At the time, no reason was given, and there was never any announcement made. I guess we know now why it was done – it’s very likely that they knew three months ago that these feature patch changes were coming, and they wanted to limit the number of people who would be negatively impacted.

It would have been far better if they had stated that this was about to happen. I know several individuals, including myself, that purchased some of those items just as they were about to disappear, thinking they were just clearing the gem store out for new items.

Thanks for the answer.

All of this makes no sense to me I mean, I assume they’re no sadists and that they do want to make money off the store. The perfect, obvious thing to do here would be to keep on selling all town clothes they ever implemented and have them be included in the wardrobe and transmutation system. This would a) make everyone happy and b) get them more revenue. I for example would buy up all the cherry blossom etc shirts, plus the cargo shorts and reading glasses, if they were account wide, I wouldn’t even need to be able to transmute them for combat, just having them as account-wide, dyable, mixable town clothes would work fine for me.

I would really like to know why they’re preferring to go the current route, and whether there’s a chance they might revert their decision.

Right, they are talking about the items on the town clothes list that were removed on December 17th. This includes:

Casual Hoodie
Cherry Blossom Shirt
Country Lace Gathered Shirt
Designer Hoodie
Dragon Emblem Shirt
Fitted Casual Shirt
Layered Vest
Leather Hoodie
Ornate Ruched Shirt
Silk Brocade Vest with Shirt
Striped Silk Vest with Shirt
Khaki Cargo Shorts
Riding Pants
Riding Boots
Riding Gloves

The last three items still exist as part of a costume set, but their individually sold versions were removed from the gem store.

I totally missed this, wasn’t playing actively at the time. I wanted to buy some of those :O
Why were they removed?

I would vote that town clothes be added to the wardrobe pool as separate skins. They are already individualized items now. A lot of people enjoy mixing and matching town clothes and also would like to wear town clothes in combat. Without knowing the technical hurdles involved, I believe that keeping them as individualized items is the best compromise to satisfy the largest quantity of players.

As someone who has paid real money for some of the town clothes, I am disappointed at this change and reduction of enjoyment in my financial investment. To me, this is poor business practice and makes me hesitant of investing financially going forward.

I have to second this. 100%

When did the cherry blossom shirts stop being available in the shop anyhow? I wanted to buy some eventually but didn’t get around to it.

… not that I would buy them if they were tonics, but you know. If they remained functional, dyable townclothes, I’d like the option to be able to buy them again.

Really, because WOW implemented this feature almost two years ago, for free thru a subscription. This system should have been in place since day one.

Yeah, but WoW does have a subscription. GW2 doesn’t. Do you really expect GW2 to offer the same thing that WoW offers for 13€ a month, for free? They do have to make money somehow. I wasn’t fine with the previous system because it was user-unfriendly and destructive, and I refused to spend money on that, but now I gladly will.

This sound all good and nice but we need clarification on a couple of things

1. How are we gonna aquire charges ? Not all of us are super rich
2. How many charges to do a complete set on a caracter ?
3. Are we at least gonna start off with a set of charges to test out this system ?

1. How did you transmute items until now? With crystals. You’re gonna aquire the charges just like you aquired the crystals before.

2. Just like before, you need one charge / crystal to change one piece of armor. So, 6 for a complete set of armor, plus additional ones if you want to change the backpiece or weapon(s).

3. If you have trans crystals, they’ll be converted to charges 1:1. If you have trans stones, they’ll be converted to charges 3:1.

Besides the other obvious problems that were already mentioned, tonics are also doing nothing about the current alt-unfriendliness of town clothes.

When I read the changes, at first I thought “Yay, now I can finally buy town clothes because they’ll be unlocked on all my characters!” Seems like that’s not an option with tonics … so I won’t be buying any town clothes.

Why? This isn’t the real world where the wealthy can use their assets to deny you access to basic needs (governments exist to protect the assets of the minority wealthy from the majority poor and the majority poor from financial harm from the minority wealthy). No amount of wealth in this game can be used to impact another player.

Of course it can. Anything you may want to buy off the TP is influenced by it. If I want to buy crafting mats or armor, or a rare tonic or transmute item that has such a low drop chance that farming for it is pointless, I have to go to the TP and pay inflated prices. Just imagine if I wanted to buy new dyes today …

Who is making all this profit?

Anyone who is buying today is going to LOSE money on patch day.

The couple of people who snatched up thousands of blue dyes at 30 copper and resell them for 25 silver now, and who snatched up thousands of green dyes at a couple of silver, selling them for 80 silver now, and the people who snatched up rare dyes for 30 silver selling them for 5 gold now. Those are becoming millionaires at the expense of everyone else. I can’t blame them, but I blame the system that enables it.

They don’t want to cause unnecessary damage to the dye market. If they suddenly inserted 100,000 Abyss dyes, the price of the Abyss dye would plummet.

How would that be bad compared to what’s going on now? The “worst” thing that would happen is that cheap Abyss for a while would make it possible for poorer players to buy one, I’d see that as a good thing if anything. What’s going on now is simply a few people making a ridiculous profit on the back of everyone else. Which is a million times worse than the price of some dyes going down for a while …

I agree. I think leveling should feel rewarding on all levels. Getting a trait point every time you ding just feels enjoyable and rewarding, because it lets you know that your character is progressing, you’re getting one point closer to that next cool trait, etc.

Leveling to 30 is going to feel pretty grindy now, not to mention that it’s pretty boring to play up till level 50 or so without having cool traits to enhance your gameplay.

2- at the end of the day, you don’t have the freedom to swap looks like you do on PvP. you’re still better off picking a single look for a set and sticking with it, rather than a “what do i feel like wearing today?”. this was what disappointed me the most in the system, as i was hoping it would give me more freedom to look how i want at any given time, but it’s largely the same system we already have.

True, but that’s the price you pay (literally!) for a game with no subscription fee. I’m fine with this, arena.net needs to make money somehow, since I want GW2 to keep on going and growing. And in terms of making money, this seems like a great, user-friendly, non-pay-to-win way to do it.

5- and what of gem store skins? i would assume the first time you apply it for free, or you get 6 charges with it (one per piece). some clarification in that regard would be nice.

I would assume (and hope) that they’d come with 6 charges.

New players will not have the dyes we longer-playing people do. It will cost them exponentially more to build a dye collection and crafting dyes is not really very easy due to the large amounts of mats involved.

Yeah, that is indeed a fair concern. There should probably be a new, easier way to aquire account bound dyes, maybe from kharma.

Gotta agree with this fine gentleman. I’m happy for the system, it makes a HUGE difference, but having to spend Transmutation Stones EVERYTIME you want to change appareance? Wow, not cool.

How is this any different from the current system?

But since this needs transmutation charges its just another money grab.

You need transmute crystals currently, nothing changes in this regard. Except it doesn’t destroy your armor any more, so it’s vastly improved.

The thing this does not do is address the problem of gear churn for leveling characters. By putting the cost on the back end, when you transmute, rather than when you unlock, there is still a disincentive to maintain you look when your level 47 Guardian (or whatever) gets a new drop—because they may get a better drop in 15 minutes, and do you want to pay another transmute charge then too? My guard has been hauling around a set she picked up with karma for 20 levels now, because my gear set is never stable enough to justify using t-stones when I know she’ll be getting a new something any time now. It would be nice if there was a price break of some kind for lowbie characters, to get them into using the system early on.

Yes, a “transmute discount” for leveling characters would be amazing. It’s nice looking the way you want to while leveling.

What are they going to introduce next, player housing?

YES, PLEASE!!!

I’d really like to see some stats on gold distribution among players. I think the disparity is completely crazy, a few people hoard thousands of gold while most players are below 100g in total. It feels like a gold equalization should probably happen at some point.

I don’t understand people who complain about this. It’s the same price as it’s always been, except it’s much more useful now because you don’t destroy your previous set of armor in the process.

I really hope they stay in the game, so there’s still an incentive to do map completion going forward.

Also I don’t think the new system is overpowered. It’s really cool that we can also use trans stones on lvl 80 now, but on the other hand, keep in mind that for leveling characters it’s more pricey to transmute now. Which balances it out.

If the trans stones were removed from map completion, then I’d hope they’d be replaced by another good incentive. An unidentified dye, for example or more gold, which would be a nice way to let casual players who don’t do champion farms or flip the AH, earn some gold.

These changes make me so happy. Thank you :)

Oh, I didn’t even think of how MUCH more valuable these changes make gem store armor. Again, I’ve never bought gem store armor before, because I didn’t want to pay a big amount of gems to get an outfit on one character, and which I’d have to destroy another outfit for in order to even be able to use it.

Now I’ll be able to buy gem store armor and use it on any character I want (with the right armor class), and it won’t destroy anything! I’ll be able to use it as often as I like sooooooooooooooooo amazing. I hope this will increase the revenue of gem store armor a lot, and will lead to them implementing many more armors in the store.

These changes make me so happy. Thank you :)

I just read the wardrobe and dye blogs and I’m completely overwhelmed with happy emotions right now so much that I felt like making a thread to express my gratitude to the developers for making such amazing changes.

The one thing that bugged me the most in this game, from beta on, was the transmutation system. I’m a collector, and I’m an indecisive person. I just hated the idea of destroying one outfit to get the looks of another. I couldn’t do it. To this day, I think I’ve used a total of 3 transmutation crystals — and this is despite the fact that I love putting together outfits. But the previous implementation of the transmute system felt really destructive and clunky to me, so much that I just didn’t use it.

Which made me drift away from the game. I haven’t played much in the past months, because to me character customization is one of the driving factors why I play a game (along with experiencing the content itself, of course). I couldn’t get excited about aquiring new armor or weapons, I couldn’t be bothered to farm for specific items (e.g. in dungeons), because what’s the point when you can’t use them? What’s the point when you have to destroy one item you like in order to wear another item you like?

This new system offers everything I hoped for.

- I can now finally make use of the transmute system without destroying anything. I will be buying plenty of transmutation crystals in the future, because now the system is user friendly and makes me WANT to use it.

- I can preview all armor without having to run to the mists do it. I can preview even more armor than there even is in the mist wardrobe!

- I can collect an item on one character and use it on all my other characters! This makes me so, so happy because I have 8 active characters (most of them level 80) and a bunch of little ones, and even more that I’m planning on. Extremely alt-friendly change

- Town clothes are included, too! This is so cool. I’ve barely bought town clothes in the store before, because it felt a bit pointless with 8 characters and only having town clothes on one of them. Now I’ll buy ALL THE QUAGGAN HATS

- Converting transmutation stones to 3 charges: this one is the one that surprised me most, because in this day and age I honestly didn’t expect such user-friendliness and fairness from a gaming company anymore. But you showed me that it’s possible! I’m sure that most other companies would have used this opportunity to make us buy as many crystals as possible, but you actually thought of those who have many transmutation stones lying around. Plus this gives an added incentive to do map completion, which is truly great! I’ll still buy plents of crystals because of this awesome change. I thank you guys for being awesome.

- The dye changes. Account bound dyes! I’ll keep it short and just say that this is great. I’ll probably miss the excitement of having an unidentified dye drop occasionally (seriously, that icon is a blue-yellow-pink bundle of JOY), but that’s one tiny downside in an overall great package. I’m curious to see what new ways there will be to aquire unidentified dyes.
And again, thank you for making this feature super alt-friendly and letting us keep the dyes we’ve already unlocked, plus giving us unidentified dyes for the duplicats. The kindness is greatly appreciated.

Oh, is there a possibility to include hair accessories in the dye system? I would love to be able to change my asura’s hair bow to match the colors of her outfit. This would be great for color coordination and is one thing that could make this amazing system even better, to me anyways.

So, that’s pretty much it. Just wanted to express my gratitude for these great changes.

Everything has a place in the eternal alchemy.
Many thanks,
Awbee

Leveling up a new char in GW2 isn’t all that fun alone already, I had friends who couldn’t get into it. But I guess being a veteran player I don’t really care about that.

So your opinion is: leveling is bad already, so let’s make it worse?

No. Leveling is the main thing I do in the game. I have 25 characters planned out that I’d like to level at some point (haven’t bought all those slots yet, don’t worry ^^ ). Making leveling less interesting, less enjoyable and less rewarding is not the way to go.

So what if the game gets a little tougher while leveling up? The game is mind-numbingly EASY.

(and yes, downscaling needs to be quite a bit more savagely applied than it is now)

It’s not about tougher, it’s about boring. Getting an option to look at your traits and make a decision and spending a point every time you level, that’s interesting. Not having anything to do with traits until level 30, that’s boring.

Having access to new skills early on, that diversifies your playstyle — interesting. Playing exactly the same way as every other thief / mesmer / … until level 30? Boring.

The question is, how many of the new players actually use traits before 30?

The game really isn’t that old, I remember being in beta as if it was just last week ago, and I got along very fine with traits, as did all of my friends. I really can’t imagine many new players looking at traits and not understanding it at all.

Dev Blog: Changes to Traits

Awbee.8405

You can’t miss what you never had, and there is soooo much more to guild wars 2 than traits. Sure experienced people like yourself might miss it, but you also have birthday scrolls & know all the tricks for hitting 80 super fast.

I honestly don’t see how it would drive away new people. Traits will continue to be what they were when I was leveling my first character: an incentive to hit max level.

I have to admit I agree that the push from 40/60 to 60/80 is too much, but I don’t think it’s the end of the world/massive drawback that people in this thread are making it out to be. It’s unfortunate, but mostly irrelevant.

But why mess something up that was working fine? I really don’t see how starting traits at 30, and only getting to “do” something with traits every 6 levels is in any way an improvement to the current system. I was a new player 1,5 years ago, and I never had any trouble at all understanding the trait system. And one of the things I loved right from the start was that symbol that popped up when I levelled, letting me know that I could reap my reward and spend a trait point.

Dev Blog: Changes to Traits

Awbee.8405

Seriously… you’re that concerned about traits while leveling up or traits being locked? How many of you in this thread have not made it to level 80 yet? How many of you haven’t created a character yet? You’re making a mountain out of a molehill. Leveling is easier than it has ever been. You can level up to 80 just by doing world completion and never even make it past the level 25 zones. Hell, you can skip straight from level 1 to 20 and feed easily obtainable skill point scrolls into your character to have all the utilities unlocked and ready to go. There are readily avilable tomes. Crafting still rewards a considerable amount of experience for cheap.

Leveling happens to be the main thing I do and enjoy when playing GW2. I have 8 characters and 2 free character slots, and I plan(ned) on leveling a LOT more. I love the feeling of leveling up and seeing the reward in form of a trait point I can spend, and seeing that I get closer to that cool next trait.

No access to traits until level 30 and only every 6 levels is going to reduce my enjoyment of leveling drastically. I know, because WoW did the exact same thing. You used to be able to spend a talent point each time you levelled in WoW, now you get to choose a talent every 15 levels. Pretty much ruined leveling in WoW for me, which is why I was sooooo glad about GW2’s system up until now.

I’m certainly keen on the free re-traiting and new traits etc, but the leveling aspect ruins it all for me tbh

I hope arena.net reconsiders this.

Male Asuras or Female ones?

in Asura

Posted by: Awbee.8405

Awbee.8405

^ Ryuujin: cuuuute <3

I prefer female Asura, partly because I’m female myself and just prefer playing female chars in general, but also because to me, they’re cuter

And I really love the voice acting. I’m glad they didn’t choose an extremely baby-like high pitched voice, but a cute-but-also-mature-and-sophisticated sounding one. Though I guess my ultimate dream would have been to be able to choose between 3 voices for each character, ranging from high and young-sounding to low and mature sounding. But I’m not gonna complain about not having this, the amount of voice acting would have been INSANE ^^

About your choice: I actually have a female Asura Ele, and she says adorable things when she changes attunements. You’re gonna hear those shouts a lot when you play an ele ^^ so here’s the things that female, and then male, Asura Eles shout when they switch attunements. Maybe it helps in your decision. (Maybe when reading the words, you’ll remember how it sounds from hearing it in the game from another ele.)

Female:

Fire:
“Observe the power of fire!”
“Spark to flame!”

Water:
“The water’s rage!”
“Wave and torrent!”

Air:
“Let the storms rage!”
“I summon the winds!”

Earth:
“I command stone and soil!”
“The earth is my weapon!”

Male:

Fire:
“I have ignition!”
“Turn up the heat!”

Water:
“Cleansing will now begin!”
“Turn the tide!”

Air:
“Severe weather warning!”
“Now they’ll feel my turbulence!”

Earth:
“Rocks and stones will break your bones!”
“Geological forces at my command!”

I find the male ones to be more snarky and funny, but I prefer the way the female ones sound.

Also, there’s of course the other sound tidbids that have nothing to do with attunement. Here’s a mix of some that I remember and that I found online, for each gender.

Female:
“What a fascinating discovery!” (Discovering)
“Oh, I can’t wait to explore this place!” (Discovering)
“Statistically speaking, this is rather rare.” (Rare loot)
“It’s not showing off if you earned it.” (Achievement)
“Oh yes. I earned this.” (Achievement)
“Another testament of my greatness!” (Leveling / Ach)
“Can I get any better? … Indeed, I can!” (Leveling)
“More knowledge for me!” (Learning a skill)
“I can’t wait to try this out!” (Learning a skill)
“May all your theories be sound.” (When leaving an NPC)

There’s the power.” (Might)
“Getting healthy.” (Regen)
“Go ahead, hit me!” (Retaliation)
“Combine and compound!” (Combo field)
“Synergy is beautiful!” (Combo field)
“How doess that feel? Excruciating?” (Doing damage)
“‘I majored in pain, with a minor in suffering!” (sooo eeeevil >:3 )

“Burning … burning … burning!!” (Burning ^^ )
“I’m weakened? Preposterous!” (Weakness)
“Going hypothermic!” (Chilled)
“My mobility is impaired!” (Crippled)
“My defenses are down!” (Vulnerability)
“… where am I?” (Confusion)
“I need an antidote!” (Poison)
“That’s … my blood …” (Bleeding)
“Help me, I’m hurt!” ( sounds really helpless and cute)
“Structural integrity … compromised …” (when nearly dead)
“I don’t think well on the ground.” (After being rezzed)

Male:

“I’ve already beaten you, you just don’t know it yet!” (Entering combat)
-Some other combat line I can’t remember now for some reason-
“Why won’t anyone… help me?” (Low health/downed)
“Help… I don’t have long…” (Low health/downed)
“I was getting tired of laying around!” (Revived)
“It’s about time!” (Revived)

Boons/conditions:
“Accelerate!” (Swiftness)
“The thrill of speed!” (Swiftness) …I’m not sure about this line. Quickness?
“Initiating feedback loop!” (Retaliation)
“I feel six feet tall!” (Might?)
“Infuriating!” (Fury?)
“Body heat..diminishing.” (Chilled)
“I’m hemorrhaging!” (Bleed)
“High toxicity!” (Poisoned)
“I feel exposed!” (Vulnerability)

Updating AC was a terrible decision, imo — at least in the way they did it. I used to run AC a lot and enjoyed it immensely, now I just don’t do it anymore, at all. Nobody else seems to do it anymore either, at least not in my guild, and only very few people on gw2lfg.

It was one out of two dungeons that people actually ran often and enjoyed. Now only one is left, CoF 1, and that one is far more “imbalanced”. Why, arenanet?

Those were designed with the word “permanence” in mind, SAB wasnt and if they wanted to make it permanent they would have to redesign a proper reward system, which I dont think they will soon. If anything and Arenanet agrees to make it permanent, they will take it off after the 30 days and bring it back again in a few months when they have more weapon skins ready, more zones and a redesigned reward system.

Apart from the fact that Fractals have zero rewards for alts and thus I as someone without a “main” but a ton of alts have zero incentive to play Fractals … what’s the permanent reward system of Keg Brawling? What’s the permanent reward system of any Jumping Puzzle? Why have them in the game?

Why leave Fractals in the game, but not SAB?
Why leave dungeons in the game, but not SAB?
Why leave CoF farming in the game, but not SAB?

I don’t enjoy fractals, don’t really enjoy dungeons, don’t enjoy CoF especially. I enjoy SAB. Why can’t I keep the things I like ingame? I usually do nothing but level alts in this game, SAB gives me something different to do. I assume this is the same for many other people.

The whole RNG thing makes me really, really distrustful and wary about arena.net, which is sad, because I’d love to support them more fully, but with tactics like this, it’s really hard to do. They know that people will go and spend their money without getting anything in return. Anyone who does this to their customers is really cold, sorry to say :/

It also does nothing to add to the “value” or “prestige” of these items. When I see someone with one of these weapon skins, I don’t think “oh my, what a skilled and successful player!”, I think “how sad, they fell for the scammy technique and accidentally got lucky. Thanks for contributing to a bad system.”

For the record, I’m not interested in these new weapon skins in particular, but I was super duper interested in the Quaggan baby pet on Christmas. Ever since the betas, I’ve wanted nothing more than a Quaggan mini pet, and I was devastated to see that the only option to get one was a gamble. That seemed really heartless. From then on, whenever I see a Quaggan, I feel a bit sad. :/

edit: to expand on what I just said, I’m a player who’s not at all interested in obtaining a legendary weapon, for example. However, I’d spend a terrible amount of ingame time and effort if I could obtain a Quaggan pet that way. For other players, they might do it for a Skritt pet or any other fun or cute items. I’d also easily pay 10$ for it in the gem store. But gambling? No, never. :/

Rox, the Charr

Awww, I really like Rox. I thought her and the pet devourer were absolutely positively adorable I’d love to see more of the two of them. I think it’s great to introduce more “exceptional” characters of each races.

For example, Efut is an Asura but also in a high rank in the Vigil — some people might also scream “omg that’s against the lore”, but that’s not true. Exceptions like that only make the game seem realistic. Not everyone’s the same. Not every Asura is obsessed with brainpower, and not every Charr is super rough and tough. Rox is an adorable young charr (and still pretty tough, btw!) and I wish I could use her face or at least her hair options for my own charr seriously, her hair is awesome!
