Also when big fights are going on in wvw on my system the hard drive is spinning like mad although that doesn’t happen in other games. I suppose it would perform better in SSD but still that’s not a solution.

There seem to be some kind of optimization issues in the game, even after I leave the area where a big fight was going on the fps are still lower than before by a big amount.

Hello, using nvidia 310.53 beta drivers and GTX 660ti. After the new patch I am getting lockups. Happened twice while entering a game loading Lion’s Arc and while playing in WvW.

I was also expecting this nerf, although fighting against it on every topic. Now I just want to see what happens, will people shut it now they got what they wanted? Will the game become more enjoyable and challenging?

If yes, then great but if that nerf was the start to an endless class balancing every month like it happened on other mmo’s then I will be off.

Simple as that.

The reason I lost to these classes was that the specific people playing those classes were skilled enough to beat a glass canon thief. I have no trouble beating a bad/average player of any class(but ofcourse as you say skill does not matter).

I dare you to come to Underworld hopefully we can join some sPvP I am really interested to see how good you are on your mesmer because I just feel you are a bad player.

Thieves can be countered because it happened to me, how many times do I have to mention it? I have lost to: Elementalist, Guardian, Engineer, Warrior, Hunter when they knew what they were doing and had correct traits.

Again if you want to prove anything make a video of you fighting thieves. If I do make a video with my thief roaming in WvW you will see me winning most 1vs1 fights because the opponents are clueless players that have no idea what they are doing, I encounter them every day in WvW, probably because people are playing this game more casually than other mmo’s.

Thief is a 1vs1 class, they are useless in long fights, because of their initiative usage and cooldowns. If you can’t accept that you just ignore the facts.

Screenshots are no proof, when this game has debuffs/conditions and other factors that take part on the damage output.

Even the combo spam you are posting is incorrect because you have no idea about the thief class yet you claim to have one. To perform this combo you lose all your initiative and cooldowns, if you want to tell me that after I use everything my class has to offer the enemy player shouldn’t go down(if he doesn’t dodge/block/heal etc) then you are obviously mad.

So if my grandmather loses to a backstab thief then posts a screenshot here that she lost because she has one hand only so she can’t play her class that well concludes that thieves need to be nerfed?

You were roaming alone in WvW and now you are crying because you lost to a burst dps class and you don’t even provide info about the fight(everything matters, gear skill HP left on opponent, debuffs everything). If any of you kids out there want to prove that thieves are OP go make a video showing you in WvW fighting against a glass canon thief and let the others judge if it’s an overpowered class or not.

Also warriors got Immobilize abilities so they can land their burst combo quite easy but I suppose you don’t know that.

What? You are probably talking BS right there. If you get down so quick on your toughness mesmer how do you comment me losing to mesmers even though I am sure the ones I fought didn’t have toughness build since they dealt a lot of damage on me.

Also where did this happen? cause if it was on WvW and you had like full stacks of vulnerability then it would be your fault. I can start saying things like “a warrior killed me in 2 sec” and stuff without providing any info, too.

I am pretty sure a backstab thief can’t beat a good mesmer, and I base that on my fights like on every post of mine.

Ofcourse it’s no challenge since most opponents are bad players that joined this game to play casually.

Wait and see what will happen to this game if they nerf thief class without it being needed, you will see warriors and mesmers getting nerfed after and even more crying around the whole forums. The community will drop dramatically with kids fighting all over the place. After that you will see skill changes that will change the class you started with which for me is wrong.

If after all this balance is achieved on this game, then go on and do what you have to do but as other companies have proved they can’t balance a game because they listen to the playerbase.

Actually if you use Basilisk then activate one venom and 2 signets basilisk stays. If you use Basilisk then activate 3 signets, it goes away so I suppose it’s a bug.

So people crying about venom + signet/steal combo are just clueless I suppose.
As clueless as they are when getting backstabed for high damage when they have over 10 stacks of vulnerability and the thief has might stacks.

Is that a bug or was there a change I missed? Applying basilisk venom then using signet removes the venom buff.

Why wouldn’t you be able to finish an opponent while in stealth, are you kidding me? If a thief uses one stealth ability for finishing a downed player he then has no stealth ability for longer than 30seconds, which for me is worst case since I only use Hide in Shadow for stealth. So I have to chose. Same applies for stealth res.

If you get downed in WvW and die by a Thief that stealths you can only blame yourself or your team, since you got downed in the first place and also your teammates didn’t attempt to res you.

This is a game where everything you do has it’s consequences, using burst build leaves you with no defense, using defensive build lowers your dps and such.

How do you dodge an instant ability that can be executed from stealth?

No it was in WvW, both of us level 80 in full excotics so the result would have been the same in sPVP. We did not even see them before the first attack. I guess they used shadow refuge to stealth long enaugh to get in range but I am not sure about that.

Even so, this is an event that you won’t see often. It can happen in every mmo and it’s ofcourse not game breaking or a reason to nerf(before someone goes there), etc.

You were in wvw, so what were you doing without your team? I suppose capturing a supply base or something, but again you won’t see this happening often, probability wise.

There is a reason there are classes that wear light,medium and heavy armor on mmos.

Power/Vit/Toughness

PvP wise, the only thing that worked for me was power/precision and crit damage.
As for accessories I went for power/vit/crit damage to balance the stats which seems to work(the extra vit) I also think I could have gone for toughness too.

Anything else I tried, had low dps and no kills(or it was a lot time consuming to get rewarded for your attempt to kill).

If you play with a team though, the path you are thinking would work great if you like more of a support style. But why would a thief want to support when you got guardians around for example? That’s where things get a little complicated in this game.

You are wrong, some classes have knock down/stun abilities. You can use it on thief to stop him from going into stealth, since Hide in Shadows has cast time. Stealth time is really low – 3s, which make them easy to foresee where they will go.

Even if you use Shadow Refuge some classes can push them out of the circle and reveal them if they do it right.

The above 2 has happened to me few times, but ofcourse these people knew their class and how to face a thief, which is not the case for most people that whine here in the forums.

Could you add the following in the options menu?

1) Gathering names(on – off) so that the names always display if you want them to for gathering materials(ores/trees etc)

2) Add separate option for enemy npcs and players so we can turn off mob names for example in WvW but keep enemy player names on.

I remember few months ago before the heartseeker nerf people getting killed by me and my class and they didn’t even dodge a thing. After they cried about it and people told them what to do(for example dodge or use their healing ability right away).

Things have changed a lot since then, I haven’t found an opponent that does not dodge anymore which actually made it quite more difficult to perform a burst dps build. Now they know how to dodge but they probably do not know when to do it, cause they are average players.

What will happen if there is a significant nerf coming out is that skilled thief players won’t even be able to kill average players, with that build which will hurt balance even more.

Put a skilled glass canon thief against a skilled player of any other class and the thief will lose pretty sure about that because it happened to me. I wish duelling was available to easily prove that through a video.

OR hit V when you see the thief doing something(add CnD animation here) and you now have a disabled thief that you can play with and kill within few seconds.

Thief is a class that can blend it and cause confusion, I sometimes go inside a group full of people that are attacking a keep in WvW and down a player so that I can confuse them or force them to stop what they are doing. It’s a strategic class.

But ofcourse people in here still look it as 1vs1 which is their biggest mistake.

Sorry that’s the truth, my proof is that I lost to every single class(except necro since I haven’t found a skilled one to fight yet) when they knew how to play. If you want this proof to be shown here in the forums we can arrange it.

The only issue in this forum is one – simple as that:

People do not get that burst dps spec is for 1vs1 and for thieves that like to solo.
It has no use against more than 1 enemies or against a single skilled player.

Most people that argue with the above either want to always win on 1vs1 so they ask about nerfing the class, or they simply do not know how to play so they whine anyway.

I can actually prove this if you are willing to set up a fight and you are a skilled player. I am even willing to frap it and post a video of the fight here.

You don’t realize though that most of thieves that use burst dps spec is because they enjoy playing alone, 1vs1 fights.

There is no way a good thief with that build would win against 2 other players that are equally good. No chance at all. So I wouldn’t call the class overpowered.

But still, if you joined this game for 1vs1 fights you are doing it wrong. I am sure if people focus on massive battles for example in wvw, or participate in a guild thieves wouldn’t be a problem since they would have support by other players.

Even if I go to a battle against 2 players, and down 1 of them, I can’t finish them if the other one immidiately heals them. Bad players would let their team mate die, and then they come here and shout that a thief killed them both…

Break what? I don’t care if thieves get nerfed or anything. I am not a kid that will come here to cry if that happens. I will defend some points I know that are right though, when clueless people talk about a class that they haven’t played or don’t know how to counter.

If you think thieves should be nerfed because they are very good at 1vs1 then do it. But this game is mostly about massive battles, on which thieves are no problem at all.

Also, if you want this game to become wow-ish with weekly class revamps be my guest but I prefer to play the same class I started the game with. If something is wrong with balance, then it’s anets fault.

Most of the thief players i know admit they are very overpowered – and its one of the reasons so many have switched to them.

A nerf – a big one – would be most welcome by 90% of the community.

A big nerf would only make things worse for the whole game, but I don’t think anet has the intention to ruin their game, they seem to have learned from other companies mistakes.

Burst dps build is only powerful against bad to average opponents. I can prove it to you whenever you want, just bring me a skilled player and you will see that this build loses against them.

I have no idea which build could beat these skilled players I have encountered, if not this build. And getting it nerfed? Then this build won’t even be able to defeat average players and thieves would become a support class.

Also: Other classes have block/immune damage abilities(+ their dodge) which make the thief choose the correct timing to attack. Thief has nothing to protect except stealth which you can still get damaged from.

Also, people that complain seem to want to be able to do the same the thief does with their class, for example they want to down enemies in few seconds as guardians or necros, or engineers. Although these classes have a lot of CC or support, I have lost to them when they knew what they were doing.

I also tried playing support/defensive builds with my thief but I found finishing on sPvP with no kills most of the time. That is not the purpose of thief class. The only plus this class has is that he can burst dps and kill an opponent when he is bad to average player.

I will say it one more time, if this build is nerfed GW2 will change a lot the following months in regard to class balance, and I fear to the worse.

I lost fights against hunters/engineers even when using 5 signets(25 stacks of might) and trying to burst them down, but they won because they had the correct build and experience with their class. So how am I going to beat them if this gets nerfed, when I can’t even beat them now?

This. The Backstab setup is a great noob killer (Even better if they go full glass) but meet a half decent opponent and the thief is going to die.

Dealing 8k+ damage against any opponent before they even see you is an absolute noob killer and puts you at great odds against any other player. It’s almost a win button against any other glass cannon build in this game, because those will not have enough defense to protect themselves, and will not be able to deal twice your damage neither to compensate for starting the battle with half their HP.

Hundred Blades setup is the great noob killer that takes a lot of skill to work against good players. The Backstab setp is simply much more effective.

Wrong and Wrong.
You are talking about damage output on 1vs1. If you read my post above you will see that I have lost to other classes when they know how to play, so thief is not even the best 1vs1.
Also this is not a 1vs1 game. Thief is the worst class on massive battles mostly because of initiative requirement, low ranged abilities and also slow ranged aoe.

Just wanted you guys to know we’re looking at this specifically right now. We will probably bring down the raw spike DPS for some builds, but we’ll be careful to increase other areas to compensate.

Awesome. Please keep us posted on these kind of things even if they arent ready yet to be discussed more in depth.

I like how Thiefs immediatly come up with the same old childish defenses even right after a post like that made by a dev, haha. puts fingers in ears Just get more toughness! Just dodge! Just roll a thief urself and you’ll see its like superhard to use those 3 buttons!
Even with a dev specifically saying the damage on a specific ability is too high, you guys still blame ‘all the other non thief noob players’ for your mindblowing overpowered damage and mindnumbing easy gameplay.
I just love MMO forums.

Read my post. How about that? A warrior 2 shotted(after rooting me) me and I couldn’t dodge or anything with my build, since I don’t have the traits to defend myself. Did I go cry on their forums for nerf? no, although it was a 2 shot. He killed me with the same tactic on every encounter(more than 5 times). I had 16k hp with that build/gear.

And the reason I didn’t go on their forums is that I knew I had the incorrect build for that specific fight. So I got over it.

To game designers:

There are people that still do not know how to play their class or use wrong gear/runes and everything. Right now I have a backstab burst build with signet usage, that focuses on fast dps output, but even so when I met skilled people I lost pretty badly.

These people were:
1) Elementalist (he had good defense and he also kite me like a kitten)
2) Warrior(he root then 2 shot me) since I have no survivability and low HP with this build
3) Guardian (he also had a lot of defense and good dps output)
4) Hunter (he dodged my signet+steal so I was left with nothing, then he disabled/root me and shot me down pretty fast – like the warrior did. On this particular incident I was amazed since some hunters say their class is broken.)

I am pretty sure if you asked these guys about their opinnion about thieves they would probably say that they are no problem to them or they would laugh.

Some of the above I fought them multiple times and couldn’t beat them as I do usually on other players because they knew what they were doing. I am pretty sure I wouldn’t be able to beat them even if I used defensive build since the damage output would be quite low.

Please think twice before nerfing classes out of the game because some people can’t handle dying in WvW. Most of these screenshots are from people that seem to be trying to solo WvW and die from a thief, they get mad they have to run all the way again then come here to complain.

Also nerfing the burst dps build even more(since it already got nerfed twice) will result in one thing: It will make thief a support class, since most people won’t be using the nerfed build anymore, others will come here complaining because they got nerfed and so on.

I am not sure if this particular idea was suggested before but since a lot of people suggested that open world pvp would be fun, but also some complained that they don’t want it and you can use WvW instead which I agree, but I thought of just adding wars between guilds.

So guild A declares war to guild B, then they can pvp in open world environment but people not part of these guilds can not get in combat with them.

There could also be rewards or bags of loot like in WvW.

Are you kidding me? The other day I rolled support build with full stealth/acrobatics and it happened that I joined an sPvP game, team was me and another thief vs guardian and necro. My ally was capturing bases while the other two where trying to kill me and they couldn’t so they lost the game although they were winning for 100 points. After that one of them start complaining.

So long story short:
- We go Glass cannon – they whine: omg, thieves do so much dmg
- We go Support build – they whine: omg, we can’t kill them

All I saw in this vid is 2 people that know how to pvp against some noobs. Yeah great reason for nerf. OH and it’s on WvW.

This data isn’t very helpful…

What runes were you wearing when you tested the amulets?
What amulets were you wearing when you tested the runes?

Rune used was divinity and amulet used was soldier’s.
These data is helpful if you want to see simply which one does the most damage. Even if you use a different amulet or gear by viewing these stats you can see which rune will fit you best for backstab dmg.

Why not Rune of the Ogre? It’s also a very good DPS rune. Should rank inbetween scholar and divinity.

Did I say I am getting tired of these threads? Ah yes I have said it like 10 times.
So you basically want to, nerf a class in fear that -> x numbers of that class together would be OP, against who and what exactly?

If you have a proper party/skill/build/gear you got no fear about thieves or anything else.

If you want my opinion, the more the days pass the more hard it becomes for me as a Thief to kill enemies in sPvP(which is not even as fun as WvW for me). Two weeks ago most opponents would just die, now most dodge when I go into stealth etc.

To me Thief is a class that people should fear less(among with few other classes), because most thieves play as glass cannons, in which case they have no survivability at all, which makes them an easy target.

Hey guys, just thought of sharing some damage statistics for backstab with different runes, since I saw other people wondering. I will only post rune name and damage, you can do a research for the pros and cons of each rune set though:

Runes:
scholar: 7000 (+10% dmg when thief’s HP over 90%)
divinity: 6200
ogre: 6200
thief: 6100
eagle: 6000
rage: 6000

Amulets:
berserker: 7600
valkyrie: 7550
soldier: 6900
celestial: 6000

I suppose they share the cooldown. But you can try that for yourself in mists.
