This is why I love being a historian.
If ANet knew their European history, they would know that the ability to purchase officer’s commissions between the 17th and 19th centuries led to highly incompetent armed forces. The greatest of the early modern period’s armies (Prussia) never used allowed such a practice and consequently was able to win wars where they were literally surrounded on all sides by hostile nations.
Why then would ANet include a system in game that mimics one of the greatest systemic military blunders in history?
Because this is a video game, not the real world. There is no organized military force (non-NPC) in game for professionally training and ranking commanders. Nor should there be; either hiring a group of people for this purpose or doing it themselves would be a waste of money and resources on ANet’s part.
Instead of making unrealistic comparisons, how about some constructive suggestions? For example: a rating system. Allow players to +1 a commander. Players can only +1 a particular commander once, and cannot -1, though they can rescind their +1 if they desire. When hovering your mouse over a commander’s tag you see their rating # underneath their name. This would prevent trolls/rivalries from downvoting commanders into oblivion, while allowing anyone to easily see how respected/successful a commander is.
Did my craziest ever solo stunt tonight. I didn’t expect to actually get it done, but I completely solod a full level 50 run FotM. I don’t know if anyone has done this yet but I probably won’t ever do it again because the chances of getting the fractals that I did are so low it’s insane.
It took me about 5 hours overall, and the raw footage is here:
http://www.twitch.tv/purpleishawt/c/4277337
I had this:
Underwater Ruins
Ascalonian City
Aetherblade Retreat
Jade Maw
Like, holy mother of RNG…? I’m not even as happy about not getting dredge as I am not getting harpy fractal, holy crap. I was expecting Mai Trin and was looking forward to finally getting a chance to attempt a level 50 solo of her (did a sloppy 49 mai trin solo a while ago) but it felt pretty relieving to get something I knew I’d be able to do in a reasonable amount of time after all of that effort.
The absolute toughest 2 parts of the full run were…
1) Krait at the start in Underwater Ruins. O-M-F-G it was awful. Could barely clear 1 of them at a time, took me I think 2 repairs.
2) Most challenging of all, the final encounter in Aetherblade Retreat. I’m actually pretty proud of myself for it, but I’m sure there are people who can do a less sloppy job than mine.
I took it upon myself to highlight the Aetherblade boss fight itself, which was just under 10 minutes. http://www.twitch.tv/purpleishawt/c/4277500
P.S. I did not have any help other than my friend joining instance while I char selected to go repair armor (placeholding for me so I wouldn’t have to lose instance). I gave him the daily at the end, along with 3 other guildmates of mine. We all got kitten loot as always. Ty Arenanet, #1 Loot system.
-
P.S. If you want to see, Goku Destroys U and I have been trying to go for a sub-40 Arah P4 duo record. This was our best attempt so far, a ~46 minute one. He doesn’t want to upload until we reach our goal :P but I will highlight mine because it was a smooth run: http://www.twitch.tv/purpleishawt/c/4277372
We WILL get it, it just is really hard to have everything go just right in one run
The simin kill was astonishingly fast… 3:04 duo warr/warr: http://www.twitch.tv/purpleishawt/c/4277387
Hope you enjoy, and that I won’t see you all in Linksville anytime soon. Pls no.

I don’t really agree that rangers were built around bows. When I think ranger I think Aragorn. But meh. Semantics.
And all who stood by and did nothing, who are they to criticize the sacrifices of others?
Our blood has bought their lives.
If it is considered respectful for others not to interfere in your fun, would it not be just as respectful for you to not interfere in theirs? Food for thought.
or simply realizing that the Order of Whispers are really good at hiding their secret base.
RIP City of Heroes
What is this!? A potion for ants? It needs to be….at least 25 % bigger than this.
You don’t need Ascended armor. The stat increase over Exotics is minor. So if you’ve given up on getting these, you can still play the game as normal.
Opening up the Dominion during the destruction of the city and introducing Tengu as playable shortly after would be a wonderful move. This is absolutely the perfect opportunity to bring them into the fold and I think Anet would be making a huge mistake not to.

Not everyone will get it but I just wanted to note we do appreciate it!
anyone post this yet?
Heya,
Sanderinoa here with the first solo out of a couple of planned projects.
I know its not that impressive at all, but I just had to do a video soloing all wisps, enjoy the music, look at the first minute or so and click away, or stick around for another silly bloomhunger kill which you can see by the hits Im taking would likely not be any harder at higher levels.
I purposely didn’t log in to Guild Wars 2 for a week for 2 reasons:
- 1 to prevent burn out.
- 2 to see how I would view the game after a week of playing other mmo’s.
The result is well read on:
- In that week I played aion, STO, Rift, Neverwinter, Tera, Eden Eternal, Vindictus, Aura kingdom and so on you get the picture.
What I found is that:
- They all have awkward camera’s that are not smooth, at all !
- character responsiveness is awful.
- reaction times are awful.
- Boring combat.
- quality of life is none existent, when compared to GW.
- messy, badly coded interfaces, and ugly as hell.
- GCD, this didn’t use to bother me at all now I can’t stand it.
- need target to cast anything, annoying much.
- No global Trading post, yeah I missed it.
- art style, I’m gonna censor myself here.
Conclusion
A lot of people say Guild Wars 2 lacks this and that and whatever.
But I say to you, all those other games are missing a hell of a lot more
that we as GW2 players take for granted everyday.
I believe we have been spoiled so much by all the nice good features of GW2 that now we expect an even higher level of quality and polish
The fact of the matter is give credit where credit is due
Guild Wars 2 is an amazing game with many small things in it we take for granted and because they seem so small you might not give it a second thought and think all games out there have those features, when the reality is, I have yet to see any other game that has as much polish, attention to detail and quality of life features as GW2 has, not even wow comes close to this level of refinement, yes I dropped the elephant in the room !
Many consider wow the pinnacle of polish, well I’m here to tell you that is no longer true and hasn’t been since the day GW2 launched.
I’m not saying GW2 is perfect, cough RNG cough Time gating !
but when put into perspective against all the crap that is swirling the ether,
GW2 is a 24k diamond in the rough
That shoe on the papyrus. Could that be her…

I wish I could make a thread about eliminating complaining about stacking.
Did it get nerfed since the livestream? I haven’t touched it yet but when the developers demonstrated it they healed 16K in under a second by AoEing into a crowd.
Even if it healed for 100k during a crowd AoE… how practical is that generally?
In SPvP, as a control guardian or a bunker, pretty darn practical. Your job isn’t to get kills it is to stymie the enemy’s effort go get kills. If you die guaranteeing your four teammates an ace and a control point or two you have done your job excellently.

AH IS selfish. You can provide useful boons in a full dps spec while obviously not being a DPS burden on the team.
And no, full DPS builds don’t have “less DPS uptime” unless you’re terrible at the game. Even so you could run zerk hammer 15/25/0/20/10 which provides more support than a useless AH dungeon build while also providing much more DPS. The 200 extra vitality and permanent protection will help to keep you alive.
There is no reason to run AH in a dungeon. If you were sick of the DPS meta you would benefit the team more by running a condition removal heavy spec (which most AH builds aren’t since the best condi removal trait guardians have is 20 virtues) rather than a build that serves little purpose other than to keep you alive.
0/0/30/20/20 With hammer and longer lasting symbols.
Perma prot, 2x AoE party removal. STG for stability, WoR shield and purging flames as necessary. 5x more survivability than your typical glass cannon build.
Explain to me how this build is selfish?
Taking out the 30 points in valor means you can put 15 in zeal for maintaining 5-6 vuln from auto attacking and 15 in radiance for blind and vuln spam. With that you will be negating damage to your group instead of absorbing it for just yourself and stuff will drop faster with all the vuln you stack on foes. That’s why it is selfish and a lot of points better spent. There is also the DPS gain from the 10% trait and the stat points. Valor stops being useful to your group at 10 points for strength in numbers. It is pretty underwhelming past that.
I’d vote for being able to salvage them for guaranteed Ascended mats (Bloodstone/Empyreal/Dragonite) and 1 – 3 Ecto, with a chance to get Dark Matter and Mist Essence.
The fractal is fine. It does not need to be split up. People who know what they’re doing can beat it in about 30 minutes on average.
.
Show me those people.
I think those people that they are referencing are lower levels, there is no way that the clown car is fine at 40s. Just there alone is like 20~15 min.
About six minutes for a high DPS group at the old scale 48.
Here’s a video I was able to find of a level 48 run. They engage at 3:06 into the video and end at 9:33.
It takes much less time at lower level fractals where the majority of players sit at.
Here’s a group doing the entire fractal in 20 minutes.
And one more of a lower level fractal in a pug group of random classes doing it in 23 minutes.
The point of these links is to show that the fractal length is not completely unreasonable. It’s only when you have unskilled and/or players unfamiliar with the mechanics who don’t work as a team where you’ll have a much longer fractal. This is not the fault of the design of the dungeon.

Abyss dye dropped on my birthday from farming spinach. I had just gotten the human cultural Tier 3 armor for my guardian.
3 months later, another dropped at the same spot on the day my guildmate needed the exact amount it sold for on the TP. Was fun to just hand him the money without thinking.
It’s a simple question really. I find most people like to complain over the flaws of the game, but I’d like to focus on things the game does right; the ones I and others enjoy the most.
1. The Wallet – I love rolling new characters, having not only my gold, but all the other currencies at my fingertips without going to a bank/etc is quite amazing. I wish EVERY MMO did this.
2. Diverse PvE experience – There’s just so much you can do PvE-wise, and in chasing down creating a legendary weapon, you essentially have to experience 90-95% of what the game has to offer.
3. The fact that there’s not just one dedicated PvP experience, but two. They both cater to different crowds and for different reasons, and though they may not perfect, they’re really amazing in my opinion.
4. The leveling process – Though it’s not as good as it was before, you can still get to a really high level with crafting alone. Overall, there are just so many methods to leveling that it’s quite amazing.. more ways than I’ve seen in any other MMO.
5. The Endgame – Many complain about the “grind” that you need to do in order to get ascendeds. In my opinion it simply comes down to a ton of effort, not grind (really, you complain about GRIND in GW2? It’s almost baffling). Besides Ascendedry, I love the endgame experience of the game and how there’s so much for you to do even if none of it includes PvE.
Why do you need 1000g? I have 40g and I’m content.
In my opinion, the karma nerf was horrendous and totally unwarranted.
There is a spot in the middle of the Lion’s Arch harbor where a rock lies submerged just below the surface. This is a hazard to navigation, and there is no warning buoy. I am doing my job as a concerned citizen, standing out there waving off ships until the city engineers can either remove the rock or put up a warning.
In the meanwhile, it is getting dark. Could someone please bring out a light, and perhaps a sandwich as well?
Set a man on fire, and he’ll be warm the rest of his life.
