An "Outnumbered" Defense Buff

This an ode to the brave souls who stand at a supply camp watching the zerg of 50 enemies inexorably approach.

I propose an “Outnumbered” Buff that occurs when a player as a defender in a “take the tower, keep, supply camp” etc event is outmanned by a significant margin. The boost will give him a significant bonus to toughness and vitality that will make him very hard to kill (but not impossible). No bonuses to attacking powers though. If he wants to kill anyone and get stuff for it, it needs to be on ability.

The goal here is to actually make sentry duty worth something. The purpose of a Sentry is to sound the alarm when the enemy approaches and hold the line for reinforcements. but Zerg strategy pretty much has it that if one or two players are standing sentry at a supply camp, they just get run over and are dead in 2 seconds flat. No point for it then. By the time reinforcements arrive, the camp has been flipped and Righteous Indignation is up, and the help just sits there staring and the Zone Claiming Guard for the next 4 minutes while the zerg runs off and repeats the process somewhere else.

Actually giving survivability to the few people willing to stand guard will not only encourage the practice, but would also allow for more intense combat as the guards being able to defend a zone long enough for the alert to be given (and reacted too) would mean more clashes of Zergs at strategic points.

Or, it would mean instead of Zerging Supply camps, the incentive would be to use smaller groups to target camps and a more strategic application of the mass zerg, as attacking a few sentries with a normal party would not trigger the outnumbered buff.

The only purpose for NPC’s in WvW IMO is to prevent one person from being able to swipe Supply camps and so on.

Could be something more fundamental though. Being tied to the very land itself. The Dragons cannot corrupt the Sylvari unless every inch of Tyria is first corrupted.

I’m sure everyone has noticed that you never encounter undead Sylvari. (If you have not noticed this, you are not really paying attentiong :P) I think this says a few things about the Sylvari as a race. Mainly, they are literally incarnations of life itself. More so then other living things perhaps. If you think about it, in order to make a living thing “Undead” it first has to die. But if Sylvari cannot die in the traditional sense, then it would be impossible for them to be made undead.

I can’t speak for AR, but I know BP was having shenanigans last night too. It is a stretch to say DH is somehow able to sabotage two servers, but they definitely had some help from the troll brigade irregardless.

Definitely got some shenanigans going on tonight. People sitting on siege weapons and not using them, hiring services while keeps are under intense attack and destroying all the supplies. Really strange stuff.

The bodies were certainly piled high in DH’s effort to retake their part of EB. And that is without a waypoint in SM to help send reinforcements north. Definitely shaping up to be a fun week.

Okay, new bug (I think) for the Temple of Balthaazar event chain. Actually, 2 bugs. On the Borlis Pass server, the “Assault Stygian Deeps” event for the central invasion will not start. Ever. We ignored it, and brought the North and South invasions in. Event started, and about 2 minutes into the advance, we went from 100% morale to a sudden event failure. There was no steady drop in morale. One second we were fighting, the next the event was over.

BP’s strength is not in being able to stay awake at all hours, its in the aggressive mindset of the players. This morning, 4 (Yes 4) BP players captured an Anvil Rock keep in their borderlands. We don’t wait for the shiny blue triangle. Saying this guild or that guild is responsible for wins or losses is really disingenuous. No guild can maintain a constant organized presence at all hours. At the end of the day, its up to the random pugs to keep the momentum going, and BP’s players have no qualms about attacking a fully upgraded tower with 1 battering ram.

Cool idea but SM really doesn’t need to give more advantages than it already does to the owner.

Isn’t the point of SM to be advantageous and encourage the worlds to fight for it?

Having done the Arah story a few days ago, I have to say the big highlight of that dungeon was the Airship portions, especially the parts where you use the main guns to blast things. So, I have a suggestion.

An extra upgrade to SM Castle would be “Build an Airship”. It would basically be the twin of the one in the first part of the Arah dungeon and would have a dedicated waypoint accessible to the controlling team. To build the Airship, the building team must have max improvements on SM and use the entire supply store.

The Airship would then travel around WvW on a predetermined path, passing over the outer walls of the various keeps (but not the inner walls) at a relatively slow pace, and maybe stopping occasionally. I envision the trip around the entire WvW area taking about 60 minutes. Players could choose to ride on the Airship, using its main guns to blast people, or utilize it to attack keep upgrades and so on.

The Airship itself cannot be destroyed, but the guns can be damaged and require supplies to repair them. The only way to remove the Airship from the map would be to flip SM.

What I want to know is who would spend money just to join a server that is higher in the WvW rankings. Its not like every server but the top three are terrible at WvW.

It will be interesting to see how NSP tries a breakout in EB. With overlook fully upgraded and NP still in command of SM despite a push by AR earlier this morning, it’s going to be a tough nut to crack. Especially without access to any meaningful quantity of supplies. I remember last night NSP tried to build some Siege Golems at a recaptured supply point. They had not even finished the third before they were discovered and rolled on. Fact is, you can’t build a golem rush with just the 100 supplies at a recaptured dump. And trebuchets that can hit the walls or gates of the keep require a ton of supply too and would be largely in range of mortars on the walls as well as counterfire trebs. Going to have to take some real planning to get that back. Or you could pay AR to try and take it. They would probably have a better shot.

NSP being unable to hold that keep is simply amazing to me.

Nothing much amazing to it, BP just strolls in while we’re all asleep and then they sit on it all NA day since we don’t have the numbers to take it back.

We tried to stage a Break Out this morning to take back the towers(and eventually the keep)… unfortunately after it triggered 3 of our ppl left and we got obliterated by a dozen BP players.

Believe it or not, we sleep too :P Like I said, it does not take many people to defend that keep. Its even easier to defend then lowlands since you can see all the way in several directions.

I really don’t get NSP’s claim that it can’t succeed on the map. BP has been controlling NSP’s keep in the Eternal Battlegrounds for last day or so, and I have to say its an amazing asset to whoever owns it. It is quite literally “the commanding heights”, and fully upgraded its almost impossible to capture it or any of the surrounding towers if the controlling server has at least 3 people in it (1 for a mortar, 2 for the Cannons or built siege weapons). NSP being unable to hold that keep is simply amazing to me.
