Favorite LS Update

Flame and Frost hands down. This update came during my two weeks of finals, and I only had four days to play it, however, I wore the MF dungeon out. I loved it, the dungeon wasn’t overly time consuming and the mechanics where fun and unique. Additionally, I could bring my alts in to play and level up because the scaling didn’t punish them too badly.

Least Favorite LS Update

Blood and Madness, I haven’t even finished my meta achievement. It’s all open this # of trick or treat bags, or close this # of doors. I just went with friends who had finished to see the close of the event. Going out and doing the same thing a certain number of times just feels too grindy to me and I’m not going to do them any more since I don’t find them fun.

P.S. More titles please? The first thing I do when an update comes out is look to see if we might be able to get a title, I’m always disappointed when there isn’t one.

Do we need a Clean Orr map?

Yes, I think there needs to be a new map, which they gradually update with greenery and rebuilding. Orr seems like it was once so beautiful, I would love to walk the city without fear for my life eventually.

I think it can easily be done if it’s like what they did for Kessex in this last update. If you haven’t completed the first instance you’re taken to the instance, if you have you’re taken to Kessex.

Thus, if the individual character has completed the living story you’re taken to the rebuilt Orr map, else the undead Orr map. I’m not sure on the world map if you’d be able to see the difference, I think it could be done, but I don’t know how the world map is pulled.

Well done. I love the downed state for the mobs.

I love that I’m seeing corruption spread to these monsters and they are giving off an green hue, almost like the black hue of a certain undead dragon I have high hopes where this story is going.

I have a friend that has the following legendaries:

Both greatswords
Sword
Shield
Hammer

for the precursors one was a drop and the other four were from the mystic forge. I’m happy for him, and he plays more than I do. However, how does one person manage to get five precursors over the course of a year? That’s almost one every other month for him.

I know people that play as much as he does and haven’t even gotten one. This troubles me. It almost feels as if when you make your account you’re assigned a random number 1-10 and the closer to 10 you are the better your luck. He was assigned a 10 and is thus luck made human pixels.

RNG needs to be taken out for things like legendaries. I would much rather a long, time-gated chain of events that would take several months to finish that ends in your choice of a precursor. I’m not suggesting time gated as go collect 100,000 ancient logs and when you get back you can continue. I’m saying time gated as like a daily quest, you can only do one step a day and there’s 120 steps. One of the steps could be killing Teq to get a tooth or something, but that tooth would be guaranteed if you are on that step. Doing this will create a sense of progress and accomplishment when finished. Additionally, if done right, if can be epic, another story for your character to live through, and repeatable.

Living Story

I love what you’ve done with Kessex, you’ve created curiosity and foreshadowing. I would like to see more of that.

What I would like to see now is character development. I want strong npcs. NPCs that we love, NPCs that we love to hate. I was an beloved NPC to betray us. I want to track down the NPC for vengeance and come across why I was betrayed and I want to be torn. What the npc did was wrong, the methods they are taking are wrong but I can understand why I was betrayed. In their place would I have done the same thing? I’d like to see racial prejudice, conflicting oaths and a dragon at the root of all the turmoil. Stories that bring emotion and show shades of grey are the best kind. I don’t even watch Hollywood movies any more because they are so predictable. Please don’t be predicable, please don’t have explosions just because they’re shiny, don’t make two characters fall in love because every other story has one. The good stories make you question your morals, the good stories you understand the villian and can see yourself acting the same way in their place. Crazy scientists aren’t good villains. The best villain is a dark reflection of your inner self.


As to favorite television shows. I don’t watch much television but I have followed Avatar the Last Airbender and Game of Thrones very closely.

In Avatar you have Zuko, the older prince banished by his father to caputer the avatar who has been missing for over 100 years. An impossible task. This desire to be accepted by his father drives this villain to hunt our main character. The Fire Lord’s desire to dominate the earth comes from his grandfather’s original desire to unite the world under one kingdom. This, he thought, was the best way to establish peace and unity. Then we have Azula, her mother favored Zuko, and she acted out to get attention. All she wanted was to be loved and accepted by her mother, but she knew her mother, “thought I was a monster.” After her mother left she truly became one.

Game of Thrones: again strong characters, good foreshadowing, and most importantly no one is safe. At some point in time a character that you like will die. Each character acts in their own interest and their personalities drive them. Cersei Lannister who’s one redeeming quality is how much she cares for her children. Jamie Lannister who ran into conflicting oaths and had to choose which to break. Arya, who’s had everything taken from her and is being eaten alive by the desire for revenge. I could go on. I’m more a fan of the books that the show (more clothing).

And lastly, I will say Harry Potter (the books) since I felt it would have had a better translation to the TV screen if it had been a TV series rather than a movie.

The characters are memorable, well-developed and quirky.
The plots,...such as the betrayal of Quirinus Quirrell and supposed betrayal of Mad-Eye Moody, who was really an imposter planted by the antagonist are mysteries to be solved. This community loves speculation, they would thrive on a mystery.

Also, in each of these TV series you have to have been following the show to understand what is currently happening. Looking at previous episodes can help you predict future ones. To do this there would have to be some way for people to get a “recap” of what’s going on within the game engine. Most players are too lazy to try to find the wiki that will explain the plot.
In short, send imposters to infiltrate us, betray us, and make us question our morals.

I am a little confused to if there is a difference between the living world and the living story, so I will give my input on both since I see others doing the same.

Living World

I know that roughly every fifteen minutes in Queensdale that bandits will attack the farm or Edna’s orchard will be overrun with spiders. While I am grateful for the consistency when trying to rush through a daily, this doesn’t feel alive to me, the npcs are stuck in a bubble constantly clearing out spiders or harvesting apples. They never try to do anything to prevent the attacks again, or do anything with the apples. Longer event chains with multiple paths will give the npc’s life and develop personalities and back stories. Maps with the highest amount of traffic should be given attention first, and the longest and most varied event chains since people are more likely to see them.

Example:

Clear out the spiders infesting the orchard -> Kill the Huge Orchard Spider -> split

RNG chance to Escort Edna to ask farmer over the hill about spiders -> Gather the materials for pesticide -> Escort Edna back to the Orchard -> apply the pesticide -> defend the orchard from the poisoned spiders -> clear the dead spiders from the orchard; results in a chain of 8 events.

Or

RNG chance to Escort Edna to town to hire mercenaries -> defeat the mercenaries in a drinking game so they’ll help Edna -> escort Edna + mercenaries back to orchard -> help the mercenaries defend the orchard from spiders -> find the spider’s lair -> kill the champion spider queen ; results in a chain of 8 events

While Edna’s gone, back at the orchard her assistant can be tending the orchard: Prune the apple trees ; fertilize the apple trees ; water the apple trees ; collect spices for Edna’s apple pies.

Having this chain that splits off to provide variety, and having the assistant taking care of the orchard while Edna is away will make it feel like these npc’s have life rather than waiting for the next round of events to start. Assuming each of the 8 events in the chain takes 5-10 minutes, that’s about forty minutes to a little less than and hour and a half (assuming I can do math) to complete the entire chain. I’d say the casual player plays 2 hours or less each night, if the apple event is lengthened to a longer chain the casual player would not repeatedly do the same events, they may not even have time to complete the two chains in one evening, and thus the bubble is not seen.

For the bandits attacking the ranch I could see an event to help build a better fence by collecting wood and stone, then actually helping build the fence, which the bandits would later tear down. Or training the cows to defend themselves so they can help fight the bandits in the next attack.

Seeing the npc’s doing something about their situation rather than getting attacked over and over again would breath a sense of life into the world. True, you cannot escape the bubble, but if you enlarge the bubble enough it won’t be as obvious.

Stuck out of combat

Tonight and yesterday I’ve gotten a bug where I cannot use my attacks or skills. I press a button to attack, the skill darkens, then is normal as if I never pressed the button. For ground targeting skills I place it on the ground but nothing happens.

Re-logging fixes it. Both times I was on my ranger in Queensdale, Tarnished Coast.

Once was after killing a harpy during an event at the dam (sword/dagger). The other over by the champ oakheart event (shortbow). Both times I locked up after killing a monster. I jumped down into a nest of Ettins thinking to force combat, and while the options to change skills went away, I still could not attack anything, another player had to save me >.>

When I asked around tonight, a friend of mine said he has gotten the bug too.

I’d like to hear what the Devs feel about taking this idea of Collaborative Development a giant leap further by introducing infrastructure to support Community-Created aesthetic content: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/suggestions/User-Created-Skins/

Community content has been proven to be a more than viable model to sustain the demand for skins in hugely successful horizontal progression based games like TF2 and Dota 2. I firmly believe it could do wonders for the aesthetic progression issues Guild Wars 2 is facing as well.

Sorry for the double post but just saw this and this would be really neat, in the Sims you can go download better hair and whatnot for the game. None of my Sims use hair that EA created because the users create better hair. Not sure how we’d go about getting the skins in game though. Perhaps replacing heart vendors generic skins with the user created ones, I always thought heart vendors would be a cool way to get unique skins, gives more of a reason to do hearts too.

I have a suggestion for the “polls”. I don’t think the forums would be a few good idea. My understanding is most players do not use the forums. I myself avoided them for the first 6 months I played the game. Therefore, I believe the polls need to be taken in game, however, I agree with some of the other posters. They shouldn’t be a check the box, or on a scale of 1-5, you need an explanation in a players own words of what they do and do not like.

My suggestion is open up a research lab within Rata Sum, not Lion’s Arch. Put the little Asura’s to work, have a PvP, PvE, and WvW divisions within the lab. They should take the surveys which can be emailed to you for reading. The ideas you’d like to follow up on, make a forum thread for posting the original idea, and what you can/can’t follow up on out of it and start a discussion about it here. Give credit to the guy with the idea so when something pops new comes out in game that person can feel a sense of pride and say, “I influenced this update.”

Another thing I would like to suggest about the living story is that you have a whole world and one person is creating a ruckus. Who says one storyline has to happen at a time? The biggest compliant I’ve seen about Scarlet is that she does not seem to have anything to do with the dragons. Personally, I’m waiting to reserve judgement of Scarlet until her storyline plays out. If Scarlet has nothing to do with the dragons, I would like to suggest you start putting out another storyline to progress the dragon one. I feel the world would be more alive and dynamic if you didn’t just have one villain moving at a time. To do this you would have to lengthen the amount of time “temporary” content is in game which would address another common complaint.

I’ve suggested on another thread making us care about the npcs. One of the things I really like in console RPGs is you can do side quests with npcs to find out more about their background and what makes them tick. Perhaps Braham is responsible for his father’s death and that’s why Eir doesn’t seem to like him much. Maybe Rox is actually working for Scarlet. I don’t know anything about these characters but right now they feel like they had no life before the Scarlet saga began.

I don’t think the plot should be compromised (accelerated) just because players are unhappy that they don’t see Scarlet’s motive. I would much rather little hints be laying around, perhaps by talking to people in Rata Sum or other npc conversations that players could start piecing together to figure it out. Maybe a journal in that aetherblade jumping puzzle.

I love to read but what I really love about RPGs is the story can be taken beyond what you’re given if you look for it. For example, in Tales of Symphonia the player can find out extras about the main character’s mother if they take the time to travel out of their way during certain parts of the story. Additionally, you can help another character come to terms with being responsible for his lover’s death. I don’t remember there being any achievements for these things, just the understanding for what makes that character act the way they did. You can finish the game and have a clear understanding of the plot at the end but these extras help reinforce and create interest. Stuff like this is what I’d like to see.

After some careful investigation of these achievements, we believe there are a few technical restrictions and communication issues that are causing the problems here.

First, Molten and Pirate events do not grant achievement credit. This means that if you hop into an invasion right as scarlet spawns, or if you spend an entire invasion on pirate and/or molten events, you will not get achievement credit for that map.

Second, disconnecting during an invasion seems to have some odd effects on participation credit, especially if you end up switching maps in the process (i.e. moving to a different overflow). You should still get credit if you participate in at least one watchwork event after reconnecting, but if you disconnect, you should assume your participation credit up to that point has been lost. This is far from ideal, but it would be a code-level fix, and we wouldn’t be able to get it in before the end of the event.

Lastly, because the previous two issues are not super obvious, people may be losing track of which maps they have already gotten credit for. The meta rewards are always given as long as you’re on the map when it ends. Many players expect this to mean that they also received achievement credit (which ideally should be a reasonable assumption). However, as this is not always the case, they may mark off a map as complete, even though they did not receive achievement credit.

So in order to receive achievement credit, you need to participate and complete at least one watchwork portal event, and still be on the map when the meta ends. It doesn’t matter how far the meta gets progressed, and you don’t need to participate in any Molten/Pirate events.

Hopefully this clarifies some things for you, and many apologies for any frustration this has caused. In the future, we will try to ensure that large-scale achievements like this are more easily trackable to cut down on any potential confusion.

I’m not so sure it’s complete RNG, I took a few coding classes in college and you can set limits on “randomness”, it sounds to me like they wrote a code that looks at the entire release and makes sure that the 13 maps come up at the same time every day during the two weeks it’s out, whatever’s left is random. Just thinking about the code gives me a headache, I hope Anet has some super talented code writers. These are just my thoughts though after reading what Anthony wrote.

As for it feeling like a job, I agree. I had set an alarm on my phone trying to nail down my last two maps I was missing. So that every hour on the hour (when I was at home) I’d stop what I was doing and run upstairs to check who was being invaded this time. It would have been a better plan to publish the daily schedules so that people could just look and plan accordingly if they wanted the achievement, in my opinion.

  • Every map will be invaded at least once per day, probably twice. In some cases, three times.
  • Builds do not affect the rotation.
  • The rotation is the same across all servers.

swift closer bugged?

Honestly, I was just hitting as many as I could since I read in the forums it was bugged. I believe I got around 5 or so silver and bronze medals when the achievement notification popped up. I didn’t focus on killing champions or anything either just ran to an event killed what was easy and moved on when I saw that I’d gotten kill exp.

Make sure you are killing the twisted minions and not the aetherblades/molten alliance. Those events don’t count towards it.

I only got the achievement Saturday, what I did was only focused on the minions (no pirates or MF guys) and I basically ran around killing one or two things in each event and leaving before the event was over to move on to another.

In order to fix the game they need to have more information rather than “it’s not working”. I got all 13 maps on the first try.

Perhaps listing the time, map, and server as well as the character class and level you completed the invasion on but did not get the achievement will shed some light as to why some people are getting credit and others are not so the Devs can fix the issue.

Aren't Overflows Supposed To Have Invasions?

I’ve noticed the events tend to start at the beginning of each hour, when it gets close to the top of the hour go to DR and watch the meta for the update and port immediately. I’ve never ported into an overflow not running the event by using this method. I’ve also never been in a failed event, but that depends on the group you’ve gotten in with.

I would go out and kill an aetherblade captain and see if you don’t get one of the items back. If you do, then you can get the rest again. If you do not I would suggest submitting a ticket so they can hopefully return your items to you and forward the issue to the correct team to fix it.

I would think just doing the events to get the items again would be enough, I’m pretty sure the code is set to check if you’re on the stage of Vorpp’s quest to get the items, then checks your inventory for the items and rewards you with them if you do not have them. Of course if they’ve set a flag to turn on when you get them (so if you store them in your bank you won’t get another) you may be out of luck.

I’ve done about 7 battles now and Scarlet’s Playhouse and my one criticism of the event is Scarlet melting. Out of those seven (all succeeded) I’ve only been lucky enough to have her spawn close to me: once. Thankfully for the achievement once is all you need, however she simply dies to fast one of the times I managed to hit her three times before she died and didn’t receive credit for killing her.

My suggestion is add some zeros or make her fight similar to the one in the playhouse where we have to work together to be able to damage her.

First of all I would like to say I am glad to see that Anet is reading our responses and taking what the community says into consideration.

I haven’t read the whole thread, but what I did read brought up some good points and I would like to reiterate and elaborate.

The Living Story, not really changing: meaning this month we’re going out into the world to find:

Holograms
Kites
Balloons

I’m going to focus on the kites in particular here because this one gave me the most grief. I hate jumping puzzles, if not for a Mesmer friend I would not have been able to get most of the kites, in fact I never got the WvW one because I didn’t want to bother my friend with it. I would have really liked to have seen some ORs for the kite achievements. By ORs I mean achievements like those you get for completing racial storylines, you only need to complete one storyline to get the achievement. If you had made the jumping puzzle kites, kites in the different WvW castles, and kites in dungeons that would have allowed the players to target their niche and not spend the entire update trying to jump. Players would get to pick what they like best and not feel punished if they can’t complete the Pig Iron Quarry jp for the kite, instead, they can go take Stonemist Castle or complete Arah p4.

Further looking into the OR idea, I did like parts of this update (the wallet, champ drops, dungeon rewards +10) but the gauntlet upstairs, I understand why you have the two minute time limit, but I really think it would be better to give us an option to go into our own instance where you have unlimited or longer time and get the achievements. My ele hasn’t had a problem fighting any of the people in the gauntlet, except for the time factor, if this tournament is really about skill rather than who can deal a high amount of damage in a short amount of time an option to go longer than two minutes should be there, they just can’t be fighting in the domes for others to watch.

I also agree with the time crunch we’re given, I’m moving this weekend and will be without internet at home for several days. I’m ripping my hair out because I may have to miss out on stuff just because AT&T said they signed me up and scheduled me for tomorrow two weeks ago, to find out last week when I hadn’t heard from them that they never even put me in the system. I loved the MF, that was my favorite update, but it was during finals week, so I had hardly any time to enjoy it. Unfortunately I can’t think of a way you all could have kept it open unless you had perhaps let it run alongside the next update and had it take awhile to fully “shut down”. I could realistically see the Queens Gauntlet Area staying forever, why would Jennah build it to not let anyone in after a month?

I started playing in January, so I wouldn’t have noticed these new events that have been put in but, I have noticed on almost every update my guild mates saying, “Oh this is different, Anet must have snuck this in.” I would like to see very detailed patch notes with the name of the event and in what map, this why people can go check it out, if you sneak it in or just vaguely mention it, how do you expect people to realize it’s new and not something they overlooked?

I’m looking forward to being able to craft precursors, and I really hope the new legendary staff skin is awesome. There are few staves that I like, been using the krytan one up until the achievement weapons came out. Though I think it would be interesting to have a quest chain as long as the living story, and more complicated to get specific precursors as a reward at the end. That way it’s not: go out and collect 250 of this item, 250 of that item, 250 of these, oh and 1000 of those over there. Could have the 250 items within the quest. I see it as an opportunity to do some serious character development, and maybe internal cooldowns to make it take longer so people can’t just blow through the quest chain, or certain achievements have to be completed for the next quest event to start perhaps, like Dungeon Master.

You may want to go in and see if you can’t find a group that will let you take turns for the achievement, I was working on the 15 kills last night and someone else working on it in my instance asked in map chat it we couldn’t just take turns killing each other. So we all did that until we had our achievement. Some people want to actually play and will complain, I understand, but our whole group was fine with the arrangement and went back to playing after we all got credit.

Hello~

I’ve grown tired of joining in solo matches for tPvP, but due to the time constraints of work and school (and the fact that ya’ll usually stay up quite late) I just don’t feel comfortable committing to a team. So, I would like to offer myself up as a stand in. I have a mic and headphones, and am a quick leaner who knows how to follow directions.

Send me a whisper in game if ya’ll just need that one more player to join in and I would be happy to. I typically run my necro, but I have one of each class, except ranger (which I will create the next time character slots go on sale).

I usually start playing an hour before reset.

Build Templates - Please?

Tpvp elementalist staff build help

I have a staff elementalist and I think she does pretty well as a bunker. I’ve switched to using my necro though since to play my ele effectively I need to be on a balanced team that communicates. Her main problem is I can’t kill anyone quickly with her, but they cannot kill me either. So I have to have a roamer come and take care of anyone trying to take my point.

What I would like to see is throughout the personal story optional-limited time story quests that pop up to do. These could help our character develop a personality depending on our choices. Perhaps, doing these can ultimately lead to you resting control from Trahearne or Trahearne stepping down to be your advisor. Of course it’s probably too late to do this with the story quest up until now, but it would be nice to have something to develop our character depending on what actions we chose for them.

I’m a big fan of the Tales game, I really liked that in Tales of Symphonia how you treated certain characters in side quests did effect which ending you got because it affected the npc’s attitude toward the main character

But yeah, Trahearne should have had a better character design if he was going to be the hero.

Buddy List Groups

I would really like a way to organize by buddy list so I can remember who is who. Right now I have added WvW commanders who I like to follow, and people who are looking for spvp teams, on top of people I run dungeons with, but I can really only remember those I play with daily. I find myself going back to posts in the forums to confirm they are the person looking for an spvp group before whispering.

In another game I played we had the ablilty to create groups, or categories, within our buddy list and it really helped me to keep people organized. I think the concept is a good one and I would like to suggest it as an idea for the future.
