I have 9 level 80’s across 2 accounts, none of them wearing any ascended armor, many are still running with exotic weapons. I’ve completed everything except for the last fight in LWS2 and LWS3 (mainly because I’ve been waiting to coordinate game time with my brother so we can do them together). I do have a few exotic weapons – I’ve crafted some of them, and some are from the elite specialization collections. What I’m trying to say is, you’re basically fine as you are, just have fun.
Having said that, here’s what I’d do in your shoes:
1. Story completion on at least one character. You know the story and it’s basically a free mastery point for each episode/chapter. Who doesn’t want mastery points? Including all the season 3 episodes you have unlocked. Again, mastery points and experience facing tougher mobs.
2. Harvest everything. Ascended gear takes quite a bit of resources – unless you get a drop.
3. LWS3 Maps offer ascended rings, back pieces, amulets, and trinkets for map currencies. Get a full set of trinkets – they’re stat selectable.
4. Craft ascended weapons BEFORE ascended armor.
5. Ascended armor can be stat swapped in the mystic forge, so, if money or mats are not an issue, you can make them now and swap stats in the future IF you find that you need to. Keep in mind that part of the materials for ascended is time gated so that you can only make one per day. START making those now – Spool of Thick Elonian Cord, Spool of Silk Weaving Thread, Lump of Mithrillium, and Glob of Elder Spirit Residue.
Good stuff, thank you! Couple more questions xD
3. I think I have couple one I got with Laurels, are those the same? Can I swap on those too? I have with berserker stats, but I wish I could make them Viper now.
4. I got one from drop yesterday, but the stats were crap, healing, toughness… something. So I can switch that?
5. Oh, I didn’t know that. Will start soon enough.
I just got back to the game, I have 5 lvl80 characters, none of them really complete. Most using exotic gear at max.
So I’m thinking, I want to prepare for the expansion. I don’t really have time to do everything, so I need to focus.
What should I prioritize?
- Map completion
- Story completion
- Should I craft ascended gear or wait?
- What kind of things should I store?
- Anyt goal I should try to achieve?
Sorry it is a lot of questions, but I’m really lost.
I can’t really buy gems because I don’t have the money and I save most of my gold for gear and more useful stuff, most of my gear is exotic, no Ascended yet, so I save all the gold I can.
But… my character looks pretty ugly in general, I have the generic looks but none of the cool ones.
Any cool skin would make me really happy. I just want to look like the cool kids :\

No need to wait for anything, the expac will just give you more options.
Ranger OR druid can be played with a bow, and it’s extremely, extremely strong in open world stuff.
But more importantly, every profession has a viable ranged option.
Unless you want to do raids, that’s about all you need to know. Raids use more specific builds and LB ranger isn’t used there, for example.
Oh, that is good to know.
Raid is probably the very last thing I will do, but I would like to do Fractals for example.
Also I play mostly solo and I’m yet to clear the whole map, so yeah, I have a lot to do before the more “hardcore” content.
Oh, just noticed there is a new expasion soon, should I just play whatever and wait?
Hey guys, I just got back to GW2, first time playing HoT.
My question is simple. Are any ranged classes/playstyles viable atm?
It seems like the generic Ranger type with bow and long range is no longer played because of the specializations.
I usually don’t like to play melee but I don’t want to build a character that no one will want in the group, you know.
Can you help me? Thank you
I forgot to say I have plenty of MMO experience, I player Lineage 2, WoW, ESO… together for about 10 years or more.
I know how to deal with group situations, buffs, support, combat awareness and all that.
So Im not a complete noob, just a bit rusty.
=D
Hey guys, Im returning to the game after about a year and Im looking for some friends.
=]
If you got a small, growing guild, that would be perfect for me. As a returning player I would like to join a guild that is not big yet so we can develop together.
I dont mind using TS when necessary, but Im not a big fan of staying there while I play by myself. I like guild chats quite a bit. xD (im shy)
Oh, Im 27, Im a guy (now I wont get any invite), Im from Brazil (huehuehuehue) and I play mostly at nights and on weekends.
Like every game there is good and bad tactics.
Healing, regen, defensives stats, etc are view as bad support. They can do the job, but poorly in PvE because the game was designed this way.
Protection, Vigor, reflection, blocks, condition removal, etc on the the other end are view as good support.
Good point.
I came from a year playing ESO where we have the usual DPS/Heal/Tank thing and the traditional MMO roles. It is hard to get used to the way GW2 works. Specially in group situations.
Well… I’m a Guardian so that is a good start. :p
In most multiplayer games I play I like the support role, either the healer/buffer or the disabler/debuffed are playstyles that I really enjoy.
That said, if I focus only on that, trying to make my character as supportive as possible. Will people want me in their groups? Is it viable?
Im asking because in GW2 we don’t have the “Holy Trinity”, that way we don’t exactly need a healer, or a tank.
So after trying a lot of different stuff I finally decided to play a GS/Staff*Focus.
I like that Im pretty mobile with the Greatsword, with Whirling Wrath for a close combat AoE/Single target DPS. The area of retaliation and also that one that pulls enemies to you.
For the staff*focus I enjoyed the immobilize and the ground AoE of the staff with the healing/mitigation of the focus skills.
I don’t know how this is gonna work in the long run, with all the passives, traits, etc. But right now Im loving it.
What do you guys think of that combo?
From “omg not a … again” to “yay, i love to play with …” in a group situation.
Can you put the classes in an order?
I know Necros are not very welcome in all groups.
Thx for the answers btw, I know they are pretty annoying =p
I remember there was some kind of training dummies. Where is that? At what level can I reach them?
I could easily just test everything and see what I like best.
Yeah… I played ESO last year and got used to have a main weapon for DPS and a secondary for support.
I think in GW2 we use both weapons for all purposes, right?
To get the best use of the cooldowns and stuff.
It is hard to change your mind when you are already used to do something.
So the meta is to think of the weapon set as a whole, not one weapon do this and the other do that, right?
Not enough information. Your description fits the following:
1. Staff/Scepter mainhand Elementalist with Lightning Hammer summon or Dagger mainhand Elementalist with Flame Axe summon.
2. Hammer or sword/mace|shield warrior with Longbow secondary.
3. Sword-pistol thief with Shortbow secondary.
4. Rifle engineer with bomb and tool kits.
5. Sword ranger with longbow secondary.
6. Dagger necromancer with scepter secondary.
7. Sword mainhand mesmer with greatsword secondary.Guardians are the only class you cannot play this in as they have no viable ranged condition weapon.
All of these are survivable in melee using entirely different methods.
Okay, let me see what else I can put out to help you help me. xD
I like the warrior archetype (no specificly the class) you know, big guy, heavy armor, big weapons. Maybe the secondary doesnt need to be a ranged weapon. But I like having a main thing and a support thing.
I dont really like the elusive type of DPS, like a rogue.
(Btw in this meantime Im trying some characters, I just post here while Im at work)
Hmmmm so Im guessing Ranger wont do. I would like to be mainly melee, and ranged just for support purposes or when I cant reach the target.
I think Guardian or Warrior would be my best options then.
(edited by rsiloliveira.6429)
I watched a couple videos… do you think a Ranger GS/Bow would be good?
Ouch.
I just came back to the game. Is it really that frustrating to get the traits now? Does it take a lot of effort?
More along the lines of being annoying than great effort. If you need to kill a particular champ or do a particular event and they are on cooldown you just have to wait around. Some events are bugged while the Orrian temples can have relatively long respawn time. There are also things like map completion and doing WvW stuff.
Also characters created before the trait changes are not affected. They get all the traits unlocked.
Ah, I see. I will probably just buy the most annoying ones then. xD
Thanks for the info
Ouch.
I just came back to the game. Is it really that frustrating to get the traits now? Does it take a lot of effort?
How expensive it is to unlock all?
Hey guys, would you help me with this?
I have a playstyle in mind but I don’t know what class/weapon combination would fit.
I wanna be a melee damage dealer with a bit of survivability. I don’t need to be able to take 5 enemies down solo, but, being a melee, I need to survive head on battles. Ideally a good weapon combination would work like this:
1 – Melee DPS with a gap closer, a stun/knockback/etc and a decent AoE damage.
2 – Ranged DPS for support purposes, snaring enemies, putting conditions, etc.
I don’t need to be the highest DPS or the tougher to kill, that I can handle with my abilities :p
But yeah, that is kinda it… can you help me?
(That is pretty generic, but I can give more infos if needed =D)
(edited by rsiloliveira.6429)
What did they change about the Traits? I didn’t really get it. I don’t remember how it was before. I will start a new character anyway, it is hard to come back after a year to a high level character.
Btw thanks for the infos guys, very helpful.
:)
More questions:
6) Are all classes sought after for grouping? I play a lot solo, but I don’t want to be a burden when in groups you know, I like supporting either with buffs or some exclusive ability that might be helpful.
7) Champion farm still a thing? I remember it was quite cool running around the starting areas killing the Champions.
8) Any tips on YouTube channels that might help choosing a build?
(edited by rsiloliveira.6429)
Hello again peepz, couple more questions for ya:
Fyi, last time I played was about a year ago.
1) Is there any class/playstyle that is just so OP that you see them everywhere? PvP or PvE
(If I recall correctly dagger/dagger Eles were like that when I played)
I ask that because I like being effective but I don’t like being like everyone, you know?
2) With that in mind… any suggestions? Like a playstyle that is cool and effective but not everyone plays, or is underated.
3) I don’t remember what server I was (still re-downloading client). I might need to change in order to play with my friends. Is this possible? Is it a paid service?
4) Is there any way to measure you DPS (like WoW, ESO) or you kinda have to guess based on the numbers you see?
5) I think I have two lvl80 characters, but I would like to start fresh. Can I transfer gold, karma… everything to my new character so I don’t lose it?
That is it for now, kinda random questions. I hope someone can help.
Thank you =D
Hello guys! How is it going?
So I played GW2 for a couple months before ESO was launched. Since then I play ESO all the time. That said, I do not like the changes they are making to the game and I’m considering coming back to GW2.
I have two lvl 80 (? max) characters, Necromancer and…Rogue.
I have some generic questions and I appreciate any feedback on that.
1) How is the overall performance of the game? Does it crash a lot, have lags, bugs, that sort of thing.
2) What is to do at End Game? I remember this was an issue back then.
3) WvWvW is balanced? People still enjoy it? What other PvP content is available?
4) I like challenging end game things, like raids, dungeons… we have that?
5) Does the Cash Shop only sell vanity items?
6) Would you make a comment about the game as a whole and your perspectives?
I know some questions are more personal, but I want to know before hopping in again.
Thank you!
I’d love to have bows that aren’t kittenting out flowers and ponies. Hopefully whoever was responsible for the joke legendary designs (Quip/Bows etc) has “moved on to pursue other interests”
Well thank God I’m not the only one bothered by that flowerish, rainbowish, brightish stuff…
I play as necro with staff and I don’t see myself farming stuff like crazy to use that rainbow thing. It just doesn’t fit the character.
Am I the only one bothered by the lack of legendaries?
I’m thinking of making a new char and about some possible class/build combinations…
I’d like to have a raw damage type tanky char like in some games when you have an orc that you turn berserkser on beat the sh.. out of people but can also take damage np. (just an example).
Maybe a Pow/Vit/Tough based build. Is this possible/viable in any class?
Ty
Up
Can I do this? =p
Aahhh I didn’t know WvW bonuses afected out of there.
Thank you.
I currently play Necro and I noticed in a couple weeks my Health changed from 20,422 to 18,739 to 18,372 with the same equipment. No boons, just walking in town.
wtf !?
Sounds like you just need active people to talk to and play with. I would suggest joining a very active guild.
A bunch of friends and I just run fractals and dungeons to have fun, to each their own though.
True. Running by myself is the worst part.
Hey guys, I’ve reached level 80 a while ago and I’m kinda borded with the game. I farmed a cool looking amor with the best possible stats, I just don’t have Ascended Jewelry/Weapons.
The thing is, I haven’t made any friends that I can play with and at the time I log there are not many people online.
That said… what are the things that you guys like the most? Like 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.
I have done some dungeons, I go WvW from time to time, I run low level champs, but its really not very exciting.
Thanks for any tips.
Cya!
No. Arena Net has stated in the past that they want things to flip frequently and that defending shouldn’t be incentivized because it’s not as fun. For the past months they have worked hard to increase the speed at which you can flip an entire map while tools for defending have been left in the dirt. It’s all according to plan.
Well thats too bad. I don’t know if other players like it, but I don’t.
You go WvW, spend couple hours fliping the map red then 10 mins later… all green.
Maybe because there’s so few people at the WvW map, with more then one zerg of the same world things could be more interesting.
Any guild from EB?
I ’dont want to change world.
Hey guys, i’ve been playing GW2 for a couple months and I could find a guild that suits what I look for. I don’t really have any ingame friends and its hard to find someone to play with.
I’m not really into TS and stuff like that but I can use if really needed. I just want a guild where I come online and there’s people to talk to, invite for stuff, PvE, WvW, whatever… actually the talking is the part I’m looking for, making friends, playing together.
I’m not looking for a big big guild though. I like to remember who is who.
About me:
Necromancer atm
I’m from Brasil (huehuehuehuehue brbr xD)
I usually play at night (GMT+3)
That’s it, Im quite new at GW2 and I have a lot to learn, nothing better than new friends to teach me.
Cya!
Yeah, I guess you are right.
I like the massive content, where you have to gather many people, coordinate actions and so on.
I actually go to WvW more for the tokens then the fight itself. Nice discount for the Ascended jewelry.
I’ve been playing WvW for a while and one thing that bothers me a little bit is how things change fast in the map. I mean, a red “zerg” runs getting keeps and towers while blue “zerg” is in another area getting other things… ok.
I feel there is no greater achievement. So i’ve been thinking, is a castle siege system viable?
Something like this:
The main keep could be kept for lets say a week for a server. And once a week this keep would be open for attack by the other servers for a certain period of time (if any1 played lineage 2 will know how it works), like a couple hours.
That way the defending server would have to defend the main keep while it is attackable but also worry about the other areas for resources that would help defend the keep. The “enemies” would have to figure a way to invade the main keep, lowering the resources, direct attack, etc…
At the end the server that won could stay with that keep for a week, having a source of resources, teleport, defense…
I don’t know if this is viable or if its just a stupid idea. What do you guys think?
WvW is very cool and adictive, but the mid-long term sense of achievement is not very good IMHO.
I tried d/p and s/p a little bit but its really not that better from what I was doing with d/d.
In fact I killed faster with d/d.
Ofc when there are multiple mobs things get a little bit harder, but like synk said you can always swap to the sb and sue that multiple target arrows and AoE.
I also noticed something stupid I was doing. I was trying to kill mobs 3+ lvls than me in zones more advanced than I should. So, I’ll try stick with d/d and see what I can do. As I lvl up I’ll also have more skills to work with, so maybe its just a matter of getting use to it.
Oh yeah, I forgot to say I’m using dagger/dagger atm.
I don’t intend to make PvP till I’m 80, so I guess I will try the sword or dagger/pistol set for leveling and maybe try d/d later.
What about the swap weapon? Any tips?
I watched some videos of d/d and i thought they would be good for PvE too. I guess I was wrong.
Thanks guys!
(edited by rsiloliveira.6429)
Hey guys.
After a long series of tests with almost every profession I finally decided to be a thief.
I’m still level 15 but I noticed that thief is a little bit harder to play with than the others I tested. With ranger and elem was just run around shooting at the enemies, with guardian and warrior was more like a face-to-face combat and so on…
I’m thinking of focusing my skills in stealth/critical/backstab so I’m trying to kill mobs using that. Anyway… I’m killing mobs like this and I want to check if is the “right” way, or if there’s a better way you could tell me:
1) Open the fight with the 3 skill 1 or 2 times just to stack a couple bleedings.
2) Run around the mob or foward and back trying to make it miss me, hitting with the 1 ofc.
3) 5… get inv… backstab till the hp is low
4) 2, 2, 2…
I try to use evade when they make aoe or stuff like that.
Is this the way to go up till 80?
Any tips are welcome.
Cya!
Hey guys. I’ve been playing for about a week now and to be honest I read and watch videos more than play.
Well, given the infinite amount of possibilities I have some features that I want in my char. Maybe you can help me choose a profession and a weapon that suits it.
1) I wanna be able to jump in the fight, mobs or people, I don’t want to have to run around like crazy trying to avoid the combat.
2) I want a good balance between DPS and Survivability, I mean, I don’t have to be the most offensive character in the party and I don’t want to be the 1 hit dead too. (Like the regular mage for example, in all MMOs).
3) I don’t want to have to change my build for PvP or PvE, if its possible I wanna handle myself ok in both, depending more of my abilities than the build itself.
Sorry if I’m asking too much, but just some directions would be reeeeally appreciated.
Cya!
Thanks guys, that was really helpful.
It seems I’m doing the right thing then. I’ll just stick to the main story and clear the maps while I’m on it, try to level up the crafting too but since I can’t get all the mats I will level up what I can and when I’m 80 I make a run for craft.
The thing about guilds is exactly what you said, I wanna join one that is welcoming to the newbies because I don’t know all the terms, the places, etc…
Thanks again!
Hey guys, I started playing about a week ago and so far I’m having lots of fun. But I’m kinda lost, so if you can help me with some random questions that would be nice.
Yeah, I read wiki, google, but I need opinions from people that already play.
1) What’s the importance of the WvW while you still not level 80? I mean, I’m thinking of leveling first than start PvPing.
2) I see you can get gear from several ways. Can I level up all the way to 80 without having to spend my gold? Just getting rewards?
3) Guilds, should I join one now or wait? I’m still learning a lot of stuff, I don’t wanna be useless.
4) Should I buy materials for leveling up my crafting or I can get everything while I run around the map?
5) Are there party exclusive dungeons? Like in WoW for example, they are a good way to level up and get good equipment.
6) Is there any must-do thing while leveling? For now I’m just following the main quest and clearing the areas.
Well, I guess that’s it for now.
