Difficulty level for non-tanking classes

When I took a thief to the fight with Doc Howler I won by just spamming death blossom. No skill, no finesse, I hesitate to even call it a faceroll because it was just one button to win. It was like I was playing WoW again.

Even a natural 20-25 can kill the mobs in the help Kari event in 5 seconds.

I rarely do Orr events because map completion gives orders of magnitude more rewards for less effort but I have yet to attempt a non group event solo and fail it, and I have completed several group events solo as well.

I play all the story steps as a thief,

I think everyone needs to re-read that post, slowly, multiple times. All story quests are playtested on a thief, not a downlevelled 80 warr or guard, an appropriate level thief.

In what universe are highly telegraphed cc’s annoying?

Orr is far too easy as it is. Making it any easier and you may as well just make it hand you a free boost to 80 and full set of ascended.

Pay attention to the [Group Event] tag. It means the event is made specifically for groups. Many still can be done solo, but they aren’t made for it.

“Forget the power of gadgets, elixirs and common balance. Forget the promise of progress and buffs, for there is no peace across the stars, only an eternity of nerfs and slaughter and the laughter of thirsting devs.

In the grim darkness of the far future there is only NERF." – Warhammer 40,000

The tragedy of Orr

I seriously have to wonder if people are playing the same game as me with all the ‘OMFG respawn rates’ posts going around. I ran through Orr on a full cleric guardian and never saw any sort of insane respawn rate despite having game-worst kill speeds.

I also have to wonder if it’s the same game when people say ‘alt-f4 worthy frustration’. The risen are hardly war gods…

The only point people make about Orr I can agree with is ‘boring and unrewarding’.

Putrifier cc lasts 2 seconds and they cc themselves for the same duration, spectral guards use an actual unmodified player skill to cc, what mob exactly has such insane cc that player skills only offer a ‘sliver’ of the cc time?

Some plot points didn’t get thought through all that well, obviously. The immortality-granting armour from the green knight storyline is a classic example.

There isn’t really anything wrong with the level of difficulty (except for being disappointing for vets of the clocktower), it’s more how the difficulty is implemented. The snowflakes at the start are the hardest part of the puzzle and the disappearing platforms make it necessary to wait for the puzzle to reset before it can be attempted again despite having a perfectly valid time limit in the dot it puts on you.

The way I think special event JPs could be improved would be to have a casual mode that allows people to experience the content and practice it in a low stress environment, then the puzzle itself with all the difficulty raising mechanics and the standard reward, and finally a hardcore mode that brings things up to clocktower difficulty with an increased reward.

I don’t think anyone would have any reason to object to that layout.

I wanna bring some perspective to this. The op wasn’t talking about having 5 champ abominations dropped on him with 25 stacks of frenzy preloaded, he was talking about risen BRUTES: perma-crippled mobs that have a melee only knockdown that is telegraphed from about the width of the universe away. If you aren’t paying enough attention to your opponents’ capabilities to play to their weaknesses instead of to their strengths you deserve the death.

The problem seems to be that people come here from WoW expecting all world pve to be against mobs that have half the offence of a healer and half the defence of a dps and no abilities beyond a half hearted melee swing. Mobs here are far more dangerous, you aren’t supposed to be able to just headbutt your keyboard in search of an instant win button.

And as far as the whole ‘every build should be viable everywhere’ thing goes, why are you playing a game where building and customising your character is the main focus if you aren’t going to actually use that customisation to try and make something better? Are you saying I should be able to just randomly click what gear and traits I want while blindfolded and then faceroll Orr with it?

PS: thief is really, really easy to solo Orr with. I most recently completed Orr on a thief and I’d say it’s probably the easiest class to do it with except maybe guardian.

In my view, the Trinity Needs to Come Back

I’m going to pick on WoW some more here (bias ftw). In any encounter in pve there is always a specific method to win. That method is usually only able to be discovered by trial and error, because in a purely statistics based system there is no way to create true difficulty. Futhermore, when you know the method, the game is almost literally telling you what button to press next to win. In other words, the game wants you to beat it, if you do what it’s telling you, you will beat it.

Also, one of my WoW playing friends bots herioc raids as a healer and tops heals with a lower ilvl than the other healers. If a bot can do it you cannot tell me that it takes skill.

The trinity in other mmos takes absolutely zero skill. So long as you know what you have to do and when and your gear is up to par, you cannot fail. You may as well play DDR on your keyboard.

Remove stealth

Coldtart.4785

You guys do realise that most thieves most of the time are spending 1/4 second in stealth because they’re only activating it to use their ambush attacks right? Also if they are spending a lot of time in stealth to stall or w/e it really benefits you just as much because your cooldowns are ticking down while they aren’t attacking you.

The only reasonable nerf I could see being made to stealth is to make the ambushes break stealth regardless of whether they cause damage, since it’s pretty silly that you can blow a backstab on aegis and just have another go.

Getting CC-chained by Orr mobs

If you want an example of everyone else’s level I have solo completed all 3 Orr maps on ele, mesmer, necro, warr, guard and thief so far and it really hasnt been that hard. If you pay attention and learn what all the mobs can do, you should have no difficulty. Every risen type in Orr has glaring drawbacks to their most dangerous moves that can easily be exploited.

I didn’t want to have to be the one to say l2p but really, this is world pve, the easiest part of the game. Stop whining when you die and try to figure out what you could have done to not die.

If you swap to The Dreamer as a male toon you should do a voice clip telling everyone that they are not man enough to use The Dreamer.

Better female armor options

Coldtart.4785

I’d say the real problem is that it’s one-sided. Instead of making more concealing gear for females make more sexy gear for males. All those med trenchcoats just look made for it, unbutton a few of them and you get some instant eye candy for the ladies.

The dual wasp champ event is another I’ve done solo, or at least used a strat that would allow me to fight indefinitely as other people turned up eventually. Their attacks are pure melee so it’s quite easy to beat them with ranged attacks or by simply circle-strafing while using your own melee. The only time you have to dodge is when they fly up in a loop and begin jabbing multiple times with their stinger.

There are tricks to almost every champion you see in the world. Most of the time it’s the pretty boring ‘just use range’ but others alternate between attacks that are easily withstood or avoided without using a dodge and attacks that are devastating but telegraphed. The trial and error of some of them can be frustrating because some attacks are near instant kills but you should really only ever die to them once.

I find it funny to read through all the events that everyone claims cannot be done solo and count how many I have done solo, even some of the group events like branded army and Ash Horizon. The only problems I’ve ever run into with non group events being difficult to solo are escort events that fail on escortee death, the escortees tend to die far too easily and mobs aren’t nice enough to all come single file from one direction.

Getting CC-chained by Orr mobs

Coldtart.4785

The only way to get CC chained in Orr is by not paying attention and overpulling. Risen gank squads almost never have more than 1 putrifier and their pull is telegraphed from a mile away. To everyone saying Orr is a solo free zone: I have never not solo completed all 3 Orr maps.
