are not part of the design intentions of World vs World gameplay. The whole point of WvW is to have large-scale epic battles for casual players.

Either way, you won’t stop people from zerging. People will zerg if there’s no commander icon just like they do in every other MMO. They’ll even zerg when the rewards are severely diminished for doing so like they did in DAoC. It’s a silly goal anyway. If you don’t want to zerg, then don’t. There will be other people who aren’t zerging around even if most are zerging. If you’re on a T1 server, transfer. There. Solved zerging for ya.

I’d prefer them to be larger, too, probably due to lots of experience with the same game you’re referring to. I think they like it small because it penalizes people less, which causes less frustration, and keep them playing.

Sometimes I really wonder why I’m trying to kill enemy players, though. If you’re taking their border land tower, for instance, they can literally die and run back within 30 seconds. Same if you’re killing people at the south camp in the boarder lands. You’re probably better off trying to distract them than actually killing them.

EDIT: Like lavra, I am also completely against mounts.

He does this with other professions, too.

I think you’d be fine even from level 2. I did 60-80 purely through zerging in WvW on my engineer and the only times I died were when the whole zerg wiped. It was also fast, maybe 12 hours for all 20 levels?

But for the naysayers, no one ever complained to me. In fact, the zergs on Maguuma tend to have quite a few up-levels. And you’re not much squishier than a level 80 character, you just can’t expect to jump in on the front lines.

I’d say pick a ranged profession/build with a decent amount of AoE. You won’t be the player that turns the tide on huge battles but you won’t be anything like a pure leecher either. If I leveled another character, I’d definitely do it this way.

Weakening Shroud doesn’t help me much when I’m pretty much always out of LF because I have barely any way to gain it with this build (using staff and scepter/dagger). Besides, it’s not 100% uptime unless the people you’re fighting are standing on top of you (actually I’m not sure of the range) every time you pop in and out of DS. I don’t believe the effect pulses while you’re in DS, it just casts one time when you enter, and not even every time you enter because of the cooldown. Even if it’s powerful, it’s not super reliable.

To all the WvW duelers out there

joshisanonymous.5270

The thing I like about WvW is that there aren’t any rules.

This kinda thing bugged the hell out of me in DAoC, where there are rituals before and after fights and you have to be careful about helping realmmates, etc. It’s even less excusable in GW2: your rewards are the same whether someone adds in or not, it’s much easier to jump right back into a fight after getting stomped, and there’s sPvP if you want to set up “honorable” duels.

I mostly roam solo and I don’t care in the slightest if someone adds into my fight regardless of what side they’re on, or if I’m caught off guard by an enemy, or if I get stomped. These things go both ways, afterall, and the fact that they happen is what makes roaming exciting to me.

If you absolutely have to duel in WvW, at the very least do it in out-of-the-way locations and don’t get upset when someone jumps in. (The OP’s reaction of simply sitting and watching is refreshing compared to the usual complaining and pleas to “stop.”)

Again, Dhuumfire by itself… not op. In combo with Terror/bleeding/torment: too strong. Engenieers don’t have that combo, that’s why Incendiary Powder is fine for them, even as an adept trait.

I guess. Although my Engineer can drop 12 stacks of confusion, 20+ seconds of burning, 10+ seconds of poison, and finish off with as many stacks of bleeding as you’ll let me spam on you in like 5-6 seconds, not to mention cripple and blinding as bonuses, and then do it all again 10 seconds later in case the entire thing is cleansed. During those 10 seconds I have plenty of blinds/immobilizes/knockdowns to drop, too. A Necro’s torment/terror/burning combo is accessible only every 40 seconds with a 30/30/10/0/0 build. Even if this particular combo is a larger condition spike, it doesn’t match the consistent flurry of various conditions Engineers are dropping. That sounds pretty balanced to me.

Which says to me that Engineers get this trait so easily not because they don’t have the same combo but because it’s really not such a great trait and they already have other ways to get burning. The only reason it’s not looked at as a weak trait for Necros is because they have no other access to burning so they’re willing to spend 30 points just to get a relatively weak trait that allows them to get some spike condition damage every 40 seconds. Again, seems pretty balanced.

Not so. Guardians can easily have perma-swiftness with boon duration runes+trait line (which many wvw support guardians use already for other reasons).

Signet of the Locust + Spectral Walk will average less. Necros can’t get perma-swiftness.

Spectral Walk + Warhorn + 20% boon duration + Spectral Mastery = Necro perma-swiftness. It’s probably easier to get 100% uptime with a Necro than a few other classes.

@archon-
I totally agree about the sprint thing…I don’t play warrior, so I’ve got no personal experience to draw on.

I’m currently playing a condi-tank build that has very high mobility and initiative regen.

the thing is, I am limited by initiative, but I dont just have to wait for it. I get cooldowns too and they help a lot.

First I get 1 initiative every second
an extra 3 initiative every 10 seconds (trait and infil-signet)
5 initiative from steal every 21 seconds (and a short speed boost in stealth)
2 initiative from my heal every 30 seconds
So in a minute I’m getting 60 + 18 + 15 + 4 initiative = 97 initiative
so thats about 16 infiltrator arrows in a minute or 1 every 4 seconds (which ignores the 2.5 free ones you get at the beginning for starting with full initiative).
this is in addition to 3 × 1.5k steals in a minute (in a distance wvw run, you can probably expect at least two of them to be profitable distance wise, maybe giving you an extra 1k distance each.

This is all in addition to perma-swiftness and occasional bursts of speed in stealth.
I also left out infiltrator signet-because I counted its initiative regen instead, so we’re assuming no activations.

Sure but this is one of those theoretical builds the OP was talking about that has no real combat viability.

Sounds like 0/0/20/20/30

Even then you specced for ini regen over actual survivability in shadow arts and acrobatics, and the same for the trickery line.

I think it’s pretty difficult to label a build as having “no real combat viability.” Not to mention, isn’t building for mobility the same as building for survivability with a thief? If you can use Infiltrator’s Arrow alone every 4 seconds then you’re basically uncatchable and/or untouchable due to constantly blinding your opponent. That seems like a great combat advantage to me.

You’re overestimating how powerful Inf Arrow is. Don’t expect to kill Anthony if all you do is spam #5. Especially since you have 0 +damage traits.

Who said anything about killing people by spamming Infiltrator’s Arrow? I was talking about using all that mobility as defense. I didn’t say anything about where the damage would come from. And traits aren’t the end all be all of offensive capabilities. Your gear would give you your offensive abilities, which honestly could be full berserker with that kind of build. Or, you could rely on conditions as bobross seems to do.

@archon, actually I play that build…the damage comes from condition damage, caltrops and death blossom spam. It does pretty well in duels, zerg battles and small groups. The survivability comes from frequent stealth/tps and evades. Not saying its the strongest build, but it is very mobile, and fun.

And everyone knows that condi thief is a joke and will never beat a competent player worth their salt.

You’re just dodging the point. Your saying his build does not fit the rules for this test because it’s not viable for combat, we explain to you that it is and why, then you make claims about conditions not being as good as other forms of damage. Who cares? The point is they can, in fact, kill people and this build can, in fact, be used for combat.

I don’t buy the OP’s claim, which may be because I don’t see what’s so great about Dhuumfire. Both professions seem about equivalent in their ability to dump conditions on people now.

Basically, it seems like Blurred Frenzy is still really powerful but you can’t just mindless pop it in every situation and expect things to insta-die.

How do you grenade good?

in Engineer

Posted by: joshisanonymous.5270

joshisanonymous.5270

The greatest piece of advice that anyone can give you in this instance is to remove the aoe sighting and enable “Fast-Cast Ground Targeting”. You will throw grenades wherever your mouse is. Additionally, I would suggest keybinding your primary kit (nades in this case) to the standard weapon swap button “~”, as this will allow you to swap between kit and weapon more effectively.

Personally I think this is terrible advice. I think grenades are much easier to utilize with the ground targeting on.

You’re free to disagree, but to go as far as calling it “terrible advice” seems unreasonable. At worst, someone will try it, scoff and go back to reticle-based ground-targeting—while on the other hand if they like it, it could cut the number of clicks/keypresses required for using grenades in half.

Personally, the only time I miss the reticle is on the odd occasion I need to do one of the dark-room jumping puzzles, but hey, that’s what the Flamethrower is for.

I didn’t think fast-cast would work that well for me but I definitely prefer it after trying it.

The problem I had with visible ground targeting is not so much the extra time it took to press “1” again but the fact that I couldn’t remember how many times I had pressed the key for a grenade when I was in the thick of things. I’d be trying to throw a chill grenade then a bleeding grenade inbetween spamming the normal grenade and accidentally just target the first, without actually throwing it, before moving to the second. This can’t happen with fast-cast.

On the other hand, the one giant downside to fast-cast for me is that when the screen gets very busy I can sometimes lose my cursor and these are the worst moments because I’m probably getting killed and don’t have time to pause or make mistakes. It’s a lot harder to lose a giant green reticle.

As for the mouse and keybindings, I have a 2 button mouse and the only keybindings I’ve really change are making 6-10 into shift+1/shift+2/etc. I suck at trying to move and dodge if I’m just standing there in a faceoff with a ranged opponent but I think these are probably the worst times to use grenades. Usually I pull them out when kiting or sieging which doesn’t require a lot of dodging or left/right movement anyway.

For not being able to land conditions on an Automated Response engineer before they hit 25%:

This should be no problem at all for a necro. If you’re using scepter and dagger and have no more than +40% duration from food, you have 2 skills that’ll last 10-12 seconds and both do upwards of 4,000 damage, which I know because that’s what it says for my necro’s condition build. My engineer has 18,000 hits, that means he has 4,500 hits by the time I can negate incoming conditions.

I’m pretty sure necros have the longest base duration conditions in the game and just received two new hard hitting conditions to boot. Sure, Automated Response makes it a little harder, you may have to time when to apply your conditions that are on cooldowns, but that’s a skill issue in 1v1 situations only.

Not to mention my engineer uses Automated Response specifically because I have 1 other skill that can clear conditions and have no condition reduction in my build. Even my defensive stat is all focused on toughness, which your conditions don’t care about. You’ll be hard pressed to find someone using an elixir build with 409, condition reduction food/gear, AND Automated response. It probably about evens out with any other method of dealing with conditions.

This is an issue with Melandru runes, too. Sure you can get the runes and use the reduction food and all that good stuff, but you’re clearing giving up other things in the process. The OP makes it sound like people are running around with 2,000 power and precision while also having -70% duration and 1,600 vitality or toughness.

Just make it so they appear after any attack during stealth. Boom, problem solved, bad thieves super suck now, good thieves are still good.

I have a thief, I play said thief, I think it’s stupid that I get free chances at my backstabs as even if they are evaded or blocked. Makes 0 sense.

I completely agree with this, what’s super ridiculous is that even if I backstab into a block or an aegis I still don’t break stealth, so i can break a guardian’s aegis and backstab inmediately, or with something like a shield block I can just carry on spamming 1 until the block is down without losing anything. That doesn’t make sense and it doesn’t promote skill.

I wasn’t aware of this, actually. I’ve put up a block against thieves before and seen “block block block block” pop up, like 5-6 times real quick, and simply assumed it was their regular chain and that not being revealed was some sort of lag. What you’re saying is that they’re actually repeatedly hitting me with backstabs and then landing the backstab once my block goes down?

The second skill is part of the class mechanic, though. It must be an added bonus, else our class mechanic actually hurts us. So comparing an utility+toolbelt to an utility is useless.

Do you take in account the thief class mechanics when comparing the skills? No.
Are warriors’ weapon skills weaker because they have a burst skill? No.
Are other classes’ skills nerfed because they have a class mechanic? No.
So why should it be so for engineers?

Also, there are quite many counters for toss elixir R anyway, and using it for the condition removal instead pf the ress is basically wasting it.

You sound ridiculous. Elixir R is fine.

By the way…
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Signet_of_Agility
Same cooldown, better active effect (it cures conditions too) and also has a passive effect. And it is instant. Assuming the wiki is right, obviously.
We have a toolbelt skill as well, sure. But we shouldn’t pay a price for our class mechanic – thus our utilities themselves shouldn’t be worse than other classes’ ones.

Signet of Agility: Passive precision, refills endurance, cures one condition.
Elixir R: Revives players (oneself included), refills endurance, cures all conditions.

Also note that Elixir R gives you these abilities between 2 different skills, meaning you don’t have to worry about refilling your endurance and then not having a way to cure conditions 5 seconds later. I really don’t see how you can claim that there’s a difference in usefulness between these two skills. Not to mention Engineers aren’t Thieves. These classes play differently and their skills should be treated differently.

They took away our last good stunbreak.

If you kill Elixir R, at leas add a stunbreak to elixir c.

It seems to me that they were trying to shuffle stunbreaks around to different utility types. Moving an elixir stunbreak from one elixir to another wouldn’t do that but moving it to a kit (Elixir Gun) or a turret (Thumper Turret) does. Having stunbreaks all over the place like this means you can actually focus on any type of utility without worrying about having access to key skills. The same thing happened to Elementalists: their stunbreaks were basically all on cantrips and now they’re all over the place so Elementalists no longer need to focus on cantrips if they don’t want to get locked down.

As far as the OP: If they didn’t remove the stunbreak, they probably would’ve removed the self-revive or something like that. It’s difficult to always have your cake and eat it too.

If you’re using grenades or bombs you can kill basically anything just by running in circles. When I was leveling the straight PvE way, I used grenades a lot and simply ran in circle tossing them behind me. Anything that’s not ranged died without ever touching me. Ranged was kinda boring to fight but all you have to do is dodge and attack. Doesn’t really matter what attack you’re using, it’s the dodging that will keep you alive.

A quick note, too: If you’re seeing people facerolling through the PvE content, it’s almost definitely because they’re level 80 already and have exotic gear and whatnot. I remember playing at release and the PvE zones were full of people doing content that was at their level, nowadays I barely see anyone who doesn’t have a down arrow next to their name (that indicates that they’re a higher level than the zone).

Edit: I also agree that you should go ahead and use multiple kits. There are plenty of builds that barely use kits but if you never get acquainted with having a couple that you switch between then your build options in the future will be highly limited or frustrating to learn.

Maybe y’all just aren’t into steampunk? I really like all the skins. It’s kinda weird to me that some of the helms have the goggles covering the eyes and some don’t, but the skins look great to me still.

How do you get up to 25 stacks of might all the time?

I don’t :p
I get 10-25 most of the time. HGH + boon duration stuff + sigil of battle

I must be missing something because that only adds up to a max of 17 stacks for me even with 75% boon duration, Fast-Acting Elixirs, luckily getting might out of the thrown Elixir B, and even using Elixir S and thrown Elixir S.

You can do Fractals at level 1 and you’re adjusted up to 80.

But really, your focus is PvE and you’re complaining about having to play PvE to do more PvE?

I do believe that video game/Internet addiction is referenced in the new DSM-5 (2013) as a condition for further study. I’m sure this doesn’t apply to most here but it is being considered as an actual diagnosable disorder.

Sadism and masochism used to be in the DSM and they removed them as a disorder. Something being in a book doesn’t make it fact, even the DSM.

There are probably people who are addicted to video games. However, it’s far more likely to me that there are people who are depressed or anxious and they’re SELF-MEDICATING with video games.

Considering the damage some prescription meds do to people, I’m not sure video game addiction is the big problem here.

Treat the depression, and you’ll have less people addicted to video games.

Well, yes, exactly. So when someone states that they’ve played a video game 12 hours a day every day for a year and that wasn’t simply AFK time, there’s certainly a chance that they have problems they need to address.

(On a side note, I added up my time played when I felt I had a problem and it was nowhere near 3,000 hours per year. It was around 750 hours per year. That was all non-AFK time and literally the maximum amount of hours I could fit in while still working full time and sleeping.)

So easy to beat a D/X thief as engi: run while throwing grenades backwards behind you. If they chase you they will die and if they run, well, they’re still not a problem.

… Come to think of it, I should be trying this with my Bomb build. BUT, they’ll most likely either run away or shadowstep to me.

Are necros op now?

in Necromancer

Posted by: joshisanonymous.5270

joshisanonymous.5270

I tested a couple builds on my Necro (which I’ve played more than any other profession) yesterday in the Mists and it felt much better but not amazing. I was still more interested in playing my Engineer so I took him to WvW for a few hours to check out the changes.

I beat all the Necros I played against except one. He was clearly much more skilled than the others I played against. I had trouble getting near him because of how he placed his marks and when I did get near him I ended up feared repeatedly. On top of that, he used staff and an offhand dagger so all my conditions were getting thrown right back at me (and my build doesn’t have nearly enough cleansing for that). But the other Necros I fought, not much different. I assume a lot were out of practice.

I think what happened is there’s now an actual skill ceiling for Necros. Mine didn’t feel that much stronger even on NPCs because I’m out of practice but my builds got much stronger even without changing any traits. Necros had basically all their condition durations increased, they have way more life force generation, they have access to two skills with protection on them which are actually worth using now, they can have almost 50% uptime on stability OR pretty much a 100% crit chance in Death Shroud, and a whole new condition that every build has access to and that can be fired and forgotten about while you do other things.

This is a huge list but there will still be people who don’t know how to take advantage of it and it still leaves Necros with one main weakness: they’re punching bags. If someone is out maneuvering you, they’re still gonna win, it’ll just take a while. Necros still won’t be able to face down multiple opponents without being very good. But these things just make the class like any other.

The Rocket Boots change is pretty awesome. It’s now much easier to use now for both catching people and getting away from people plus it’s an extra condition and blast finisher. I don’t even care about the removal of the stun breaker component because I die way more often to cripples/immobilizes when being chased than stuns.

You see, this is the kind of thinking most people do, and it’s flawed.

YOU had a problem with an addiction to an MMO, so you assume anyone who plays an MMO all the time has an addiction to MMO. Guild Wars 2 is the LEAST addictive MMO I’ve ever played. I’m not addicted to it. I’m enjoying it.

A lot of the reason I’m enjoying it is my guild. They’re fun to hang out with. But I assure you, I do a lot more with my day/time than just play Guild Wars 2. You’re simply making assumptions about me based on your own experience. My experience is completely different.

I play Guild Wars 2 because I have a LOT of free time, but also because I’m largely home bound. I also watch TV, read, play with the dogs. Guild Wars 2 works for me, because I can play in very small increments. I don’t have to play for hours at a time, and very rarely do. I sit down to relax for a bit, play a bit, take a break, play some more later. Logged in is not the same as play time, as I’ve already pointed out.

Everyone has different life circumstances. As an example, I’d MUCH rather visit a national park than play Guild Wars 2. Except that visiting a national park isn’t an option for me. I also read a book a week, follow several TV shows, and spend time with my wife.

Judging people without knowing them or their situation, particularly based on your own experience, will often lead you to false conclusions.

Just to be clear, I wasn’t judging you. The whole point of my post was to say that it makes me concerned that you might be playing so much for unhealthy reasons. I don’t know if you are or aren’t, but that possibility is where the concern lies.

If I’m making any assumptions here, it’s that I think my experience is not unique, but even just taking a cursory glance through a peer-reviewed article database brought up plenty of articles on the topic so I doubt that even this assumption is poor.

But again, I’m simply talking about the possibility of a problem, nothing more.

Where are thieves OP?

in Thief

Posted by: joshisanonymous.5270

joshisanonymous.5270

I think the problem with the thief is that it is all of those things. The ability of a thief to survive is directly related to how good the person playing the thief is. Because all of a thief’s defense is “active” (meaning, you have to trigger your defense, either by dodge, blind, etc.) as opposed to “passive” (meaning toughness and vitality, that are there whether you trigger something or not), a thief’s ability to survive is in his ability to anticipate and outsmart his opponent. Because of this, a really good thief has the potential to be really good (high skill ceiling) and a bad thief will be really bad (low skill floor). When people complain about thief being op, what they really should be saying is that thief has too high of a skill ceiling (which I don’t agree with, it’s just that this is the problem that people have with the thief, and allows for better arguments than “thief is op because I got killed”).

This. I’ve barely played a thief but even in that little time I’ve realized that you either die instantly or don’t get so much as a scratch on you. A really good thief will probably kill most people without every being touched 1v1 and will can cause havoc to groups even. Even if they aren’t able to eventually kill a whole group, a good thief is basically still unkillable themselves. (And before it’s said, roaming certainly helps in WvW because those groups you take out or even that one person are just as likely to be heading to the zerg or to a POI to accomplish something that helps their world as they are to simply be running around looking for scrubs to kill.)

If the OP really wants to make an argument that thieves aren’t overpowered (in WvW), they should get into whether other professions that are played well are basically unkillable. Maybe they are, maybe they aren’t, but that would be a much better argument than, “Killing people does nothing!”

I always enjoy reading the excuses people use to justify sitting in front of a computer playing a game ten hours a day, everyday. If I was retired I would have many hobbies. If I was rich, I certainly wouldn’t spend all my time on a game. If I worked from home I would actually focus on my job. I don’t know just seems way unhealthy to have any good reason. I personally felt like I had to many hours logged with 450. Well don’t want to be super negative because that’s not good either. So to each their own. It’s not my life so as long as you are enjoying yourself more power to you friends. Just don’t be afraid to expand your horizons.

Basically, this. My concern when someone has and /age (or /played) that amounts to 12 hours a day is that they’re not playing that much because it’s the activity they feel makes their life more enjoyable than any other but because they simply can’t stop. I once spent two years playing an MMO literally every moment I wasn’t at work, in school, or sleeping. At one point I didn’t leave my apartment for an entire week and mostly just ordered pizza when hungry (because cooking would subtract from game time). Obviously, some part of me enjoyed the game, but I was miserable. And I’ve always regretted it desperately because there’s so much I wanted to do and could’ve done during that time but didn’t.

So, maybe it’s just me, but the shocked response is not so much, “You’re a loser, get a life,” as it is, “I’m concerned that you’re not really that okay with playing so much.” Case in point, Vayne sounds rather defensive even when responding to the person I quoted, who I thought was making his point as delicately as possible. That causes concern in me since, if one is really satisfied with the amount of gaming they do, they wouldn’t get so angry when someone else simply says, “To each their own, but don’t you have other hobbies you want to make time for?” (Sorry to pick you out Vayne, but you’re the only one in the 3,000 hours range who’s responding a lot.)

If you really need to min-max your character in the shortest time possible, do some PvE. It’s not THAT painful, really, and you could fully gear a character in like a month, no problem.

(If you have umpteen million characters, you should probably be more worried about when the last time you saw the sun was than how long it’ll take you to min-max all of them.)
