That’s what I run in sPvP all the time. I recommend double dogs or wolf and spider for pets. The idea is to lay down traps while spamming dodges constantly. Don’t stay in one weapon set for too long. Abuse your evades. It’s especially effective in 1v1 and somewhat in 2v1 but beyond that you can survive as long as your evades last.
Beastmaster and regen bunker are also fairly effective builds I’ve seen but don’t have much experience with. Try to avoid running glass cannon longbow/greatsword as those builds tend to lack mobility and survivability for mediocre damage.
That’s all I have for now. best of luck!
Jack of all trades, master of none.
I used a rabid trapper to beat everything but Liadri on my first try. Liadri took a few more but I got her eventually with relative ease. It did annoy me though that our pet gets 1 shot in just about every fight. Watching some of the guardians and mesmers run through it at the same time I was happy to be a ranger
Oh come on a l2p issue? I’ve played several thousand games of sPvP, I’ve completed every dungeon in the game, I have a full set of ascended armor, and I was kicked from a dungeon party the other day just because I was a ranger. Maybe it’s the stigma that bad rangers have created but if you want to run dungeons fast then reroll warrior.
Ranger
Crossfire: Increased casting time by 40 milliseconds. This was done to fix some glitches in the animation that caused problems with this skill.

fortunately i’m not. still haven’t noticed it.
Then you didn’t watch the video. I’m not going to sit here and debate a fact that the shortbow used to be faster.
The video makes it very apparent what the old shortbow used to do. It was changed early on in the game to fix some graphical issue, so if you’re new to the ranger you wouldn’t have noticed.
Yes it seems they did. After the hop you do a little shuffle. However when you’re running from someone and you shoot the evade behind you your character will hop forward but shuffle back towards the enemy. Killed me a couple times when fighting Liadri.
The good old days :P unfortunately a ranger that’s good with a bow doesn’t seem to fit into the druid class they’re trying to turn us into.
I’ll definitely have to try this out. It’s almost identical to my build except I run 6 in Skirmishing and 3 traps instead of Nature Magic. I’ve been goofing around trying to find something that doesn’t use traps and this looks promising!
As far as sPvP goes, longbow rangers are a joke. I’ve used shortbow with sword/dagger and traps since launch and have had a lot of success in 1v1. In solo que I usually take home point just because I can effectively 1v1 most classes and get back to point quick with sword #2 after a mid fight. In fact I would argue rangers shine in 1v1. Every other class has better support, better bunker, and better DPS.
Haha! This has been every ranger’s dream since the beta. It’s garbage that a % of our damage is tied to broken pet AI. In short Anet has no plans to remove the pet. ever. I’ve heard that a pet rework is being considered so look forward to that next year! Maybe. Probably not.
Ranger Notes—
1. Active condition removal for rangers. We rely too much on Empathetic Bond for condition removal to make the new Bark Skin trait worth taking (in my opinion).
2. Sword skill 1 rooting is the most infuriating thing I have ever experienced. Please for the love of all that is good in this world please… remove the rooting. I will love you forever and probably name my first born child JohnPeters. Just saying :P
Overall I love the way this looks. Doesn’t do much for my ranger’s trapper build but I’m happy we’re at least getting some attention after that last patch. Looking forward to December!

It will sure make me feel better! I’ll put half the effort into a new class and get twice the reward.
Step 1: Roll Warrior
Step 2: Roll face back and forth across keyboard
Step 3: Profit!
I’m tired of learning every facet of my class, nailing the timing on every skill knowing when to dodge and how to outwit an enemy yet still getting rolled by some cc warrior on his first day. Ranger isn’t an easy class and I accept that. I enjoy a little challenge but this is ridiculous. I’m sick and tired of being at the bottom of the totem pole and using my own skill to try and climb to the top. I feel like a pianist playing the ranger while every other class is angrily bashing their face against the keyboard and doing just as well.
I would disagree with you Jazenn. I’ve tried to play a ranger, in fact is was my first character, but each and every time I play I’ve never felt so weak. I’m afraid the ranger is bad. Maybe that’s the broken class mechanic, or the lack of viable builds in general but when I run in WvW I get stomped all day. For example, I was running with a friend just causing trouble around the map and we would always get dropped by this 3 man gank squad we kept running into. Finally, fed up with it, I jumped on my guardian who is actually not in max gear yet, and I found those guys again. My guardian was able to tank and down all three of them whereas my maxed gear ranger plus another ranger, could not kill one of them. I’m out of options at this point
I hate to put my ranger away because I love the class but I just feel like no matter what build I run, no matter what tactics I use, no matter how I play, I will always get wrecked by any competent player of any opposing class.
So I think this whole thread stems from the fact that the pet is ineffective and often more of a hazard than a help. The problem is that our pet can get parties wiped in a dungeon and there’s nothing we can do about it. The pet, or our “class mechanic” is broken so we are here seeking a solution. You don’t see thieves or warriors crying about their class mechanic because it works as intended. Our pet does not. People are tired of carrying a broken mechanic by their side, so either fix it or give us an option to remove it.
