Side Note
Copestetic – actually, if you like to have outfit that shows your tattoos both on arms and legs… you’re choice is quite narrow – as for the legs, theres only (!) 1 option available – and that is, ironically, bottom that you are given at start (acolyte one). There’s some other bottoms that exposes a bit of legs as well (new phoenix set, feathered skirt, HOTW skirt) but there are no other “minis” if thats what you are looking for.

As for the top here’s a bit more diversity – acolyte top, karma lvl 80 corset, feathered top, order of whispers top, conjurer’s set top.. But none of these leaves all of the arms exposed, they have some sort of sleeves anyways…
And yes, I’m also astonished how detailed might be the character you create (norns tattoos, charrs fur patterns, sylvari skin patterns) and how much work was put to have it all covered because of the insane amount of sets that covers it all anyways…

So how many characters do you have?

8 × 80 (to cover each profession) and another 7 in progress (8 planned) to have at least pair of each race as well.
I made some short video of the loading screen which might be seen here

Edit – uploaded better movie with sound & better quality

You see guys – this is what I personally like. A story behind the created character – you always look at it from the very different angle… therefore

shinobaruwrxsti – 8,5/10 without the story I would have rated your toon differently. But I know what you were aiming for – and you nailed it. Especially helm with “ears” matches desired theme perfectly. To some degree your toon reminds me a watchknight In the sense of “mechanical” golem. I wouldn’t like to play this character myself, but very good job overall.

Side note –
Hebee – same story. Great “postapocalyptic” toon! Very original approach. And I liked the story as much as screenshots.

Pandeh – Great screenshots! especially the first one That required quite a good timing

My turn – Here’s my elementalist – The reason behind her was simple. She is a sorceress. She doesn’t care about armor- thats what the magical shields are for. But she cares for her looks. She likes to be standing out. Ostentatiously. I remember when i created her I really wanted to use that particular face. I thought that this is the only one with “mature” and “dignified” feeling at the same time.
And I failed miserably. I wasn’t impressed, so wasn’t my wife. When total makeover kit got available, I bought it immediately, reworked her and there she is…

As for the gear – having so many toons I decided to have masquerade set at least on one of my characters. I like the lavishness of this set and that’s the only one with the crinoline:)
To sum it up – nothing really creative about outfit, but I really like her face and I think colors aren’t too bad.

Well, it happened on this thread not for the first time stemare
I’ll do that so.
Guardian of yours – 7/10 On a bright side a) his mature look b)original mix and match
Downside would be a) overwhelming blue (but it might be the pictures, he pretty much blends with the background)
b) General heaviness – it’s not your fault really, the body /head ratio on norn is ridiculous, especially if you go for the largest body model (which I think you did) – I just don’t like it myself

Necro 9/10 I really like him. I really do! He is “asuran funny” yet scary at same time. And replacing his eyes with necro mask is an excellent idea. It removes this froggy aspect out of asura and that’s great. One point down just for… i dont know what for… Heck, on the second thought I give you 10/10. Perfect asura :-)

Next voter go for Mikuna please.

Soulmyr – Actually, this “shout for realism” was more inspired by completely different discussion that takes place on “suggestion” forum and, to the degree, discussion that we used to have within our guild. I falsely assumed that you may be in this “realism” camp judging by the toons that you have showed. And I apologize for that.

And yes, I understand that the whole thread is rather subjective than objective by its nature
As for your suggestions – I’m just still curious (in a positive way) what would you replace it with. Personally, I use http://argos-soft.net/GW2ArmorGallery/index.php?sex=1&weight=2&color=10&race=3 as a point of reference. (they don’t have new gem store armors available, I use dulfy for that).

And I’m more or less pleased with all my characters but there’s always some room for improvement (my wife not once nor twice gave me some excellent ideas)

Soulmyr – I see that you are very interested in character looks and you always back up your judgment with a reason – which is greatly appreciated. Although I may say one thing – our aesthetics and approach to realism differs. A lot. In a game where you can shoot fireballs out of your hands and summon wraiths to fight at your side I find screaming for “realism” in its pure form is at least silly. Having said that – I like some coherency and idea for any character I create. But I wont elaborate that, at least not now.

About your comments – what exact changes do you suggest? The only thing that comes to my mind is order of whispers bottom – with tight pants and boots with stilettos – but they create “heavier” look, which i don’t like. You see, named set has perfect sandals, with shurikens, which i find perfect for the ninja style. I wouldn’t like to sacrifice this lovely laced sides of the “named” pants for something similar but not that cute.
I really appreciate creative mix’n’match (check my wifes necro or guardian) but I am reluctant to create a mix just for the sake of it.
But I agree with you about the bow. And I think I’ll replace it.
Thanks for your feedback nevertheless. And I would love to keep this conversation

P.S. I may defend some reasons behind my wife’s ele as well if u wish

Since it seems that you posted more or less simultaneously, I’ll rate you both

Shadowmaster – 7/10 You’ve got incinerator. You’ve got another shiny which I’m not entirely sure what it is. Moreover, You’ve got armor that I don’t think I recognize (not that easy thing on asuras). And I’m also not sure what kind of look were you aiming for – Asura on the picture seems to be nice, smiley decent chap, his robes are kinda cartoonish – vampire scary (so are the colors) and your weaponry is shining. It is some interesting mix but I don’t see any clear direction here. It might be just screenshot though.

Scourge – 6,5/10 what can I say… Your norn is… big. And she seems to be ostentatiously proud of it. She is almost shouting – See me? I’ve got curves. A lot of it. And I’m not ashamed to wear corset. And it is white so you all may see me better. And I also dyed my hair white to drag our attention even more. Thanks to your description I know where were you going. It isn’t my aesthetics but I got your idea. But i would have tone a bit colors down (unless you really wanted to play it on the edge) and definately I would have changed pistols.

As for me – I will continue with another female norn of mine. this time it’s a thief.

When I created her, I had in mind really fit, agile and dexterous woman. And I wanted her to be “ninja” type. You know – she jumps, she climbs, she does acrobatics… So no trenchcoats, nothing standing out – her outfit must be her second skin – that’s why so called “named set” choice. It is dyed yellow and black – It was “wasp” inspired, cause that’s her fight style – shes easy to squash but if she hits. she is deadly.
As i said before – I created 3 norns at headstart, out of ginger, blond and black I have chosen black hair for her.
And i wanted her to be pretty at same time – so she has long hair, but tied in a pony tail.

And I know that she might have gotten excellent tattoos (see my wife’s thief) but I wanted to keep her face plain… I don’t know, I may go for this tattoos at some stage. I wish i could have better selection over body and face tattoos independently…

So there she is, hope you like her.

Tuomir – I wish I could see more of your character to make up my mind but in general I like what I saw. White “hair” contrast nicely with dark armor which is some sort of combo of cultural armor mainly I guess.
The only downside imo is facial model choice and colour, but again, it’s just my personal preference.
Well deserved 8/10

So I’ll start with mine – This is my ranger. Yes, I know that she is some sort of twin of my wife’s one, but we were doing these characters separately. It’s just that our vision of the characters is so similar

Anyways – here I was aiming at some sort of pirate/rogue “ish” a’la Isabela from Dragon’s Age 2, but with the ginger hair – I created 3 norn female characters at launch (their “sporty” and “muscular” look fits ranger and thief way better than human females imo) and I wanted them to be white, black and ginger haired.

I wanted her to look tough, angry an dangerous as well but still keeping beauty – hope you can see all of that :-)

TriggerSad – 9,5/10. I really like the tan, haircut of your model and phoenix top with feathered (sic!) bottom works surprisingly well. So does mix of white and gold. It would be a perfect ten (your character is really inspiring and it passes my subjective test – “would I like to have this character myself?”
But the shoes… If I were you I would have relace them with something else…They are simply too “heavy” for the “light” impresion of the rest.

Another of my wife’s ones – elementalist.

Another side comment – tastegw, that is probably most expensive set I’ve seen so far. It requires 3 gem store purchases and T-3 chest piece… And for the love of god, take that ugly, non-matching pauldron off and your set would be perfect

what shall i replace it with, any suggestions

If I were you I would have simply not show it at all or I would go for simple and elegant T2 cultural shoulders. That skull seems to be out of completely diffrent story. Lets have it like that – the whole outfit seems “plausible”. Skull is exception – its “overdone”. It creates a feeling of incoherency. Thats why I wouldn’t use that.
Just my opinion

Grebo – 8,5/10
. It’s not that I really like the look of the character you posted – because I don’t, but I have to admit that it matches engineer perfectly, and color choices are good – especially metal parts. And having a jetpack is an excellent idea, it really gives your toon “techno” feel.
Point taken for facial choice (too young and too “smooth”) but thats the bane of human male models in general in GW 2 and I shaved off half point for my personal dislike of overwhelming presence of trenchcoats in general.

Another of my wife’s norn females – This time it is guardian.

As I said in my last post it would be nice to have but I can see where others might complain about it being added.

To your question maxing every craft does not cost as much as buying three extra character slots and maxing all eight professions.

Those “others” may complain about anything really. For instance time limited achievements. Or not AP rewarding enough (like legendaries). Or too much rewarding (like bumped GW1 retro achievements). So that’s Irrelevant.

As for the cost? At the moment around 90 gold. As I said before – Wardrobe achievements costs way more, if you are completionist. And that isn’t a problem but 3 extra slots would be? I really don’t see any issue here.
And I think we should apply same rules for all of the achievements.

Because I didn’t state it in my first post, sorry bout that, I think it would be nice if there were something for maxing every class. I think however that those that didn’t want that many characters would complain, similar to those that prefer one character vs multiple characters for completing anything because people will complain solely for complaining sometimes.

Based on that you may complain at leveling crafting that you dont want for AP, buying unwanted minis and cultural gear, spending karma on futile drinks etc, etc…
If someone don’t care about AP at all, he wouldn’t do any of unwanted things.
If someone is desperate about AP, he would do all of the things, no matter how silly, pointless or stupid.

So why have some of these things (maxing craft) and some not (maxing professions)?

Erasculio – i think that in terms of PvE I may safely narrow down your statement to – People don’t play open world content except for the one that is profitable. Which at the moment is world bosses and champions. Hope I’m not too far away from truth.

Now lets have a look at that from my perspective – perspective of an altoholic with 16 chqracters
How do I play GW2? Most of all I play open world content. I already have 8×80 characters, 3 of them with 100% world exploration and another one getting close.

I think I am perfect example of someone that shouldn’t dissapoint Anet by your standards. I just try to see and explore everything.

But you know what? It’s not that I feel punished for that kind of playstyle. i would rather say – dicouraged. First of all – economically my playstyle doesn’t make any sense. I just live on my loot and gatherings, which is peanuts in comparison to what i might be getting by grinding. Low lvl mats and gatherable mats are (with some exceptions) dirt cheap and hearts gratification used to be laughable – with the inflation now it’s just pure mockery.
Same goes to rewards for map completion – for the time investment (again, in comparison to what you may get by effective ginding) are pathetic.

Now you may say – “it is just your choice, no one is forcing you to make plenty of alts, you may happily grind instead” – and you are absolutely right. It is my choice. It is my playstyle.

but my point is – Anet encourages their playerbase to grind (best time vs reward factor) and discourages to play open world (worst time vs reward factor).

It would be as simple as rewarding map completion best and they would have all of the players spread across the maps instantly. But the way things are at the moment, they clearly don’t want that.

So no, they shouldn’t be disappointed.
Its up to them which areas of the game are most profitable. And they would have been silly not knowing that players are migrating there all the time…

Game terminology doesn’t necessary match real terminology.

No, sadly it doesn’t. That is why 98% of all the achievements in this game are carebear achievements. I am surprised we don’t get achievements points for taking 100,000 steps.

That was exactly my point :-) Whether we like it or not, game achievements don’t have much to do with a the real meaning of the word.
But there are some exceptions. I would say that gauntlet achievements are the perfect example of skill based ones. You actually need to accomplish something to get it.

But… there’s another thing. It all really depends whether were having achievements for purely cosmetic reasons (like it used to be) or were having them as something that has real value (like it is now). Then time investment vs number of AP starts to be important – and this is where Anet fails big time. (check wvw vs some of the living story ones)
And 1 more thing. Since they reward some of the accomplishments with the title, I think that 8×80 deserves it way more than 8 crafting professions maxed that gives you a title and (as far as I remember) 320 AP.

Because contrary to popular belief, grinding 8 characters to 80 is not a achievement. Achievements by definition are suppose to be skill based not time based

Yes, especially wardrobe and mini-pet ones require a lot of skill.
or WvW maybe? they aren’t time based at all…
Let me think.. oh, all of the killer ones and weapon master… yes, they do require a lot of skill. If you count patience and being stubborn as a skill.
I may continue, but i think you get my point.

Game terminology doesn’t necessary match real terminology.

I’m not a fan of any achievement you MUST pay money for first

that’s a big conflict of interest and would be pretty distasteful

First of all – you don’t have to pay real money for it – at all. You may exchange in-game gold for gems then buy character slots. At the moment 1 slot is around 30 gold.

If you mean by paying money for it in-game money, take legendary achievements and wardrobe achievements, mini pet achievements – they require WAY more money to accomplish – this way or another.

Having said that, why on earth you get rewarded for something that is relatively simple (all crafting professions maxed out) and not rewarded for something that requires more work and is kind of similar achievement?
on the top of that, it will encourage players to actually repeat all of the content to the degree, which may (or may not) result in quiet maps getting a bit busier. What would be wrong with that?

On a side note – Leo Paul, i would have rated your mockingbird way higher :-) Check mesmer I posted and you will know why :-) I think I know what you were trying to accomplish and you did it well.

Warrior – 8,5/10. I think that female heavy armor is another tough nut to shell – most armors make human female look really frail or plainly stupid. You decided to use Vigil armor which turns out to be an excellent choice and dye choice works really well. I just really don’t like this hairstyle, looks way to tousled to me, hence minus 1 point. And another -0.5 since i think that twilight would be better choice than sunrise.

Ele – 9/10. Very interesting screenshot… I regret that I can’t see your char any better. Or maybe it works in his favor? Looks very mysterious… It is sylvari, isnt it?

Necro? – 7-10 funny, I use same mask on mine, same horns and my tail seems to be identical… yes, I have female charr necro which looks identical to yours… i’m not entirely convinced by your clothing, but again – can’t see that much on your picture.

I’ll be consistent so – another of my wife’s characters – this time it would be necro. very good mix’n’match and something that i haven’t seen anywhere else.

To be quite frank, I think that creating asura character that really stands out is extremely hard task. Unless you decide to do it in some funny/grotesque way.
You clearly have chosen the second option with this strangely looking oversized helmet that looks like huge, turned upside down pot.
And I guess that you tried to get this, dusty, “worn out armor” impression and thats the reason for monochromatic choice of dyes.
Overall it is generic guardian with a strange twist. Not my aesthetics really and I find it hard to rate asuras, but I’ll give you 8/10.

I’ll continue with my wife’s toons – here is her mesmer with brand new light armor. The goal here was to achieve “paradise bird” look that really drags attention since she is mesmer so her job is to create clones that drags attention out of her and confuse her opponent.
Enjoy!

I have posted all my characters but I love your wife’s thief.
Her armor accentuates her tattoos really well and her face and hair choices are awesome.
She looks like Artemis,so the only downside to me is that she is a Thief not a Ranger
:)

Fringilla: I love the way your armor has worked out with that tattoos awesome norn theif 9/10.
This is my thief

Thanks for feedback guys!

Morrigan – On a side note – Your ranger is one of the best, if not best Sylvari female model I’ve ever seen. I remember doing mine and I find face model you have used ugly… Yet you’ve made really nice looking character out of that. And combination of gear /dyes / bow works fantastically well.
And funny enough, necro of mine is named… Morrigan Vigo (all of both mine and my wife’s chars use that surname :-)

Aeneasxs – I really thought that the only Sylvari matching armor is cultural one but some of you prove me that I was wrong. You are another example, i think that your choices works well. The only thing is that the lighting on your pictures isn’t great so I cant see the details, but I liked what I saw. 8/10

I think you have ignored person above you. Therefore I’ll ignore your screen shot and rate Jonathan toons.

Guard – Armor isnt too bad itself and classic black and white match works here although I really don’t like face model you have used. Another thing is that most of the facial choices for human male models aren’t great to say the least. 6,5/10

Necro – a bit too monochromatic in this case and i have mixed feelings about mask that you have used. I would like to see him in real environment instead of just loading screen. Well, nothing really stands out on asuran models so i give you solid 7/10

Thief – here is good example of monochromatic akittens best – you did kind of ‘stealthy" thief. And I absolutely love this mask on charr :-) Works really well. So does armor choice – it matches character that doesn’t like to drag too much attention. 9,5/10, very good choice.

I’m positive that I’ve seen your Hattie Bell in some other thread as well :-)
My judgment on her.
What I like is that she is prime example of mix’n’match. And not too bad one. So big plus for the creativity and bold use of colors on the top of that, but…
I’m not entirely convinced that Krytan top matches that well named set pants, especially on human female model. visually it looks like her bust size is almost same as waist size (at least from the front perspective).
Personally, i think it would have looked way better on Norn female model.
I"m not a big fan of this hairstyle, but thats only my personal preference.
Overall I appreciate your effort but i wouldn’t use that setting myself, so I’ll give you honest 7/10.

Having 15 character myself I’ll start with one (first one created) here.
Here’s my necromancer – I was aiming at beautiful character with some notion of devotion to undead side of things.
Hope you like her.

Out of all of my 80’s i have already two with 100% world completion and five with more than 50 . And my goal is to make all of 8 80’s to get 100 world completion.

I really enjoy the world Anet created and I don’t find it boring nor dull, with exception of few really annoying hearts (Jotun exchange comes to my mind first) and vistas.

Since you break down so nicely your characters into race/profession categories, I decided to post all of my character’s screen shots.
I guess theres no need to describe them, most of them are quite obvious :-)

Hope you like them since I made some effort to make them look exactly the way I wanted :-)

Just out of curiosity – Guild Wars 2 has been out for long enough to let players level as many alts as it pleases. So my question is – how many characters do you have? And how many of them are in their 80’s?

To answer my own question -

Currently I have 9 characters – 8 of them are lvl 80 to cover all professions plus level 20 second guardian (to have female heavy armor option to dress)

If you only had 1 character slot

If I had only had 1 character slot I wouldn’t have played this game at all. I just like the diversity of all of my 8 characters and now I just made 9th, my second guardian :-)
But theoretically it would have been
Human
Elementalist
Order of Whsipers

Espacially since “Fringilla Vigo” is a character from my favorite novel and she is human sorceress, so it makes perfect sense to choose her as my main :-)

Personally, it worries me not only on the personal level as something that makes my money making process more hard and therefore more time consuming, but it also drastically affects the market overall (take price of unidentified dyes as a prime example).
And it REALLY concerns me that there is no official answer at all for such a huge thread.
Is that somehow shows that they are ignoring the community in certain, clearly uncomfortable, respects? Looks to me that this is such a case…

A little conspiracy theory here, but maybe they intend to make FotM such a rewarding place to actually discourage players to play any open world content? That would be really ironic if that was the case – to put so much effort in creating such a detailed, complex and breathtaking world to make it all empty for the sake of new dungeon…

Moreover, whether loot change was intentional or not, at the moment the only viable method of acquiring money is to do FotM. Or at least this way is superior over farming Orr which definitely forces us to play certain way to get profit.

Actually, me and my wife noticed the vast decrease in drop rates as well. Basically, we have a habit of “farming” Cursed Shores events for about 1-1,5 an hour to get drop that we can sell, especially “hunting” for rares. (both of us have gear with MF for that purpose) Before the Lost Shores we were getting around 4-5 rares per person. But the very first day after the patch we were quite shocked, because we get absolutely nothing at all in terms of rares. I said to myself – let’s not jump to conclusions too quickly, it might be just bad luck on RNG. But the next day she got none again and I collected 3. She got frustrated, I thought that I’m pretty close to my average, so it was bad but not TOO bad. So I’ve said – ok, it’s really not plausible for you to have not a single drop tomorrow, the probability is really low. And guess what happened? The third day she got nothing at all again (I get 2). I’m quite aware that we just might have been extremely unlucky but I wouldn’t rate chances that it actually happened any high. So yes, we’re also waiting for some sort of official response to our concern or at very least clarification of how Magic Find really works, because we have a strange feeling that it has close to none impact on drops at the moment…

Thoughts on Ascended Gear? [Merged threads]

First of all, adding new tier doesn’t close the gap between Exotic and Legendary gear, because there wasn’t any gap in the first place. It introduces completely new tier of gear, which requires certain activities to get. And that is against what they said before launch of the game. So that the first lie.

Second Lie is that we will see only MINOR increase of statistics with the new tier. of course, theres only +5 power and +5 precision total, but in the case we have seen on the published picture that’s only secondary stats with MF being main one. And that is 7 versus 10, which doesn’t make that much difference per se, but let’s imagine whole set of ascended gear on that basis. It will be 11 (let’s exclude back slot) by 3 which is 33 Magic Find MORE than exotic gear. No one will tell me, that is irrelevant and only MINOR upgrade to my toon. Of course, there’s no need to have it, but that way there’s no need to have exotics nor even yellows or greens. There’s no need to get to 80 or play this game at all… But IF I want to stay COMPETITIVE i will need the whole set of the new introduced gear.
Now to the point – By now my idea of playing GW2 was to make 8 characters, get them all to 80, equip them in exotics and enjoy all of the side activities that game has to offer (exploring, puzzles, spvp, WvW, achievements, legendaries etc). And that was still within my time limit and I could take my time to do it all without a hassle.

And now, thank you Anet, you ruined it all for me. Now to have sense of accomplishment I would have to Run same dungeons 8 times in order to get your gear on all of my toons? And I can’t be sure whether that’s the end of my struggle or not?

I feel cheated and I lost a lot of trust and excitement that i had playing your game. And I’m wondering whether I should pay you any more (in form of buying gems) or not, since I came to this MMO for not having to deal with any gear grind treadmills anymore…
