DS is always going to screw up necro balance in its current state

I like DS as it is now. It is a novel mechanic and gives GW2 necromancers a unique flair.

I am very much against homogenizing them by removing this fun ability.

DS is a great ability and I want it to stay.

If you are really so much against it, play a mesmer or an engineer and see if you like them better. Plenty of people like necromancers now. There is no reason for them to screw up its core mechanic just because you are not in favor of it.

Hey all—we hear you loud and clear. Thank you all for your feedback.

One challenge with some of the emergent issues is that when certain portions of our game experience issues, the forums will also be affected. As such, when we had login issues yesterday, as you know, we could not post any messaging that was hosted on our infrastructure because the forums were completely unavailable . With that, we relied on social media channels, which do not live on our infrastructure. As you might be aware, other big companies like Twitter will also handle outages this way—posting messaging on channels that are not hosted on their infrastructure.

Having said that, whenever we can for emergent issues (when they do not impact our infrastructure), we should be using the system broadcast on the forums for outages.

With regard to the current outage: at this time all commerce sites (Trading Post, Currency Exchange, Gem Store) are down right now and undergoing maintenance. We will provide an ETA as soon as we are able to.

Thanks again, everyone.

Thank you very much for responding to our concerns and for your informative post.

We appreciate it and keep up the good work!

Is it worth continuing with my Necro

by all means, reroll now. dont waste a single more second on a soon to be dead class, unless you feel some kind of twisted pleasure in being a unique snowflake…in that case the necro is custom tailored to you, because sooner rather than later everybody will abandon their necros

This is a good example of the sort of post I was talking about.

Konrad (hopefully!) doesn’t really believe that “sooner of later everybody will abandon their necros” (unless he is just talking about when you stop playing the game, in which case it would be true for any profession.)

My guess is that he likes the profession but wants buffs now and so is purposefully going into ridiculous hyperbole.

My advice to him would be that arguments are more persuasive when they are more concrete and down-to-earth. i.e., less hyperbole might help him accomplish his goals more. Maybe just choose one or two specific things he wants buffed/fixed, and just keep mentioning those in a rational manner with examples.

Theorgen: Good, it really is that simple. It’s a game. If you are having fun with the necro, then keep playing.
If you are not, then don’t.

The devs have to balance cautiously. Thieves went from almost everyone saying they were underpowered in beta to almost everyone saying they were overpowered upon release in the blink of an eye.

Eventually, things will get pretty well balanced, although admittedly it might take a long time. So play if you enjoy it and not otherwise.

Also, if you have been on other official MMO forums, you will realize that they are cry-baby whine-fests. Seriously, people exaggerate the faults of professions to the point of absurdity. It is partially because they want a buff (or, if they are playing an overpowered job, to avoid a nerf) so it is in their best interest to downplay any effectiveness of a class/job/profession. In addition to this, you get the natural tendency of people to attribute any failure that occurs while they play to the profession and not their own experience and/or abilities. Unfortunately, all of this combines to result in the whine-fest you currently see in the necro forum. Some might be serious, but many complaints should not be taken at face value, especially ones that act like necros are only 1/10 as effective as other professions or other ridiculous claims.

P.S.: Yes, there are bugs. The game was just released. This is perfectly normal. Give it time. Trust me, I have played almost all of the recent MMOs, and GW2 is relatively stable and bug-free.

I really like DS--probably don't play necro if you do not like it

I mained a mesmer in GW1 and really can’t bear to play the GW2 mesmer. I only briefly played the GW1 necro but I really love the GW2 necro. Maybe if I had played the GW1 necro (or necro in some other game) then I would not like the GW2 necro because I would be constantly comparing them and seeing that they are different. And of course people’s rose-colored glasses immediately transform different into worse.

But instead I played necro in beta and loved it. Pressing the death shroud button and getting another life bar was really fun. It let me do things that would have been suicidal on the mesmer I was also playing (and not liking.)

I think that they managed to get a real nice profession out of the GW2 necro. I really don’t understand all of the people who say they have played a necro to 80 and hate death shroud. Really? Are you stupid or something? It is the core mechanic. You got it immediately. If it took you that long to realize you didn’t like the core mechanic, why were you still playing? Masochism?

For example, if I played an elementalist and disliked the ability to switch elements (not real example, just theoretical) then I would just let it lie and do something else. For a non-theoretical example, I think clones are stupid. Did I play a mesmer to 80 thinking clones were stupid and complaining the whole time about it? Of course not. I played a bit in beta, realized that I didn’t like them, and so naturally am just not playing a mesmer now. It’s not really rocket science folks.

Obviously, necro still has some bugs that need to get worked out. Obviously, if those bugs directly influence your playstyle then they are going to annoy you a lot. But just give it time. I think the profession has a lot of potential and is quite fun.

We have death shroud for an extra lifebar. We have the highest lifebar/health in the game (tied with warrior.) These are good things. Everyone says dagger/ sucks but I am running a well-spec’d dagger/focus build now and I think dagger/ just peels off the health of others. And wells do absolute AOE mayhem.

I guess what I am saying is, give the profession a chance on its own merits and stop comparing it to GW1 or some other MMO or your dream prof. And for god’s sake, if you hate death shroud just play another profession and leave us in peace, because if you hate the core mechanic it is HIGHLY unlikely you are ever going to like the profession and all you are doing is complaining for the sake of complaining…

I play a necro, but I traid a warrior for one play session...

I really like the tanky aspect of necros with DS and their already naturally high (tied with warrior) health pools. The idea of a tanky cloth profession is rather novel.

I have been having a lot of fun with a dagger/focus and well build. I think it’s a blast to play (and is my main.)

A lot of people’s complaints seem not really to be about balance, but instead about what they wish things were. Like they want death shroud to have more of a dps role, or they don’t envision necromancers as being tanky, etc.

I think maybe what is most meant by “learning to master DS” (since obviously it is quite easy to “master”) is “learn to play the profession you have, not the one you want it to be.” If you just played what is there rather than pipe-dreaming about some entirely different profession with entirely different mechanics, then you would probably: (a) Do a better job with it, because you would be playing what is there; and (b) Feel better about things.

This is not to say that fixes would not be nice. That the greater marks trait for staff is bugged drive me crazy, for example.

Necro traits that simply dont work

This seems nicer than the other “traits don’t work” thread.

The other one didn’t like the “stability for 3 sec with DS” trait, which I like a lot.

This one I agree with, and it points out several bugs (greater marks I am looking at you.)
