Stealth and (lack of) counterplay

in PvP

Posted by: Cero.5132

Cero.5132

oh-oh-oh I got an idea!
Besides 500 teleports and blindfield on demand thiefs need stealth to SURVIVE, is what everyone is saying?
And people are mostly frustrated by instagib from stealth with no counterplay amiright? How about just eeeeevery attack that could damage an enemy reveals, even if it does not hit(so no ports and so on, because we aaaall know thief needs that survivability o so much)
And thus we got the solution of less instagib, with thief still having his “survivabiliteeeh”.

And no, I´m not being serious.
I´m just starting to get kittened of that there is zero counterplay to stealthburst, no viable suggestions to fix it without killing thief off and diehard fanboys defending the current state of stealth.
Yet it´s the very same stealth fanboys who are crying about too much random aoe, when it´s the only thing currently working against stealth. What. The. Hell?

Everyone wants something for nothing.

All I see are people complainig about not getting gems or chracter slits for buying the expansion. You already do not have to pay a subscription fee. I have never seen a community of players whine about not getting free stuff added to a game so much. Maybe it is the non subscription that has created this mentality but arenanet does not owe you guys anything but a game that you have bought to play. Thats it period.

2 players grouped up =/= ‘A Premade’. That’s just completely silly. 5 people running complimenting, synergetic builds, who cover each others’ weaknesses through weaponsets, gear choices, utility selections and trait layouts, in order to accomplish maximum efficiency/synergy/output, while covering each others shortcomings…THAT is the very definition of a ‘PREMADE’. This word (premade), not only demands that, by definition of the word, but has NO RELEVANCE without meeting that criteria. A couple of buddies queueing together does not constitute ‘a premade’.

Even a 2-man team is a huge unfair advantage. If you’re teaming up, it’s serious enough to join the ranked q. Unranked should only be for soloers playing by themselves.

Orrr, orrrr, they could be practicing together, before hitting ranked! Orrrr, orrrr, they could be friends, and 1 is teaching the other how to play! Orrr, orrrrr, this game encourages a social experience in a team fight! So what you’re telling me is that 2 friends can’t get together and have fun in unranked matches because it’s a burden to the solo player? Get outta here. I’m social, I’m here for fun, and to enjoy it with my friends who may feel uncomfortable doing ranked matches. To say that 2 people shouldn’t even be allowed is a biased standpoint from a solo player.

That’s exactly what I’m saying. “Practicing together” is a pretty serious time commitment and if that’s what you’re doing, you shouldn’t be in unranked. Remember that it’s not just about skill – merely having two people working together is a tremendous advantage. The whole is more than the sum of its parts, as my previous link about 2-man teams showed.

Yes, friends shouldn’t be able to “get together” and “have fun” in unranked. Because guess what? It’s not “fun” for the rest of us. Pre arranged coordination is something that people can choose to do only in ranked arenas thank you very much.

Two different types of competitive gamers

in PvP

Posted by: Trevor Boyer.6524

Trevor Boyer.6524

Ok look, there are two different types of gamers in our modern era and they really can be divided in to these two groups:

  1. ~ People who like to play with extreme focus on TS3. Quite often these are the early 20 year old or younger gamers who grew up with headsets on XBOX and are accustomed to this type of grouping and have absolutely no problem devoting 110% focus to whatever guild activity is happening at the time. They are comfortable and adept with this type of communication in a game. In fact, they see games without voice chat as cave-man era, unreasonable and boring.
  1. ~ Gamers who are 30+ that grew up with the original NES and when they were around 12-13 years old, Diablo 1, Everquest and Ultima Online were kicking kitten “all text based communication”. They grew up with a certain atmosphere of ambiguity while playing the original MMORPGs “people not knowing who they really were” and most of these older gamers like to maintain that. Believe me when I say, I have had to drag people kicking & screaming just to have them give voice chat a chance.

The point being is that Arena-Net has created an environment that is uncomfortable in SPvP for the 30+ gamers who do not care for voice chat communication. It drives this type of gamer away from the game and only further dimishes the PvP community. This is mostly due to merging solo and team ques. It is a gross error for a few reasons:

  • Primarily – SPvP in GW2 with the merging of solo & team ques now requires that you play with a good & strong 5 man premade “that is using voice chat” or you ultimately will not succeed. Any of you who argue this have clearly not played against higher MMRs. So what are we looking at? It’s a game that requires a sense of politics, social function, charisma and tolerance of your team mates to succeed “which is great! I love it actually!” but there is no longer a place for the guy with great combat reflexes who just wants to listen to mp3s while he PvPs. If there were a place, we’d have a lot more players
  • Many 30+ hardcore gamers “including the large majority of the original Guild Wars 1 PvP fan base” do not want to play a game that requires voice chat to get serious and they will find other games that do not require voice to be able to hang in the high teirs. Having “Random Arena” and “Team Arena” was the correct approach in Guild Wars 1. I’m sure all of you Devs absolutely hate hearing the Guild Wars 1 references but this is a serious point that you need to pay attention to. You are missing out on a large fan-base of old gamers who wanted to love Guild Wars 2 until they found out there was no longer a place for them in the new competitive scene vs. 5 man premades on TS3.
  • The active voice chat players ~ Some of us are on voice chat every single night leading teams and cooperating but let me tell ya, it’s stressing and difficult to deal with each and every night. I mean seriously, sometimes you just want to set yourself to offline and watch a movie in the background while NOT having to talk to other people on a voice chat but this is impractical and unreasonable with the current merge of solo & team + the funked up MMR algorithm. So what are we looking at again? A game that demands 5 man premade voice chat play if you want reasonable and practical match results. This does indeed push players away from the game. I see more players in Guild Wars 2 tell me “I need a break” and then never come back, than any other MMORPG I have ever seen and it is due to above reasons that I have listed. You should take this seriously coming from someone who has played all of the major MMORPGs of our time.

The game needs a casual competitive scene again

Suggestions:

  • Bring back solo que
  • Add 1v1 arenas with rankings “not hard to do”
  • Add strange competitive PvE challenges with rankings “like old GW1 mission scores”
  • In general ~ make more game modes that do not reward multi man communication through voice chats. Everyone loves team play! but not everyone wants to be on a voice chat.

Remember that there are many people who play only for the purpose of being competitive, no matter what game mode it is but not all of them want to use voice chat. By making ALL of your game modes reward voice chat, you are losing the interest of these competitive players simply because they cannot be competitive without it. Guild Wars 2 is becoming widely recognized as a voice chat MMORPG. This reputation in itself drives away older gamers who do not care for voice chats.

And for crying out loud, give us some competitive game modes that don’t require the TS politics. Boy oh boy would that be great. #1 suggestion for this game in my opinion.

I use the name Barbie on all of my characters.

sorry, but if you have a problem with AI builds then you’d have absolutely HATED some GW1 builds, minion masters (atleast until the very late patches) had no limit to the amount of minions they could summon, all they required was a corpse,

in pve this meant that as a MM you only needed your group to get the ball rolling, after that you could pretty much solo the rest of the map :P

plus IMHO spirit ritualists were 10x worse than turret engis,
perma blind mixed with damage that can 2 shot you?

that all being said, i do agree that GW1 pvp generally felt alot better balanced,
if a particular build was annoying you, lets say those vermin Backfire/Empathy mesmers! you could create a build to counter it, maybe a ranger with attack speed increase and Broad Head Arrow (one of my favourite skills in the game)

plus the maps…they were all great and basic, no kitten SKYHAMMER

Dude, the forum is about PvP, OP is discussing PvP player…and you come here and talk about GW1 PvE to justify…….what really? To make what point?

The point on your reply which makes a lot of sense is the part in which you talk about builds and counters.
GW1 was all about your own skill, and your build and counters. There was always a counter to every skill (except maybe Rit Weapons…).
GW2 doesn’t have counters, or enough counters to really make a difference in gameplay.

@OP:
you’re right. How is it that the same company that made such an outstanding PvP game managed to do such an awful PvP on GW2 is beyond me…

All the other skills can be dodged, this is not a good argument to defend moa. What if we give a 100k dmg ranged skill for one class with 1seconds cast time. Would you consider it balance too because you can dodge?

The cd is also not a good excuse. Supply crate, lich form, fgs, spirit of nature, tomes, etc.. and arent a press to win 1v1 skills.

All the other skills that can be blocked, dodged, reflected, blinded, still allow you do counter play after even if that lands. If it is direct dmg you can heal, if it is condi you can clear, after moa is landed you have almost 0 counter play. The only thing similar to moa in this game is Ice Bow #5 but you take 50% more time to cast, it roots you on cast, has a much more visible animation and last less time.

Probably longer, seeing as it isn’t broken, there’s just a high quantity of fools that think it is.

Yknow what I did when pets started dealing twice as much damage as normal? I reported it. I didn’t come on the forums claiming it had always been like that. Grow up.

And neither did I. I hopped ingame and tested out the iWarlock thoroughly. It has precisely the same damage coefficient and scaling as pre-patch. People are just having fits because of the strength runes and battle sigil combo boosting damage.

Good testing bro.

Lemme see if I’ve got this for the current pseudo meta:

Ele: Potato
Engy: OP
Guard: Potato
Mesmer: Toxic?
Necro: OP
Ranger: Potato
Thief: Toxic
Warrior: OP?

Potatos are either close to balance or unknown, I guess? I mean, eles aren’t really OP or Toxic, just kinda midline it seems. Guards have one or two tricks, but are still fairly simple like warriors, just without the same abilities.

Warrior has no mechanic to be toxic with, it’s just hit you in the face style stuff, Engy and necro are strongest condition classes atm, Ranger is on the upper or lower end, depending on who you ask and what they’ve fought.

Mesmer and thief would be what you consider toxic, PU and just about any thief build that uses stealth.

I get it all right by the op’s definitions?

I see a lot of roamers asking if they should use traveller runes, and the answer to it is simple, no, buy whatever ruins suite your play style the best, then in place of your oil etc, use “swift Moa feathers” you can buy them off the trading post for 30s, and they give you a 25% speed increase, this way you can optimise your stats how you wish, and still get that invaluable speed increase us guardians need to roam

Edit:they also last for 30minutes

Just have a quick question about this skill in regards to pvp: Why does it exist???

Seriously, i’d be fine if it changed my 1-5 weapon skills to something less usefull, but completely removing my heal skill, all my utilities, my elite skill… that’s just plain ridiculous.
In 1v1 situations, it’s probably not going to break your game entirely, but in a fight with at least one more person where you get morphed, you’re dead.
No stunbreak/condition clear/heal, makes this skill pretty much an i-win button in so many cases.

This patch brought NOTHING to guardians but a heavy nerf (vigor).

All the GM traits are trash…even worse so.

A passive GRANDMASTER trait that gives 3k health in the hopes to fix the huge HP disparity with warriors? Boring and will never get picked over Pure of Voice.

Communal defenses sounded cool until we found out it didn’t give back aegis to the guardian AND had a 20 sec internal cooldown.

Virtues trait tries to balance the nerf to Vigor but fails because traits X and IX will ALWAYS be better. if I even went 30 points in virtues I would sure as hell pick IX and X, never this new trait.

And now, the best for last…the zeal and radiance traits…

What can I say, I thought they were a joke at the start, but lo and behold, they were not. Funny thing is that we already have another grandmaster trait in zeal which also buffs burn damage, so I wonder, why have 2 traits only the same trait line which pretty much do the same thing? Are the devs braindead when it comes to guardians? Do none of the QA ever play guardians? Was this trait a mistake?

Radiant retaliation….equally as bad as the zeal trait… Anet hopes to push guardians towards a condi heavy build while giving the class no means to apply any other cover condies nor have a reliable ranged way to spam conditions ala necro, thief, warrior, etc.
Again, this trait is an absolute joke.

Why is the community ignored when it comes to this class? Guardian is now the most boring and 1 dimentional class in the game and everyday guardian veterans and switching over to warriors.

Why are our spirit weapons STILL broken to this day? Why are half our signets worthless?

Looking for ranger youtubers.

Both have their builds either posted in the videos or in these forums and both seem to work very well in WvW and PvP.

Best advice I could give is try these before you try a longbow ranger (I haven’t even unlocked the weapon skills for longbow yet after over a thousand hours on my ranger) so you can get used to the dodges and evades of the other weapons.

And try not to listen to anyone that says “best ranger build is to reroll a warrior”, with practice, skill and a decent build, you’ll destroy most warriors you come across.

The Updates did wonders for PvP.

Before the update, it had felt kind of pointless getting new PVP items because you can only use them in PvP and it’s impossible to know if your opponents have team colors turned on, anyway. But since the items are now usable in PvE, they feel a bit more universal, and more valuable, and the only thing I ever bought with glory was Level-up books, and I’ve been getting a good deal of those along with skill scrolls.

The Mega-Server system seems to compliment the Mists pretty well, too. Even at a weird hour in the early morning there were a decent number of people shambling about in the Mists, so it didn’t feel as lonely as it usually does.

I’m also really appreciating the quarter-second reduction on the A.E.D. skill as an engineer.

We get a lot of people kittening on the message boards so I thought it was important to let the devs know their work is indeed appreciated by some people. Two thumbs up.

Hello.
Well i realy dont understand this, maybe someone can clear this out for me?
Guardian is a meele class, with much less mobility than warrior, (almost no mobility).
Lowest health pool in the game? how can a meele class that got such a low mobility have such a low health pool while having same toughness as warrior?
i just dont know what makes up for that low health pool.
If we had atleast 15k base health it would be bad yeah, but not that bad, but 11k..
the staff speed buff lasts too short unless you stack it up which means you have to stand at the same place.

Honestly i wouldnt be disappointed with the class at all, if we had more health and more mobility, its realy sad to always see your team getting ahead and youre behind so slow :/

Thanks for replying, im not trying to be rude, i just realy dont know what to say.

Virtues have been said to help balance the guardian; for example, they have a lower base health than the warrior profession but compensate for this with their higher health regeneration granted by Virtue of Resolve

lol thats a lie warrior has more health and more regeneration

Congratulations!

You found a good example for the bad and destroyed classbalance of this game. But this happen, if they try to balance 3 different gamemodes, every with his own rules and Dis/Advantages, at the same time.

The same happen in GW1 for a long time, before they accept, that they cant control it. And GW1 have much more skills than GW2.

Oddly enough, there’s a topic here with people saying they were moved to tears by the graveyard & memorial scenes in LA. Personally, I’m not as invested emotionally in the story, but I don’t go around saying that they suck for liking it.

For those that are saying, “It’s just a game”, “It’s just a movie”, “It’s just a book”, “It’s just a song” … quality works of fiction & literature and art can always invoke emotion in us. I’m not exactly sure if the emotions invoked in the case of Marjory’s lack of tact and incredibly awkward joke options were what the devs were going for, but kitten it, for me it was thought-provoking, more than all of the hero teams’ little adventures put together.

Know why? I said it before, I couldn’t care less about Marjory, Kasmeer and rest of their scooby-doo gang. But I care about my character. In a RP sense, none of those options are those I would say. And this is still a RPG, want it or not. I want my character to say things that make sense in the context. They should’ve put there at least one “respect the dead” – option.

I get that Scarlet was the villain, but I felt horrible listening to Marjory and the others joke about her death.

Previous LS updates established that she’s been driven crazy by some external force that she encountered in the Eternal Alchemy and could no longer mentally fight it. We should pity her or mourn for those she’s killed, not make childish jokes about what it felt like to deliver the death blow.

Not to be rude here, but I’m genuinely curious – do dialogue ideas get checked before they are added? If so, did no one suggest that joking about killing a mentally unstable character might be in poor taste?
