Ideas for new condi-esque weapon skills

Alright, we all know that Anet wants condi-guardian to be a thing, but most if not all of a guardians weapon skills wouldn’t really…. Work with a supposed condi-guard. That’s not to say a guardians utility skills aren’t “condi-esque” some of them seem like they would work well in a condi build, but the weapons we actually have equipped and use 85% of the time don’t seem like they could work with a condi-guardian, except for torch and that’s it. I propose we come up with a few ideas that could be implemented to change TRAIT/WEAPON skills for the guardian, specifically pertaining to abilities that you’d expect a condition guardian to have.

For example:

change Orb of Light, into some sort of fire projectile

Or change the passive Zeal trait symbolic exposure into one that gives symbols burning damage instead of vulnerability

Please try and come up with something worthwhile and make sure to put a little thought into what you want to suggest. If you don’t want condi-guard to be a thing, then simply don’t comment and let us come up with ideas to make condi-guard a reality.

In perfect scenarios youl fire a epidemic every 20 seconds. If you just take asciis wvw builds you have a reliable damage burst every 30s seconds. Or go like nemesis, full glass and pierce stuff to death with lich and ds#1 autos. The bigger the zerg, the more power is better, especialy if theres skill lag

We need more armors with Boon duration as a major stat, Anets original idea for the guardian was a boon-centric class. Why not give us armors that allow us to actually utilize your original idea, while also giving us 2 minor stats that will actually help in combat. Boon Duration, Power, Toughness would be really cool to see

That would make someone either too tanky or too squishy, the reason why armors have minor traits is to make sure they are more balanced… And that you don’t melt like ice cream or become a god and never die due to like 5,000 toughness :I

Unfortunately in zergs, conditions are cleansed to quickly that it’s kind of a waste

That’s not entirely true. I use my Corrupt boon and epedemic on guadians alot. And I always see the condi icons everywhere.

Most people speak in generalizations about WvW. In the perfect world of one 40 man hypercoordinated blob vs. another of similar size and shape, conditions are not just kind of useless, they are entirely useless.

However, most of the time, people see a large group and assume that it is that hypercoordinated blob, when it is just a blob.

In a lot of cases as a necro if you wait for stab to drop on a push, you can “peel” someone who is light on stun breaks (an up level or a necro generally), and load that person up for an epidemic, or down them and epidemic from there. Most blobs are not nearly as good at clearing conditions as you think they are, and you can setup a good screen by keeping downed targest as disease carriers.

But yeah…. if it is a strong guild group, moving tight, conditions don’t work. That is not all that common, but a good tip-off is that the entire blob is comprised of guardian, elemementalist, warrior, a few necros, and a few thieves, and 1-2 mesmers.

But forcing them to use their condi cleanse is still helpful in a way

Alright, so I don’t know if the trait is vague on purpose, but it says “apply vulnerability to yourself. Spread conditions on a target foe to all surrounding foes” the radius is 600, does that mean that if an entire zerg is stacked up and I use Signet of Spite and then Epidemic, I’ll hit them all? Or is there a cap?

I say we don’t tell them what servers were on. I’m guessing they will just overprice transfers to complaining server for next seasons league and that’s how they will TOTALLY fix this lag issue. ALL server are having massive lag spikes in massive battles, we don’t need to tell you what server’s were on when it’s happening across the board.

If they’re going to GvG in a Borderland, run over them. Bring your zerg down there and steamroll them until they leave. Make it no fun for them. Take control of your own Borderlands, don’t ask Anet to do this for you. This one is a no brainer. It’s the things like afk’ers and crafters in WvW that Anet needs to do something about.

Just make sure your zerg isn’t brainless or your going to get stomped and embarrassed, most guilds have other members spectating so they can switch in for other classes. Meaning that a 15 man guild group could turn into a 25-30 man guild zerg in a matter of seconds. And even outnumbered a single guild zerg can destroy super blobs.

Doesn’t really matter. Keep interrupting the GvGs and they’ll eventually leave.

That’s very optimistic of you, but getting wiped multiple times (if it happens) could cause people to get frustrated and leave, making your attempts at stopping the GvG much harder. And please don’t start saying that you’ll just keep persevering and trying to interrupt them all night, because blindly running at groups to stop them usually ends badly, and it makes you look stupid

2 people can interrupt GvGs, let alone an entire zerg. If the point is to have a GvG that night, if you keep interrupting them for 30-60 mins, they’ll move off the map.

Not much of an interrupt if your own server tells them to stomp 2 people on the side, I don’t know how you think GvG’s function, but fights don’t last very long and are usually only a few rounds. Basically what I’m trying to say is that no matter how much you attempt to be stern and stubborn and “be in the right” the only thing you are going to get yourself is a plethora of laugh taunts and wasted silver from respawning.

So currently there is a bug that if the thief manages to interrupt a mesmer with the basilisk venom he will proc halting strike on the mesmer which will get fixed BUT please also make sure to fix the proc of chaotic interruption as well which is the exact same thing basically

Risk and reward on thief:

The main problem I want to point out is attacking when in stealth

If the thief hits the target he will get revealed BUT let’s say the enemy has aegis it will first rip off aegis without revealing him -> attacking an enemy out of stealth should always reveal the thief imo

If the thief uses his shortbow autoattack in stealth it will immobilise the target But since you can clearly see the shot coming you will try to evade it…if the attack gets evaded (actually any attack out of stealth) it will not reveal the thiekitteno actually it is better for the target not to dodge any attack out of stealth until the stealth runs out and instead take all the damage? not a good mechanic imo -> missing an attack when stealthed should always reveal the thief -> adding risk to thief

Evasive Shot Shortbow #3
spammable evade on weaponset -> not sure if I have to explain why this is a bad mechanic
the only difference between flanking strike and evasive shot is that you can’t chain flanking strike which doesn’t make it thaaaat strong

Shortbow autoattack:
Pretty much THE counter on this weaponset vs mesmer
If you dodge on mesmer you leave a clone behind which means dodging is almost useless vs thief because the attack will bounce from the clone to you resulting in mesmer not being able to create a bigger gap between himself and the thief without taking damage – my idea is to make the attack bounce only once

I hope this thread was constructive and clear and I would love to get some constructive feedback on this

A thief who spams short bow #3 is using up the initiative, he’s basically left vulnerable for you to try and kill him, if he tries to capitalize and switch weapons to attack you he’s gong to be running on low initiative, sorry but I don’t see this as a problem at all.

……… Don’t most thieves run that trait that makes initiative regen faster while stealthed :/

Lolwut?! Removing an aegis doesn’t reveal the thief? And missing attacks doesn’t either? I just thought all thieves were really good at stealthing and always hitting their target. This changes my perspective on this class, I thought my aegis would protect me from a 1st attack then revealing him so I could strike (mains guardian) but THIS is how stealth functions? Good lord this needs to be fixed

I’m on Vizunah Square (EU), and I’ve just saw a guild (I won’t give names here) GvGing in the Borderlands while there are 50+ people queues on all the maps… except on the obsidian sanctum.

Is there a way, any way, to report this kind of behavior? What can we do against this??

Do you know what happened the last time an anet guy tried to interfere with a GvG in game? The entire forums exploded and Anet issued a formal apology to everyone for the persons actions. Happened on SBI a while ago, saw the entire thing happen. The guy had his dev tag up and walked over near the spectating spot and started getting mad, said something along the lines of “You’re ruining my game mod” while people were spectating a GvG. If I remember correctly, all the spectators pretty much tore the guy a new one and a forum post was put up with pictures and everything.

You can still find it in the WvW discussion subforum if you look hard enough

Intel processors outperform AMD for like 3-4 years straight so it shouldn’t be surprising. MMO’s are CPU bound by nature, Intel makes better CPU’s, so if you are building for this game get an Intel CPU.

The only thing they need to fix is is server side issues like skill lag in large fights. Increasing AoE caps just isn’t going to happen when you think about how much server stress you’d be adding.

Just looked up the pricing for some intel processors, that is absurdly expensive. It doesn’t matter if they out perform them, if the game was properly optimized to use cores efficiently then overclocking would be an easy solution

I agree with the optimizations. Only ANET would truly know what they need to optimize. I was suggesting places to start looking though.

I want them to work more on the AMD optimizations. I think they may have mentioned it at some point. I built a new gaming rig with an Intel processor after noticing my Intel based gaming laptop performed better at GW2 than my AMD desktop (with a better gfx card) when they were both set to the same graphics settings. That 220% performance boost is a fairly accurate estimate of going from 20hz framerate in the middle of the vigil keep to 44 hz in the middle of the vigil keep on max settings.

It’s seriously THAT good on intel?

Yes it is. I used the FPS readout from the options menu and measured 3 systems I have. All my systems have 8gb ram. These tests were done during fairly peak hour on saturday in the middle of the vigil keep looking west from the mystic forge. All systems set to the same graphics settings.

System 1: Intel i7 2.0ghz (fairly old i7 from 3 years ago) Geforce 540m (laptop) – 26fps
System 2: AMD Phenom 3ghz 8 core black edition (first gen of this one), Geforce 760, GW2 on SSD (desktop)- 22fps
System 3: Intel i7 3770k 3.5ghz, same Geforce 760 from system 2, SSD for OS and GW2 on separate SSD (same ssd from system 2) 48fps.
Max settings 42fps.

Something was up when I saw that my 2ghz i7 laptop (first gen i7 mind you) was outperforming my 3ghz AMD desktop. Now I see a lot of talk that straight up clock rate isn’t a good comparison. The way I understand it is that the clock rate does play an important factor in how well a processor can process its threads.
The comparison between system 1 and 2 is where I notice the intel optimizations in GW2’s client though. System 2 should all around destroy system 1 in performance right? Faster processor, faster video card. Same other components. So why was it slower in FPS than the laptop? This prompted me to build a new gaming rig with the same processor I use at my work for biometrics.

I chose the i7 3770k for that third one based on a comparison test I did at work on an i5 system. Application I was using matched biometrics at .20 seconds for a 300 record db at first. Upgrading from i5 to i7 dropped that to .10 seconds, a whole 100% speed boost. Applying the intel compiler to the code optimized it even more, down to .07 seconds.

I was quite pleased and shocked to see the performance boost in GW2 that I did. Max settings and it only flinches with Maguuma’s 70 man map blobs and then it only goes down to 20hz. Compared to the 5hz I was getting in those map blobs it’s a major improvement. Being able to fight at 20hz made me able to dodge hammer trains in those blobs.

TL;DR
Switching from my AMD cpu to an intel CPU increased performance that much. It highlights the need for ANET to implement AMD optimizations. Granted my old AMD CPU is no match for a latest Intel i7. The performance increase should not have been that great.

So what ppl do not understand what AoE caps do for the game and players game play beyond letting more ppl fight in one big fight it gives reason for ppl to move as groups to be well organized and to time there attks with there other team mates. For there to be no AoE you will see spam spam spam with no real organization other then do not get to close to each other making the game less about tactics and more about staying away from your own team.

Gettin’ off topic man, this post wasn’t for “balancing” issues with WvW, If you want that then make a post about AoE cap limits. This is about lag in game and what Anet needs to do to patch it and make everyone happier

On another note, I have a Nvidia GTX 670 4GB and it runs very well for the game. I still get crazy lag in WVW when zergs collide (like 100+ players/skills on screen) and sometimes it gets to be a slideshow when all 3 zergs meet, but other than that it runs fairly well. You can always use the zerg lag as a early warning thing so you don’t turn a corner and get demolished by an entire server. On highest settings I can get about 20-30 FPS, Auto Detect 30-60 FPs, and Best Performance 90+ FPS (it literally does so well that everything goes in slow motion, it’s crazy).

There’s the issue, the servers can’t handle 100+ players on screen but Anet hasn’t made any decisions to MAKE the servers handle 100+ players. We need patches and updates that make things function 100% of the time. Why would I want to run into a 3 way fight if I know the servers won’t be able to handle it and I won’t even be able to use my healing skill for an entire minute after pressing it? The major issues are in-game skill lag, then under that is CPU optimization, those are some of the biggest issues in this game. We don’t need “April Fun content Patch” we need serious commitment from the devs to get rid of these wrinkles in the game that cause this lag.

I am just saying that we been using the same builds for a long time, not trying to argue if we have one of the strongest builds or not; Just that we’ve using the same builds.

You know your class has no variety when you blow gold on dire gear to make a fake burn guardian just to humor yourself and do something “different” lol

Even bought trinkets, gold down the drain just to suck out the last remaining entertainment in the guardian profession

Supposedly (I’ve seen mention of this and also witnessed it in game) the reason that AOE is capped is that they calculate the damage that a skill can do on the fly for every tick. AOE ticks, condition damage ticks, condition durations, counter duration all on the fly. This means an operation such as swinging an axe easily takes 100 calculations when it should take 5 and casting an AOE does even more.

That said OMFG wouldn’t change the AOE cap as that is a game balance issue more than a server performance issue. Below is a bullet that ANET wouldn’t eat because its how everyone else does it, but it’s one they should eat for the good of their game.
All damage capable effects have their damage calculated at the start of their effect, and afterward maintain that damage rate no matter what change happens to their owner’s buffs.
Basically if you casted a necromancer well at 25 stack might and a second later it all faded the well would continue to damage like you had 25 stacks of might on. This is to prevent the server from wasting calculations and bandwidth on changing this to match the might stacks.

If ANET does that then they can save from what I could gather 50% of the computation cost for all the skills characters use in the game. This wouldn’t change the AOE cap I’ll add though. That cap is a skill balance issue rather than a server performance issue. Since i’d estimate 70% of character skills in the game are some kind of AOE it would make large scale combat dependent on how much AOE your side carried. It still kind of does but not to an extreme extent.

The second thing I’d do if I was in ANET is start working on some AMD optimizations. As of now if you have an AMD processor in your computer you’re pretty much screwed in terms of framerate in Guildwars 2. GW2 uses the processor more than anything else. I upgraded from a 3 GHZ AMD processor (one of the top ones) to an Intel i7 and saw a near 220% increase in performance in GW2. It’s pathetic that a AAA game title can perform so badly on AMD processors. IMO this one would take a higher ranking as it also affects PVE and Living Story.

I appreciate the talk about AoE but those calculations aren’t even the biggest issues, many people (those that know what they are talking about mind you) have already given there opinion as to why skill lag and lag in general is caused in GW2. These people are veterans in their fields and have a lot of incite and interesting theories as to the underlying issues. But I made this post not just to talk about AoE calculations, but the game as a whole. For Planetside 2, they had to almost completely do over entire continent sized maps because there were too many single items (boxes and useless things) taking up calculating space, also the UI itself was causing massive issues. And the game was poorly optimized for even the most powerful of CPU’s. But GW2 is suffering from poor optimization

I’ve got a hex-core and from what I can see, this game is barely optimized to use more than 4. My brother has a quad core AMD and I have a Hex core, both OC’d to 3.5 Ghz. Same graphics cards too! But his game runs better than mine, these are the issues that need to be fixed, we don’t need “The April Patch Extravaganza” we need a faster, smoother, and more optimized MMO experience

To start, they should completely update the engine to allow more AoE targets without slowing down their servers. Just being able to hit an additional 1 or 2 people per AoE would make a radical difference in improving WvW zerg fighting.

Well that amount of people being hit by an AoE is limited for a reason, if they changed it by even 1 things could drastically change

Guardians are in a better spot than any other profession in the game in pretty much every aspect of the game:

PvE
Guards give DPS nearly on par with warriors while bringing reflects rivaled only by mesmers. They have 2 high end, meta builds (look up Obal’s guides for these). Most professions have 1 meta build and some have none (necros).

in groups guardians deal more dps than warriors.

In groups Warriors can passively outheal a guardians dps -__-

You see, you re-arranged the line, so warriors healing signet is overpowered.; And that’s the thing. You put the “good spot”, what you don’t get is there is no such thing; Because different professions are different.
You can say damage is balanced when two professions are roughly doing the same damage (in reality). You are confusing balance with “good spot”, does Wall of Reflection makes Guardians overpower compared to Warriors? That’s a relative thing on how much having it changes how the battle goes.

A good spot is something relative, and I assume you know what relative means right? A good spot is something that depends on the “philosophy” behind the design. A good spot in imbalanced game is what you said “excitement, variety, or openness of meta.” along with the balance that I am talking about (Damaged, endurance, Etc).

Or perhaps you mean that a good spot is someone who can fill multiple roles (not at the same time of course)?

No, you’re trying to mis-define things to mean what you like rather than what they are. Classes can fill different roles and still be balanced. Guardians don’t do as much damage as other classes, but they’re better at mitigating it for themselves and others. That’s balance. Guardians don’t have selfish mobility like some other classes do, but they provide more bonuses to their allies than those mobility classes do. That’s balance.

What you’re talking about doesn’t have anything to do with balance/imbalance. You’re bored of the current meta, and possibly don’t even actually like the class and want change. That’s not a balance issue, and “a good spot” has always been about their balance.

For those who have no idea what this is, O:MFG was a 3 part patch for the MMOFPS Planetside 2 that aimed to make the game perform better all-around. But it took the dev team almost a year and a half to decide to do this and it took months to do, with each patch spanning about a month or two apart. However in the end they achieved their goal and the game performs almost 80% better than before. From what I’ve experienced, GW2 is having a similar issue.

Large fights cause insane lag and FPS issues, and even people that have poured thousands of dollars into their PC’s are getting these issues. If Anet wants to fix these lag issues they have to work on it now, not later. I admire Allie for here recent post asking about lag issues, but people have been complaining about this WAY before even the 1st league started. If Anet wants this game to thrive they need to look at themselves and GW2 in the mirror and say “What can we do to fix the biggest issues in our game”?

The time for content and Pvp patches is at a temporary end. If the ground in which you are putting all this great new content on isn’t stable, then everything will continue to fall. Anet needs and probably sees a solid foundation for all this content, but to us it looks and feels flawed and instable.

If Anet wants their MMO to thrive for years to come, they need to make a second O:MFG happen, but if that doesn’t happen soon, this game will surely die and vanish from peoples radar

Have you been to the Guardian section of the forums? People are rerolling for warrior as we speak, I’m doing it too. I’ve been told it’s actually FUN to play warrior, and since playing guardian has turned into a chore, I’ll be rerolling for a cute little asura warrior. I’ve learned that there’s no reason to play a class that none of the devs understand, or even play as and literally believe “are in a good spot” when the entire community is screaming “NO”. I heard that on one of there latest livestreams, I instantly made my new warrior after that. Been playing this game long enough to learn that nothing good will come by just waitin’ for the devs to fix your class.

Guardian is useful in every aspect of the game…whether it is fractals, or dungeons, or WvW….its just that Warriors are too OP right now that it makes guardians seem bad. They are in no way as bad as Rangers or Ele’s right now though….those two classes and even Mesmer needs far more help than guardian.

compared to warriors they seem lacking, but guardians ARE pretty good in every mode of the game (rather on the OP side of balance, imo). other classes definitely need more attention.

Guards give DPS nearly on par with warriors while bringing reflects rivaled only by mesmers. They have 2 high end, meta builds (look up Obal’s guides for these). Most professions have 1 meta build and some have none (necros).

WvW
Guardians probably are the most popular profession in organized WvW guilds since they are hands down some of the best front-liners available.

sPvP
Guards are still considered a must-have for most teams since they are such strong bunker/team support. They also work well as meditation DPS.

There will always be people who reroll after getting a case of seeing greener on the other side, but the bottom line is that almost no other class in the game is viable in as many areas as guardians are while having as many viable builds as guardians do.

There is one MAJOR flaw with your entire thing…. Playing Guardian isn’t fun.. it’s a CHORE. You MUST use these specific meta builds in order to survive, or you must sacrifice all your survivability (next to none, low hp) to do damage. Meaning you DIE before you can do any of that actual damage, especially when zerging

If playing a Guardian is not fun why bother?
And those things you said also apply to any profession apart from a warrior.

Well when I 1st started playing this game, I thought guard would be fun. I tried to use spirit weapons and other things cause they seemed cool. It was my 1st class, and before I knew it, I wasn’t having any more fun. I’m currently making a warrior since it honestly seems like more fun :/

Short answer: Communal Defenses will not grant aegis to the guardian that is blocking.

The answer is AH, after finding out I’ll have to choose between these two traits, I’m sad to say I will never actually use the new CD.

When this one was announced I was like “Omg that’s pretty awesome for once!”……. “Wait what? I’ll have to choose between AH and THIS?.. AH it is then”

The payoff in large and even medium engagements is much greater for AH than CD. Keep trying Anet, maybe another year down the line you’ll come up with a patch for Guardian that won’t make me facepalm.

I’m upgrading both my motherboard and CPU, and I’m having a bit of trouble with the whole “BIOS” thing. Since I’m going to be removing my old motherboard do I need to search for the BIOS for my new processor? Or will the motherboard find it on its own? Can I just delete the old drivers, replace the CPU and MB pop in the CD that came with it and let it take it’s course???

Guys… I need a bit of help, I love the guardian, I truly do, but my current build only allows me to survive most fights and deal semi-decent damage, least I THINK I’m dealing semi-decent damage. I’m looking to do SOMETHING with the armor set I have on and fiddle around with it and various weapon combinations. If you have that kind of money, just make one. You can make one 10 times more powerful for under $1000 then buying a fully made one for $1000+
If you don’t know how, ask a friend, or ask a local store to assist, or look up some videos on how to do it. Building a PC is like buying the pieces to a puzzle separately, but they all fit nicely into each other. With that kind of money, you could blow an Alienware PC out of the water. For things like that you are buying the brand, not the item itself. I built my PC that runs Gw2 on medium/some high settings for under $500! But that because I was short on cash. Since AMD and Invidia have released shiny new graphics cards, the prices of the “older” ones will go down. making your price EVEN LOWER.

Alright, here’s the deal, I have a full set of Draconic Knights armor, I love it and would like to not have to spend 20+ gold in order to buy a new set or even a few different pieces. My question is what can I do with this set? What should I put in for my traits, I like being at the front of zergs so I usually run triple shouts. My current traits are 10/0/30/30/0 traited for AH and using a hammer or greatsword in the other hand. And shouting to clear most conditions and not get knocked on my kitten . I also found entropy while losing to tequatl, but I’m not sure if it works with my armor. Any opinions?

Devon came up with the league idea, basically guilds in servers that are low tier have begun moving to servers with “more potential” it happened to SBI about 2 months ago, we got a huge amount of people from other servers. Thankfully they like us enough that they are going to stay, but other servers aren’t that luck
