Some maths for errbody:
For a new player to get from 1->80 with the new numbers:
Fastest: 729 team arena wins with full time rewards.
Slowest: 5467 custom arena losses with full time rewards.

…so players like marvin with 4.1k tQ wins and 2.1k tQ losses will have been able to make roughly… 7 Dragon ranks 1-80 from tQ alone? This is not counting his solo Q or hotjoin or custom arena or user-hosted tournaments.

Oh, but since he is 71 he gets… 9 reward chests for being bumped up to 80?

I am genuinely curious, Evan. Do you TRULY support this new system that’s being implemented? I honestly want to know if our pvp devs ACTUALLY support this.

I honestly think it would be tragic if this is the consensus among the devs. I really want someone to come forward and say “Hey, this is kitten and we know it but the higher ups are forcing us to make pvp more pve-friendly. I genuinely apologize.”

I seriously want a genuine apology more than dragon rank. You can hold me to that. Reset my rank to 0 and give me an apology if there’s a genuine one to be given.

I mean if you truly support this system you’re implementing and how you’re basically reducing everyone’s rank to 55 and calling it dragon, then by all means stand by it.

I just can’t believe our pvp team would do this to it’s most loyal players.

From what I understood is that if a player has more rank points than it takes to get to 80, all those points go towards additional “levels”. Meaning that he’ll get the reward for 80 + rewards for each level over 80 that he has already earned.

Regardless of whether you like the changes or not, none of them are a good reason to leave the game.

None of them are significant enough.

The only valid reason anyone has for leaving is that there aren’t enough changes, not that there are too many.

I may have missed it in the post, but will we still have separate looks in PvP from PvE even though we share a wardrobe?

Example: I wear full medium Ascalonian armor in PvE, but like to wear Aetherblade armor in PvP. Can I still do that without having to transmute every time I go into heart of the mists?

Again, ANet built up too much hype...

snip

Honestly, I’m not even effected much by the change since I rarely wear my town clothes, but this explanation just doesn’t cut it. I just don’t get it at all. The worst part, by far, are the changes to costumes being a single set.

If any of the town clothes I bought become tonics, you can bet I will be contact support for the refund.

I try to be really supportive of the game. I know it’s really hard to make your vision come together, but even with your explanation, I’m still shocked by the decision to remove features.

If you truly believe there is an issue with weight classes and town clothes, then you shouldn’t be allowing costumes in combat, unless you plan on adding a light, medium, and heavy version of each costume.

I’m pretty sure they mentioned unifying rewards across sPvP and PvE. That’s why they stopped giving out glory. That’s why I asked this question. The sPvP skin locker is now an “archaic” model compared to the PvE skin wardrobe. I don’t imagine it sticking around. Especially since some people have bought gem store skins and converted them to sPvP skins.

I’d love an official response, or at least some citation.

If you don’t think the progression system in the most popular pvp game in the word is an important part of the discussion then you really are ignorant.

Wow. This is probably one of the worst arguments I’ve seen in a while. Popular games do not have to dictate the mechanics of all other games within the same genre. If you believe this then you have a really closed mind and worse yet, a mind that lacks any creativity and imagination.

Basically your argument boils down to this, "LOL is the most popular game in the world and it has grind, therefore it’s the grind that makes it popular! Also, LOL has the letters “LOL” in it, therefore it’s those letters that makes it popular! All games should have those letters!".

I’m saying it’s a point for discussion. You don’t have to agree with me on whether or not Anet should be looking at other games or not, but I was simply stating that ignoring other games is ignorant. Which it is. Even the dev stated that they looked at how other games reward players.

I agree with this. But, out of all the things ANet chose to copy, they chose unnecessary Unlocks. They don’t need to copy everything, otherwise why not copy Vertical progression too?

That’s a slippery slope fallacy.

Honestly, I’d be all for every aspect of the game having an in-game “survey” option at the end of the experience like most games do it beta. It would probably give much more accurate data than anecdotes and forum whining.

The PvP in this game was marketed around skill based play, not grind based. Equal footing for everyone from the getgo. Skill and trait unlocks is directly opposite this idea. No one is complaining because things aren’t being handed to them, they’re complaining because the focus of the game was supposed to be Skill, not skill as long as you have grinded out the necessary abilities/traits beforehand.

So League of Legends is a “grind based”?

Even if it is, it’s the most popular PvP game in the world. People obviously like having progression like this. You might now. A small, vocal portion of the community might not, but people having been asking for this, and it is already proven to be successful in other games.

Just because people are now complaining, doesn’t mean there weren’t twice as many or more complaining that sPvP didn’t have a horizontal progression system.

You know, I don’t recall mentioning LoL. Or playing it. Or being on their boards. We’re talking about GW2, what they marketed the game as, and what they’re now doing. If you can’t make a point that relates to that, you don’t really have a point to make in this discussion.

BeardRex.6739

It wasn’t flooded by unique poster Proposals though. It was flooded by the same exact people adding 10-20 proposals all saying the same basic things while accomplishing NOTHING as far as naming an actual direction/theme that the ranger needed to go in.

Every little proposal was based off some personal grudge or brainfart each person has in one little specific part of the game they do the most of … which if they’re STILL actually playing ranger, is either Conquest, pointless WvW regen Roaming, or soloing Long-Bear like a bot but with slower reaction time and only slightly better environmental awareness. There might have 2 or 3 other people who ran Fractals too but that’s also a niche.

I never even got a chance to make a single formal proposal myself because of it.
If the Devs are real professionals about this, they’ll start a second round of this instead and just narrow the entire discussion down to the things they were already planning to do themselves anyway and just focus the entire discussion around that instead. And again, some flood control would be nice so that the forum-illuminatti (who post more than they actually play games) don’t bogart the entire thing.

^this. I made 2 posts in that thread saying something similar. The suggestions were all so near-sighted. The ranger needs direction, not just buffs.

I think the list is rather short-sighted. Instead of fixing how the game works, most suggestions are “work-arounds”.

A good example of a work-around is the pet attack range buff to stop the “stop-and-go” combat. Ranger pets are so messed up because they act as NPCs, not players. It would require much more work than tweaking numbers, but what I would really like to see is pets behaving (mechanically, not AI) like players. Pets should be able to attack while moving. I know animations would have to be made for all the pets, but that’s just what needs to be done in my mind.

Pets need an option for “dodge when I dodge”, which would require additional animation work too.

Along with those two things, I really like the player ideas that pets should share consumables and share boons ( even if sharing boons is a beast mastery trait). Imagine a trait that’s something like “Every 5-10 seconds, one of your boons is copied to your pet”.

I just don’t think pets will ever be where I want them to be unless the changes made to them change their mechanics, and not just number changes.

Don’t be defensive. SAB is great, but it just needs some adjustments. Less comabt, shorter zones. I’d like to respond specifically to each of your responses and maybe explain why people are making these complaints

1. The zones are too long

You are complaining about too much content.
_No, they are complaining about the inability to stop and come back later without having to complete the first half of the level over again. Zone 2 is undeniable too long. There is no rule that you have to have only 3 zones per World. Break it up more. _

2. Jumping on a flower can throw you into another flower and kill you

You can be more careful about the direction you are facing when you land on them.
Dashing is buggy. We saw this in Zephyr Sanctum update.

3. Crocodile hit boxes are too little

You need to use tactical stratagy to find the spots to hit the from, just like old platform games.
I didn’t experience this problem but I was playing an asuran, so my hitbox is bigger than my model, but there is plenty of buggy terrain, so I wouldn’t doubt peoples complaints. It isn’t “just like old games”. It’s wonky. It’s unintuitive. I grew up the old games. It’s nothing like that. Player character models use the same or similar hitboxes, but are of many different shapes and sizes. This is not a problem old games had.

4. Too many enemies on all maps

Learning where enemies are and how to thwart them is part of the process of progressing in old platform games.
_But in old platform games, you had accurate abilities and mechanics. Don’t keep saying the buggy unintuitive things are like “old games”. _

5. World 2 spike traps are not fair, especially when you get to places where there are lots of cheap ones.

They are all visible. The darts shoot out of dart boxes. The assassin training grounds are meant to teach you to carefully observe your surroundings.
I agree with this. The dart traps are visible enough. However, by the time people get to this point they are frustrated, but can’t pause and return later. The level is too long and that is why people get frustrated at every little thing in this level.

6. World 2 does not have nearly enough checkpoints and repeating the gong run is painful

The gong run is painful. I’d like to tap that difficulty spike down.
I think people are just exhausted by the time they get to that point. Has anyone ever told you that that level is too long?

OVERALL, I’d like to say that the levels are long and, compared to W1, you are obviously designed to die a lot if you mess up. I guess to make you a) farm for continue coins or b) buy an infinite coin. W1 was definitely built with a different philosophy behind it. I find both worlds to be fun, but world 2 just feels less rewarding. There are hardly any baubles along the normal path, and exploration is too trechorous, because when you mess up you die, instead of just having to retry the jumps. I expect anyone not going for the wizard or toad weapons will simply be farming W1.

Why does everyone feel entitled to legendaries? So many people were so excited that legendary weapons were actually going to be… LEGENDARY in this game. They shouldn’t be the norm, the standard, or required. I’m not saying you’re completely wrong for disliking the mystic forge, but I see so many people who make half-hearted attempts to work towards it, and then ragequit because it’s not easy or cheap (or ‘fair’)

I’m sorry but i can’t see what’s legendary in buying gold with daddy’s creditcard (or farm hundreds of hours) throwing lots of expansive stuffs in a toilet hoping a shining valuable poop will pop out of it.

When you see a legendary weapon, you should think “WOW, he’s done that, he’s been there ! grats mate !”
Legendaries should be obtained after a long, epic, diversified journey. Not mostly from a fancy toilet :p

I don’t disagree with you (and you’d know that I’m not supporting the MF if you read more carefully), but what’s more important than “WOW, he’s done that!” is the fact that it’s rare. And that’s what I meant. it’s “of legend”. Meaning you’re lucky if you’ve even seen one on the battlefield, and not just in youtube videos.

You speak of guildwars 1 for not having this system and for you that may have been perfect, But if guildwars 1 is so perfect, Why the creation of GW2?

If content is released and you don’t want to do it, that’s fine.

Gear/stat progression is a required part of any game it is a part of. So yes… if you’re asking for that, then you are forcing other players to play the way they don’t want.

I hit 80 over a week ago, and I’m having more fun now than I was before. The people who get to 80 and get bored are simply looking for another grindfest experience like so many other MMOs.

+1. I hate just commenting to say I agree, but you have to do something show that not everyone is having a terrible time. I feel like you could look at the forums and say "hmm it seems like the majority of people are bored.

Well, I’m not. I haven’t racked up 300+ hours like a lot of the “bored” people here, but I don’t see myself getting bored any time soon. If you’re bored because there’s no power progression, then there are other games for you.

It amazes me how many people play MMOs just to chase the carrot. I play GW2 because I find the combat very enjoyable. In both PvE and PvP. Some people just want to grind and work and want time=power. That’s fine. There are tons of games out there that allow for that.

People who are complaining about endgame are either A) Burnt out, or B) Just don’t enjoy the game enough to play without gear progression. That seems to be the biggest complaint I hear. “There’s no way to make my character stats better.” Well, I don’t know what to tell you. It’s just not that kind of game. You play to challenge your skills in PvE and PvP, and to just have fun.

Then there’s the “zerg” complaint. If you don’t like to zerg, go make friends and do something together… away from the zerg.
