I think Living Story is bad for this game

Genei.7502

As a general concept I really like the living story. I like the short monthly set of events that tell a story and lead up to a permanent change and effect on the world. Lost Shores was great for this. I also don’t mind the temporary chance to earn some items. I would prefer to see a little more of this permanent change to the world. Add some more armor or weapon skins that can always be earned. Permanently add a dungeon in.

I also wouldn’t mind a series of monthly stories that leads up to a big year end event. Even if they let us permanently kill one dragon a year there would be plenty of dragons to go through…and their defeat can always be temporary.

Holiday events of living story being non-permanent is fine as I expect those celebrations to come back around.

RNG Boxes, Tickets, and Tokens

Personally, I refuse to play the RNG box game. I have terrible luck. There’s no way I’m paying real money to gamble for digital items.

Flame and Frost introduced pay for weapon skins. I didn’t really like most of them except the quiver, so I bought that. I also bought the molten pick and harvesting sickle. I don’t mind paying for items like that. It just always seems that the items I would be willing to pay real $ for cost astronomical amounts, or random amounts.

I don’t really like using the mystic forge either. I get junk. I’d rather sell my rares for guaranteed amounts of silver/gold and buy exotics.

I too don’t dig the random gimmick. Give me a guaranteed buy and I’ll likely go for it. Storage expansion, extra character slot, new profession/race, new content, etc and I’ll buy it. Except storage I haven’t seen anything I really wanted or could use. So here I am, waiting for something cool to buy, but no $50 for a single weapon skin is not within my budget.

Well I had a similar problem the first time I reached the top. I jumped at the right moment, saw my model right at the center of the broken clock face. However I also got the achievement, AND was then sent back to the beginning. Only had the problem one time. though

I am very much looking forward to this puzzle. I’ve been using the clock tower as my desktop background since the Halloween page went live. I’m sure some people would hate this but I’d really love a dungeon that was actually filled with puzzles like this instead of monsters.

Frequently misses enemies as well. Sometimes this happens when I’m not even moving, I suddenly just start missing the target and have to wander around trying to get the game to recognize the object is enveloped in flames.

Beautiful work relegated to town clothes...

zeroaegis: Your paranoia is unfounded. GW1 had a costume one year that was the Mad Kings Court. Male version was much like this, big flaming pumpkin head. The alternate costume made you headless but kept the flame. I regularly run around GW1 with an Assassin that has no head but a flame. Outside Halloween I very rarely ever saw anyone running around like that. In fact most of the time you see people in the difficult to earn tonics or armor for the prestige they carry rather than the costumes that can be easily purchased.

Jabberwock: Your complaint is more about changing ANY look, not just BLTC or Event skins. Also my suggestion was to allow them to be used for EITHER town clothes OR armor. Give the players choice. Give me the option to run around as King Thorn until I get in combat, then once I’m out swap back. Or just stay as King Thorn all the time. Or look like a normal human (town clothes) until combat and then I look like King Thorn kicking butt. If ANet wants to keep some costumes as costume only for the costume brawl…great. Keep some armor only, keep some town clothes only, but give us some that can be either.

I agree. I was really looking forward to some holiday themed armor skins. The only existing armor skin I like I don’t have a single character that can wear it. I love the idea and method they’ve used with the gem store…I just don’t want any of the stuff in it. In GW1 I bought almost every holiday/event costume. They looked great and allowed for some additional character customization. If the switch into and out of town clothes was automatic and the costumes could be either town clothes or armor that would be ideal for me.

I appreciate the book and horns (and hopefully other little rewards as they come in the next acts). I don’t mind the weapon skins for the “end game” gamers. While I might have liked them, they’re not worth the effort. I love the content and decorations. I’ve got some keepsakes to prove “I was there when”.

I love the base idea of using this character as the new Traveling Collector. The rewards sound nice, but maybe too much. Some of that stuff is supposed to be really hard to come by.

Another idea is that Ameranth slowly moves through each zone, one zone per day. Needs protection, or supplies, gathering souvenirs and etc. Stops by the outposts in the area to rest. Actually traversing Tyria over the course of the month.

For PVE this class had done better for me than the other two scholars. Much easier to play. My only complaint is the Flesh Golem being deathly allergic to water. I didn’t even get into the water, just stood near and watched the Golem go into the deep end of the pool and fade away.

On a personal note, the name “Tengu” always irritates me to no end. When I hear that name I think of Japanese demons with long noses that live on mountains. Quite scary and ugly, too, those demons.

Actually there are two common depictions of Tengu, one being the feathered and bird headed variety. Some had wings, some didn’t. Some were shapeshifters and disguised themselves to walk among men. There is a character in the move 13 Assassins that is Tengu, just looks like a dirty mountain man at first…

Combat, Dynamic Events... what's the point if they're easy mode?

I agree with quite a bit of this. I haven’t fought the “little” dragons yet but every other big boss fight has been this way. The more people there are, the less difficult it is. In that same way though going solo against these big bosses may as well be suicide.

Although events scale they start off too hard, and don’t scale very well.

Although the big bosses should have minions, stop making them spawn in if there aren’t enough players. I tried to fight a Centaur boss by myself as no other players were around. I spent several minutes trying to kill off the minion centaurs before getting to the boss. Several more minutes of fighting the boss, the centaurs respawned. With no mechanic to stop reinforcements from appearing and the event unable to scale respawns I quickly found myself drastically out numbered.

The bigger they are the harder they fall. This is a concept often seen in strategy/tactical games. The big powerful unit is a magnet for attacks. In a small scale things are easy to balance, but as numbers increase the multitude of small weak units are a diverse set of targets equal to a large amount of damage. So it doesn’t matter how hard the big boss hits. So he kills a few people here and there. No big deal. If he’s so powerful he can actually kill 50 players, people will exclaim he’s too powerful and quit trying to fight him.

So not only do the boss fights need to involve more unique mechanics, and scaling henchmen mobs, but a clearer threat. What happens if we can’t stop this boss? Slightly more permanent outcomes would be nice.

For Example:
The Priory is building a giant anti-dragon weapon. During a month of play time dynamic events lead up to its construction. Supply caravans being protected, the construction site being protected and etc. The more of these events that succeed the faster the weapon is completed. Once completed you need to lure one of the “little” dragons to it. The weapon is the only thing capable of bringing down such a large boss so baiting it to follow the players is more strategic. Make it mad, lure it with magic to consume, something like that. An event like this would gather attention as you move the large boss across the map. The big gun fires automatically, but smaller guns keep the dragon grounded, and unable to spam the area with massive AOE. The dragons goal is to destroy the weapon. Kill it before it can destroy the gun. Put a time constraint on too, adding to the difficulty scale. Story fluff for the time limit? Dragon is just gathering enough magic power to wipe everything in the area out.

This is the kind of event chain, and boss fight I was expecting to see in the game.

Don’t try to correct an Asura on the use of the name of their race. It’s too complicated for a bookah to understand.

I would love the power suit if it were either useful OR fun. Not having a time limit would be fun. When I discovered it had a time limit I thought if it was really powerful that would be OK, but it isn’t skills are slow and damage is low. If it will get me out of a jam that would be ok, but it neither grants a new health bar nor a noticeable armor bonus.

This game would be mind blowing with open world pvp

I agree that I would avoid a PVP server like the plague. I enjoy the kindness fostering that the game offers currently. I played FF11 where open world PVP wasn’t allowed. Griefers would level up, then drag high level mobs from across the map to kill the low level players. Moral of the story is that given any avenue griefers will annoy. GW2 has done a great job of limiting those avenues. The most they can do is stand over your character and not revive you.

The basic lesson the game is trying to teach is that being competitive isn’t always the best. That an inherently co operative system can be successful.

Argument for the other side:
If Anet were to suddenly decide they want to give in on this. Lore wise there are plenty of factions more interested in their own personal gains and not the larger issues at hand (hmmm almost like the real world). Some, like the sons of svanir, openly support the dragons. It would be possible to allow guilds to side with one of these factions. The guild would be required to pay an allegiance tithe every month to stay on the sociopath side. This partially limits the number of players able to join the “bad guys” and provides additional income to support those additional servers and development. In the spirit of the initial design you’d be forbidden from damaging players or NPCs inside the capitals. All the dynamic events that involved these factions now become player run events. Events involving fighting or supporting the lesser races can be inverted.

Want to add some more realism? If enough players side with the Dragons and corrupt the world that server gets shutdown and all the characters on it permanently deleted. Add a nice little cut scene of the Dragons eating everything.

Personally I really like that the weapons actually matter. What I would have liked is that different weapons of the same type actually changed some skills. Like the way pets have some unique abilities. Frost axe has a chill skill, Chaos axe has confusion. This can be handled somewhat with sigils, but I liked the idea of having different skills based on the individual weapon rather than simply its type.

I have no complaints about armor and variety, but more is always better. Love the art and creativity.

Yes, need weapon dye. I was so surprised to have such an excellent dye system for armor and nothing for weapons.

Hollywood.2407:
Don’t hold your breath.
And not because what you suggest would really hurt the game, it would help it..agreed.
it’s because the vast majority of MMO developers purposely design their games to have freely obtainable(gather, trade, loot etc..the typical methods) incentives or highly sought after items. When they do this, they create an artificial market with supply and demand. Then come the gold sellers.
Some games have avoided this pretty well … but clearly it’s obvious when development teams want gold sellers around..it’s a dirty underhanded two way business.
When they talk about gold spam prevention, you can believe it’s through lying eyes and a fake smile.
If not, then why do they design the games this way?
…. .. . ;crickets;

No what causes this issue is people trying to cheat a system. Any player can effectively buy gold straight from Anet. I applaud the BLTC gem/gold system. Exchanging money for time is basic economics. This is handled in game, secure, safe, and without supporting any negative behavior. Attempting to circumvent this system for personal gain is the issue. Gold Buyers trying to get a better deal, and Gold Sellers trying to make money by playing a game.

Removing the in game mail system is terrible, but making it an optional white list is an excellent idea.

I agree with the first point entirely. Particularly when I’m in a mood for one type of gameplay or another. If I want to go skill point hunting for example, knowing what zones I’ve already maxed in skill challenges would be nice.

The second one I would see as an option to display markers. Not seeing the zone is something of a bit of immersion. I would like to see zones that aren’t rectangular too.

I’d like to add that marking out the effective area of an incomplete task would be nice. I find myself occasionally wandering outside of the effective area and not getting credit for some kills and etc.
