I’m trying to get the Eternal Battlegrounds Lowlands (SW) Keep vista point. Near the top, there are a set of radial spokes to jump and stand on. However, I’ve tried it 5 times and always fell short of the first jump. I looked up a youtube video of it. In the video, the character backs up and does a running jump. Does that actually work? How do you do that?
All jumps can be done without using skills and without using speedboosts. But they are made to be challenging. A few advices:
a: if using a char, do not look at the front paws. (due to the size and animation of jumps they are the most horrible to jumpwith.
b: it’s never W+space at the same time, you press w and 0.01 seconds later you press space. This is so in all games.
c: understand the visable edge and the invisable edge. In some cases there is a big difference, special on bigger sized character. So to get the char example again, it may look that a char only have the back-paws back nail on the ledge and you are still standing. Experiment with this in towns with low fences.
d: practise makes perfect. If you are wating for a friend to do something in the game, do not stand still but go practising, jump on top of fences, find the boundery’s and challenge yourself to get to places you didn’t know you could get to.
a) if you are using a charr, swing your weapon to have your weapon drawn. that removes the front paw aiming issue.
b) not sure what you are getting at here but assuming you mean “don’t press W and space at the same time” this is very much correct. I just tested this on the ramp near the WvW portals as a ruler. W+space is approximately half the jump distance of W→space.
…
d) this probably can’t be stressed enough, the first time I did the Eternal Battlegrounds puzzle I was swearing how I would never do that EVER again. A couple of weeks later I was doing that daily on multiple characters. :P
e) when jumping on to narrow platforms use diagonal jumps so you have more landing space to help avoid over shooting.
Amazingly awesome answers! I’m +1ing all of you! Thanks, I’m going to go out and grind out a bunch of practice (and die a lot — repairs are cheap right?
tyvm! Further tips welcome of course but this is great for less than a day with a question up!

Also, this may be obvious, but don’t just tap W. Hold it down. GW2 jumping gives you midair steering and movement (so funky!) which means that if you let go of your forward motion, you plummet straight down. This is good for jumping onto narrow pillars, as you can let go when over them rather than trying to figure your jump speed from the start.
I mouse move, so I’m holding down both buttons to go forward as I tap the space bar; this lets me steer if I need to shift my angle a little or jump around a corner. Killed me in Clock Tower, though, I kept running out of mouse pad due to all the motion being to the right …
Well my advice is:
- Create an asura with speed passive signets. If you create a character that have the smallest character center to toes distance, when the toes are at the edge of the place you want to jump, the character (center) it is nearest to the edge! It’s a matter of perception. The signet gives you a permanent increase in speed of 25%. Having a swiftness buff grants you a max of +33% speed.
- Don’t make it worse! Usually when we start failing, the blood starts boiling. Here we make a lot more mistakes than we usually do. Take a break from that, and come back when you have cooled off.
- Mesmers don’t have a speed signet, but they have a portal that is very good newbie support xD, it is like a second chance to repeat the same thing (unless you die from the fall). Offhand focus speed buff can mitigate the lack of speed for this purpose!
- As Danikat said : Trial and Error! Do it, until you find your edge! Practice a lot!
/cheers
Some characters do seem to be harder. Charr and Norn have a reputation for trouble in jumping puzzles. The Charr because of the way they stand and the Norn because of the way they “clip” on their surroundings for example. I have one of each race, and I have found the Asura to be significantly easier. Their small size and faster movement animations make jumping a breeze in places where my Norn is tearing her hair out.
Just don’t do JP’s with Charr as a general rule…if you’re having trouble use an Asura. Seriously, Charr can float in midair off the edges of platforms, their jumping is like impossible to do well.
I know sometimes it’s finding just the right place to jump. For example when doing a jp in malchor’s leap the other day there was one jump I was having a terrible time with until I realized I had to jump from the highest point and not the farthest. As soon as I did, I never missed that jump again.
A lot of the far jumps require a running start, where you hit W first and then space to jump, and you have to jump right at the last moment. Others, especially when involving high jumps or jumps onto things like mushrooms where there’s a bit of an over hang, you have to jump first and then press W.
Mostly it’s just practice. Best of luck.
Well, most the other people have made good comments so I won’t cover general tips.
I noticed with the SAB, that you can actually jump slightly later than you think you would out in tyria.

Arise, opressed of Tyria!
It really depends on the jump. Like other people have said some of them you need to do in just the right place, or at just the right angle. Others you might need to push one button just before the other.
It’s often a matter of trial and error. Although as you get more practice you’ll find it easier to gauge a jump before you try.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
Having a speed boost(from a signet/Swiftness/other) will increase your jump distance. This means that for the same distance you’ll have more height. All jumps should be doable without any speed boost but it means having to do the jumps at the last moment. Having a speed boost will give you a bit more wiggle room.
Note that you actually get slightly more height during a vertical jump than a running one. For some jumps, you actually need to stand still, jump straight up, and then tap W to move forward onto the next platform.
The platforms themselves can also be slightly higher/lower in certain spots. Some experimentation may be needed to determine what’s the best point to jump onto a platform.
Sometimes it helps to use your profession’s weapon based leap skill. For me, coming from Guild Wars 1 with no jumping, it’s been a learn 2 leap thing. Leaps that I couldn’t do at all when I first started are easy now. Sometimes I hit w-space and sometime space-w. Sometimes there needs to be a slight pause between the w key and the space key, and sometimes they need to be hit at the same time.
