Hey,
Sorry if I am asking this in the wrong section.
So I just read the Fiery Dragon Sword is obtainable in GW2 if you have 10 Hall of Monuments points from the original Guild Wars 1.
I was thinking of buying the Eye of The North expansion. I haven’t played Guild Wars 1 in years would it be hard for me to fight/run my way from Boreal Station in to the Hall of Monuments?
After reading from the calculator I concluded:
3 Points from linking accounts (if I buy Eye of The North and go the HoM I’d get this for having all 4 campaigns)
3 Points for PvP Title. ( I have the gladiator title in GW1)
2+ for having any honor statue (PvP is in the honor section)
1+ Rare Minipet
1+ For having any mini pet.
=Total of 10 points in order to get the Fiery Dragon Sword in GW2.
I just wanted to make sure; do my calculations above seem correct?
-Thanks for your help!!
Hi rickyp.5240
The Intel i3 330u is a 1.2GHz processor with no Turbo boost.
The Intel i7 740QM is a 1.73GHz processor with Turbo upto 2.93GHzI would expect to see a difference, However I would not recommend this as an upgrade. These processors are not in the same thermal group so you could end up facing more problems then when you started.
The i3 330U is an Ultra Low-Voltage processor and is designed for small form factors with little thermal dissipation (18w thermal design power), you would expect to see this processor is a larger netbook or ultra thin notebook.
The i7 740QM is not an Ultra Low-Voltage processor and is designed for large portable form factors with sufficient thermal dissipation (45w thermal design power). You would expect to see this processor is something like 17’’ gaming laptops were there is usually larger heatsinks and bigger fans involved.
With that in mind you could potentially have an overheating issue on your hands, with more than double the thermal design power the i7 would probably overheat fast. And that is just the start, with processors the thermal design power is linked to the voltage they use, so not only could you have problems with the processor overheating, you could also be looking at having to find a power supply cappable of handling a higher wattage and with the right adapter to work with your laptop.
For these reasons alone you are usually better off just replacing the laptop with one capable of handling the tasks you want it to, rather than upgrading.
Good luck with whichever choice you make.
That is a great point! Thank you the laptop is less than an inch thick when closed so you’re right I didn’t even think of the heating problems that could arise. It would probably be best if I just thought about buying a new system.
Thanks again!!
You might see some improvement, but I don’t think it’d be 70 bucks worth of improvement.
The 310M isn’t exactly a new GPU, so I’m sure that is hindering your system a lot.
The 740QM is better than your i3, but its still first gen i3/i5/i7 and has faded out whereas sandy bridge and ivy bridge are still out and about. That and it’s only giving you about a half a Ghz improvement over your i3 with a couple extra cores.
If you do upgrade your CPU I can’t say how much it would help, but if it does, I can’t see a half a Ghz helping a tremendous amount, especially since GW2 loves fast single thread CPU’s (high Ghz, like 3.5Ghz+), especially in WvWvW.
Ahh its just as I feared.
Well I did find an i5 for about 40 dollars and its running @ 2.3ghz where as my current i3 runs at 1.3ghz think that 1ghz would make any significant difference in the game? Or would I be better off just thinking of buying a whole new system? Thanks again for the quick reply.
I have an old laptop at home its specs are:
Nvidia 310m 1gb memory
6gb ddr3 ram
Intel i3 U330
So this laptop is able to run the game on low – medium detail at a steady 25-35fps (depends on the action).
I read that the socket for my laptops processor is a G1 socket meaning I can replace the processor.
Would I see significant gains if I replace the Intel i3 U330 with a Intel i7 740QM?
I found the i7 for $70 on eBay and I know enough to opening hardware to where I would be able install it with ease. Plus I read the i7 740QM is a real quad core as apposed to this i3 which is a weak dual core.
-Thanks!
19% CPU utilization while running GW2 on your CPU is very low. Could be why you are having issues when turning camera. Should be closer to 60% with quad core. Maybe try high performance profile in power management?
I set the games processor priority to “Realtime” within the task manager it reduced some of the stuttering but not too much.
After doing a lot of reading I think its safe to say I’m bottlenecking with my CPU and GPU. I’m using an external GPU with an i5 M480 which is 2 cores and 2 virtual cores @2.7ghz.
I guess it doesn’t bottleneck in other games because they’re not as CPU demanding as this one is.
Edit: Btw Loahki try setting Guild Wars 2 as a priority in your task manager see if that makes any difference for you?
I monitored the CPU usage using the graphs in the Task Manager and I noticed that the CPU usage jumps from the average 19% or 22% up to 36% each time I turn the camera.
Hmm your core i5 is only at 19-22% CPU usage? Seems rather low. My core i5-3570K @4.2 uses 45-60% CPU while running around at solid 60fps capped.
Heres what I was reading.

Edit: Btw Loahki do your Nvidia drivers ever “Stop responding” then “recover” along with the other problems your facing?
(edited by rickyp.5240)
Monitor your CPU/GPU loads via graphs etc if there are spikes when turning around with tools like HwINFO or MSI-Afterburner. Try turning down shadows graphic settings.
With detail high or low the cameras still giving the same issue. But I monitored the CPU usage using the graphs in the Task Manager and I noticed that the CPU usage jumps from the average 19% or 22% up to 36% each time I turn the camera. Not sure if that means anything? I’m downloading MSI-Afterburner right now to see if the GPU is doing the same thing.
Is it possible that it is a hardware issue even if the other games I have on my PC run fine?
(edited by rickyp.5240)
it does recover though right?
as far as i can tell, this is because the game only fetches the network information for the player characters directly in front of the camera, and has to fetch the rest as you look around.
i don’t see any hdd access (more than usual) when this happens so i expect its network related.
Yea it bounces back up to 30-40fps after i’m done turning the camera but as soon as I turn it again it’ll go down. I thought the same thing I tested the game on very low detail on an old laptop (running on the same network) and it didn’t experience any drop in fps when i moved the camera. The laptop held a steady 25fps or (on low detail).
I Just reinstalled windows 7 along with all my drivers and the game on the computer but still no luck
Hello everyone,
Anyone else experiencing this problem? If I run forward and do not move my camera I get about 30-40fps on high detail… but as soon as I turn the camera I drop to about 8fps.
Basically any movement in the camera makes the game unplayable.
My hardware can run other games with no problem so I’m certain its not a hardware problem but maybe someone knows a fix around this issue?
I’ve tried multiple drivers including beta drivers for my graphics card.
I’ve done everything mentioned in the threads above by ArenaNet.
Any advice is much welcomed!
-Thanks
EVGA GeForce GTX 550TI

Hello.
So, my problem is that every time I boot up my game and log in or every time I map into a new map after being in one map a while I get extremely bad fps. As bad as 1fps for 5-6 sec, but it only happens if I turn my camera. If I just run straight after mapping/loging in its not a problem but as soon as I start looking around with the camera it lags out.
My system specs are:
ASUS GeForce GTX 670 2GB PhysX CUDA DirectCU II TOP
Intel Core i7-2600K Processor (Overclocked to 4.4 GHz)
8GB ram 1333MHz
The game is being run from an Intel SSD 120GB 330 Series
To be sure it’s not my graphics card or prossessor, I really didn’t think it was anything wrong with my hardware, but to be on the safe side, I monitored the performance and as far as I can see, there is no spike anywhere else then when I boot up my game and it’s stabile at that trough out my gaming session.
nVidia Drivers are up to date, no beta drivers. It is like this whether I’m on high settings or lower.
Ram usage is at max 85% while I’m running my usual programs on a normal day.
Not sure what else could be relevant but I thought it is worth telling you guys about it.
I’m having the exact same problem as you are bro.
I’m running
EVGA GeForce GTX 550TI
Intel i5 (1st Generation)
6GB DDRIII Ram
After a few tweaks I’m able to get the game to run at 30 – 40fps on meduim/high detail but as soon as I turn my camera I drop down to 9fps. If you’ve found out how to fix this let me know. I’ll also keep you posted if I can find a way to fix this.
Indeed try OC’ing.
If you dont get the performance your looking for then your only other option is to upgrade your CPU and motherboard to a Intel i5 or better with an OC to around 4.5ghz. That will give a minimum average of 30 fps in large WvW battles.
As good as AMD are for their price, their single thread performance is lacking compared to intel and its that same single thread performance that GW2 takes alot of its performance from.
This is terrible advice don’t do it! Your computer is just fine there seems to be a major issue with most Nvidia cards….
I have a laptop with GW2 and a desktop with an i5 and a GTX 550ti.
Believe it or not the laptop which has a mobile i5 sandybridge and an intel hd3000 is able to get more FPS and on higher detail than my GTX 550ti… this makes no sense! I know for a fact the desktop has no hardware problems because its running other games just fine on max detail. With this being said dude I wouldn’t bother wasting money or hurting your CPU by OC’ing it… your set up is on the higher end of average and you should be able to play GW2 it makes no sense that a 550ti with a decent processor can’t even run the game at playable speeds on the lowest of detail! You aren’t the only one with this problem hopefully it’ll get resolved soon by Anet as soon as they open their eyes and realize the problem is on their side.
game doesn’t use physx for that option to be of any difference to the game.
If you Google, you will know that this “fix” has helped tons of people even when games do not use physx. Check out the links for League of Legends, Wow and even Black Ops.
This is for people who crashes with the – Nvidia Driver Stopped working and has Recovered message
Hate to be the bearer of bad news but I also have the same issue as her I know for a 100% fact my card isn’t overheating either and I set the physx as GPU only and still crashes…
If you read the well over one thousand other similar posts here in this forum you just might come to the conclusion the rest of us have … that most of these problems are on ArenaNet’s end. Don’t hold your breath waiting for a solution,
^ I agree… I’m running the same graphics card as you are and although the game didn’t crash it does hit a black screen sometimes and I only get about 5fps on the lowest settings… I know for a 100% fact its not a problem on my side I reinstalled windows 7 and reinstalled all my graphics drivers… all my other games are running just fine except Guild Wars 2 is unplayable…
Can we just get a nice response and an ETA, Anet? I think that would put us all to ease knowing that it’s legitimately getting worked on and are being heard. Continuing this thread is kind of pointless. We all know there are issues.
I agree… I’m running on:
Intel i5
Nvidia GeForce GTX 550ti
6gb DDRIII Ram
Windows 7 64-bit
I have my graphics drivers up to date did a clean installation. Have the latest windows service pack installed ect. After a bit of tweaking I managed to get the game to run at 30-40fps average on medium/high detail… but any movement in my camera seems to bring the fps down to about 9. If I don’t move the camera and just simply run with my character then the fps will stay at 40 or so. Hopefully there is a way to fix this.
