I use to run GS/Staff while using a phantasm build and was even pursuing Sunrise. Then I switched into a condition build which has no need for greatsword. Though I miss using it, my survivability has skyrocketed. In fact, just an hour ago, I was practically soloing the priest of Grenth for half the encounter. Still, I’m tryng to figure out how to work the greatsword back in as I was halfway to Sunrise and staff attacks just isn’t as visually appealing as GS.

The first thing you need to do is stay calm. They are trying to make you panic. If you refuse to play by their rules, the battle is half yours. One tactic I like to do is dodge roll towards the spot where they applied stealth. Sadly most I’ve fought against are simple-minded so they’ll go for backstabs. Moving to their previous position guarantees they’ll miss. After that, I keep moving, using powers that either make me invulnerable, teleport me around or aoes with conditions like blind and cripple. Eventually they burn themselves out and then they are mine.

To make matters worse for them, I main a mesmer. When thieves try playing mind games, I show them who’s the master. Try finding me when I stealth AND have 3 decoys out!

The fact that this thread has grown so much is a testament to just how legendary this bow is. As to all those fussing about not having a better bow to get…

http://www.gw2db.com/items/weapons/short-bows?filter-filter-item-type=2&filter-item-rarity=6

Even if 2/3s of the list are copies, I’d still say that’s a lot to choose from. Also, may I remind you that legendaries are NOT required. They are vanity items. They have been marketed as vanity items ever since they were introduced. If you don’t feel the bow is worth it then don’t get it. It will save you a lot of time, money, pain and heartache.

Mesmer Skill 2 when downed: BIG Problem now

in Mesmer

Crossplay.2067

I’ve already ranted about this skill before but I’ll add something here to those whom say we shouldn’t use it. Those 4 skills are meant to give us a fighting chance. If they put us in a worse predicament then they are broken, especially now since death in dungeons has a bigger penalty. There are no ifs, ands or buts about it.

I also feel that it takes too long to self rez. Some bosses have aoe attacks that center on you and can be used 3 or 4 times in the timeframe it would take to rally yourself. Since these aoes also pose a threat to anyone healing us, being downed is almost a guaranteed death sentence. They actually make party members choose between reviving us and risk their own death or letting us die and trying to complete the battle with one less. To take it a step further, there’s nothing for a player to do when they’re dead. They can’t even watch the fight from a teammate’s perspective. That leaves them with staring at their dead character while the camera slowly pans around it. How is that “fun”?

Sharper Images and Deceptive Evasion are “must haves” for condition damage builds. You want to generate clones as much as possible and you want to crit as much as possible so they’ll start stacking bleeding.

Interesting thing to note. It’s possible to stack more than 12 bleeds. The one centaur boss at the end of CM path 3 never moves. If you time your phantasms right, you can have 3 wardens on him which will constantly reflect all his shots and have a consistent 25 stacks of bleed. I just stood on the roof, without attacking, and watched him bleed to death. It’s possible that I was doing more damage than the rest of my team combined. I think you can do the same with the bomber in the first path but I haven’t tried it enough times to verify.

There is one thing you should aware off. If you don’t stack any power, you will have a hard time taking out objects. They don’t receive conditions. I hope Anet will fix that one day.

Hmm. I’m guessing the forums have run out of complaints if we have resorted to complaining about a rare bow that only 2 classes can use that fires magical unicorns.

It is a shame indeed that ANET is not allowed to have one silly, fun item in its grand arsenal. They should probably change it so that each time you fire it, a disembodied head fires out with a trail of blood while a woman screams.

Why not a rainbow arrow? It’d be perfectly OK. I could even like it in its own way. The problem is not in the rainbow itself (even though I don’t think they fit the theme, some people like them) but the fact the bow is firing a kittening unicorn! Besides that, the size of the unicorn… it’s too big.

I love it BECAUSE it’s too big and shoots unicorns! It draws attention to itself, it makes others groan and it has got to be the most humiliating thing to get killed by! What’s not to like?

I didn’t want to set any rules in stone until I at least saw an interest, however, I can see how that creates confusion so I will lay down some guidelines an lists my preferences.

This guild will be for mesmers only. I don’t care what people do or what guild they represent when on an alt but I need all mesmers in the guild to represent at all times. This ensures that the guild gains influence for skills while being as fair as possible.

I prefer all officers have mesmers as their main toon but I am willing to make exceptions for great officers.

Officers have to be willing to train new recruits but this training is only on proficient use of powers, combos and combat theory. There won’t be any, “you HAVE to play this way,” as that limits new build discoveries.

I would like people whom will help lowbie mesmers level up. We’ve all been there. That’s not something I wish on anyone.

If money permits, there will be a constant stash of purple and pink dyes in the vault. We always should look our best!

On a personal note, I would like people willing to help with legendaries. I’m not talking about giving someone 100 charged lodestones. I mean willing to run with them through FotM and CoE until they have 100.

On that note, and we have to pester the devs to give us shortbows as aoe weapons. We need more aoe and nothing is as more satisfying then killing with butterflies, unicorns and rainbows! I can’t state that enough!

I’ve actually been looking around for an all mesmer guild. Granted I’ve only done a preliminary search but the results yielded nothing. The best was a mesmer meetup but that’s not a dedicated guild. Even if there are already 2 mesmer guilds, with as many players as this game has, there is more than enough room for a third. The fact that I’m having trouble even finding another speaks volumes about the matter.

Trying to find a good home server has become an issue as well. Lots of people like where they are and now that transfers have a fee, even those that don’t are hesitant to change. It can be avoided with the loss of playing WvW, which is nothing major in my opinion, but that also divides up the guild experience and treasure trove across several servers. I have no idea how to fix that. Even if servers leaders are appointed and well-maintained, anyone on a server with few members is going to get shafted.

I’m going to try renaming the thread in hope that it garners more interest.

New Dungeon Rules

Crossplay.2067

I’m not enjoying it so much. While a proper challenge is a breath of fresh air, the change also shows a few terrible design choices. For one, aggro mechanics don’t make any sense. I did all three explorable paths in CM and there were times when I switched to melee weapons, spammed clones and practically jumped on a boss’s back in an attempt to get him off a downed teammate. He absolutely refused to acknowledge my existence.

There’s the part with the rocket cannons where my teammates and I were downed often. This I blame on us for a lack of coordination but when I was down, I tried using my 2nd ability. Even though it’s a phase retreat with a cloak and I was facing the cannons, it actually teleported me closer to them and didn’t give me the cloak! >.< Then was another time when I used the same skill, timing it so a boss’s attack should have missed. Instead it did a 90-degree turn, in midair, and hit me anyway!

And then there’s the part with all the cannons and snipers. I swear every last one of them were shooting at me, even though I was behind all my teammates and sometimes behind cliffsides when I needed to heal. This I can understand because I was very aggressive at the start of the fight but I never seemed to lose aggro! Two teammates were downed during that fight but I was downed no less than 5 times, even when I stopped attacking halfway through so I could hide and heal. In fact, my team’s lifebars barely moved when I broke line-of-sight so that tells me they were focused mainly on me.

Then the stupidest thing ever happened. I summoned an iWarden and tried to pull all the snipers towards it. Every freaking one of them popped up with “immune” status! I give props to the company that made my desk because it survived a vicious round of facefaults!

And archers that can attack WHILE blocking?! NO! Just…. NO!!

On a sidenote, I need someone from anet to explain to me how reviving an ally while no enemies are around is considered, “in combat”.

And last but not least, there’s the plague guy. Once he picks someone, he just doesn’t let up. That round was my turn. I used blink, phase retreat, nullfield and all my dodges (vigor is often on me because of my build) and he still downed me! Then as soon as I was downed, I had no less than 3 aoes spawn right on top of me. My team didn’t even have time to get close. Worst part about it all is he dropped absolutely nothing.

Don’t get me wrong. I actually like the waypoint change as it promotes more skill and adds tension to battles but there is a dire need for related systems to change to accommodate. First, we need a way to properly manipulate aggro so we can draw fire away from teammates that are downed. Second, if we are considered exploiting if we get free hits on bosses then there should NEVER be a situation where bosses can hit us and we can’t do jack about it. Either allow us to knock that boss out of deathshroud or the opportunity to stop him from entering it. For now, it would be a blessing to at least take his ridiculous speed buff away! If you won’t let us damage him for 10 seconds then running should be valid and encouraged option. Third, downed skills need to work right, period! When I blink, in air projectiles shouldn’t be able to follow. And if you won’t let me choose where I blink to then at least put me full range away from the enemies attacking me. Fourth, every single boss should drop a reward, especially main bosses. Fifth, block or attack, not both! Finally, what’s the point of having knockback and knockdown powers if, late game, everyone and their momma has stability?! That is booty! That is pure, hot, wet, nasty, stinking, standing-up-in-the-middle-of-the-road booty!

Exhales hard Okay, my rant is over. I feel better now.

You guys have to remember that you’re not the only ones that get these dailies. New players get them too and, let’s face it, there are some people whom have been hre since launch and still need to know when to dodge.

I found wergs and wolves were pretty easy to do this with. The moment you run into melee range, they attack you. If you time it right, you can get past them and won’t even slow down. Giant wurms that shoot rocks have extremely easy tells. You can stand there and dodge them all day. There’s also dredge with their tremor attacks, which you can literally see coming.

Condition damage is not as strong as power and long range weapons are weaker than melee ones. if you really wan tot see condition damage shine, you have to wait until you can get the Sharper Images trait and stack precision. Incidentally, condition damage is better for fighting mobs considerably higher than you. While normal attacks will score glancing blows (meaning they’ll be 50% of their normal damage) condition damage will still take it’s full effect.

The greatsword is good for a power build which is why I recommend it for starting with. Try to keep your distance when using it as the further you are, the more damage the auto-attack does. If enemies come closer, the staff is a good weapon to switch to. While it does less damage, it gives enemies debuffs while giving you might and fury, I think. If you’re good at dodging 1hand sword is even better. It will allow you to get in an enemy’s face and while using #2, you are invulnerable for 2 seconds. When properly timed, it’s better than blocking.

I’ve been part of an impromptu group that did this in Lion’s Arch on Tarnish Coast. We actually had enough dps to kill training dummies. The warrior that was within melee range of it had 25 consistent stacks of might. I can only imagine the length of fury. And there is nothing scarier than seeing 15+ mesmers shatter at the same time!

I and many other have shared similar ideas. That’s why we have started the guild, Dopplegankers. Right now there are very few of us and I let things slip because I was working on a new build. However, since we have guesting now, it’s time I went into recruitment overdrive! So far, the only rules are you have to be a mesmer and you have to represent the guild as said mesmer. I don’t care what you do on your other toons.

After the ball gets rolling, I plan on all mesmer dungeon runs maybe a few pvp bouts. We can also screw with everyone’s head in the mist wars. Can you imagine what an enemy zerg will think when they see 15+ portals in their path?

I too have had the portal express thought. I’m still trying to find out what the range is but to move a our zerg completely across the map in seconds could easily turn the tide of any battle.

Anyway, you can see my account name here. If you’re interested, send me an email in game. Let’s get this party started!

Thinking of making a mesmer.

in Mesmer

Posted by: Crossplay.2067

Crossplay.2067

So I’m thinking on making a mesmer but unsure what they are really like, I seen a live stream of someone using it and he had full critical on. He was doing massive direct damage, I just want to know your thoughts on what this class is like?

Mesmers are mostly about finding traits you like and linking them together. Because you don’t even get traits until level 11, it starts off very slow. Things open up at level 40 when you can use master traits. Deceptive Evasion is a must have if you ever plan on spamming clones. Anything that lowers the cooldowns for illusions and weapons are great for that too.

This isn’t an easy class to play. You really have to learn when to dodge and what hits to take so you can save your endurance. Your in-battle mobility can be quite high but out-of-battle mobility is lacking, to say the least. If you plan on keeping up with a zerg, you’ll have to use a focus and blink. Sometimes even that isn’t enough because the swiftness from focus doesn’t refresh other swiftness buffs.

The biggest thing is, you’ll have to adopt a mesmer mindset. A lot of powers have “good for me, bad for you,” setups so you’ll need to learn when to use them so you can take advantage of both aspects. For instance, Chaos Storm gives random boons to allies and random conditions to enemies while damaging them. I’ve seen a lot of mesmers focus solely on the damage aspect of it but it is best used when you are close enough to your opponent to cast it over both of you.

If you’re looking to do ridiculous dps or a lot of aoe damage, you’re in the wrong profession. Mesmers are more about disrupting how your opponents think and fight. We have a lot of combo fields, condition-adders, projectile reflection, stealths, in-battle movement powers and we are the best at stacking confusion. Learn them all and then learn to abuse them.

Oh, and you will be expected to have portal. Handle that however you wish.

Last, we have been beaten repeatedly by the nerf bat as devs are under the impression that the class is too powerful. Every patch comes with more nerfs and I shudder to think of the coming one. Some contribute this to other classes whining on pvp forums about how hard it is to kill a mesmer or how some of our abilities are overpowered. Others say they just don’t understand how much work and preparation it takes to do those things. Not many people play mesmers to level 80 so not many understand what it takes to make the class dominate. Also, by design, we are SUPPOSE to be frustrating to deal with! Let us hope that, one day, the devs remember that.

Oh, and we are divas! If you join our ranks, you are expected to wear high-fashon, vastly impractical outfits with lots of ruffles and lace! You will learn to love fuchsia, lavender and butterflies! You are required to be a haughty, pompous jerk whom gets into everyone’s head and under their skin just for the sheer joy of it! If you can’t do that then you are not worthy.

Easiest, most cost-effective way to level?

in Players Helping Players

Crossplay.2067

One way I use to level up my warrior is skillpoint hunting. You go into every zone and just go for the skillpoints. They are easily seen on the map, even in areas you haven’t uncovered yet and they are often a great way of testing how well you handle overwhelming odds. The xp gain is pretty nice too.

As for crafting, I think cooking is the cheapest one if you grind particular recipes in stacks of 25 instead of doing all the discoveries. The items you buy with karma are actually some of the cheapest things I’ve ever bought. There are 2 downsides though. many dishes can’t be sold, not even to npcs and some ingredients require you to fill a renown heart before you can buy from that npc.

Dungeon point system

in Suggestions

Posted by: Crossplay.2067

Crossplay.2067

This isn’t my idea. I was watching Tales of Tyria and they mentioned this concept. I’m just improving on their idea.

The problem with dungeons now is that they are a tedious way of grinding for gold, tokens and loot. Also, because so many enemies have high hp and low drop rates, they are commonly skipped because it’s usually not worth the effort to deal with them. Those are issues that lead to finding exploits and a more general consensus that using them is okay.

All this can be fixed with a dungeon point system. The basic concept behind it is, just about everything you do in a dungeon will grant you points. For example let’s say that dodging at the right time netted you 2 points. That 2 points will be added to your personal score and the overall party score. Other things that would give points is healing, removing conditions and buffing allies, giving conditions and stripping boons from enemies, interrupting attacks, disabling traps, combing attacks, reviving allies and so on. Of course some things like combos should give more points and combos involving more than one party member get an even greater amount. In this manner, playing well and cooperating well will you a higher score. On the other hand, skipping content will cause potential point loss.

I will add that time to completion should be left out completely as the only thing it will encourage are speedruns. That gets enough encouragement on its own.

At the end of the dungeon, these points will be tallied for each player by adding their personal score with the overall group score. The end result will affect how much karma, dungeon tokens and gold they gain. However, if they reach particular milestones, it will affect the choices of the 4th drop.

The 4th will be a choice between armor, a weapon, crafting materials or upgrade components. If the player did poorly, they’ll get white quality choices. While these will have the skins of the dungeon, they’ll have the stats of similar quality items. The quality will become higher and higher until they reach rare, in which case they’ll be able to choose from dungeon specific items sold by dungeon vendors. At the exotic level, they’ll get the best items that dungeon can offer, with the exception of fractals, which is according to the best the fractal level can offer.

I feel this system will encourage players to cooperate more as it benefits the individual and the party as a whole. They are also less likely to skip content because that will lower their overall score. I can see using exploits may actively be discouraged because not dodging boss attacks, having no reason to heal or running past groups of enemies will only lower the overall score. Not to mention high scores are bragging rights.

Naturally there will have to be checks and balances to ensure the score system can’t be abused easily. My first thought is a group of people dodging boss attacks until they reach exotic level. A way to handle that is to give bonus points at the end for achievements like never being downed or defeated, which would be a lot faster to gain than dodging for an hour. Care should be taken to anything that could potential put party members in rivalries that are detrimental to the overall party performance. In addition to that, this system has to be designed so that it’s more beneficial to play dungeons similar to the way they were designed than to rush to the last boss and grab the tokens.

And now I’m going to do my best to encourage critical thinking. I know there are going to be naysayers but, before you just type, “that’s stupid and never going to work,” I want you guys to give me detailed reasons as to why you think it won’t. Those reasons need to be backed up by hard facts. For instance, if you say, “90% of players are going to do things this way,” I need you to show me at least two examples where 9 out of 10 people did so. However, if you say, “I don’t like it because of this,” that will hold a lot more weight because it shows your personal opinion.

For everyone else, if you have something to add to it then, by all means, do so. I’ve already added my 2 cents and would love to see yours as well.

When to Salvage

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Crossplay.2067

Crossplay.2067

For whites, I always check the trading post. Sometimes they have offers for 1 to 2 silver. Those that don’t sell are salvaged.

I also check the TP for greens and blues. If I make the same amount of profit or lower from selling to a vender, I sell to a vender. This is my small way of increasing the value of these items by lowering the supply.

For yellows, I always sell to the tp because I HATE the RNG with a vengeance. They usually sell for 20 to 32 silver and I’d rather use that to buy ectos than salvage and hope I get one. I’ve never been lucky enough to make salvaging them profitable.

For oranges, I always check to see how much the runes and sigils sell for first. Sometimes they are worth twice as much as selling the item intact would be. If that’s the case, I salvage, bank the ectos and sell the rune/sigil.

As for salvage kits, I always use Mystic Forge for common things, even whites, because they come in stacks of 250. I run dungeons a lot so bag space is far more important to me than saving a few silver from having multiple kits. For orange items that I want the rune/sigil from, I use Black Lion kits because they guarantee that I will get it.

You can also share tapestries among alts. So just make a few alts, take them to the hall, do that very 1st mission inside with Gwen, bam another tapestry. Put it in your bank (its also shared among all characters like gw2) give it to the main character who will be getting the HoM points and you are good to go.

That would require me playing another character up to the Hall of Monuments. That isn’t a viable option because, as I’ve stated before, I really, really hate the game. I hate it even more now because lag spikes have caused me to die once. I went from half life to 0 in 1.5 seconds that i couldn’t control my character. Luckily the enemies decided to kill me first instead of my monk, otherwise that would have been a party wipe.

I’m amazed that no one ever mentioned the tapestries. That has added to my frustration. I have to play through more missions ot get the others and I already fell asleep 2 or 3 times just getting to Kaineng. If I wasn’t such a diva, I’d swear this wasn’t worth it!

Luckily I already had a pet so I was able to get a free point. Now I just need more more as I don’t really care for the helm. Anyone willing to part with a rare pet so I can be done with this?

Human and Norn Romance?

I think you guys are overlooking an aspect. It’s possible that Norns may find humans “cute” because they are so much smaller. I seriously doubt every single Norn wants to get hot and happy with the hero type. In fact, some may prefer someone who isn’t larger than life just because it’s different. There’s also the idea that humans are familiar yet exotic and that has its own level of attraction.

Q: How easy it will be to determine the gender of Asura characters? Do female Asura have breasts?

Eric: Asura are mammals and female asura do have mammary glands, however they are not particularly prominent the way they are in humans or norn. For the sake of physical attraction, asura place much more importance on the ears, eyes, and shape of the head (larger head equals larger cranial capacity of course!) than anything else. As for telling the genders apart, female asura tend to have much softer and fine features than males and wear their hair differently.

/thread, everybody go home. And you, Yollm, you get a medal for finding this, it’ll help me a great deal with the roleplay guide.

I totally nailed it! Go me!

There’s one fact that you guys are grievously overlooking: Asura are not human. Some comparisons can be made due to similarities but you also have to acknowledge that they are radically different from humans so it’s highly likely that they grow and have evolved in a radically different way.

For instance, females may still have mammary glands but they just don’t protrude from their chests like human females do. One theory is they may have evolved to sunk into their chest cavity instead as living in caves and often ride inside of golems would make protrusions of any kind a hindrance. Also, the mammary glands wouldn’t need to be anywhere near as big as a human because the Asura are so small. Plus, their culture clearly values intelligence than physical appearance. It’s possible that a bigger head is far more appealing than bigger breasts. That may be why they are also fixated on ears.

You also have to consider that technology is so ingrained in the Asura culture that it possibly has influenced their evolution. Consider the gates. Teleporting matter across any distance of space is still decades if not a full century ahead of our present level of understanding. We’ve just learned how to teleport energy a few years ago. However, it’s so common to the Asura that it has spread well beyond their political borders and is commercially available at a ridiculously low cost. (Well, low considering what the maintenance for it all must be.) If they’ve had such a complex level of tech just laying about everywhere, can you imagine how long they’ve been riding inside of golems? And that’s something we can practically do today. Their current size may even be to better facilitate being inside vehicles.

Anyway, the tl:dr version is, Asura aren’t human so you can’t assume that similarities run deeper than they appear.

My bad. I’m still on the beginning island in stead of the main continent. Somehow I got the names confused. I blame it on my inability to process Chinese (or Korean for all I know) names correctly and it being 4 in the morning when I tried. The question now is how do I get to Kaineng Center.

And I’m not going to even consider goldsellers. I’ve gotten enough annoying emails, private messages and chat-spam. The last thing I want to do is encourage it.

I’ll be frank. I HATE Guild Wars 1. I could go into all the reasons why this is but it’s basically whining and the forums have enough of that. That being said, I love the heritage light armor set and wish to get that for my main. So is there any way of gaining the points needed that’s faster than playing through the campaigns? I would also like to know how to get to the hall of monuments in Guild Wars 1 as I just can’t seem to find it or any useful maps for getting there. I’ve been told I would run into it eventually while playing through the campaigns but, as I’ve stated earlier, I hate the game.

Mesmer condition build, for PvE and Dungeon

Yeah and still is far less damage than just autoattacking with a bersker-gs-build. Try to get over 3k-4k damage (autoattack of berserk-mesmer ) with your spells and conditions.

What you’re looking at is burst damage. Condition damage, by nature, is attrition. All those tiny, little numbers add up quickly. If you don’t think so, stand by a poison plant in Twilight Arbor and see how long it takes for one to down you. Plus, while burst damage can be successfully be evaded because of its very short application, (which is one of the popular tactics to use against heartseeker thieves) condition damage is a lot harder to deal with because it’s constantly being reapplied by autoattacks.

The only way to do a fair comparison is damage over time.
