Tybalt and Trahearne are my favorite storyline characters for their story. My favorite characters to look at are Eir Stegalkin, Faolain, and Ysvelta.

This isn’t a which class is better thread. I just want to hear people’s opinions on what would be nice to play with this scenario.
I’d like to choose a supporty class to play with my friend. He is a Ranger. It can’t be Elementalist because I already have one at level 80. I don’t want it to be a Ranger because he’s already one.
What would you pick?

this is strictly PvP/WvW small groups
I made an amazing balanced build that is great in groups or even 1vX because of its natural tankiness….yes, that’s right, tank elementalist.

celestial amulet and rune of divinity make for some major balancing your stats, which elementalist benefits more from than any other class.
armor of earth and mist form is nice for stomping foes.
glyph of storms should always be used in earth, it blinds everyone every second it’s down making people miss more than half their attacks if they’re in it and does high damage, too.
glyph of elementals should be in ice or air for healing or stuns.

I want to use it because Abyss is such a rich black dye that keeps the detail of armor designs.
I think you would be better served with Black then, since Abyss loses a lot of the natural highlights the ambient light produces on any part of an armour.
If you wish to use it for bragging rights, then seriously reconsider what other colours you wish to use. You need some very dark tones to complement it, and IMO it is of itself not complementary to your Sylvari (except perhaps her hair colour).
it’s very complimentary to the colors she chose and she made it look like black trim which is very nice for the colors she has on there.
if you want to look at colors “scientifically” then she (he?) did a great job

the dye and armor previews need to be much easier to use and better, most of the times I hear people talking about wondering what something would look like you hear them slip in the comment “if only the preview system was easier” which is a bad sign.
the dye previews needs to be just like the actual dye system. and the preview armor needs to be incorporated so you can see the final result when buying armor/dyes so you aren’t left to gamble and hope it turns out the way you plan.

I completely changed my sylvari’s hair and skin color.

Have you seen this thread on colour schemes?
There is some great advice there on choosing dyes
yay! you referred to my guide
Your new look looks really good, OP! I personally think your new use of abyss looks nice.
since you want to maybe change the armor look and not just the colors you might want to use this to help you find the fix to your petticoat problem. you can kinda see where the colors go with most of these previews, too.

You need a Total Makeover Kit. Bought from the Gem Store, or rarely gotten from Black Lion Chests. You also get a free one for the 5000 and 10000 point achievement rewards, I believe.
thanks, I just went ahead and bought a total makeover kit. Meet my new Sylvari!

spoilers
I’m male sylvari doing volcanic extraction quest (level 64 i think) and at the end when we chat about syska being a traitor one of the last things my character says doesn’t word wrap and you cant read the last 5 words or so because it just keeps going off screen.

How about air 3 and earth 5 as skillshots instead of targeted?
I didn’t think about that for air’s knockback, but i did suggest that with earth’s shockwave.
I only talked about things I actively notice while playing. I see nothing wrong with water’s auto attack…or anything wrong with fire to be honest.
Color schemes to help you stand out!
the problems I see and how I would change them.
I feel staffs are meant to be more support than other elementalist weapons with more combo fields with some steady DPS at range
water:
frozen ground cd too long. (maybe make it 30s cd for 4 seconds)
geyser needs a 2 second increase but heal the some amount just a bit less per second, this would help with combo finishers and positioning problems.
air:
lightning surge cast time too long.
gust only hits one target which is bad in 99% of pve situations since you need mobs grouped up for aoe.
as for the air auto attack, chain lightning, i think it should do 100% bonus damage if it only hits a single target, that would make it as if there were 2 targets and it bounces between them except the 2nd target isn’t there.
earth:
eruption takes so long you have to cast it before combo fields if at all.
shockwave needs more than one stack of bleeding and needs to be able to be cast like whirlwind without the movement, which isn’t foreign to elementalists because of firey greatsword so I think we would love it (maybe 3 stacks of bleeding for 10 seconds)
the “stoning” auto attack needs bleeding. (1 stack for 3 seconds)
the biggest problem is earth’s unsteady ground. It’s a new concept for elementalists so i can only assume it’s not finished being changed.
unsteady ground can be used in conjunction with static field for some serious mob control but it’s too short by itself, i think it should be increase by 1 second because if you are trying to escape and you are currently out of combat then you can cast unsteady ground and not get the combat movement speed decrease, but if you combine it with static field then you are slowed. it should also knock back if you cast it under an enemy so it puts them behind the wall instead of being able to freely go through it.

elementalists are the jack of all trades, I feel being good in all of them.
with scepter/dagger at medium range to kill everything super quickly with large AoE burst, conditions, and easy to use finishers for boons (blast finishers in fire field)
with a staff I can go long range with more of a AoE support/control/steady dps AoE with a lot of various combo fields. (needs blasting staff trait, 20 arcana for larger radius)
with dagger/dagger at short range I have powerful auto attacks with decent burst abilities with good utility. (good idea to get powerful aura for AoE auras to party members)
with dagger/focus at short range I can focus more on powerful auto attacks with amazing utility and defence from focus.
with scepter/focus you can get good damage with a bit of defence/utility as well.
the most popular i would say is scepter/dagger and staff…
remember you cant switch weapons with elementalists, only switch elements. (which counts as weapon switch if you have a sigil that procs on weapon switch)

I do agree that a better colour-tester would be nice, but I know from practice that using wikis and so on does get you off to a good start – just try them on via the AH after that, and maybe 60-70% of them will in fact look how you anticipated, and you can buy those.
@Serisho – this is a great thread, thank you for making it!
Idk if you know this, but you can right click on dyes in the Trading Post and click preview. it’s not a very easy way to preview and i wish it ha a UI like real color dye.
for example, here is deep glacial sky…I can guarantee I don’t have this dye nor will I ever have it. (it is 130g!)

The only “real” always ranged class I think would be staff elementalist…. not only do you have huge AoE, but you can heal a large amount of people, too. If you ever want to go into the frey you can go dagger/dagger or scepter/dagger and do just fine, but remember you cant weapon swap, only element swap.
the other option would be longbow and axe/warhorn ranger. longbow most of the time, but axe/warhorn are both medium ranged and are good at keeping away from the enemy.
the other ranged classes usually have a ranged weapon and a melee weapon for swap.
if you go staff elementalist you will need Blasting Staff trait for sure (Arcana VIII)
As for ranger, usually you would go longbow and then a melee weapon. Which is good for staying back out of the fray but if you need to get into the combat you can in times of duals.
I’m not too sure about the other ranged classes for WvW.

well both are great for PvE!
I have to start by saying I am biased towards the ranger, but my main is an Elementalist.
when i talk about, for example, sword/dagger I mean main hand/offhand. if i don’t put a slash ( / ) that means it is a two handed weapon.
with the ranger, you won’t always be using ranged attacks, so keep that in mind. when I play ranger I go longbow and sword/dagger. you can also use greatsword or axe/warhorn, all are popular choices. (rangers throw axes) Your best pet will be the bear types in PvE.
warriors are highest hp/defense combined and generally plow through PvE quicker than most classes. I found warriors to be lack luster for me. warriors also have longbow, but I prefer the rifle on warrior for my ranged weapon. for melee weapon I prefer sword/axe or greatsword. sometimes i’ll ditch the range weapon and use sword/axe and greatsword. the popular weapons differ for what style of warrior you’re going to play.
as for race, it’s mostly for your early game personal storyline (1-35ish levels) and looks.
Norn are in the snowy mountains (shiverpeak mountains) and are kinda like vikings. I dont know much about norn storylines.
humans are a dying race and are slowly being wiped out, now only their main city divinity’s reach in kryta remains.
I will note, however, that Norn have a fun PvE elite skill that you can transform into the Norn spirit animals (bear, wolf, snow leopard, raven)

Thank you so much for all the work gone into this! Also, for all the links and images.
no problem!
I finished the RGB, I’m sure I accidentally skipped a few, but I should have most of them down in order from highest hue to lowest hue
I’m not going to post it here because it’s really long, but you can get a gist of what it is from the post earlier
when I feel like it (after I’m not too drained from doing real homework) I’ll sort them out based on specifics…like the stuff i have for red will be changed to pink, red, orange and brown.
and blue will be Blue, Blue/green (for those few that are teal, or turquoise) and ill add the purples to the pink shades probably. maybe separate depending on how long/short/different they are.
I’ll also probably mix some stuff up as i go along. I gotta play it by ear.

Astral Projections posted this chart in another thread.
this is very nice to use, if you pick towards center of the circle a red color, then on the other side (if complimentary) you should pick towards the center, too
so far I’m just sorting out the red blue green (and Neutral, if they are all close together) once I’m done with that I’m going to organize it and then change the colors to be more specific like.
red will split into pink red orange yellow
green kinda just stays green.
blue will split into blue and purple.

I’ve actually used the page before but I’ve forgotten about it. It is the sort of UI I was thinking of but restricted to GW2 dyes.
If I knew the actual color IDs to the colors in game i could put together something. not a program but some sort of table to follow.

Name + color + RGB values + tweakable program example from the former API dev
awesome. I have no Idea what the coding means, but I can try to make a chart.
and in case you were wondering, these are the colors I’m using. I’m using purple and gold with a shade with black to make the contrast of the shading less dull (since shading means to add black/darkness. the colors are evening (purple) squash (gold) and charcoal (black)
http://i.imgur.com/cgIuqAL.jpg
if you use colors that add tint (white) then you could use tinted complimentary colors + white to balance it.
which would look like this.

and here is the complimentary colors without tints or shades and without the neutral.

I am surprised this hasn’t been done yet but this seems like the ideal target for an app which can pull all the possible colors from the color API. The user selects the primary color they want and the app can give all the different colors for each of the schemes. Cost can be obtained from several different places too.
found one. http://colorschemedesigner.com/

most of the free dyes are my favorite, like my favorite red is autumn, my favorite green is limette and my favorite orange is apricot. Glory is also very close to grape gum, which grape gum is my favorite purple.
Royal Blue is by far my favorite blue, though. if you can only get one 50s+ dye I would suggest this. there isn’t really any alternatives besides afternoon dye, which is very different if side by side.
Color schemes to help you stand out!
Most of the dyes i posted were in the 1-15s range. only 2 are any higher, but they’re at 70s and that is royal blue and charcoal. and you can use afternoon instead of royal blue at 13s.
I guess ebony (free) is ok instead of charcoal, black is just a super popular dye, but I dont use black or white in any of the combinations i showed here, i just thought i’d put cheaper alternatives to be helpful.
I’ll add prices

That would be nice. but it only takes a few seconds and a minute amount of understand to do it yourself :p . sadly I know absolutely nothing about programming.
Color schemes to help you stand out!
it stands for Random Number Generator. since there is no true random in programming, you have to make it as close as possible. that is called pseudo-random.
my guess is…let’s say a monster can drop 100 different items. The RNG would have those items on numbers 1-100, meaning every item has a number. let’s say “ring of power” is number 55. If (when you kill the monster) the RNG gives you #55 you will get a ring of power. that is why sometimes the RNG can be a nuisance or a blessing.
RNG was a blessing for me today because I got an Abyss dye out of 3 unidentified dye.
I use the term blessing loosely, I am not religious. people like to refer RNG as a god, though.

I know most of you wont be using vibrant colors. The most important thing to remember is to make the colors less vibrant and more like leather or metal, you should add a tint, shade, or tone to your colors picked. which you can find from this link http://www.tigercolor.com/color-lab/color-theory/color-theory-intro.htm
the coloration will be the same concept, just different shades of the color used. which would require searching in finding the better dye for you which can be done here http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Dye
Color schemes to help you stand out!
I haven’t seen very many characters that stand out, and that disappoints me. Yeah, the typical all white/black looks good, but it is exactly that, typical. To top it all off, typical dyes are expensive! With the right set of tools you can look as good as you want without spending a fortune on dyes.
I will be referring to this link anytime I talk about the color wheel, warm/cold colors, and color schemes.

This guide is just to help people get on track of making their favorite color scheme, by no means do you have to follow this guide. All I hope is that I can inspire the community to be colorful and unique!
______________________________________________________
First off you can go simple with complimentary color schemes. That being colors opposite of each other on the color wheel.
Pick your main color, the one you want people to notice first when looking at your character, and then pick the color opposite on the wheel. What happens is you have one warm and one cool color. Usually I prefer the warm one to be the main color.
here is an example of Apricot (orange) and Stream (light blue), orange being my main color. My goal here was to make most of the fabric orange and have a light blue trim.
http://i.imgur.com/5YaoAdK.jpg
side note: I considered swapping the colors on the gloves to follow my “rule” of light blue trim, but I liked it better the other way. You can play around with it and see which you like best.
Next we will play with analogous color schemes. As we get into using 3 colors we need to pick our first, second and third favorite colors. Analogous schemes use colors that are next to each other on the color wheel. With this you can go either warm colors or cool colors. Only very few analogous color schemes has both, which makes this one more tricky.
I’m going to use Royal Blue as my main color. the colors on either side are Blue Rose (light blue, 2nd) and Evening (purple, 3rd) I had to play a lot with this and swap the colors around to get what was most appealing.

here is a warm analogus color scheme using Autumn (red) Tangerine (orange) and Daffodil (yellow)

Next, we will work with triadic color schemes Pick your main color and your other 2 will be picked for you, but pick which of the 2 you like better for your second and third colors. This will give 2 warm and 1 cold, or 2 cold and 1 warm.
I am going to choose Autumn (red, 1st) and Daffodil (yellow, 2nd) and Stream (light blue, 3rd)

The split-complementary color scheme is your next best bet if you like the complimentary color scheme but cant seem to get it right, because it is difficult to mess up. In addition to the base color, it uses the two colors adjacent to its complement.
I am going to use the same Apricot (orange) as my complimentary color scheme, but my second and third colors will be Winter Sky (darker light blue) and Limette (green)

I won’t go into quadratic color schemes, as you should have the knowledge to try it out yourself, but I do want to share with you my Rainbow Scheme

It’s really annoying when in a zerg in PvE and causes some lag for me. I don’t need to see random names, but I want to be able to see guild and party member names. Is there any way to turn off random players name?

Thanks guys, but I found one that is really helpful. I already made a few friends!

I’ve only just bought the game and I’ve been working on getting several classes to level 10 to see which I like best. So far my mind isn’t made up on a main.
little bit about gaming
I hardly know anything about this game, but I learn fast and have a ton of mmo experience in PvE and PvP. I played Aion for a long time and many other action oriented games more similar to guild wars 2. Currently I only play this and SMITE. I have a microphone and prefer to use it.
little bit about me
I’m not really outgoing, but I am a positive person. I can get a little competitive sometimes but not over the top. I’m a freshman in college majoring in marine biology and minoring in chemistry. I like the term “casual” because I don’t play all the time, but when I do play I go hard.
It must be in Blackgate because I bought the digital deluxe edition so I don’t want to pay for server transfer nor do I want to delete all my characters.

Snagged this screenshot the other day. I’m using it as a desktop background now. Definitely worth the repair bill.
my new background image, too! wow.
I just started guild wars 2. I am hoping to get my friend to buy it, I know he would love this game (who wouldn’t). This is the picture I showed him of the great character creation of a human necromancer. I told him about the personality and story line traits you can choose which we think is an amazing idea.
P.S. I love PvP and he loves PvE, lore and story line. I’m hoping this game will get him into PvP since it has the best of both worlds.
