Possessed Statue...

It was one of the better bosses, particularly as a revisit to one of the very first bosses you encounter.

Really though, there’s not a whole lot to keep track of so it’s not particularly challenging – DPS the boss or kill adds, clear or avoid fear fields and spectral flames, and kill menders when they get too close.
You hardly even take damage unless you get hit by spectral flames, and they’re trivially easy to avoid or dispose of. On a mesmer you can outrun them, send a clone after them, or just walk up to them and hit sword 2 / F4 while they explode doing zero damage. Or you can dodge.

The most challenging bit is never getting knocked down, but that’s optional and still isn’t that hard.

I can see why we aren’t getting single-player instance bosses that require you to pay attention to too many things at a time though. It’s not something everyone wants to (or can) deal with in a story mission.

Now… if someone can actually get as far as the Liadri fight in the gauntlet, then somehow take 25 minutes to finish this? There’s only one reasonable explanation I can think of – undergearing. Fighting naked, perhaps. Using level 10 weapons. Traits are all empty. Trying to do this as a candy corn elemental.
Otherwise, I struggle to see how anyone’s going to make it all the way to Liadri with no DPS (and I mean none – my healer guardian killed the statue in less than 10 minutes) or situational awareness.

[Spoilers] The Dragon’s Reach: Part 2

If the Pale Tree turned on us that way it’d be a stroke of genius. But it’s not going to happen unfortunately – from her anthem used to promote GW2, to her role in bringing about the downfall of Zhaitan, there’s no way ANet would be willing to throw that all away in that plot twist.

Mordy's General is not the Pale Tree!!!

Ben K.6238

There’s another Pale Tree out there. But rather than Ventari’s tablet, it has Mordremoth. It’s sending Malyck to say hello.

(And hopefully the Pale Tree sends the Iron Legion to say hello back with hundreds of flamethrowers. Can’t wait for that boss fight.)

Hello? Orders?

Ben K.6238

ANet could consider giving us daily / weekly missions from our order. I recall something along those lines from factions like the Dark Brotherhood in Oblivion (and I think Skyrim as well).

Doesn’t matter that they’d be minor errands and repeating from a limited list, at least you’d feel like you were doing something.

For that matter, I’d like to see something along those lines outside the orders as well. It’s like Tribune Desertgrave has forgotten I exist.

Are we going to see him again? Almost certainly.

But it’s probably not going to be pretty. The Pale Tree has confirmed, at least to sylvari PCs, that she’s shielding them from Mordremoth’s influence. Those closer to Mordremoth… well, chances are their whole tree would become a lieutenant of the dragon.

2. In The Dragon’s Reach Part 1, Rytlock is surprisingly mild towards Rox’ insubordination. Sure, he rubs her nose in it, but there are no consequences for her. Not even a “we’ll talk about this later”-threat.

On this one in particular, that’s because Rytlock agrees with Rox’s call. He just doesn’t want to let her off the hook because she’s already too loose about following orders.

Dry Top

Ben K.6238

Not such necromancy it falls foul of the limit, so I figured I’d say it here since it’s relevant.

After Dry Top is no longer the ‘new area’, it’s going to be practically impossible to hit T5 without special circumstances. I’d suggest making it a guild challenge, or something similar with the weekly reward available to all players who participated in an event, in the guild or not, on hitting T5.

Thus it would be less likely to reach T5 than while it has been a new thing, but there’s still a reason to attempt it on a regular basis, and it would be organised by a guild so there’s a good chance of success.

The other thing that should be considered is the Sand Giant’s place here. Problem is, it’s competing with a load of more lucrative events for players. You can’t get the giant done alongside everything else. So it should probably be on a 3-4 hour timer – when it appears, the other boss events don’t, and the geode/sand reward for the giant should be set to make up the difference.

Rytlock Ritual End Fight

Group up indeed. With 2-5 players you can breeze through it.

These boss fights can be done solo – even the bonus achievements can be done solo – and even on a mesmer. Actually it’s fairly good on a mesmer – the fights where melee wasn’t a good option took me way longer on a guardian.

I’m enjoying the boss fights a lot more than the other stuff in 5-player dungeons – these ones have less HP but require a little care in how you fight them. A lot of care, in fact, if you’re trying for the bonus achievements – which is a good move on Arenanet’s part, giving players who want to be challenged a means to do so.

It’d be nice to tie up that loose end of what Eir did with the fragments of Magdir after AC story too. That’s never been adressed.

She was taking them to a (guessing here) norn smith to be repaired. My pick is Logan will try to use Magdaer to repeat the ritual and go after Rytlock.

Would be hilarious if Logan’s attempt actually succeeded where Rytlock’s failed and left him high, dry, ghostless and very much Tyria-bound. But perhaps due to the Power Of Symbolism™ it’s only going to work when man and charr complete the ritual together with both swords.

I tried to make a set for pure massive damage and I got annoyed that it’s blatantly difficult to stay close range on my warrior. This annoys me a bit.

Thank kitten for that or it’d be impossible to survive a fight against a zerker warrior.

Necromancers have a worse time of it than warriors for mobility in fights so I’m not sure that’s going to be your cup of tea either. Between the other two, the elementalist has a lot of versatility and the mesmer has a great utility package. Elementalists are generally easier to kill in WvW but they’re a bit more mobile and do better AoE damage.

Staff Mesmser viable?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ben K.6238

Ben K.6238

Mesmer and elementalist both benefit from mobility, and in that regard a staff is somewhat useful, but honestly a greatsword is a better ranged option in most situations.

Zaxares is correct that illusionary warlocks are brilliant against high HP enemies. They aren’t great for general use though because you need a lot of conditions on the target consistently.

And yes, the mesmer has a lot of bugs but it’s not broken. Phantasm attack bugs mean the focus is a risky offhand choice right now, and a bug with the staff blink stops you from moving at all if you cast it while knocked down. If you avoid those weapons and a small number of traits, it’s still very much playable.

…the dev team could tackel this week:

Maybe you think Arenanet are equivalent to gods, but it’s going to take them a lot longer than 7 days to rebuild the world like this.

I would have liked to see a version of this in the Mists instead of the current WvW system, but putting that system into the PvE overworld would be irritating for developers and players alike. And improving XP gain is just trolling for easy kills on low-level players – there are enough kittens doing that in WvW already without the need to make it even easier.

Regarding QoL #2: If Swap caused you to switch position with the last created clone, this problem would be solved. It would be useful to have the ability to cycle through clones but that may be more appropriate in a utility slot.

Teleport bug: I’ve found emotes and switching map are the only two ways to solve the problem. Even waypointing within the same map doesn’t allow me to move again. This bug is very easy to replicate: use Phase Retreat while knocked down. Locks my controls every time.

You can’t tell – it’s just a generalisation. Someone may only have 4k AP because they’re a WvW roamer and there just aren’t that many achievements to get by doing that. They might not know the dungeon paths, but they’re adaptable and should handle the pressure just fine with a little explanation on what’s coming up. Or they may only have 4k AP because they’ve done little other than bearbowing world boss / champ trains, and they’re going to fall to pieces.

Their build tells you way more than their AP total does.

If you’re talking about solo / small group roaming then I figure it’s WvW you’re looking at.

On the NA side I’d be looking at Fort Aspenwood or Maguuma. They’re in the spot where there’s always some activity, but it’s not 24/7 zergs full of garbage, and they’re not next in line to climb to the tier of servers that are (should one of the existing three implode).

Heavies slow you down, for a start. Generally I’ve found that low AP players are fine so long as they’re thinking about what they’re doing. And really it’s only below about 2,000 AP where you begin to find players who just have no idea what’s going on.

Most of the dungeons my group runs can be done with 3 players; filling out the rest just gets it done faster. If none of the players are experienced it’s a different story, but usually there’s a lot of room for error.

Really need a dueling menu

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ben K.6238

Ben K.6238

5v5 actually. One of the reasons they didn’t implement dueling was that it would give undue focus to disparities between classes in duel settings, where they’d been designed for their roles in 5v5. You’d be an idiot to take a staff ele to a 1v1 against a decent player, for example.

That said, there are a handful of arenas in the open world that could be reasonable venues for impromptu matches. The Bane in the Black Citadel, for example, is sitting there doing nothing at the moment. There’s at least 3 other arenas in the charr lands that I can think of, near Butcher’s Block, Ashford Forum and Steeleye Span. There are a few norn arenas as well, human training yards, and even Sparring Rock in Dry Top would provide some novelty value… but there’s still that problem with some classes being more powerful than others. Anyone who’s tried solo roaming in WvW will know exactly what’s going to happen.

It’d be nice to see an armour coupon but realistically we’re talking per-character gifts here. I’d like to see some additional racial armour sets, after all – themed to the sub-factions of each race. But if that’s not going to happen…

I’d actually prefer a random miniature as GW1 had, and it would be nice to have something to convert all those level 20 scrolls that aren’t a whole lot of good when you’re already over level 20.

I’d go for an ascended armour chest as well, but that’s getting a little greedy.

Dry Top concept art

in Living World

Posted by: Ben K.6238

Ben K.6238

Abstract or not, it’s got to represent whatever it’s intended to within the time that viewers spend loading – which is usually pretty short. I’m figuring that it’s supposed to communicate the theme for the zone, in which case it’s the wrong sort of image to do the job for viewers who don’t “get” abstract art.

Big Improvment

in Living World

Posted by: Ben K.6238

Ben K.6238

The map is a little small, but so was Dry Top in GW1 – yet what a difference. Landscape is nothing short of spectacular, which I was hoping to see in the reimagined Maguuma.

If we’re going to see a new area or map every month, I’ll be blown away. It is about time the world was expanded a bit, and so far it’s a good start, provided we get to see a variety of map layouts from the somewhat intimate Dry Top layout to sprawling areas more akin to Harathi Hinterlands, and all sorts in between. Can’t wait to see the Falls (and crossing my fingers we might see Rotscale again on Majesty’s Rest…)

The bosses are much more interesting as well. Actually needing an interrupt to complete one of them, rather than it just being outright immune to them 59 times out of 60, was very nice to see. “Explorable” achievements for the story mode instances that weren’t overly difficult but did require a bit of attention reminds me of the bonus goals for GW1 missions but with more flair. So far I found all three missions outstanding, and even the epilogue was an interesting moment from a lore perspective.

Was quite surprised that we didn’t find Belinda in need of rescue, too. I was expecting it to play out a bit like chasing the Chosen through the jungle in GW1, but it’s taken a more measured approach, and left me scratching my head about exactly what the bandits and Inquest are gathering all that copper for…

WvWvW =/ Open PvP zone.

WvWvW maps are simply too big, too plain, have map buffs and stuff like -40% condition duration food enabled, which is a joke.

They also highly favorize zerging.

That’s exactly what you’d see in an “open PvP” zone in the overworld. With a lot more spawn camping.

Proposed changes to conditions

in WvW

Ben K.6238

“I think OP is just whining about his class not being able to counter conditions”
I main a guardian, guardians have the best condition removal in the game, if I can’t counter them with a full anti condition build; something is seriously wrong.

I could tell you main a guardian as soon as you said burning was fine when all other degen conditions were overpowered.

The reason condition builds are so popular is that spike damage is much easier to counter. Conditions are also by far the best way to inflict reliable damage against all the PU mesmers and D/P thieves out there.

Where it becomes a problem is not so much the power of conditions, but the access of certain classes to so many conditions on short cooldowns. The addition of perplexity runes to take a condition designed for shutdown-specialist builds and hand them out like candy to anyone with a few interrupts just makes things even worse.

For some reason a thief had chosen the SW gate as the spot to contest a fully upgraded borderland garrison – for any other class that’s the worst place I can think of because it’s such a long bottleneck. Weakest server should NOT be red

in WvW

Ben K.6238

but when red always goes to weakest

It doesn’t. It hasn’t for over a year.

Three red servers are winning their matches, three are losing and two are coming second. The distribution isn’t strictly random but it’s close enough.

As far as tactical layout goes, red is the easiest side not to lose all of when you’re outmanned. Red keep is a little easier to break into at the south wall, but getting through inner is a pig. With all three EB keeps, if you can’t set up siege on the gate due to arrow carts, you have the option of trebbing some walls open. The problem with red keep is all of the spots where you can set trebs or catas to do that are extremely vulnerable to counter-siege.

Additionally, it’s one of the most dangerous keeps to rush because attackers are fish in a barrel anywhere they can hit the inner gate. Yes, they might be able to get through one gate fast if no-one’s watching, but you’d have to be on the shortest of short buses not to have a scout in the keep while someone’s trebbing it from Stonemist.
