Hey so i’v just started my first alt, Ranger.

So far iv been using Gs with sword/warhorn with traps, Finding it really smooth and liking those fire shields.

Would like some advise on where to go from here as i leveling. as i like the game play style is it ok to keep playing this way or will i get downed like a hooker in high lvl zones.

also since i dont know ranger traits where should i put them? i like damage and i dont mind being a little weak due to that.

yeah going to have to agree with blasino. But yeah you use SYG ect no i do cange from medi traits to shouts but full zerker gardian is fine. Pugs gotta remember you will get more bad than good.
full zerker doesn’t mean GS, i use mace focus but sword focus works 3 blinds with that. scepter/torch play smart

Atm i run my guardian with full zerker and trait for meditations and its very powerful however while lvl’ing you can trait the same way but id use shouts and change out MF for Ah(but you cant trait them at lvl 50 anyway), but yeah i think you will find 10/15/20( not sure hot many points you have) using shouts a lot better.

yeah i plus 1 this, also PvP doesn’t offer the stat combos of PvE. So many possible builds just cant be made in PvP.

high lvl fotm build, prob needed. but i ran full dps zerker one handed build yesterday for fotm 48 and only died twice. done water that giant one and charr fractals. team consisted of 2 wars ele thief and myself.

Pairing Scepter with Shield is a better idea, because being ranged/back line gives you a much better opportunity to apply protection to your teammates via shield 4’s cone. There is no DPS advantage to using Torch 5, in fact it is a net loss due to the time it takes to channel. If you want to clear teammates conditions, consider focus instead.

Sorry but that is wrong. The damage from torch 5 is 100% better than using an auto attack. High dps means no down time in attack, torch 5 will keep your dps up and saying take focus over torch when i stated i was using both. pay attention.

its always hard to help people with builds as sometime you simply like somethings because you do. But ill start with saying i tend not to try and bring to many boons to my build as they come hand in hand with playing guardian. I am using a one handed build atm with mace/focus and scepter/torch swapping in sword for mace when doing easy stuff like cof. traits 10/30/30/0/0 working on anything to increase damage. if you go with this i hope you have as fun as i do with it,

Mace with focus puts out the most damage to protection than any other weapon set in dungeon. support that with sword/torch or scepter/torch and you got a winner.

Instead of adding a DPS meter, they could just simply bring back the Master of Damage (http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Master_of_damage). They could put him in the Hall of Monuments if getting attacked by multiple people wouldn’t work, or they could just put him in the mists.

Not to mention testing with foods oils etc, i want to see what pvt armor with ruby orbs and zerker rings etc plus zerker weapons and oils and saffron ice cream gives me. i will prob do ahead and just do this but it would be nice to not have to risk it. Like my healing power set ended up just a salvage.

I think it would be good if the game had a preview build option. Where we can put together our armor sets/rings etc and see the outcome of out total stats. Including traits. Yes i know we have websites but the ones i seen around are not great. they are also theoretical on what is actual going to show up in game.

now i know some people will say no the website are great and all but, no they are not.
All props to the people who put them together. I know its hard work.

Foofad i understand and agree with a lot of what you are saying. We need to remember that play style comes into all this. example i use mace/focus with Scepter torch. yet neither one set is my main i try and flick them every 12 seconds and i see a lot people using the one weapon so i know they are wasting dps waiting on skills on CD.
You are also right about the GS however only Arah really has a lot of mobs. CoF, CoE, SE TA(kind of) HotW not really any real mobs to talk of. So this si part of the reason i changed from GS DPS.
I don’t think we need to talk about scepter needing fixing.
Protector’s strike on the mace i do need to get a little better at timing the skill however that doesn’t affect the build.
hmm yeah i was just thinking today while playing the torch 5 skill duration does effect the quality of the damage. Ever more then the top end crits are below 9k.

Make your armor full Pvt with VT Runes( or rune of the wurm), Get full zerker rings etc then get superior sigil of life on both weapons set then use the food Bowl of Saffron-mango ice cream. This will give you 20k hp 3k armor around 3.2k attack and if you use zerker stats on weapons 40% crit chance with 60% crit dmg you can trait however you like here as your stats will match anything you want. Defensive stats do not scale well and you really notice that in scaled down dungeons.
I use to love boon duration but then after playing more without it i noticed that boons never stop coming everyone gives them to trying to keep them up is kind of a waste. IMO i would trait for dmg using meditations to get my extra healing. Traits 10/30/30, Zeal II Radiance III Vi Xi valor I VII XII.

Done some test in Cursed shore, with no foods,buffs,bloodlust or pre stacked might.

Mace auto hits for 1.5-3.3k symbol of faith ticks at 1-2.2k(along with giving you regen). Smite condition heals for 1899k and hits for over 3k everytime. protector;s strike is up and down 2.5k-6k crazy range.

Scepter auto is 1.8k avg. Smite 700-1k

Torch Zealot’s flame active 3-4.7k, Cleansing flame(hard to judge) ticks range frim 800-3k.

All these numbers taking from combat log and all from same type of foe. Remember when looking at these numbers they are with no buffs,foods,bloodlust or pre stacked might.

Hey yeah i agree with most of what you said.i think focus is a better match for the mace in this build over shield on my build blocks stack might and with meditation i can take the little extra dmg. hmm the burst damage with scepter torch using skills 4-4(active),3,2,5 in that order is very high. tested in Arah tonight and torch 5 was criting fot almost 12k while smite was still up,

all in all after running Arah and SE p2 tonight i see this weapon combo and set up being high dps(for guardians) and having strong survivability.
I use smite condition, contemplation of purity and Judge’s intervention so you could choose to use Shelter or signet or resolve atm im using signet. but shelter and another block so this will help with dps getting the might from the blocks, up to you. same with Renewed focus.

Really happy atm. Finding myself dead less than when i ran 2-handed build.

Why does Tazza not drop look and not have a final chest. I’m not saying it needs both of these, However yes she should either drop loot and spawn a chest after all she is the final boss for the path.

Yeah im using the meditation for the healing. With monks focus its something like 1.2k each time you use one. So with smite condition on that 1.2k hp with 800+ damage and a conditation removed everything 16 secs.

being able to stack more might would be great and i did use it on my GS dps build however i am looking for something different something a little more easily sub-stained dps.

Hey this thread is for advise. I want to play a DPS one handed build. I do not like sword. atm im using mace/Focus with scepter/torch(some people might remember my post about scepter. please keep in mind i started that about using it as main).
Traits are : Zeal II, Radiance II VI XI and Valor I VII XII
i can already see the damage does not scratch that of the GS(from what i’v seen so far)

SotA is the most common used end game, coming in most useful in FotM. but i agree maybe if you wanted to use them in a DPs build for like 100% burn time on foe’s so you always get the +10% damage. but yeah i agree with you

Maybe we as players can become trainers as like a commander , a PvE title we can buy the rights to be trainers.

and charge a percent out of each player who changes? (just kidding)
Ths idea would still take time. A button that memorizes stats and gear is better.

i should explain myself better, yeah we get to save a 2nd trait tree at the cost of 50g or a 3rd at 100g etc and to help the other that can not afford that we are also trainers. sorry

What kind of damage on crits is high for guardian, i do not run full glass cannon armor but use about 80% zerker, with my best being around 18.5k but avg high damage on crits are 10-12k.

best Dps can only be obtained by not downing. Also anything single target build(Sword) you will almost be using in any dungeon untill a boss fight.

You could always use a consecrations with ground targeting(trait option in Virtues). with sanctuary you would only use it to res downed players. Hallowed ground offers not just a longer stability than the shout but its also a fire combo field allowing your team to do more dmg and last of you can use Wall of Reflection or Purging Flames depending on where you are. This will also mean you don’t need full cleric’s gear. Just clerics on armor and weapons with Superior sigil of life. Allowing you to use what ever extra stats you want on rings etc,

Yeah i agree, a hard to obtain almost legendary like armor would be great. However i still think it should come from tokens, maybe add more to fractals and make it like 100 prestige relics etc, So i guess this would make Ascended armor.

Just from personal experience here (take some salt grains here), but I’ve seen some Guardians that main a scepter that could embarrass anyone using any other weapon.

You need to explain more here. What have you seen? a scepter main being last man alive kiting around for an hour and killing a boss? like this is what we are talking about. If that guys spent more time with a mace/shield eg, Maybe his team wouldn’t wiped.

Why are people talking Torch? i started this thread to get other guardians like Lightrayne.7829 to say yes people scepter is bad(99% of the time). i know Anet put it in so new player could get use to the game and learn how fights worked(Yes i did this also). I just want to encourage players to say “Hey i’m a melee class and that its how i will learn to play to benefit my team”. If it dungeon dps you want why are people talking sword torch? GS/staff delivers the most substained AoE dps with the right build. With dungeons AoE is what you want and i can still hit for over 10k on single target. Thats without full zerker as we need to stay on our feet.

Sounds to me like a player problem. If people in full ‘zerker gear can’t stay on their feet they should probably think about investing in some +Toughness and/or +Vitality gear.

So just how long do we plan on taking to kill a boss? its about balance. I am not saying we need it for current content but maybe they can add it to increase depth in new content.

May i remind us Guardians that we are one of two heavy armor classes the one of them 2 that has the best damage mitigating skills. if we are saying that fights can not be melee what does that say about the game, I do use scepter but not to sound like i’m having a go but i use it when i’m being lazy. Yes i am always lazy when i fight GL(lupi)lol. but come on i run a balanced zerker soldiers mix and melee anywhere i go.

A Guardian with a scepter is just a let down to any party. Come on if a mob moves you lose 100% of your burst dmg and that burst dmg is low at best mace auto attack can hit for more in a single attack than what smite hits for in total.

Yes we do have some uti that can res, but the guardian one is broken the war or necro one i think is pretty good. but maybe its the 11th skill was content based and was like a twice per run skill as a hard res. the prob with ressing downed players can and often wipes the team. This would give so much more depth into what Anet could put out in the way of content.

As i spend most my time doing different dungeons i come across….. too many guardians using ranged weapons. Now yes the staff is so good and i use it all the time as my back up weapon. What i am talking about is Scepter/shield or focus. I just want to know why. it really has very little to offer a party. where as your melee weapons have so much to offer from heals-boons-dps-CC. I know it sucks when you get downed but its sucks a lot more wiping because someone wasn’t supporting there team.

Not going to lie, i do think it is because people have trouble in melee and start to back away from combat in order to just stay alive.
Or am i missing something? and please no one say they can support the team with shouts from the back.

LanfearShadowflame.3189 does have a good point, But i remember really enjoying FoW UW in the early days of GW1. I stopped playing GW1 short time after eotn gave us an “easy mode” because A) why would you do something in 2 hours you could do in less than 1. couldn’t get players to do non-easy mode due to ^A^..
but yes he has a point making us grind a dungeon for 2 hours isn’t hard content.
maybe a solo dungeon. I really do not know however.
