Reaper and minions?

in Necromancer

Ever since day 1 I wanted to make a necro similar to that of Diablo 2. An army by my side destroying everything in our oath. I know minions are sub par and the AI sucks. But can anyone who has spent time in the BWEs tell me if they think there is a viable reaper minion build? Doesn’t need to be meta or the best, just not complete kitten.

I am what most call a boomerang player. Fairly casual but I am looking to be a bit more hardcore. By no means do I need to be the best most meta class or build – but I do want to be effective and not struggle through content/bring my group down. I am 50%pve/40%wvw/10%pvp

I have an 80 theif (my first class) an 80 ranger and 80 necro. I love the concept of daredevil and I know there is still time for tweaks and changes between now and release. But I a, at a cross roads as I prepare for HOT release. I don’t have an exuberant amount of time to play and would like to pick which character I take into HOT.

I have most recently been playing ranger and they are pretty fun, but nothing to special, I rarely play a healer but Druid does seem to be unique in that it is the only real “healer”. In game. Might be nice to switch from pure damage to a dmg/support build.

Reaper is everything I wanted necro to be, a whirl of death. I have always loved minions and having an army, but minion gameplay has never been great….. So I am not sure necro/reaper will fully do it for me until they make minions viable.

And now theif…. I just want it so badly to be good. I would love to use staff and SB or staff p/p. I love the mobility. And honestly I don’t even care if the Dps is not meta par as long as it is an okay amount. The daredevil seems like an evasion tank build and if daredevil is a tank thief then that is great. I just want them to be viable.

So all that said. My fellow theives. Do I play the hopeful card and go daredevil? Does it look like it may pan out? Or am I setting myself up for failure and frustration? Should I look at ranger and necro more?

Thanks in advance

Thank you for the great and detailed replies!
Forgot how great this community is. I am not sure how I want to build him but I am leveling him currently so PvE and WvW are my main focus at the moment. Effectivness aside, I just love the rapid pews of SB. With the new specialization system I will really need to look at all the viable lines and builds. So much has changed. Inused to main theif and alted a necro. Is it still true conditions are not great in general pve? Power builds are great and all but I like the concept of conditions more, just from a flavor perspective. Sword main hand instead of greatsword is also an option although I see a lot of people saying things like “if you can pull off the autonattack” which… Doesnt make sense to me, is there something tricky about sword I am missing or… Are there people that dont know how to face enemies?!

Again thank you so much to those who have posted valid info and explained themselves. Much appreciated!

Just came back and thinking about giving ranger a go. I am by no means hardcore, but do like to be effective. I like the concept behind short bow and I like greatsword a lot. Are there any viable builds that encorporate them? How do rangers stack up these days? Pet AI improved?

Thanks!

What is the difference between fractals and dungeons? I found it was very difficult to duo/trio dungeons in the past, is it possible now?

Hey GW2 community, It’s been a while. I stopped playing right before fractals came out and am thinking about coming back. The main reason I left was because I felt a bit board at end game. Sure I could PVP and WVW for a while and I found it fun but I still felt a bit empty. In most other games (I know its hard to compare GW2) My favorite thing is duo/trio’ing content, not designed to be duoed/trioed,with my RL friends and that is one thing I felt was missing. I had 100% world completion and had run all the dungeons multiple times, done my fair share of PVP and WVW. I felt I exhausted a lot of the content. I hadnt done any legendary weapons, but it seemed the upgrade from exotic was only minor given the amount of work put into obtaining it. I really enjoyed this game and want to come back but I don’t want to be board again. My question to the GW2 forums is: what does “end game” consist of these days. The new content every 2 weeks, how time consuming is it and how involved?

Thanks in advance!

So I took a break right when fractals came out. Just curious if any MAJOR changes happened to the thief class?

Still working on leveling my necro, but love to theory craft while at work

would love to hear your thoughts on http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fQAQRBHbhG2IjW6elmoGDfiY6B38m4ge8ec5MqCrD;TwAA2CqoyxkjIHbOuck5swYgxOjpIA
(may need to copy paste, tried adding it as a link and it didnt work)

Chances are for gear, I would give up some vit for more precision. Thinking PVE focused, play style would be to use both focus skills, #2 axe as I run in, swap weapons, pop horn #5 and horn #4, spam dagger #1 until hp goes down then use dagger #2. swap back to axe and focus, use #2 #4 #5 again, and repeat. pop heal as needed, and utilities when desired/needed. In a dungeon may kite a round a bit more with axe ranged auto to stack vulnerability.

would love to hear thoughts?

Easy way to fix the AI of Necro pets

At the very least, I would love F2 = go attack this target. Thats all I need.

A more extreme fix, which some of you may flame me for, but whatever…
Make deathshroud an elite. Keep the life force bar and have it fuel the duration of our elite forms, make death shroud an elite. Plague, lich, and deathshroud would all use the life force bar. lower the recast of all 3 slightly. Make our class mechanic in addition to life force fueling our elites a pet, similar to the Ranger mechanic. It would basically be a powerful flesh golem. Give it commands similar to the ranger pet, all minions summoned would follow commands given to the main pet.

a bit extreme, I know, but I was a die hard minion master in GW1 and although I’ve played GW1 necro in other builds, I’ll always choose minions over anything else and always associate minions as the necromancer cornerstone.

On the one hand, minions are mindless undead and shouldn’t have fantastic AI, however we are the minion’s master, we should be able to control them. Be it telling them all to attack or back off.

When the minions stand next to you and dont attack it is really frustrating – Almost as if all your trait points were wasted and you had no utility skills equipped.

So, I’ve been messing around on an alt necro and an alt ranger. The ranger pet AI seems to be much better than necro – not to mention the fact that you can control the ranger pet.

Logical solution = F2 makes pets attack target, F3 makes pets back off, F4 toggles passive or aggressive pets

Pistol whip is a kitten if you get hit by it. So is a dragons large AOE attack, or a warrior’s 100 blades, or any hard hitting attack… Dodge, thief is the most mobile class in the game IMO you should be able to get out of the way/always have a stun breaker ready to go.

Hmm, having trouble posting it, not sure why.
it is D/D with SB off set
using Hide in Shadows for my heal
swapping between caltrops and shadow refuge for #7
roll for initiative on #8
Signet of shadows on #9
swapping between dagger storm and thieves guild for my elite
0/20/25/0/25 for traits
for critical strikes I picked practiced tolerance and combo crit chance
for Shadow arts I picked infusion of shadow and hidden thief
for trickery I picked Thrill of the crime and bountiful theft
As far as runes go on armor I am leaning towards a full set of rune of the undead which gives a lot of condition dmg and some toughness followed by 5% of toughness goes towards condition damage.
I have a sigil of blood on each dagger which gives me 30% chance on crit to steal life with a 2 second cool down. On my bow I have a sigil of earth which has a 60% chance on crit to add bleeding.

Just trying to figure out If I should shift my focus away from condition damage and balance it out more or stay with condition dmg >precision/toughness.

I am not trying to build an Uber DPS class or anything, more of a balance between survival and dmg with some support thrown in.

So far my build seems to be working end game But I dont have exotic gear yet and I wanted to iron out what I build for before I spend the time and money.

Some friends suggested I have condition/precision/toughness on my armor and then go for power/precision/Vit on my jewelry. Not sure if that spread is good or not.

I will say the constant stealthing to drop targets helps an amazing amount with survival in addition to the rapid evading and ability to get out of dodge when needed. Sit back and pew pew pew with SB for a while if I need to.

Thanks for the replies thus far, would love more input

(also if you copy and paste the link into your URL bar it does work if you want)

(note i swap shadow refuge for caltrops and thieves guild for dagger storm pending situations)

I am rocking this now for end game PVE and dungeons sprinkled with some WVW here and there. I do have an alternative spec for WVW and PVP but if I am feeling lazy will use this and it seems to get me by. I am at the point where I am gearing out my toon with exotic gear and I am having trouble deciding on how to spec. I was leaning towards Condition DMG>precision/toughness>everything else. But after reading some posts I am told that condition DMG starts to taper off after 1200. Would it be worth gearing my spec more towards condition dog/precision>toughness>everything else? Or maybe throw in more of a focus on power and vitality? My spec play style is mostly skirmishing. I jump in and out a lot and rarely get hit, when I do I can recover fairly easily unless I get locked down and repeatedly hit. I mainly use death blossom and auto attack with daggers. If the enemy is low I will use a heart seeker or a back stab. W/ Bow I use pretty much everything situation pending. Anyway any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

@Arenanet: I am both a Mac and PC user, I just wanted to say thank you, between steam supporting Mac OS X and now you guys moving in that direction gaming on a mac seems to be more and more popular. I actually work for Apple and I am a huge gamer, the fact that companies are moving in this direction brings me so much joy, I truly want to thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Will the Mac client be a cider port or once the beta is over will you have a cocoa version?
