With only three days to play, will those who are referred have upward level scaling or will they have to rush to an approrpiate level? Considering where lost shores is located I doubt anyone will be showing up as a level 1.
The weekend event will allow players of all levels to participate by level-adjusting them up to level 80 for the event specifically. Same goes for the new dungeon and the new PvP map (since PvP always does that!)
The idea is you should be able to bring your friends for the weekend and let them see any of the new stuff with you during their trial if they want to check it out!
Your friends will be able to access the server you’re on for this event, no worries.
From tonight’s update notes, we found a way to try and help folks out we could sneak in that wouldn’t break our November stuff that launched today as well. As Anthony linked above →
“Unfortunately, Hurricane Sandy has made these past few days very hard for some of our players on the east coast of the United States. We would like to extend our condolences to all those affected by the storm. We recognize that because of power failures and the general situation, many players have been unable to meet Mad King Thorn in Lion’s Arch. One of the fake Mad King Thorn actors has decided to stick around until 11/15 to ensure that those who couldn’t play due to the storms still receive the “Attend the Party” achievement. If you missed the final event, you will be able to speak to him at the Grand Piazza in Lion’s Arch and receive both your achievement and a Halloween hat.”
Please see this note added to tonight’s update notes in relation to the final achievement for the festival, and those who have been unable to play due to the massive storm conditions on the US East Coast:

The event and the stuff going on that weekend will basically all be able to be accessed by characters of any level using our level-scaling technology.
We want everyone to be able to check it out.
More details….As they emerge from the depths.
Since the questions weren’t asked I couldn’t answer them, but I’ll just jump in and say we’ve got teams working on a lot of the major feedback areas in the game as well.
From a new team we hired to destroy bots, to the recent FOV beta changes we implemented, to a team investigating and fixing events that stall and more. We’ve got peeps building and expanding the game, and entire teams dedicating to working on the parts of it that already exist as well.
These are all separate groups of people, so doing one doesn’t mean we aren’t doing the other.
The event will continue to run every 30-60 minutes all day long.
(Sorry on the original timing # misquote folks got confused and have now clarified the timing for us.)
(edited by ColinJohanson.2394)
Hey folks,
Since it has been a few weeks since we gave an update on this, just wanted to quickly update where we stand. We recently hired an entire new team of people with one mission in mind: operation bot destruction.
They’ve been getting everything in place to accomplish our goal of making botting, hacking, spamming, and malicious behavior as non-existent as possible in Gw2. In the last few weeks, over 10,000 bot accounts were banned from the game alone. Another area of massive improvement has been in account security, where our two-factor authentication as well as your password changes have led to account thefts dropping to a tiny rate. A vast majority of account thieves use those accounts to run bots and/or perform RMT transactions, so our serious beefing up of account security has led to fewer bots, and most importantly fewer stolen accounts. That being said, we have massive improvements on the way in the next couple of weeks that help us detect, verify, and remove botters.
What we don’t want to do is have someone report you as botting, we ban the account, the bot appeals, and we have no data to prove they were botting on file so we have to give them the account back. Ensuring we have 100% clear data on bots that’s incredibly easy for our GM team to quickly verify, and when an appeal is submitted verify within seconds if the person was truly botting is our most important goal. We don’t want to ban people who were not botting, and we want to keep the people who are permanently locked out.
Bottom line: We’re doing ok, but we know we can and need to do much better on this front and are putting massive resources behind ensuring we have a permanent solution to this issue. You’ll see a dramatic improvement in this area in the next few weeks as our remaining detection and bot destruction tools and staff come online.
We’ll continue to keep updating on this front as we go forward, but rest assured we are aware of issues folks are raising and take them incredibly seriously. From FOV to bots, account restoration to more awesome stuff to do at level 80 we have teams working like mad on all of these fronts.
You can indeed, the costume brawl will continue on!
Lunatic Inquisition should be fixed any second now, we’re working on Reapers Rumble as we speak but it’ll be a bit longer.
Thanks for your patience folks, even more spooky festivities on the way!
You misunderstood me, there is an entire group of people working on balancing the game as I write this…
<<If you’re telling us that the focus is creating new content to do with the max level builds we worked hard to create instead of mini-games I can greatly appreciate that.>>
Correct, yes, that’s what we’re saying =)
Also that should say the next pvp update will be a written blog post with pictures and more that’ll come sometime around/after the Shadow of Mad King release, I’m on a roll today =)
(edited by ColinJohanson.2394)
Yeah just to clarify, the update before Shadow of the Mad King will be a written blog post update summarizing a bunch of information about upcoming features and pvp additions.
We realize there are a number of key features required to both grow and expand the pvp community, and we’re both actively developing all of those, and ready to talk about some of them in more detail next week.
As for class balance and skills, other teams not directly working on the pvp features are working on that stuff and will give updates once they have a clear plan in place. What we don’t want to do is post and say, “We’re doing x and this is how it’s going to work!” and then come back say, “no we lied we are actually doing Y”. We have a strict policy of talking about features and changes once they are far enough along we feel comfortable they are going to work, so we’re actually always delivering on our promises.
We totally agree! We’re working on another upcoming PvP stuff update that’ll be coming out shortly once we’ve verified everything is working correctly.
We’ve actually posted in a number of threads here (now no longer on the front page) detailing what our plans are in the near future for SPvP, as well as posted a blog post that summarizes what’s coming shortly, and the build note preview on paid tournaments for the Halloween update. We’ll be going into more detail specific about competitive pvp next week on the blog including screenshots and feature descriptions, and of course will continue to update in these forums as well.
Transparency in every part of the game is very important to us, and I think you’ll be thrilled so see how quickly new features for pvp come rolling online over the next few months. This is a huge focus for us, and a community and part of the game we take very seriously, and we’ll strive to keep making sure you all know what we’ve got planned, and where we’re taking the game to reach its ultimate long term goals.
A number of the activities/mini-games are things we decided to table for a while in favor of focusing on features and areas we felt were more important for the game. That being said, if you like activities, make sure to stop in and visit during the big Halloween festivities running from Oct 22nd-Nov1st!
In the short-term we’re currently focused on adding a massive wealth of additional content and features for players to do in the game using the players core skill-bar, which you’ll start seeing in the Shadow of the Mad King update in October as well as our massive November release.
Long term we’ll absolutely be adding more activities as well, but we want to make sure we’ve got loads of stuff to do at level 80 in PvP, WvW, and PvE using your characters core skill-bar first and foremost, and we’re dedicating our focus in that area. Down the road, we’ll continue to expand on the scope of activities available in the game as well.
We’re in the middle of working on additional fixes for the FOV, we’ll have an update on this very shortly. We’ve been doing some very promising tests internally, will role out more info soon once we’re sure everything is working!
You use normal keys to open the chests yes, there won’t be an additional chest type for Halloween, it’ll simply be that the existing black lion chests have new items that can be found in them during the 10 day Halloween festivities.
And also since I’m sure someone will ask this, yes there are loads of other Halloween rewards you can earn over the course of the festival that don’t come out of these chests!
And finally, make sure to be around on Sunday October 28th mid-day pacific time, you’re NOT going to want to miss it!
We’ve got folks investigating this, thanks everyone we’ll figure out what’s going on and get it fixed ASAP!
Just wanted to quickly add we’ve got people working on fixing issues with free server transfers as well, its proven far more complicated than we originally intended/expected to get done but is absolutely being built and is coming as soon as we can possibly get it in and bug-free.
We’ll also be working on a number of other WvW features we’ll talk more about in the coming months once they’re closer to being implemented!
Rank is intended to be a metric to show much how you’ve played of PvP, and how experienced you are over-all as a result. The various banners that come with rank is a bit of a prestige thing that says “I’ve played me a ton of PvP!”
The addition of our new paid tournaments, and the features that will follow after it will be how we answer that clear question of: “who is the best”. We think it’s important to have both. As we begin our new live releases, starting with Shadow of the Mad King (and the new pvp hero tab and paid tournaments) you’ll see pvp feature additions come very regularly going forward!
All the best and happy n00b stomping,
I feel like the sandwichmancer class remains horribly unbalanced, NERF IT ANET!
Just wanted to pop in and say thanks to everyone for all the nice comments about Gw2 in this thread. We’re thrilled to see such an overwhelming majority of you feel like you got more than your moneys worth out of Gw2!
And while that is all well and good, we’d like to think we can give you even more for that initial $60 investment. The Shadow of the Mad King release on 10/22 is just the start of what will be a series of high quality regular releases expanding on all parts of the Gw2 world, from special events and holidays, to new content and features.
Our hope is by the end of the year, you look back on those $60 and feel like you not only got a great game, you also got a massive amount of live additions as part of that one-time purchase.
We’d love to have you all come back to this thread on January 1st 2013 and let us know how we’re doing
Thanks again everyone, and see you in game!
All of the additions in this Shadow of the Mad King release except for the Halloween holiday stuff itself will permanently stay in the game, yes.
If you want to catch the Halloween stuff, you’re going to want to make sure you’re here for the holiday festival! It comes in acts, so check in on a regular basis over the course of the week after the release goes live!
The new events, bosses, and mini-dungeons are included in the Shadow of Mad King release, same thing goes for everything on that page!
Hey folks,
We will be pushing a build shortly that should resolve this issue. Thanks very much for being patient, this one was more complicated to fix than normal, but it looks we’ve got a handle on it and will get it taken care of very soon.
It absolutely means that, yes!
The last data I saw had an overwhelming majority of transfers from servers with long queu times (generally from winning servers), to servers with short queu times (generally to losing servers). There are some people going to the winning servers, but the simple truth is the vast majority are not.
That being said, we are working on long term improvements to queus, transfers, and WvW content in general. We’ll talk more about this in the future as features/plans get closed to being finalized.
Sometimes yes, sometimes no, it’ll depend on the event and the scope of the stuff going on. Some events will be designed for the community to work together and piece together information based on stuff they see/discover in game we don’t give any pre-warning about what so ever. Other one time events might have things in the game showing warnings or count-downs until they occur.
There is more than just Halloween coming in October…What those things are? You’ll just have to wait and see, keep an eye on our website and blog for more information in the coming weeks.
Blog post is still coming, just has been pushed out about a week, it is written and sitting in locs hands!
We found some major issues with the tournament backbone we’ve spent the last couple of weeks focused on making sure it’s 100% right before we start expanding any other functionality. We’d hate to for example start doing say…tournaments with more meaning, and suddenly have you not get rewarded, not matched up properly, etc.
We’ve almost got all that stuff ironed out, soon as we do we’ll follow up with blog posts about our plan for PvP/E-sports in the coming months.
Thanks for your patience folks and sorry for the misquote on timing. we were under the impression that stuff would get up earlier and wanted to wait until we were 100% sure we knew how it’d work after addressing the issues we found before talking about it.
Thanks everyone! Once new features start turning on, you should see them, and our E-sports support growing on a pretty rapid basis. Our goal is to be faster than the timelines of other major recent esports games like LoL after they launched in the rate at which we roll out competitive features and make sure we’ve got all the major pieces needed for long term success up and running. We know it’s very important to you, and it’s very important to us to grow and build that competitive gaming community.
Best,
Colin
All three of these features are planned, yes. It is our tradition to not discuss in detail any feature until we have it fully implemented enough that we can talk about it with confidence, as we don’t want to promise a feature to work one way and then end up having it work a different way. We’ll save details on all of those until they are ready to be talked about.
Chaplan will be putting out a blog post in the next few days that summarizes where we stand with PvP right now, and where we’re headed. From there we’ll continue to update as other Esports features come online.
Our focus right now is making sure absolutely all of the potential issues/bugs with base tournaments and rewards are 100% cleaned up before we introduce any form of more serious competition. We’re also trying to make sure we’ve given enough time for the base strategies to develop, and for any skills/builds that are out of balance are identified. Once we’re totally convinced things are in a solid state, you’ll start seeing a roll out of major PvP esports features and we’ll get this thing going like crazy. Take this opportunity now to learn your classes, learn your builds, lockdown strategies for your teams and get ready! Once we start rolling out the esports features, it’ll build up rapidly from there.
Yeah graveyard zerg and some bosses having a few balance issues (or needing more varied skills at various health percentages so they are fun to fight for their large health pools) are absolutely things on our radar. Make sure to note specific locations/bosses when leaving feedback on the forums!
As for the question about PuG’s for explorable dungeons, we’ve said all along that explorable dungeons are intended for highly organized/skilled groups of players. That is absolutely the case
“What I would call ‘hard’ was trying to run Domain of Anguish and Mallyx with a balanced setup in the first weeks it was released. Many people called it impossible, but it was a heck lot of fun to do! Why? Because it offered veriety and fluid gameplay, quick and deadly like it should be. Not kiting a mob for 2 minutes and then walking into the next mob rinse and repeat.”
I’ll point out ironically, when we first turned on DoA back in Gw1 the posts you’re seeing in this forum from a few folks about difficulty were the exact same comments everyone had about DoA. It was “impossible, mobs were just tuned to do insane damage and have huge HP, there was no tactics to defeat DoA”, etc. I went back and read through the original DoA launch feedback and it was literally identical to the comments folks on the forums are leaving now.
We made the choice back then to stick with the difficulty, and give people time to learn how to play the dungeon better and overcome it. A few months later, people viewed it as the most fun thing in the game and totally reasonable without us changing anything.
We’ll be doing the same with the Gw2 explorable dungeons, our own internal testing teams and alpha test groups learned to beat them using a combination of player skill, synchronous builds, strong use of cross-profession combos, use of cooking/consumable buffs (these make a huge difference!) and well formed player tactics. By comparison, after having months to play the game and the time our alpha was complete, some of our better dungeon groups felt the explorable dungeons were too easy for launch, we decided not to make them any harder given the expected player skill on launch.
We’re actively monitoring every dungeon and working on balancing issues we encounter appropriately. We’ll be keeping an eye on bosses we think don’t have enough varied mechanics to warrant their large health pools and updating them over time to make them more varied/interesting fights. We’ll be monitoring, and continually tweaking/adding to dungeon rewards over time and of course balancing where we see the need. And of course, we’ll be looking at adding more dungeons as well!
All of that being said, the game is VERY new for most of our players, and I can absolutely promise with more knowledge of the game and advanced player skill, the explorable dungeons can all be overcome by being skilled groups. We’ve seen many groups do it just fine in our internal alpha test once they had time to learn how to play the game well. Just like Domain of Anguish in Gw1, it takes time and practice to learn how to overcome stuff as hard as our explorable mode dungeons, and that’s exactly the kind of players they are designed for.
If DoA was any indication, a couple months from now, many of you will likely be posting saying most of the dungeons are too easy and you need better challenges
No need to buy them, Gw2 will feature consistent free content updates and in-game events going forward. Our goal is to make it so you get more from Gw2 for free than you get from a game you pay a subscription for.
On top of a large amount of free bonus content, we will be expanding on offerings in the Black Lion Trading Company going forward, as well as be doing large-scale expansion content down the road.
We’ll cover a lot of the details on the kind of support and plans we have in place over the next month or so on the Gw2 blog and with our press partners.
We do appreciate that you’d like to buy lots of new content, but we’d prefer to give a lot of it to you for free, cause that’s what we think a responsible MMO company does!
Our WvW team will be publishing a blog post very shortly with a full update on everything related to WvW, including the schedule coming up.
I posted the answer to this same question in the WvW forum yesterday, so make sure bounce keep and keep an eye out for recent posts, your answers might be closer than you realize
We have revealed previously that someday, there will be Guild Halls in the game yes.
We’ll be publishing a blog post soon that updates the status of WvW, the rankings, timelines for splitting into longer matches, answers to FAQ’s, etc.
Hang tight, more info coming….when it’s ready!

There are indeed, titles you can earn in Gw2 much like in Gw1, you’re just going to need to search and find out what they are.
Good luck on your title hunt! =)
Each of the different explorable dungeon branches rewards you with bonus tokens at the end the FIRST time you run it each day. So if you want to run the dungeon multiple times in a day, you’re generally better rewarded for doing each of the different branches for maximum rewards.
