Is Anet afraid of expansion not selling?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Here’s something you have to remember, Anet didn’t release Factions until 2 years after Prophecies and it took them 1 year to release the Stone Summit patch. It wasn’t until after the success of the Stone Summit patch that hey decided to finish up Factions for release. When they announce Factions they also announced that they’d be doing a Standalone every 6 months for GW. We ended up getting Nightfall 6 months after Factions and EotN a year after. Then Anet announced GW2 and here we are.

Umm what?

Factions was released exactly one year after Prophecies. Guild Wars: Prophecies was released on April 28th, of 2005. While Guild Wars: Factions was released on April 28th, of 2006. The Stone Summit (or Sorrow’s Furnace) was released on September 7th, of 2005. Six months after Guild Wars’ initial release.

And Factions wasn’t even an expansion. It was an entirely new Campaign like Prophecies. Basically a whole new game. Released within a year.

And Guild Wars 2 had more content at launch than Factions and Prophecies put together.

Everyone knows the game launched too early. They spent the first year getting it to where it is now, which is playable. This project is so much bigger and more ambitious than Guild Wars 1, you might as well not try to compare.

50 devs vs 300. 25 missions in Prophecies and 13 missions in Factions compared to how many personal stories?

How many starting zones in the two games.

Hell people finished Factions in 1 week and complained there was nothing to do. One week!

Uhm, I actually finished the story-line in Factions in 12 hrs with my Prophecies Ranger. That didn’t mean I was left with nothing to do, I still had the Assassin and Ritualist professions to level and take to Prophecies. Not to mention 3 other 20s to bring over to Cantha. Oh, and then there was Anet moving all PvP except GvG to the Battle Isles not to mention capping all my Elites on each character. When you compare all that including the replayability of GW, GW had much more content than what GW2 has.

Now I’m not saying we need an expansion, what we need is an actual GW2 not WoW in Tyria.

Levels in MMOs are meaningless

This is a thread on MMORPG.com
http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/397542/page/1
Talking about how Leveling really arent that interesting of a goal, after so many MMOs have this same goal in their game.

When I first started playing MMOs, yeah I thought Levels were cool and needed. But that was before I open up to the reality after playing MMOs and leveling for a while.

I realized then, just how meaningless the levels really are. Its just a visual content lock. I join a game, “FORCED” to level, just to get access to the things I enjoy as being fun. The World is small as a low level. Gets bigger as a high level.

This takes away the fun and gates it behind a lock. the key to the lock is the dreaded “you must be level X to do Y”

MMOs are now full of meaningless Leveling.

Some MMOs add large grinds to the above scenario of “you must be level X to do Y”, and yet that still only makes the situation worst.

Some MMOs have shorter grinds of this. But its still a Useless grind. No matter how shorter or harder the grind of leveling in a MMO is, its still will be a meaningless grind.

In GW2 we have a down scale system. We have a up scale system for WvW.

Why not get rid of Levels all together so we have the freedom to just have fun and play what we like.

How long are levels really suppose to keep your players entertained?

I want all content, to be for all players. No leveling content, not stupid leveling hearts.
All Content for ALL PLAYERS!!

Leagues. Please don't do it.

Some of the Anet guys are straight from Blizzard so are veterans to the MMO genre so would assume they have some common sense with their ideas before following through on them in game, hah!

If you are talking about the founders of Anet. Only one is left Mike Obrian that was from Blizzard. The other founders left GW2 right around or soon after its release. They all left Blizzard before it made WoW anyway. They were with Blizzard back on Warcraft the RTS game days.

The Anet we have now… is NOT the Anet from GW1 days. The Anet we have now are from korean MMO cash shop hell mmos.

Please get your priorities straight Anet.
Stat increase = gear grind.
Gear grind = no money from me ever again.

Here’s the challenge:

On the livestream, I would really like one of the devs to go through the Troll’s End jumping puzzle in LA, preferably on a Norn, then look directly at the camera and tell us that they don’t think there’s anything wrong with the in-game camera.

I don’t believe it would be possible to do with a straight face.

Well, now ask yourself… why would Arena.net make that 180?

The answer (in my opinion), because the feedback they got (not just from the official forum) said this was the way they needed to go to retain their players. I’m sorry you don’t like that. I’m sorry that they felt the game to your desires wasn’t sustainable

Oh I agree with this 100%. Their whole mantra wasn’t working and people were leaving and leaving fast. So they did a 180. But here is my problem. A developer should make changes like that during beta. Not after live, when many people bought the game based on their original mantra.

Now what they have is a whole lot of their core fanbase angry at them. And I am sorry they have to deal with it, but it is the bed they made.

What utter nonsense. I have played plenty of MMOs before, and 2-3 weeks is a long time to get an item in any MMO.

It is amusing to me that people actually think they fulfilled the “Is it Fun” and the “Manifesto”, they did nothing of that sort, they did a total 180. I have to facepalm everytime someone tries to explain why they actually fulfilled their promises.

They are not building their game around “fun” anymore, they are building their game around what they said “subscription” games do. And that is grinds, time sinks, gated content and all of that type of content they criticized.

I’m not talking about any item, I talk about best in slot items and explained with an example how these are quite difficult to obtain. Ignoring this won’t get you anywhere. You can complete a raid in WoW only once a week, 2% chance per week means that you’d grind your time out of that raid for weeks/months to get the best in slot item. And then you’d have to do this for most slots.

People still clinging on the Manifesto because they want to prove that the game is bad just annoy me. The game is out for over a year and players have tons of feedback and behave in a certain way so that Anet has to react to that. The game is evolving according to that spoken/unspoken feedback in the best interest of the game, and ONLY Anet has the right to judge what this is. The only thing we can do to change this: give advice or behave differently ingame. When 90% of the players buy Black Lion chests once a month, then Anet gets a clear sign from us.

Just facepalm.

When you are comparing GW2 to WoW Heroic raiding, that itself should be a sign about how far this game has done a 180.

No one is using the Manifesto to say the game is bad. People use the Manifesto and articles like “Is it Fun” to show how far from their original design the team has come. They completely abandoned their original goals and went with the same old MMO formula. The point was for GW2 to be different in terms of core game design, not minor differences here and there which all MMOs have.

When GW2 tried to be like every other MMO, it also started competing with every other MMO. It is not good for the game or its future.

Companies do have the right to judge where they take their game, but companies can also be very wrong when they do.

You had to know the "everything you love about guild wars 1 " line was campaign promise . I mean who honestly expected that to be true ? I doubt anyone , its just used as an excuse .

I believed it 100%, you know why, because ANet was a respectable gaming company during GW1 and we had their backs as loyal customers. There is a reason GW2 was so hyped, they had that backing and confidence in them and no one doubted that the legendary arena net was going to make an epic guild wars sequel.

That is until they betrayed pretty much every GW1 vet and ignore every one of their plea’s. Like above poster said, they wish we would just roll over and die and stop complaining because it’s all about money now not the players. Oh and not only did they betray us, but everyone else when they said NO GRIND (lol) and all this crap but everything changes when you get money in hand apparently.

$$$ is evil, but I’d much prefer to spend more if they would listen to their players.

Sequels are always bad

Kudos for that. A lot of games with sequels stray from the original game and make it rather boring.

Seriously why don’t devs get this? Are sequels that stray too much from the original EVER successful? Does it EVER not kitten off the fan base?

Back to WoW, make GW2 fun please.

At 40 they will add a different color dot for just party members in the mini map.
At 70 you can kick members who are offline from the group.

Wow, I read what Colin said. And it is AMAZING to me how they completely made a 180 from that. This was the funniest. He is doing the OPPOSITE of what he said.

You get leveling systems that take insane amounts of grind to gain a level, loot drop systems that require doing a dungeon with a tiny chance the item you want can drop at the end, raid systems that need huge numbers of people online simultaneously to organize and play, thousands of wash/repeat item-collection or kill-mob quests or dailies with flavor text support, the best stat gear requiring crazy amounts of time to earn, etc.

So I've used 2 aether keys.

people do this in mmo’s?

Listen, while I agree that’s part if it most people and myself included go in it for the loots. When there isn’t any loots other than dungeon tokens, why bother doing it if its tedious and long and has the same reward as easier and shorter paths (aka tokens).

This is a really good game but when it comes to rewarding players with loot ANET doesn’t have a clue what to do.

If you’re gonna put out content that is challenging, then you better reward people for doing it (other than just a silly back item), or most people are only going to do it once or twice and then never do it again.

Why do you think diablo 3 failed as hard as it did? (there are many reasons) but the biggest one is because it was challenging and yet it didn’t reward its players. Nobody want’s to do challenging content for little or no epic loots. That’s what these games are all about, so when you add hard content to the game but drop the ball on the loots, nobody is gonna freaking do the content because its not worth it. These are the fundamental facts of any RPG/MMO.

This is sadly what happens when you have too much vertical progression. You cannot merge the concept of an open and living world with a rigid progression system which effectively locks some players out from participating. It’s a design error which will most likely never be fixed since the basic design of the game is conflicted.

It’s just more broken in GW2 than in other MMOs.

It’s all domination maps, you either zerg a base, or skip all the fights and backcap. Since there’s no healer, almost every fight can be won with either burst or outlasting until your teammates come. The cc in the game is evil, you only have stability that can be stripped, and no DR on continuous ccing.

Its easy, they want you tu buy gems for transfers.

They announce the leagues.
Guilds transfer to a server were to fight for the win with the lower queues possibles.
After they announce free/cheaper transfers
Bandwagoners move to kitten servers so they can have a chance of a good reward.
Servers get full
Guilds are forced to transfer again due to high queues.

Result= Anet gets loads of money due to gem purchases.

Piken has now become a High pop server, all this in a matter of hours!?
As usual with Anet decisions this is a total mess. How hard wopuld it be to judge a server WvW attendance by going over the last say 2-3 weeks and using the average per an hour as an inidication ant then use that as a basis for Server costs.

The insane population servers should be LOCKED for transfers. It should be FREE all the time to go to Low population servers and then base the rest of the servers on the population per hour?

Joining another server as a mercenary.

Crazy Idea/

New option when entering WvW: Join another server as a Mercenary.

What it would do: Instantly sends you to join a random Outmanned map on a server that is not in your current match-up, with limitations. You would not count against their outmanned limit, but you would count towards the mercenary cap. You would appear as “THEIR_SERVER_NAME Mercenary.”

Why it should be added:
1. It gives people a “hot-join” option to find a WvW fight, even when they can’t find it on their own server.
2. It gives people something to do when they can’t get on their own maps… or there is no one to fight on their own maps… or there is no one to fight with on their own maps.
3. It allows people to experience what WvW is like in other tiers.
4. It brings a small measure of balance to unbalanced fights by putting some extra people on unbalanced maps. Instead of just 8 people on the whole map, it might be 18 or 23, hopefully enough to get something done.

How it would be limited:
1. Number of mercs would be limited per map.
2. If the map fills to capacity, mercenaries will start being kicked out.
3. You would not be able to map-travel to other maps other than the one you joined on.
4. A time limit.
5. The option to join another server would have the same cooldown as the time limit. This would prevent people from hitting the join button over and over to try and get on a specific server. It would encourage people to play on whichever server they are randomly assigned to.
6. Prohibited from placing siege, buying upgrades while being a Mercenary.
7. You would not be able to be assigned to another server in your match-up.
8. Mercenary Commanders would have a different tag to differentiate them from regular commanders.

Why would people want to do this?
1. Have fun and gain wxp even when your server is in a horrible match-up.
2. Help the underdogs.
3. Outmanned Buff.
4. Easy way to find active people to fight and find people to fight with.
5. Meet new people and kill them.
6. The best part: A brand new Queue that you can Queue in!

I’ll try to post it again and if this lead (again) to the thread cancellation: my apologies.

From Eurogamer Expo 2013
Q: How close are you to the manifesto you posted before the game’s release?
A: Still hold core values but had to make some adjustments during development. Sometimes we have to stray away from what we have said in the past.

Let’s see what was declared with the manifesto:

Points they are still close to:

  • The look of Guild Wars 2 is stylized. We’re going for a painterly, illustrated aesthetic.
  • Cause and effect: A single decision made by a player cascades out in a chain of events.

Points from which they have decided to stray away:
- Guild Wars 2 takes everything you love about Guild Wars 1 and puts it into a persistent world.

  • B2P sustaining itself mainly through the release of new campaigns. No.
  • GvG? No.
  • Guild halls. No.
  • Guild capes. No.
  • UW? FoW? Alliance battle? No.
  • Focus on Horizontal progression? No.
  • Secondary profession? No.
  • Region free servers? No.
  • Alliance system? No.
  • Skills capturing? No.
  • Heroes? No.
  • Low and persisting level cap? No.
  • Hard Mode? No.
  • Costumes? No.
  • Dances differentiated by profession and gender. No.
  • Lore. Are you serious?
  • Etc etc. No. xD

- A game that defies existing conventions: (old school Mmorpg vs. Guild Wars 2)

  • Vertical Progression. -> Vertical Progression (but slower)
  • Farming. -> Farming.
  • Quest system. -> Renamed: Hearts, Dailies, Living Story.
  • Raid. -> (World Bosses?) ~ Work in progress ~
  • Trinity. DPS/Tank/Healer -> Redefined: Warrior-Guardian-Mesmer

- We just don’t want players to grind in Guild Wars 2. No one enjoys that. No one finds it fun. We want to change the way that people view combat.

  • Open PvE: Join the zerg spam 1, dodge if required (if not, you will roam alone in an almost dead world)
  • Interact with “put some random object name” in the world for hundreds of times.
  • Kill “put some random mob name” in the world for hundreds of times.

- As a structure, the MMO has lost the ability to make the player feel like a hero. Everybody around you is doing the same thing you are doing.

  • Run in circle (Frostgorge/Queensdale/…) to kill Champions doing the same things others are doing and in the same order at the same time.
  • You make all the hard work during the personal story, a salad take the credits.

- We respect you—as a player, as a human being.

  • So they decided to totally ignore our feedback on forum and close every thread that disagree with their decisions, without giving us any response.
“Otherwise, your MMO becomes all about grinding to get the best gear. We don’t make grindy games.”
- Mike Obrien
