This is a horrible bug. I tend to mash the #1 key a lot (because auto-attack often stops for no apparent reason) and this is destroying what little sanity I had left.

I’d be totally OK with other players being able to interrupt the skill (well, sort of OK) but I definitely don’t want to be able to self-interrupt it.

I ran around a little last night murdering everything I came across and my damage was way, way, way up. I didn’t particularly feel any lack of Swiftness when I wanted it, but the lack of a charge is a real problem for me.

I might try Bull’s Charge instead of On My Mark. I like the vulnerability from On My Mark, but having a leap (especially a leap that knocks down my enemy and either makes him burn a skill to get back up or take damage while waiting it out) seems necessary to me. The refresh on Bull’s Charge is like 40 seconds, though, so it might not be worth it. We don’t have any other leap abilities, do we?

The only other alternative would be to use a weapon with a leap as my backup weapon set but then I’d a) have to switch and b) lose my range option so that is something of a non-starter.

It won’t let me edit my post for some reason, but I thought I’d add a note that I did a quick test and with 20 points in Tactics and a +15% Swiftness Duration rune it is still very easy to stack swiftness to the point where you essentially have it permanently (at 4 minutes of banked swiftness I stopped spamming the buttons).

I’ve been contemplating a similar change. I’ve also been using the Yojack build, but I want to do more damage in some situations so I’m trying out an Axe/Warhorn build in Berserker’s gear.

When it comes to traits, I did things a little differently than you though:

I did 20 in Strength, with the majors of Berserker’s Power and Axe Mastery.

I did 10 in Arms, but went with Rending Strikes instead of Deep Cuts (since I won’t be applying any bleeds with an axe).

I did 10 in Defense, but I’m thinking of using Turtle’s Defense instead of Embrace The Pain — it really depends on how much adrenelaine Embrace The Pain gives. If its huge, I’ll use that. If its minimal, I’d probably prefer being tougher when loaded with conditions.

Instead of 30 in Tactics, I went with 20. I don’t care much about Reviver’s Might or Vigorous Shouts due to the total lack of healing on my gear and the minimal healing you get out of the shouts. I can make up the lost 10% swiftness duration either through gear, or I can live without it in this configuration. I find that having swiftness constantly is nice, but not necessarily essential. I need to try it out and see how well I can keep swiftness up.

I put my last 10 points into Discipline, choosing Heightened Focus as the major so that I could get a boost to crit-chance.

I’m stuck on mobility though. I really miss the leap with the sword because I’m so SLOW moving. I don’t want to give up a utility to add a charge, but seriously… I really need a charge ability of some sort because this is driving me crazy.

There is a trait in the discipline line called “Sweet Vengeance” that gives you a 100% chance to rally if you kill an opponent during Vengeance.

Well, the Rampager’s gear is power/precision/condition damage. For a sword build (which applies bleeds) it was my understanding that it would be ideal because the power would increase your attack, the precision would increase your crit rate, and the condition damage would help the bleeds.

With Berserker’s, I’d be sacrificing the condition damage (which might be fine) and replacing it with critical damage. The trading post seems to be broken, but at a guess it looks like I could increase my crit damage by 18% on gear, and 15% on trinkets for a total of 33% or so. That sound about right?

As for the rifle damage, Volley and Kill Shot tend to hit for around 4k max for me.

EDIT: With my current gear, my unbuffed stats are:
Power=1487
Precision = 1957
Toughness = 1166
Vitality = 1231
Attack = 2328
Crit Change = 54%
Armor = 2161
Health = 21522

Hi,

My damage doesn’t seem anywhere close to what people on the forums are saying they get as a warrior and I just don’t understand why. I’m sure I’m doing something wrong, but it isn’t clear to me what that might be. Is it gear? Is it traits? Is it wrong utility skills? I’d like to be the best warrior I can be. I’m just not seeing the 1k (or 2k on crit) hits that people are talking about. Thoughts? My current build is below.

Armour:
All level 80. Rampager’s reinforced scale <whatever>.
Accessories: Coral Mithril Earring of the Rampager x 2
Rings: Coral Mithril Ring of the Rampager x 2
Amulet: Coral Mithril Amulet of the Rampager
My runes are not ideal (4xmajor sigil of the pack, 2 x minor rune of lyssa). Pretty sure I want 6 x Superior rune of <something> but not matter what I end up with it won’t make -that- much of a difference, will it?

Utilities:
For Great Justice
On My Mark
Shake It Off
Signet of Rage

Traits:
0 in strength
25 in arms (major=deep cuts, blademaster)
15 in defense (major=turtle defense)
30 in tactics (major=empowered, quick breating, vigorous shouts)
0 in discipline

Weapon Set 1: Rampager’s Sword of Battle (level 80, 802-866) + Warhorn
Sigils: Major sigil of battle, superior sigil of accuracy

Weapon Set 2: Rampager’s Rifle of Corruption (level 80, 873 – 1067
Sigil: Major sigil of corruption

With set #1, a typical fight looks like this (with signet of rage fired, and after using For Great Justice):
652, 624, 1320 – 665, 663, 1387 – 623, 655, 1420 – 627 [mob-dead]

With set #2, a typical fight looks like this (as above, and opening with brutal shot):
553 (brutal shot), 449, 478 (auto-attack), 697, 465, 697, 697, 465 (volley), 521, 358, 375 (auto-attack) [mob-dead]

So… what am I doing wrong?

Um, it would be physically impossible to swing a greatsword in the manner that the characters in this game do. I wouldn’t base suggestions on reality.

That said, the range in general is too short for both. It should really be upped to 180 or even 200 across the board.

I am hopnig somone here in this thread can help me map out a quick route to lvl 80 as a warrior.

There is no need to rush to 80 — in fact, if you do, you’ll be doing yourself a dis-service. As for what to do, in general you should do whatever you find enjoyable but specifically you can zoom the map out and you’ll see each section labeled with the level range intended for that area; just pick one that you fit into and go. I would personally suggest avoiding dungeons until you’re comfortable with the idea of repeated, painful death. I haven’t done WvWvW or PvP yet (and I’ve been 80 for a little while) but I would think that of the two WvWvW would be the most interesting experience. Unless your server is like mine, anyway, where one of the worlds controls 99% of the map and the other two have < 1%.

Don’t forget tradeskills, by the way. You can -easily- get quite a few levels just by working up your tradeskills. I’m pretty sure I got at least 10 levels just doing my cooking and armoursmithing.

I’m not a Greatsword user, but the point of a burst ability is to to a lot of damage “right now”. If it helps, consider the length of time the burst ability runs and then compare the damage done over that time to the damage done by your auto-attack over the same period of time. The burst ability will (clearly) have higher damage in that very short window of time — which is the point.

c) anything that IS souldbound should be shown completely in red if it isn’t bound to the character looking at it — it isn’t like you could do anything with it anyway, so why not make it obvious?

Quick Breathing seems to work; conditions are definitely being converted into boons. I think that the bug that people are reporting is that SOME conditions don’t get converted because they are being removed by the ability first (so instead of a removal and a conversion, you get a removal only).

One more note; condition damage is nice, but I wouldn’t focus on it unless you were sure you were going to be doing PvE only. In PvP, removing bleeds is very easy (one condition removal removes the whole stack) so you won’t do very well in that situation. Since criticals are instant damage, they can’t be removed and they are fight-changing (ie: making people burn their heals). I think you -also- want condition damage, but I don’t think it should be your focus necessarily.

Well, you said that you have a fairly low crit-chance and you indicated that you also like to use condition damage, so my recommendations would be:

1) “Rampager’s” armour offers power/precision/condition damage. Those 3 seem to fit in well with your preferred style.

2) For rings/earrings/amulet, “Coral Mithril” offers the same benefits.

3) For sigils, you can get an easy (and cheap) 5% crit-chance bonus by equiping a “Major Sigil of Accuracy”.

4) For armour runes, the picture is less clear and probably depends on what you want to achieve. I’m no expert, but I think you need to look at the "superior’ level of the rune set to really determine where you want to go. For example, the “of the soldier” set offers “shouts remove a condition” at the sixth level, which for my personal build (which is really 99% Yojack’s build, technically) is a pretty big deal. If endurance regen is an issue, you could use the “of the adventurer” set. If your primarily hunting dragons, there is the “of the traveler” set (though this will be useless for everything EXCEPT hunting dragons likely).

You can use the auction house to lookup and research items.

Bear in mind, there isn’t really one “right” answer. It depends on your playstyle. You may prefer to use two sets of runes and only get the first 3 benefits from each (or something) if that fits your playstyle.

This build fit in well with the weapon selections I had already made (sword/warhorn + rifle) and I used it to level right from the get-go.

Was it ideal? Probably not. The easiest path would have been greatsword + 5 sigils, I’m sure, but I wanted to learn the profession the way I would need to play it in WvWvW or PvP (when I eventually get around to that).

That meant making mobility second nature; it meant learning when to swap weapon sets, when to melee up close, when to stand back and use ranged weapons, when to convert conditions to boons, when to clear conditions… in short, it meant having fun. The easy-button has no appeal for me.

As for the build itself, I recently switched from Blademaster to Crack Shot because for ME (in my personal gaming scenario) I find hitting multiple targets with my rifle more useful than the extra 10% crit-chance. I’m exclusively doing PvE, though, where the enemies are pretty easy to line up for multiple hits. I think in PvP you’d rarely find players dumb enough to conveniently line up for you. Maybe in WvWvW, though, where there are just naturally swarms of people and things are more chaotic.

One word of warning, though — you WILL get used to always moving with swiftness. Once that happens, you’ll pretty much refuse to switch back because everything will feel painfully slow to you.

There are two truths that apply to my character in GW2:

1) I’m poor.

2) I’m also very bland looking.

One of those things I’m hoping can be rectified; are there any stylish/interesting looking armour sets available either for karma (at a reasonable rate; I have ~30k karma — not 250k) or for silver.

My character is an Asuran Warrior.

I don’t actually care about the statistics of the armour (my rampager’s armour is fine) since I’d just want to transmute my current set to look like the new set.

Large event confusion...

Deria.9158

I’m not sure if this is the right forum, but my comment is very general so I thought it worth a try to post here.

Tonight I did a large-scale dynamic event (The Shatterer).

The Good: Impressive looking monster.

The Bad: During the event, I could not tell AT ALL if I was having any impact whatsoever in the fight. My skills were firing only intermittently, and the numbers were only showing up on screen once in a while. I thought perhaps I was just not seeing them amidst the chaos, so I looked at the combat log window and it was showing nothing as well. It showed my -incoming- damage (ie: to me) but none of my outgoing damage.

Is it lag? Are other players having similar problems, or am I just flat-out doing something wrong? I still got gold, so I assume my damage must have been registering on some level but it was very confusing.

(Also, as a more general question, the dragon seemed to have like 10 targeting indicators on him. Whats up with that? Are you supposed to aim at specific targets or is that just so that you can tab-target easily even from a different side of the dragon? The event itself didn’t provide any real guidance. I come from an EverQuest background where large events are essentially the opposite of zerg and events have specific mechanics that you need to follow in order to be successful and the event itself usually has a storyline-style progression.)

Overall it was fun, but oh so very confusing.

I have no objection to a Linux client, but people in this thread are making some terrible assumptions:

1) OS X is not Linux. It is BSD Unix. Similar, yes. The same, no.

2) Someone described Windows as “terrible” for game developers. The opposite could not possibly be more true. DirectX is VERY GOOD. Speaking as a programmer who has used it, I can say with certainty that it is extremely easy to use and works well. OpenGL is also very good, don’t get me wrong. People need to stop wearing blinders, though. Whether you love or hate Microsoft, you have to admit that they pushed the gaming market -massively- forward with DirectX and continue to do so.

3) Implementing a Mac client makes much more sense than implementing a Linux client. Sorry, but the reality is there are many more Mac users than Linux users in the gaming market. Linux is great, and I love it, but the number of gamers using Linux full-time is minimal. I’d be happy to see ArenaNet implement a Linux client, but the idea that they should have done that before a Mac client is unreasonable.

Deria.9158

Well, if you’d like some concrete advice:

1) Turn off the double-tap to evade option in the menus when you are working on vistas. Accidentally doing a forward roll off a cliff is, while hilarious, not productive.

2) Learn the mechanics of jumping — sounds silly to say, but really there is a mechanic here. You can press the jump key and THEN the direction key and you’ll jump just as far/high as if you had pressed the keys in the opposite order. Realizing this will prevent you from annoyingly running off ledges when you meant to do a jump. Also, if you are on Asura or other small race, make a note of the fact that you can -appear- to be standing in thin air when in reality your characters hit-box is firmly grounded. Not realizing how far forward you can move leads to a lot of shortfalls when you jump.

3) Change your keys. I don’t use the standard wasdqe (or whatever it is) keyboard control layout. I hate it. I use w + mouselook for 99% of my needs, and occassionally a and d to strafe. In PvE that is fine. In PvP I’ll probably get owned by some circle-strafing teenager that can press 30-buttons at once but I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it.

4) Use obstacles to help with your jumps. If there is a post sticking out of the wall and you want to land on the post, aim for the part of the post closest to the wall so that if your jump goes a little too far you stop and fall onto your target instead of jumping right past it.

5) Understand that it isn’t a race. You don’t get a prize for completing the vista faster than others — so if someone comes up behind you, let them pass.

Not sure if this helps you out or not, but hopefully it does.

Actually, funny you should say that. I was really struggling with a vista a couple of weeks ago in one of the zones — I simply couldn’t find a way to get where I knew I needed to be. So anyway, after much frustrating searching, I saw someone up there and I sent a whisper asking them how they got up there. Much to my surprise, the person came down and showed me -exactly- how she got up there. I was actually a little stunned. Anyway, the point is, the vistas are not necessarily solo. When my friends and I are playing, we also help eachother out (or laugh at eachothers missed jumps and deaths, more often).

I would like to see smarter PvE enemies. I agree that making all enemies smarter would be demanding from a server resource point of view, but bosses/champions/veterans would benefit from this mechanic. After all, they became bosses/champions/veterans for a reason, didn’t they?

It would also help people learn how to prepare for PvP having some enemies that fought a little more like players.

At a minimum, PvE enemies should stun break and move out of the area of AEs (at least sometimes) if they are humanoid (ie: intelligent). Animal enemies should start the fight with a ferocity buff and have a chance to flee when they detect things aren’t going their way.

Why do warriors suck so much?

Deria.9158

I played a necromancer before I switched to warrior. Let me tell you with complete honesty; the warrior is MUCH stronger than the necromancer (by far). I can’t claim to be an expert, yet, but so far I definitely don’t feel weak and as I get more and more traits I feel stronger all the time.

On the surface, the warrior profession seems straight-forward but it is deceptive. If you look carefully, and apply your traits correctly, you can achieve a number of different effective playstyles. A greatsword-warrior is pretty easy to counter (unless you are asleep) but most of the other builds are harder to deal with. Like any profession, though, it takes time to learn and become proficient.

I personally use sword/warhorn + rifle and I find it great fun. People are using hammer builds effectively too, though. People are using dual-axe builds successfully. At range, the longbow (ae) and the rifle (single-target) are both solid.

I won’t say warriors are the most powerful class, but they definitely aren’t the least powerful class either.

2) Actual weapons; whip would be a good off-hand ranged weapon. I would also like to see a sword-breaker (essentially a defensive weapon that can be used to destroy your oponents weapon or twist it out of their hands).

Does warhorn damage matter at all?

in Warrior

Posted by: Deria.9158

Deria.9158

Something seems wrong to me.

It seems to me that it doesn’t really matter if I’m using a level-1 warhorn or a level 80 warhorn. Both seem to have exactly the same effect (ie: warrior warhorn skills do 0 damage, so the quality of the warhorn you use seems completely irrelevant to the effects that you get when you use the skills).

Am I missing something? Aside from statistics/sigils, it really seems like — in a game based around the idea of improving your gear over time — that there should be some benefit obtained from improving your gear.

If this really is the case, I’d like to suggest that one of the warhorn skills should be given a minor damage component or that the effects of the warhorn scale somehow with the quality of the item (either in intensity or duration). Even if the scaling is minor, it just seems fundamentally wrong at the moment.

My suggestion would be for ArenaNet to move Sweet Revenge out of Discipline and have it swap places with Reviver’s Might (a minor trait).

Explain condition stacking to me like I'm a half-wit please.

in Warrior

Posted by: Deria.9158

Deria.9158

I never played GW1, so some of the concepts in this game are new to me. One of them is condition stacking.

Using bleeding as en example, I understand that each time I strike my enemy with a skill that applies bleeding, a stack happens.

So, if I apply a bleeding condition, then apply another one 2 seconds later, and then another, and then another, the icon will show 4 stacks of bleeding.

Are these 4 separate effects all ticking away independently? It would make sense for it to be 4 separate effects, since each bleed has its own duration, but if that is the case then it seems I can only see the most recent bleed applied (by anyone) when I’m targeting the enemy. Maybe that is OK, though, based on the “more is always better” principle.

So, moving on. I understand that bleeding can stack up to 25 times. What happens when 25 is hit? Do older bleeds get replaced by newer ones? Or do lower-damage bleeds get replaced by higher damage bleeds? Or do new bleeds simply go into the void? Something else?

Can someone clarify this for me, or perhaps point me at a resource?

Please add a translucency (or intensity) option to allow the player to control the particle effects, or even outright turn them off. I can see that turning them completely off would undermine the visibility of fields, but sometimes you just need to be able to see. I think an translucency or intensity slider would work best so that the effects could be muted and/or scaled down.

That said, I’m also re-rolling. I don’t despise the class, but between the outright bugs and the un-fun fact that literally everyone else is better at everything than me (some of which is probably skill related, but not all) I’m just not enjoying the profession very much at all.

Also, one thought — this profession seems to have a steep learning curve. Things like condition damage (as a concept) are just not explained very well in game, and to be successful with this profession it seems like you need to understand the whole “draw conditions onto yourself and then foist them off onto your opponents and then spread them to other oppoenents” mechanic — and that’s FAR from obvious.

I don’t -think- I’m a simpleton, but either I am or this profession has some fairly serious problems.
