Engi used to be my main, but changes to the game over time left me feeling very underpowered (compared in particular to Mesmer and Necro). Now it seems it’ll sit shelved until turrets get better worked out.
I enjoyed the dance of toolbelt skill, deploy turret, time the overcharge, pick it up, reuse the toolbelt skill, etc. Now I have even less control over the turret than the Ranger pet.
I can’t move it, I can’t tell it when to use a better skill, I can’t tell it what to target.
except I’m using the action camera. So it isn’t that my character is facing a different direction. Also I’ve had it happen while running. I’m already pressing forward and when I dodge forward I actually dodge backward.
I’d believe you if you said the server believes I’m facing a different direction, though I have no idea why it would think that, so…bug
Frequently, though not every time, I dodge my character goes the opposite direction of what I’ve pressed.
When knocked down, and attempting to roll away from the enemy I roll toward
When running away from an enemy I roll forward, only to roll backward toward the enemy
On rare occasions I’ve rolled right/left when trying to roll backward.
I still experience this. In towns like LA or Rata Sum, open world like Blazeridge steps. Not getting disconnected for inactivity
Electromagnetic gathering tools
Uplifting Aria: similar to the bubble glider, the character plays a flute and is surrounded by (dyable) notes.
adding my vote for racial and orders based gliders
Yes, thank you Anet! I’ve been a player since the betas of GW1 and I continue to try and bring friends into the fold.
The birthday presents this year are the best yet! Really wonderful.
I don’t think we necessarily need to get rid of the idea of soulbound. That helps out the economy and adds value to Ascended and Legendary gear. However not being able to salvage it or toss it into the mystic forge is really an unfair set of circumstances that isn’t clearly spelled out.
Auric/Exalted Armor/Outfit
I’ve got a back item, glider, and weapons, but this part of the look is just missing
Auric/Exalted Dye Set
Belinda’s Sword and Dagger (Katana and Wakizashi)
Melandru’s Regalia
Kormir’s Regalia
Abadon’s Regalia
I’d love to see the return of the Electromagnetic Ascender
So I realized I hadn’t selected the Priory Back Item with any of my 7 characters, embarrassing.
So I decided to go ahead and delete my least advanced character. I moved all of his gear into the bank real quick and remade him.
Now however I have a bunch of soulbound gear I can’t even salvage the upgrades out of, and it seems stuck in the bank. I thought I would at least be able to remove the gear from the bank, but it seems that soulbound gear can’t even be held by another character. I thought that soulbound just meant another character couldn’t USE it.
Is there really nothing that can be done with this gear now?
I was on vacation and I return to see a neat new movement toy was added to the gem store, but after I log in it’s already no longer available? Really?
It’s in A-net’s best interest to remove items periodically.
1) Artificial scarcity. People find out that an item is leaving the gem store in X days, so will rush to buy it even if they otherwise wouldn’t. It pressures people into buying the item as it arrives and as it is taken off the shelves.
2) Reducing choice in the gem-store. It’s been shown that too many products/a cluttered shop (in real life or online) is enough to drive away a potential customer. If there’s too much choice, decision-making and comparison becomes much more difficult for the subconscious (and conscious) mind, meaning that a customer is more likely to put off a purchase or not purchase at all.
3) Changing the gem-store frequently gives extra incentive to frequently log-in. Changing the gem-store also means that there will be extra “news” regarding the gem-store, meaning more advertising about it on various social media. It’s all about pulling people into the game, resulting in a higher in-game population and more chances to sell things.
1) steep discounts offer this same thing. On sale 50% off, 2 days only. However by leaving it up for sale at a higher rate catches people that will pay any price to have it now. The downside is that high prices might scare off customers. Both models have benefits and detractions. Finding the balance between what you need to make, what you’d like to make, and the most you can ask is the talent of economists. Certainly A-Net has access to a lot more data to perform analytics on their customer base than I do, however the game is constant advertisement that a product exists but is ultimately unattainable.
2) Advertising a product and then not having it available has also been shown to drive away customers. If what I want is item A but I have no idea if it’ll ever come back there are a number of people that will give up, and a number that will hold on to their $10 waiting for it to be available…rather than spending 3x that.
3) See response to #1. No advertisement ability is lost
Ultimately A-Net has source data they use to help make decisions. I’m simply using this public form to add to that data for consideration. If you feel like you’d like to see gem store items retain more permanence or not, you too can add to the data. Defending the status quo like it isn’t changeable isn’t adding to the data, or the conversation.
So I periodically go through the wardrobe and see if I can find a look for a character I like better. Then I find an item (like Glint’s Gaze Mask) that fits a look and I go to buy it ..but…alas it isn’t available. The other colors are, but not blue…for some reason.
I humbly suggest that rather than removing an item from the store entirely (unless it is removed from the game entirely) it be left in the store. Rather than running limited time only to purchase offer limited time only discounts to encourage sales.
I made it through page 2 before I couldn’t handle anymore of the “I’m a casual player and I DID IT” nonsense.
Sure, “casual”, isn’t really a specific quantification or qualification but I think this attitude is far more toxic than “I bought the game and I think I deserve to be able to play it”.
If you get a sense of accomplishment from having some pixels on screen that other people don’t then you should probably go farm up all the legendary equipment. Elite Specs are a game play mechanic, not a badge of honor for you to wear about and tout what a totally awesome player you are and how superior to all the “casuals” you are.
If you acquired 200-400 new HP in less than a week you are not a casual player! Casual players typically spend somewhere near 10hrs of game play per week (less for me). I’m a casual player with 8 total characters. 1 has 100% map completion and all are lvl 80 (except the Revenant I just made). I’ve been playing GuildWars 1 since beta, played GW2 in New York before release. I still don’t have a legendary, I still don’t have ascended weapons, I still haven’t maxed out crafting, I haven’t gone into the double digits of fractal depths, I haven’t unlocked every dungeon piece of equipment. I’m a casual player. In all this time that HoT has been out I’ve managed to unlock my Reaper to use shroud, and basic gliding.
I complained about the elite spec lockout because it felt like all these other GIANT time sinks already in the game. Something for a casual player to maybe do one day. Even at 250 it is probably not something I’ll accomplish this year. I simply do not have the time to invest in doing it faster than that. Not that I mind a year long goal. Simply putting into perspective what 400HP translated to for me, a casual player.

THIS is the only thing I have to complain about with the expansion.
As a veteran player I have a number of characters that kept earning skill points past 80. With nothing better to do with the points I used them to craft weapons and sold them on the TP. Fast forward to present day and most of my characters could barely afford to unlock the ability to wield a new weapon. Particularly on my main that has 100% map completion.
To add insult to injury the map doesn’t display incomplete hero challenges like it did with skill points. It highlights all the other map completion items, but it won’t even highlight the ones I’ve completed. So now I get to “hunt and peck” for skill points flipping between websites and the game.
No, the irony is how many people complained that they had nothing left to improve on their characters after reaching level 80 and the lack of “end game” content. Now there is an expansion that is essentially only end game content with constant things to earn for your character and people complain about that.
I’m also loving the expansion. It has given renewed interest and goals in playing. The amount of voice acting that was invested is staggering. The action camera is probably the biggest pleasant surprise.
I must agree, this was well handled and I’ve run into very few issues. Congrats!
Two more satisfied customers here. Several years of playing this game with long time friends and new ones. Tons of great memories. I still love to play this game and encourage people to play. I hope for many more years of entertainment and joy.
by including a character slot the deal is balanced. giving players an extra copy of the game has a lot of abuse risks. this is the best thing Anet could do.
Needs update for the character slot inclusion. WooHoo!
Hooray! This was such a welcome thing to see today. Pre-ordering and advocating the game to commence in 3..2..1..
re: for some reason the forums are replacing the first ‘$5 beer’ with ‘kitten beer’ – I think it’s replacing “a five dollar beer” with “kitten beer” because of what the letter “a” followed by two characters that somewhat resemble “s” (kinda) spells. It’s a workaround way to write swear words. I use an “_” to separate letters/words/etc… when the swear filter changes them: a _ 5$ beer
ah yeah that makes sense now. Thanks!
Here’s another way to look at it.
You go to the pub and order kitten beer.
10min later they run a special, $2 for a beer.
Are you mad? No you buy another beer or keep drinking what you have.
They announce a celebration deal that if you bought a beer that day you can also get a burger for $5.
The kitchen opens and the pub starts selling $5 burgers with a free beer instead.
Someone walks in and buys a burger and gets a beer.
You walk up and order a burger, but you don’t get a beer because you already bought one that day.
Are you mad?
A very good way of putting it, sir. I only regret I only have one +1 to give to it.
Thanks! I was afraid my posts were invisible or something.
Perhaps my points are too logical to argue with and that’s why they are ignored.
(edit and for some reason the forums are replacing the first ‘$5 beer’ with ‘kitten beer’)
Except they they’ve been selling that game for $10 multiple times already, so OP, how did you feel that thousands of people (probably more) bought it for $10?

It only takes one guy to forget or not check. No matter how big the business. More people doesn’t mean better organization. A lot of times, more people means more confusion. It also depends on how much everyone is doing at the same time.
If you don’t see it as a possibility, then I don’t know what to tell you. I’ve been in too many situations in too many business where stuff that absolutely can’t be missed got missed.
It also only takes one person to go back to that FAQ after the tremendous out cry and change it to have the original text and an update with the current situation.
However I haven’t seen a lot of damage control from Anet unless some of the accounts trying to defend them in the forums are actually Anet employees…but that’s a pretty paranoid way to think.
The way I see it is
/trim/-Make a second set of Editions (50$, 75$ and 100$) but substitute the core game for something else (I would highly suggest a character slot) – Probably my favorite and give the option to those who already bought it to substitute the edition they bought for the equivalent without the core game. Anet don’t lose money and most will be happy about it.
-Make a second set of Editions with reduced price without the core game – Another good option but then Anet would have to accept a “loss” on the value they estimated HoT was.
-Give a separate code for both the core game and HoT so the “veteran” get an additional base account – Not the best option since not everyone actually want an additional base game but like I said before, that would be the bare minimum so everyone gets the same thing for the price they pay even though they are forced to pay for something they don’t want to get the part they want.Anyway, my 2 cents. I hope Anet will come out with something that will be fair for everyone.
Fantastic post. I agree with your possible solutions. I would also add/adjust the one about a character slot. The lowest price GW2 Core has sold for is $10. So it might be seen as fair and equitable to say: “existing accounts upgrading to HoT get a bonus 800 gems”. This way you cover the extra character slot for those that want it but you leave it open for players that might have an open slot already.
I also wanted to point out how splitting the codes for Core and HoT could be a great strategy:
As a veteran player I get a code for a game I already have. So I give it to a friend to try out. He likes the game and decides to buy HoT…but now he has a code for a game he already has. So he gives it to another friend to try out.
Now that is an ideal situation, and one Anet/NCSoft may have considered.
The downside of that model is the dishonest people. Those that will take a free game and sell it on ebay and etc for more than $10. Now there are some ways to try and get around that but it’s probably all a bigger hassle and expense than it’s worth. It may have been better than the negative press the current model has garnered though.
As a vet player (been here since betas) I am neither surprised, not upset by the price tag. Nor do I feel as though I have been ‘devalued’ because the standard edition contains the core game to entice new blood into the game. I’ve seen WoW do they exact same kitten. Besides, I’ve been here for almost 3 years now, I have thousands of hours into the game. I’ve gotten to experience things that those new players never will. Its a trade off that I’m content with.
I am not kittened off that the standard edition does not include a new character slot. Again, seems pretty status quo for an expansion. Yes, GW1 campaigns included a character slot, but this is not GW1 and a stand alone campaign is not technically the same thing as an expansion. Would it have been nice? Sure, but I didn’t expect it. They could potentially still throw one in, but I don’t think it would honestly resolve the issues. Instead, we’ll just end up with more complaints and more cost comparisons.
When WOW has folded an expansion into core it was years later.
HoT isn’t an expansion as you can not buy the core game anymore nor can you buy just the expansion. By definition on wikipedia this is an “expandalone” same category Factions and Nightfall are in.
I’m not even counting hearts in what I said. There are more hearts in Guild Wars 2 than there were in Prophecies, but I didn’t mention them. Nor did I mention jumping puzzles. Or the fact that Guild Wars 1 pathed. Or the fact that it didn’t have a TP. Or a z axis.
See, that’s the thing, they’re very different games.
/trimmed/
But comparing a lobby game to a true MMO is just silly.
Vayne you are exactly the kind of person I mentioned in my post. You are misunderstanding the discussion and trying to invalidate the comparison rather than addressing what can and is being compared. The OP is talking about just the expansions and the cost/content comparison of previous “expandalone” products offered by the same company.
Yes they are different games, but you know what GW2 is rather unlike most MMOs out there. So trying to make comparisons to how other games have handled their expansions will be imperfect. It doesn’t make the comparisons invalid.
Yes we don’t have all the information of what will be available in the new version of GW2, but that is what the OP is drawing attention to. The price compared to what is KNOWN about the new content.
In my post I’m drawing attention to the imbalanced value between new players and existing players.
If you want to include different content types in the comparison to balance out the argument that’s great.
I think some similarities are
GW1 = GW2
quests+bosses = hearts+dynamic events
missions = personal story steps
armor skins = armor skins
weapon skins = weapon skins
faces and hair = faces and hair
About Context: GW2 has no history of expansions for comparison. So if people make comparisons to similar MMO games from other companies some people complain about how the comparison isn’t valid because of a list of differences. So some other people try to make a more compelling comparison by staying in the same franchise and looking at that history. The context isn’t being ignored, but trying to argue context is missing the point.
Fantastic chart. You could add all of the unique armor, weapons, and face/hair styles that each “expandalone” brought to GW1 (since right now with GW2 you have to buy make over kits to get access to the new looks).
I didn’t make a pretty chart but I did make a comparison between first expandalones of both GW1 and 2:
If you bought Factions without previous GW1 Core:
character slots: 4
regions: 0 Core + 4 New
missions: 0 Core + 22 New
classes: 6 Core + 2 New
guild halls: 0 Core + 4 New
If you bought GW1 Core without Factions:
character slots: 4
regions: 6 Core + 0 New
missions: 25 Core + 0 New
classes: 6 Core + 0 New
guild halls: 8 Core + 0 New
purchased both:
character slots: 6
regions: 6 Core + 4 New
missions: 25 Core + 22 New
classes: 6 Core + 2 New
guild halls: 8 Core + 4 New
Now HoT:
If you bought HoT without previous GW2 Core:
character slots: 5
maps: 100% Core + 100% New
events: 100% Core + 100% New
classes: 8 Core + 1 New
guild halls: 0 Core + 2 New
if you bought GW2 Core:
character slots: 5
maps: 100% Core + 0% New
events: 100% Core + 0% New
classes: 8 Core + 0 New
guild halls: 0 Core + 0 New
purchased both:
character slots: 5
maps: 100% Core + 100% New
events: 100% Core + 100% New
classes: 8 Core + 1 New
guild halls: 0 Core + 2 New

(edited by Genei.7502)
Its expanding the current game ergo expansion.
you are not able to expand the game without buying the full product, ergo not an expansion.
Some aspects of HoT are added in on non upgraded accounts. Such as WvW map, specializations, some new items(i think old legendary crafting), and possibly more.
HoT qualifies as an “expandalone”. just like Factions and Nightfall before it. As I stated above.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expansion_pack
I would like to clarify that my post about promises was an attempt to lighten the mood a bit. When they make a media event out of it, it’s more than a promise.
As for what to call it, how about an Enhancement? Or Upgrade?
or an “expandalone” as I already mentioned in my TLDR post about the wikipedia entry:
Now I’ll also address the “bundle” concept.
When I bought Nightfall and GWEN I ended up getting a bundle because the two separated were more expensive than the bundle. The bundle included Factions, which I already had.
So what was I to do with this extra Factions code I had? I gave it to a friend to get him into playing. After which he bought Core and GWEN.
However with HoT the Core game “bundled” isn’t really there. I can’t give that to a friend. I can’t try to buy a non-bundled experience. Right now if I convinced a friend to buy into the game they would have access to more content than I do. Yes, yes, I have the whole Season 2 Living World content, but guess what, these new players can buy that whole or a-la-carte. Just like veteran players that missed out on logging in. However I can’t a-la-carte the “bundle”.
It’s imbalanced and completely reasonable that a fan base would react poorly to this pricing and marketing.
If the veteran players were awarded something even as simple as $10 worth of gems (the lowest price charged for GW2 Core) we all likely would have paid the $50 price tag.
Why isn’t this an “expansion”? Check the wikipedia page. This is actually an “expandalone”.
What else was an expandalone? Factions and Nightfall. So let’s compare those.
(skills, weapons, and armor skins had some overlap that would take a lot of time to sort)
If you bought Factions without previous GW1 Core:
character slots: 4
regions: 0 Core + 4 New
missions: 0 Core + 22 New
classes: 6 Core + 2 New
guild halls: 0 Core + 4 New
If you bought GW1 Core without Factions:
character slots: 4
regions: 6 Core + 0 New
missions: 25 Core + 0 New
classes: 6 Core + 0 New
guild halls: 8 Core + 0 New
purchased both:
character slots: 6
regions: 6 Core + 4 New
missions: 25 Core + 22 New
classes: 6 Core + 2 New
guild halls: 8 Core + 4 New
Now HoT:
If you bought HoT without previous GW2 Core:
character slots: 5
maps: 100% Core + 100% New
events: 100% Core + 100% New
classes: 8 Core + 1 New
guild halls: 0 Core + 2 New
if you bought GW2 Core:
character slots: 5
maps: 100% Core + 0% New
events: 100% Core + 0% New
classes: 8 Core + 0 New
guild halls: 0 Core + 0 New
purchased both:
character slots: 5
maps: 100% Core + 100% New
events: 100% Core + 100% New
classes: 8 Core + 1 New
guild halls: 0 Core + 2 New
So every item in the GW1 store (costumes, etc) was also an expansion because they expanded the title.
Then your definition of expansion is meaningless here. Goo job! It matters because people are using it as justification for why they deserve more character slots. Guess what? the original is Guild Wars: Prophecies. Titles are titles that means nothing for this discussion. There is a clear difference between Heart of thorns and christmas candy cane hammer skin. So how about we talk about actual game expansions?
It isn’t his definition of expansion. It is a commonly agreed upon one.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expansion_pack
Factions/Nightfall were both “expandalones”
by definition so is HoT. An expansion which includes the core game. In fact you can’t purchase the core game anymore (from the online shop).
since, by definition, HoT is in the same category as Factions/Nightfall drawing conclusions from their similarities and differences is quite reasonable.
What about veteran players that recently convinced friends to buy the core game in anticipation of the “expansion”? HoT isn’t an expansion by definition. It is much more like an “expandalone”. Even WoW waits years to fold an expansion into the core.
So you can read the wikipedia article on it, but the closest thing that HoT matches to is an “expandalone”.
This is what bothers me the most. Calling it an expansion was misleading. I convinced a couple of friends to buy the game to get familiar and start getting a character up in levels to be able to play the expansion. However, we aren’t getting one. What we have is the opportunity to buy the game again to unlock the new content.
With HoT I feel ashamed I recommended the game.
Just look at how WoW handled their expansions. It took years for them to fold the expansion into the core content. You had to buy the current core then the expansion. That’s how this whole DLC thing has been working for years, with games like RockBand. Buy the first game and it’s DLC, buy the expandalone of the second game. Because you bought the first game you have those songs and new players can still access all that same DLC.
Even GW1 to GW2 had loyalty rewards. Sure I might hardly ever use the mini pets or weapon skins I got (except the awesome fiery dragon sword), but I got them. Give me a commemorative weapon skin and a goofy HoT hat to go along side my GW2 hat in my character bank. Anything but making me feel like I’m paying for a game I’m already playing just to get new content.
Thank you Anet! I was able to play through and earn enough tokens to get what I wanted and then some.
I actually really like all of the changes to the wardrobe. I don’t really understand what on the back end made town clothes different from costumes but I didn’t really like the town clothes anyway. Too limited in looks.
The one thing I would like is the ability to change the view for weapons before applying a transmutation. I can’t tell what some weapons look like from the wardrobe.
Temporary content that leads up to the introduction of permanent content (like southsun).
The ability to relive previous highlights of living story through instanced content so new players aren’t forced to read a wiki to have a clue about the story and the ability to earn some skins themed to the previous season. Basically like fractals except not random and getting season tokens as rewards to spend on skins.
Permanently available new skins to acquire through playing the game not just BLTC…but I like those too.
golem’s as ranger pets. ;-)
corrupted sylvari enemies
ekimsfree – I don’t care about what other people have. There’s a particular look I’m going for with my character and I missed out on the perfect helm because I didn’t even know it existed reading the web page.
PattyCakeChamp. - I played a good bit this weekend but only had one successful run. I’ve collected enough to get the back piece up to exotic.
Alcyone – but many aren’t, including the one I’d like.
OK well my wife and I each managed to have a 1200 run, both got weapons we put up on the trading post for about 25 silver. Not really a great opportunity to get old LS items
I’ve made a few runs into LA but the best my server has ever done was 1000 citizens.
It was nice of them to give me A chance at getting older skins. However this is really hard, and only a random chance. They removed tireless dungeon farming from the game design and put it back into the LS.
In general I like the idea of the living story. I actually like the idea of non-permanent content and a changing world with some permanent content changes.
However I’m a working adult with a family and one thing I always loved about GW1 was how much it was able to cater to the casual gamer that I am.
At the moment however I find myself logging in after a hiatus to discover that I missed out on some cool looking backpiece or other armor item. It isn’t too dissimilar from the holiday hats and minis of GW1 except for the frequency. I don’t want to cheapen the experience and achievement of having participated when the content was live but it might be worth considering giving some sort of second chance at the armor and weapon rewards. “Missed out on earning this for free? Just pay some gems and get it now!”
I recently discovered I missed out on a gas mask helm that would fit my character perfectly.
The gathering tools and this salvage kit were never made so you could break even I love how people say this over and over. Its not about how many times till you get your moneys worth. It is and always will be about convenience. You have to decide if it is worth it to you. If not, well then no reason to complain about it. That’s just my take on it.
Gathering Tools Saving: 8 copper per use, or 650 stacks
Gathering Tool Other: Doesn’t use an inventory slot, Cool Animation, Highest Level Kit, No Cost to use, Soulbound
Salvage-o-matic Saving: .5 copper per use, or 20,000 stacks
Salvage-o-matic Other: Uses an inventory slot, Voice, Lowest Level Kit, Costs to use, Accountbound
So I’m trading kit level, cost, cool factor, and an inventory slot for accountbound rather than soulbound…hmmmmm….no thanks.
i use basic salvage kit
i use 3-4 stacks per day
1 stack cost 88 copper (not ore)
this kit cost 25 gold
how many years i must play before i brake even ?71023 salvages
around 710 days :P
How did you arrive at that? This is what I figured:
Each use of basic salvage kit is 3.5 copper pieces
Each use of copper fed…blah is 3 copper pieces
.5 copper savings per use
1 silver = 100 copper
1 gold = 100 silver
25 gold =250,000 copper
to save 25 gold is 500,000 uses
4 salvage kits would be 100 uses per day
5,000 days
unless I futzed something up
also basic salvage kits are only 77 karma
First off let me say that I really enjoyed this mini game. It felt like the GW2 version of Mario Kart. If the content and achievement was going to stick around for a while I’d consider being competitive 100% of the time. People have different skill levels of play. The Halloween Clocktower JP was incredibly hard, and challenging. I played that for a lot longer to beat, and there was no ability for players to help players. However here I feel like I can help people enjoy the game and get less frustrated whether it’s them or their internet connection preventing them from winning.
To all those saying “do it yourself” I have to wonder how many of you found all the kites and crystals on your own and how many looked up guides and wiki. Maybe you should start a campaign to have all the helpful and informative content removed from the internet so all the players have the same challenges and have to take their own notes. In fact you should probably get rid of Team Speak and Chat because people might talk to each other and give advice….sheesh
