It’s hard to have any server pride when things come and go with the flow of the transfers. I can understand them keeping the transfers open for PvE players, but man, why there aren’t additional restrictions in place by now is beyond me. One transfer per week, or 3 free transfers max, or no WvW access for a week after transfer, or something.

Why You Should always Zerg in WvW

@Felix – No thanks. We already have issues with guilds claiming locations when they have no buffs to provide (which is the ONLY reason a guild should be claiming a location). The last thing we need is more guilds rushing to claim something when they have nothing to offer that will help hold it.

For the people that want the AOE cap removed – please explain how to take Garrison or Hills if this was implemented. I’ve seen instances where in assaulting Garrison, the water gate and bridge after the inner west gate were unbreakable due to AOE spam. Hills is even worse – it’s already regarded as the most difficult keep to assault due to cliffs that funnel people to the outer gates and the bridge at the middle inner gate (where, incidentally, you can block the doorway with a catapult and hold it with 10 people against 50).

The reward from capturing an objective should scale on the amount of time its been held, the number of people that die in proximity to it prior to the capture, and the number of upgrades it has. Why this wasn’t implemented from the start is beyond me.

Samfisher, JQ has had absurdly long queues since GW2 was released. We were the first server to hit full population (within about 30 minutes after the 3 day headstart began). I rather doubt there’s much space available for most transfers, or that they’ll make the queues longer than they already are. By comparison, HoD was (I believe) medium pop when TA set up shop there?

That’s not what he’s saying. Using a system that scans for known hacks on the client is like is like plugging holes in a leaky old boat – there’s always going to be more of them and you’ll always be behind.

The correct solution is to assume all information received from the client is unreliable and have it confirmed by the server doing calculations of its own.

> You can’t expect them to have an algorithm to check to see who spent siege.

Sure I can. If siege weapon dropped by X does greater than Y wall/door damage, double event reward for X. There’s nothing intrinsically difficult or unfair about this. And 2g40s (6s per person, 40 man group) is still crap, honestly; fully upgrading a keep costs 5g+, not including any siege you might be putting on the walls (or the money/effort required to take it).

Keep capture rewards were much greater at release and were cut down because sides would trade them to get the reward over and over. My point is that its been a month since then and this is not a hard fix. Even having a running tally of deaths in the proximity of the location and basing the value off that would work.

> JQ is now more populated, or at least, now has more active players actually playing at a given time than HoD.

Server population does not equal WvW population.

rndmize.9274

Well, I’m done for the week. The orb hacking on Friday was very disappointing, and now ET can’t even put enough people out to man more than two maps (as of 10 PM PST). So it looks like its us vs. HoD for the rest of the week, except for the hours of the morning when its HoD vs 1/4 of us.

And I’m tired of the crap rewards we get on taking a keep or tower. Six silver for an upgraded keep? Give me a break. That covers four deaths or 1/4 of a treb. If you have issues with people trading locations to make money, then figure something else out. Maybe the capture value goes up as upgrades are added. Maybe it goes up over time, or when they hold an orb. None of these should be hard to implement.

There was a thread in the bugs forum two days ago about using one of thief’s underwater skills to bypass walls in keeps. There was a video about it today on reddit. Word is this has been an issue since early beta weekends. And still no changes? I’m fairly confident this is by no means “working as intended” the way mesmer portals are, or we’d have to consistently have a decent sized group of players just to watch over orbs at keeps (not much fun).

And there’s still the issues of badges and kill credit. I have a guardian with a DPS spec and I still get crap loot. Three hours of running around killing people and getting four badges is absurd. It would be worse if I had a practical guardian spec that could actually help my side with shields and the like for siege… but really, who’s going to waste time with that when all it gets you is higher repair costs? “Good job man, you helped us take that tower! Here’s 1.8 silver and a couple hundred karma.”

I like WvW a lot. It’s 75% of what I do in-game. I’ve hauled my guild into weekly sessions on Fridays. But it feels like the issues (basic issues) are piling up and nothing is being done. Seeing stuff like this is sapping what patience I have left. Who’s going to waste hours of planning and organization and a gold or two worth of siege to capture an orb that’s going to be jacked within the next day or less?

Here is whats wrong with WvW

in WvW

Posted by: rndmize.9274

rndmize.9274

This is what’s broken in wvw. No personal incentive to defend – no defense.

Wait what? Defending has an associated event and reward with it, for any location short of sentries (and I’m pretty sure those have them as well, actually, but its near impossible to get).

In fact, a good defense against a big/stupid zerg is potentially much more lucrative than running around capping stuff endlessly. I’ve seen people get 10 or 20 or 30 loot bags from mass killings with arrow carts over a span of 10-odd minutes (which means 3 full defense events and associated rewards on top of that).

Personally, I think a lot of people just like attacking places more than defending them. Defending doesn’t really have a defined point where you’ve “won”, while attacking clearly does.

This is pretty frustrating stuff, but I can’t really blame ET as a whole for it. Anet should implement something simple, like requiring that the altar take damage from 3+ different people before breaking, at least as a stop-gap measure. Or perhaps provide a bounty for detailed bug/exploit reports (as Google and Microsoft do). 2k gems for a bug report that leads directly to a fix, or something.

Speak for your own server, BleedOrange. How is it that we have the worst personalities when nothing has changed except the tables have turned? Two weeks ago there was a torrent of ridicule dumped on “JQQ” for complaining about 2v1 while “Steelbluff” patted themselves on the back for being on HoD’s level. Now we have a precise opposite situation, where I’ve seen exactly the same claims of “2v1” and “JQ playing for 2nd” from SBI players and chest-thumping from JQ. Even HoD has done precisely the same thing; two weeks ago they were congratulating SBI, this week they were congratulating JQ.

The fact of the matter is both servers have thousands of players, and a few boasters and complainers here and there are in no way representative of each server’s population. Deriding the opposing server in a manner that doesn’t involve direct insults (as you are doing) doesn’t put you above the fray – it makes you a part of it.

As for TA breaking up, why would we be happy? A victory over them would be worthy of celebration; having a better shot at first now because they’ve broken up is a sore disappointment.

Yet Another Orb Thread

Posted by: rndmize.9274

rndmize.9274

Thanks for your feedback. Maybe I am misunderstanding something here. Is the home server able to zerg their Orb at the Cradle of Power, and bring it to their Garrison?

The home server can’t touch the orb until it has been removed from the starting altar. They’re effectively required to zerg one of the sides attacking or to try and defend the default location (losing proposition). My general point was that things are more dynamic when any server has a reasonably equal chance to get the orb rather than having to start with a siege. Because the paths to carry the orb to a keep run along the spawn position of the home server, they have a number of opportunities to try and take it back, even if they can’t take it from the altar initially.

Yet Another Orb Thread

in WvW

Posted by: rndmize.9274

rndmize.9274

Having a reset every 24 hours would mean that after someone secures the orb, no one would bother trying to get it. After the first day, you can expect most keeps to be at least partially if not fully upgraded. 12 hour buffs would make assaults even more difficult. Why would you bother if you can just wait a day for the reset and try again?

Here’s an alternative concept that might help with the “strong getting stronger” everyone complains about.

On securing an orb, the holder is given three choices – minor bonus, major bonus, superior bonus. The minor bonus gives a 3% stat bonus, the major gives 5% (same as current), and the superior gives 7% (could be 2-5-8, or 3-6-9, or whatever, depending on balance).

The minor bonus becomes active immediately, as orbs currently do.

The major bonus requires a ramp-up time – half an hour per 1 percent of power. As such, it would take an two hours before the 5% bonus is fully applied (ramp would start at 1%, not 0). The duration of 12 hour guild bonuses would also be halved if applied to a keep with an orb in major mode.

The superior bonus would also require a ramp-up time – two hours per 1 percent of power (12 hour ramp). 12 hour guild bonuses would last only 3 hours. Further, no orb bonus would be active for the defending players in the vicinity of the keep.

The numbers in this example are all adjustable. Bonuses could be larger, smaller, have a wider spread. Ramp-up times could be different. The local disadvantages for choosing higher levels of power could be different.

Regardless, the point would be that orbs often might not take effect immediately, encouraging opposing sides to fight harder while they’re ramping up. The disadvantages of choosing a superior bonus might mean a world would have to deploy their best guilds to hold it – a “hard mode” effect, since if the other worlds have an orb or two, the defenders will actually be at a stat disadvantage. (Not to mention that an keep with an orb in superior mode is likely to attract a lot more attention from the opposing worlds than a keep with a major or minor).

Another interesting mechanic might be a “sacrifice” option. On activation, the orb charges for an hour before finally exploding (possible side effect – kill everyone in the keep?). Three hours after the explosion, the orb resets to its default location. This option might be useful if you fear your keep will be overrun during a long, grinding siege; it might also be handy if you have a fear of nightcapping. Set the orb to blow an hour before your server’s expected low-pop hours and hope you have enough people to pick it up three hours later. These mechanics could even be tied together – an orb that is captured while charging from the sacrifice might have a reduced ramp-up time – or none.

In any case, I’d rather see mechanic changes that allow for greater player choice and more complex strategy around orbs, rather than less. The majority of balance issues should sort themselves out as people learn to play and the world rankings adjust.

Yet Another Orb Thread

in WvW

Posted by: rndmize.9274

rndmize.9274

There’s a number of flaws in your analysis. First, the most serious bit of orb fighting is right after the reset, when all three sides should be going for it. There are no well-fortified keeps at this point. In fact I would be surprised if any side could complete more than a single keep upgrade before someone deposits it in a keep. Because of this, what you get is actually a very dynamic battle for the first six hours.

For some anecdotal evidence, I was in a borderlands at the start last Friday. We rushed for the orb, grabbed it, and started running back to our keep – only to be killed by HoD en route. They were unable to secure the orb in time, so we waited for the reset and tried again. We got the orb after the reset, but failed to get as far as the first time, let alone back to our keep. HoD managed to haul it off to their garrison this time. What followed was two hours of crazy fighting, siege and a wide variety of strategies, eventually resulting in our capturing the orb, where it stayed for the next couple days.

I like the current mechanism because it actually allows a wide variety of strategies on the part of the world in the top position of the borderland. Should you mass at the orb’s spawn location and kill everyone that shows? Mass at garrison, let one side take it, then intercept them? Perhaps you consider one opponent to be a significantly greater threat than the other; you could send your forces to intercept them before they even get to the orb, so that the other side is guaranteed to take it. Or perhaps you consider a specific keep easier to assault than another, in which case you might want to let the side holding that keep take it. Let us not forget that there’s a variety of chokes, tight paths and cliffs on the way to the orb that lend themselves to all varieties of uses (blocking, ambush, AOE siege, assault from flank/back, etc.)

The core problem is (and has been) that the average WvW player doesn’t understand the importance of orbs. As that changes, I think they’ll become much less of an issue.

On last look, JQ and HoD fighting over SBI turf.

One question, those of you from JQ, would you knowingly attack SBI moreso than HoD (NOT an alliance) to attempt to displace the easier of the two targets?

I was interested to see what you were talking about, so I logged on to check the map. It appears to me that you guys aren’t fielding anyone on the HoD borderlands; note the only crossed swords are top right between HoD and JQ. JQ borderlands has a fairly neutral split, though we hold HoD’s keep; hardly us attacking your turf. EB is in a neutral layout, and the SBI borderlands are clearly being dominated by us; a few minutes before I took this screenshot, HoD didn’t have a single location held there.

And while I can hardly speak for others, I’ve spent every last minute I’ve had in WvW against HoD (with the obvious exception of retaking our default territory from SBI raids). Grabbing your territory is usually only worth it if you don’t have enough people on the map to man it anyway.

My view on WvW

in WvW

Posted by: rndmize.9274

rndmize.9274

All of this has been discussed in detail. If you want a solution that deals with nightcapping, there’s better ones. Sliding population caps based on the number of players fielded by the two lower pop servers, sliding point value based on how much a side is outnumbering the others, etc.

Furthermore, I’m not even sure why you created this topic. There’s a sticky at the top for nightcapping discussion, and the first post specifically says:

This is not saying that we are against any adjustment to scoring, or against developing another mechanic to improve the capping system. This is simply saying that we will not be changing WvW based on some players’ idea of off time hours.

(Emphasis added.)

The “switch orbs with outmanned” was all over the first page of topics two weeks ago and still shows up about once a day now. There’s nothing wrong with orbs, they’re not overpowered. • The first structural upgrade for supply camps may well be the most important upgrade in the game. Being able to ship twice as much supply per dolyak to your associated keep/tower means upgrades will be built that much faster.
  • Borderlands keeps, ranked in order of difficulty to capture (most to least, assuming local control): Hills, Garrison, Bay. This has direct implications on which maps you should aim to capture/hold orbs.
  • The +5 supply carry bonus is a level 2 Art of War buff that costs 200 influence and takes 16 hours to research. There’s no reason you shouldn’t have it active on your most important supply camps at least 75% of the time.
  • You have to activate “build” a second time to use the 5 extra supply.
  • You can start researching a guild buff again as soon as you activate it.
  • Trebs built at the edge of the cliffs at Garrison (for the purpose of hitting Bay) can be quickly destroyed by a ballista at the foot of the cliffs.
  • Large groups of players moving towards a location will almost always kill sentries. Checking your map for disappeared sentries is crucial to doing well on your home borderlands.
  • Mesmers. Portals. Portal chains. ’nuff said.
  • One of the tier 4 guild buffs grants 10% extra health. Ten. Percent. More. Health.
  • A keep with a waypoint that’s under attack can still be teleported to for about one second between the current defend event finishing and the next one starting.

And of course…

  • If force isn’t working, you aren’t using enough of it.

I think you underestimate us, though. We fought HoD quite a bit more than you in the 24 hour matches, so we’ve had a healthy respect for what they can do for a while (which it feels like you guys only really got last week).

And so far, regardless of the 40k point lead HoD has had for a while now, I’m not seeing any major signs of giving up on our side. It took me at least half an hour to get into one of the borderlands this evening, and there was a queue for every map but EB by about 8 AM PST this morning. I’ve seen the same commanders on in mornings and evenings, often for crazy stretches of time. Two weeks ago we lost badly and ended up third; this time it’ll be closer; next week, it should be closer still. As long as we keep improving our organization, use better tactics and strategy, nail down what objectives and upgrades are important, gear our guild members, and have more guilds with maxed AoW buffs available, we’ll close the gap, one step at a time.

Zero response in team chat asking who claimed it, if they had buffs to activate, or anything else. Not surprisingly, we lost it half an hour later. There was another thread asking how this was done which said HoD found a breach in the inner walls but not the outer. Last I checked, for a lot of people it is about winning. If it was purely about fun, why did you queues drop? The mechanics of WvW don’t change much if you’re winning or losing, and it’s generally enjoyable unless you’re pushed back to spawn.

This is probably the dumbest thing someone can ask me, I’ll leave you to your own devices and perhaps you can figure this elusive question out.

I didn’t ask you. Here, let me help you out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhetorical_question

It looks like several others already addressed most of your points, but I take particular beef with the idea that there’s no strategy. There’s plenty, and it exists on multiple levels. It just requires some preparation, planning, and coordination to do.

For an obvious example of strategy, I was on the Henge borderlands Friday evening. We captured the orb HoD had in their garrison after several direct failed direct assaults on the keep by doing the following: launching an attack on the outer right wall of garrison, staging a retreat to the tower we held nearby to bait HoD’s forces out, and then leaving them to assault our tower while we rounded to the garrison water gate and did a rush job to seize the keep and orb.

For an example of strategy on a different level, last week SBI had all three orbs as late as Sunday evening. If they’d worked out some planning and coordination, they could have pulled all their forces off EB to hold the orbs in the borderlands (I strongly suspect they had enough people to field full crews on at least two borderlands if not all three). Even if they could only have held two of the orbs overnight, this would have been a tremendous advantage for the crew that came on the next day. Let’s further note that defenders have some major advantages in guild Art of War bonuses. Had they dropped full sets of 12 hour bonuses on the keeps where they held the orbs at 12 AM PST, that would have been a strong boon for the night crews, equivalent roughly to a fourth orb.

None of this strikes me as impossible to arrange or even particularly difficult if you have some way to communicate with a majority of your WvW players. JQ’s TS usually has at least half the people on a map in it, and we don’t strike me as the most coordinated of servers.

As a final point, I feel that HoD primarily wins through use of good strategy. They established the importance orbs much earlier than other servers, I believe they were the first to use mesmer portals, and they play for the long haul. I suspect every other US server would have given up the match as lost after the heavy weekend beating HoD got in last week’s match: no orbs, constant 2v1, SBI far ahead in points. HoD did not, and came back for a massive win. Their night crew strikes me as merely the most obvious strong point among many.

Until the other servers start planning out ways to deal with HoD’s advantages, maximize their own strengths and minimize their weaknesses (this is called strategy), we’ll continue to see more of the same.

Mdmize,

r n dmize…

Uh…..nice novel?

It was meant for the people discussing the issues between JQ and SBI. If four paragraphs of text is too much for you, you could… I dunno… skip it?

SBI wvw queues have been nearly instant all this week. It kind of means…..you know…that no one is really playing?

I kind of… you know… mentioned that.

WvW isn’t about real strategy its just about having huge numbers. If there are no numbers there won’t be much progress.

There’s plenty of good strategy in WvW. And from the queue charts that were posted, HoD’s numbers at night are better, but they aren’t all that much better. HoD is, in the end, actually very good.

What you misunderstand is that its not about winning, before there were no complaints about what place you ranked in. It was purely about fun, its more about being competitive. And there is nothing competitive above going against a doors and npcs while real people sleep at night. And personally I do not blame them.

Last I checked, for a lot of people it is about winning. If it was purely about fun, why did you queues drop? The mechanics of WvW don’t change much if you’re winning or losing, and it’s generally enjoyable unless you’re pushed back to spawn.

As for being competitive, there’s a sticky at the top of this forum that basically says “nightcapping is a valid tactic”. If you want to be competitive at the highest level, organize. Have commanders rotate shifts. Recruit off-peak people and guilds. The devs have said that if you want things to be nice and fair and even, there’s sPVP, and that WvW is meant to balance itself.

The idea I’ve gotten is that two weeks ago, SBI thought they were pretty good when they went up against HoD and JQ. They were pulling second and seemed to have figured that the next week if they focused on HoD, they’d be bound to win. And for the weekend after that match started, it even looked like they were right. They had a major point lead, all three orbs, etc. Then Sunday night rolled around and HoD pretty much shredded them overnight. And then again repeatedly, for the rest of the week.

During the first week, there was a lot of complaining about on JQ’s side about SBI working with HoD. While that wasn’t true, I think there’s a kernel of accuracy there. JQ, as a server, went through twice as many matches against HoD in the 24-hour battles as SBI did and thus, probably developed a much healthier respect for how much better HoD is than everyone else. SBI, not so much. As a result, JQ was willing to expend a majority of its effort fighting HoD (ET has been similarly focused in their matches), while SBI had a fairly even split of effort between HoD and JQ. This naturally lead to the complaints of 2v1 from JQ. The match ended with JQ sorely kitten off at SBI for a bunch of talking down, JQQ, etc.

Now, two weeks later, SBI has finally gotten a proper taste of what HoD can bring to the table and took a bad enough beating that their queues have apparently fallen off. From JQ’s perspective, this is vindication. Returned taunting from a kitten off opponent is hardly unexpected, especially when SBI is currently in third (demonstrating that, in fact, SBI is not any better than JQ/ET and plays a far second to HoD).

This analysis involves a lot of guesswork though, so I could be wrong on a variety of points.

With all that said, I saw some good action from SBI tonight on the JQ borderlands. JQ and SBI were both pushing toward HoD’s keep from opposite sides, where they currently hold map’s orb. Aside from some supply camp trading, both sides kept the majority of their pressure on HoD. Sadly, even after four hours, it seems that neither side has gotten past the outer walls of the keep, which just goes to show how strong HoD is (and especially this late at night). But focusing on key objectives instead of squabbling over towers (from both sides) is a big improvement. Here’s to hoping that the gap between HoD and everyone else closes in the coming weeks.

If I was on SBI or JQ I’d hope that we could work together to smash HoD then turn around stab the other in the back and take home the win. But that’s just me. If one server shows themselves to dominant, for any reason, other servers SHOULD team up and take them down, regardless of how you may think it looks.

Your statement presumes some reasonable degree of global strategic thinking on SBI and JQ. The problem is both servers fall far short in this department.

Just this morning/last night, we (JQ) lost the orb we’ve been holding on your borderlands. Why? Because apparently, no one was manning the keep holding it. Instead, our crew was off picking at SBI’s already pitiful holdings on the map.

Similarly, on our own borderlands last night, HoD was beating down and took our garrison, which was near-impossible to defend due to SBI zergs making loops around the upper section of the map, capturing camps and towers. SBI could have been attacking your holdings from the south with an eye for the orb you hold in the Bay, but I have yet to see such an effort.

The problem seems twofold: first, too many people don’t understand what objectives are strategically important (orbs, Orbs, ORBS); and second, too many people would prefer to hit the nearest easy-looking target rather than focus on long-term strategic gain. Until both servers shape up in this area, I don’t see HoD falling from its throne.

(Side note: ET seems to have much better focus/direction than JQ or SBI and my guess is they would be a real contender for #1 if they could mass people at the appropriate times).

yes a few ppl on SBI are crying in a corner right now after last week, but after last night forum posting from JQ even more have stop crying and decided if we can’t have 1st we’re taking JQ down with us after your trashing talking really PO’d us so if you feel like we’re 2v1ing you

we are, though idk why HoD is going after you

On part of SBI i leave you with how we truely feel right now about JQ

They’re not, at least from what we’ve seen within the last hour. They’re working together now.

Check your map again. I was on 20 minutes ago and we were only pushing HoD on their borderlands, our borderlands were split between HoD and SBI, SBI’s borderlands were mostly held by SBI and HoD, and SBI was being pushed out of eternal by HoD and us. So in short, we were double teaming you on one map and you were double teaming us on two.

Woooow. I wasn’t going to say anything since omnifox already hit the main points, but really? A $3k card for gaming? That’s optimized for CAD?

I don’t suppose you got some Monster cables to go along with that?

Very proud with the fight SBI put up at the Garrison under the circumstances. Good defense HoD/Jade “playing for second from the start” Quarry

You’re a funny guy. I’ve been on the JQ borderlands for the last several hours and its been sad to watch SBI running zergs along the top curve of the map back and forth, capping our towers and supply while HoD was beating down our garrison. Good job splitting the map between between you and HoD. Joke’s on you guys though, as it looks like you’re about to lose your spawn tower to Henge now that they’ve run out of our stuff to take…

What happened to all that SBI pride from two weeks ago when it was all “JQQ can’t do anything but whine”? All I see these days from you guys is complaining about HoD’s night crew, making excuses about empty maps because people are tired of losing to HoD, etc. Now you’ve even bringing out the same tired “playing for second” and “omg 2v1” stuff you were so derisive of before.

Well, it looks like it doesn’t really matter. We ripped the orb on HoD’s borderlands from their garrison last night, so we have a +5% bonus and HoD has a +10%. Until you guys can get it together and take one yourselves, expect to stay in third.
