That’s the problem, they spread out the ideas too much. Preparations should have stayed with the ranger. Something like glass arrows where you deal more per arrow but if blocked it inflicts bleed would be quite amazing. Actually most of the preparations back then were amazing.
Now they just nerf bat the ranger and spread all of the good stuff to other classes. Which is why I’m not hyped quite yet for Druid, knowing Anet we will end up being kitten version of Guardian. If that happens then we are up crap creek as we won’t get another specialization pass for who knows how long.
Something tells me we will need 500 crafting and possibly the ascended weapon of that type. It only makes sense.
The term specialization does not lend itself to subtraction. That is, if you are something and you specialize in something, you are still what you were before but exceptionally good in one area.
Colin made mention of ‘almost like a secondary profession’. If this is the case, in GW1, you never lost anything by taking on a secondary…you only gained more options.
So I hope it works like a trait line, or pretty much how it does in most other games. Basically…think build templates.
I like the Druid concept, but support has never been a huge focus of the game…so not sure how much I am hyped yet.
The one Attack we saw was a trail of vines. We know what Rangers do with Vines already in this game. I think its safe to say that while Druids will have a lot of support, there’s going to be a lot of cc as well.
Hopefully cc that ignores the 5 man aoe limit (the same way veil and line of warding does) so that we will find a place in GvG and zergs.
Yeah, if we can get an Entangle that ignores the limit that would be awesome. Hopefully make it so its a little harder to escape from as well…that is, if you get hit with vine beam, you should stay rooted even if you stealth.
A return of preparations would be what makes me the happiest. I’m not sure if we will ever see it though.
Yeah, balance is about to go out the window again. Also, something about heavy armor ritulist sounds OP…
I like the Druid concept, but support has never been a huge focus of the game…so not sure how much I am hyped yet.
Not sure I love the ‘jungle ability’ concept. The rest of it sounds cool though.
Ape **** = Cantha!
Cloth seems easier to come by in WvW. That is of course if your server flips things regularly.
1. Build Templates
2. Ranger Preparations
3. New Ranger Pets
4. Horizontal Progression
5. New Armor
Before the quickness nerf, quickness on pet swap nerf and SB range nerf, i was running a fun mostly-power SB build for wvw. Can’t remember all the details but it was based on Piercing Arrows, Steady Focus, Hunter’s Tactics, pet swap for regular quickness, and a set of rune with additional flanking damage (possibly Thief runes).
So with full stamina and flanking, that was a neat +30% damage to piercing 1200 range arrows that caused bleeds on autoattacks, with pet-swap for on-demand quickness.
Not sure what it’s worth these days, since the 300 lost range is a big deal in wvw, quickness has been nerfed by half, and pet-swap quickness is insanely costly now.
Moving Zephyr’s Speed from a 5 point investment to the full 30 (or 1 point to 6 point by today’s standards) is probably my most hated of all the Ranger nerfs.
SB being nerfed so that LB could be less awful (ANets logic) is a close second. You are right about WvW, I cannot tell you how many times someone has escaped with a sliver of life because I get out of range’d…or even worse, randomly obstructed then out of range.
Man I really, really miss the original days of the Ranger. Just simple stuff like sending your invisible Jaguar half way across the BL map to absolutely own someone. Or the absolute death dual birds used to be….
Yes to exotic pets. Rock Dogs, Sparks, Skelks…so many options that we cannot use.
Or GW1 pets…black wolf, white tiger, black widow (without j-lo butt), phoenix…
SB + A/T or SB + A/D if you want evades.
Then you spec for either toughness or vitality. If toughness, then I agree with Siobhan, if vitality then you could run dire and eat rare veggie pizza. I do this and have 24k health, 2.4k toughness, 1.6k condition damage (with 25 corruption stacks) and 50% condition duration (unless bleeds, as I run Krait so its slightly more than 50% duration on those).
For pets, dual canine or canine + bird works well. Cats are nice too, but they die rather fast. I’d stay away from bears and devourers (unless going in a dungeon then devourer is ok). Drakes may be an option, I’m not a huge fan from an aesthetic point.
I think LB + A/A may be the absolute worst setup. Even worse than LB/SB as A/A contradicts itself due to MH being condi and OH being power.
So in short, LB + A/A will drive you to AA.
So currently running a fairly standard condition build. I am also running antitoxin runes, however since I switched over to nature magic line, condition removal has not been as much of a problem.
So to keep it simple, I am debating:
- Staying with antitoxin runes
- Switching to Krait (torment may or may not be useful depending on Elite I’d think)
-Traveler (could swap signet of hunt for something else…)
I liked antitoxin as I could get over 50% reduction on conditions with food in WvW, however switching it for something else would also allow me to use other food, or just keep the food (lemongrass) and go with the ~40% reduction.
I guess I may run into more advanced players then. Just from my perspective as a Ranger, I have so many ways to clear conditions that I’ll never stay Entangled unless I am half asleep.
I agree the main benefit of it is the pairing with SOTF and the survival trait. I still do not see it as an Elite, more of a utility that you can just throw out there. Basically I see it as a slightly more powerful MT.
Anyway, Entangle is horrible IMO. I do love when other Rangers carry it though…one quick LR and they just wasted an elite.
Or you just wasted LR. They’re on similar cooldowns, but many rangers only carry a single stun breaker or immob cleanser. Every now and then I’ll kill some noob with no cleanse at all using entangle, but for the most part I chain it together with a half dozen CCs to secure the kill.
Drakehound + MT is like the noob test for people that want to fight you 1v1. If they can’t get past 900 range without getting aced, well…
I guess possibly if you are in the middle of it and are not paying attention then you could face a little trouble. If are paying any bit of attention it isn’t all that hard to avoid IMO.
Better than Aquaman patch I guess. I still want meaningful changes…like a reduction in cooldown on RaO or making Loud Whistle a default to improve pet usage.
I don’t see why that is a fluff argument. When you are stealthed, you are invisible…not invulnerable. As in, if you walk on something like Lava…visible or not, you are going to die.
Same SHOULD apply to Entangle. It’s a plant so it could care less what it is grabbing, but visible or not, you are getting grabbed.
Anyway, Entangle is horrible IMO. I do love when other Rangers carry it though…one quick LR and they just wasted an elite.
“I mained mine and it was my first 80 and only character I played for months)”
This implies two things. A short playtime, and that you switched to playing something else. That is, you already know what you are asking for.
Thanks. Yeah it was odd to me as when I right-clicked I couldn’t get a party invite, but I have been invited to a few parties by enemies (both ‘good fights’ and random abuse).
How is this possible?
Ranger needs a scythe. We need one class to represent Dervish, and Ranger should be it.
One archive link, many sub-forums under it. If this is not a viable solution then I sense something else is at play here other than ‘cleaning up’.
This thread. My eyes.
Also, OP is a Warrior sympathizer. That should tell you all you need to know about trolls and what happens when you feed them.
Blame the devs for making PvE berserker only. I would run with whatever, it’s PvE…you can’t lose, only do things slightly slower.
SB isn’t a power weapon.
I want to know what happens when they dodge the burst.
You can see that, i`ll upload a roaming video in this weekend, meanwhile you can watch

Nice. I like those types of videos more as they give a good idea what happens if you don’t immediately floor the enemy.
I want to know what happens when they dodge the burst.
The 60s pet cool-down is ridiculous. Loud Whistle needs to be a default IMO.
Yep, I definitely have to work on keeping poison on people. Especially important as I have the poison master GM. I used to run an axe/dagger sword/torch BM build and kept poison on through use of quick pet swaps and the respective melee skills.
So my rhythm is a bit thrown off not having loud whistle…I really wish that was just default pet behavior.
PBS needs to be changed to knockdown, not knockback.
It is 2/0/6/6/0 with Poison Master and Survival of the Fittest GM’s. Only other traits of note are Vigorous Renewal and Evasive Purity.
Using basically a mix of dire and carrion, slightly more power actually as my power sits at 1,800 and condition damage at 1,300. Though condition damage can go up if I’m carrying stacks from corruption sigil. I usually just eat mango pies and have tuning crystal so probably looking at ~1,980 power and ~1,650 condition damage at 25K health with WvW buffs and full 25 stacks from corruption sigil.
Also using runes of antitoxin so I don’t have to run EB. If I really want immunity to conditions I’ll run poultry and leek soup, although that gets expensive and usually isn’t necessary.
Finally, I run wolf and owl as wolf is almost mandatory and owl is my only source of chill outside of weapon swapping.
If I had money I might switch out antitoxin runes with traveler, and replace signet of hunt with signet of stone. The ‘oh crap’ button signet of stone provides is nice, however with WvW I can’t give up the 25% speed. Even in battle, I do horribly without it as I can’t kite as well.
EDIT: Also I use RaO over Entangle as Entangle never seems to work for me. RaO gives nice damage increase with stability…just have to watch for corruptions and steals obviously.
Here’s my first attempt at a montage video:
Without seeing a video, it is hard to take sides on this one. I know, I get that I’m on the Ranger forum and I also main a Ranger, however there is some merit to the thief’s replies.
Also about the RF thing, more whispers come from thieves as they do not have an ‘lol invuln’ button that warriors, guardians, and even other Rangers have.
I already know the response by saying this but…players really need to learn that GW2 is not defined by one specific game mode. It might be annoying to you, but the game is geared so that at least two game modes are played (PvE + WvW or PvE + sPvP at least).
By playing more than one game mode, the daily comes without even thinking about it.
Also, you cannot bring back the old choices for dailies and keep the current reward structure. At the very least they would have to add some; ex: “do any world boss”, “daily logger”, etc.
TBH, I think you derailing this thread to promote your own thread is far worse than this thread possibly being a ‘duplicate’.
BTW, the only one being off-topic here is you.
cause most rangers can’t actually play ranger most go LB/GS cause they have no clue of the class mechanic, i myself despise any form of bow on ranger, i roll Sword/torch axe/dagger with some survival utilities and no i am not condi regen ranger nor celestial cause celestial itself needs a nerf
EDIT: and they have no potential in WvW thats why most guilds despise em, solo roaming they’re fine ,zerging nope
Maybe not zerging, but we are quite effective in havoc groups.
Ranger hate is quite simply because of the longbow and ‘challenged’ AI. Community is non-helpful as a majority want to play bear sniper.
Problem is that thread was last posted in 2 months ago, so to post in it now would be a bit of a necro. In any case, I did read the history section:
Crossfire: Inflict bleeding from all directions. (Or increase duration/stacks of bleeding)
Seems fine, but would quickly get lamented as OP since with the fire rate of short bow it’d be easy to keep at least 10+ stacks of bleed on someone at all times. I’d rather keep the positional requirement and increase damage coefficient of the skill.
Concussion Shot: Daze 2 second if hit from front. Daze 3 seconds if hit from sides or behind.
I personally do not have an issue with concussion shot at the moment. If anything, keep the 1s daze and make it unblockable. For me, it’s primary purpose is an interrupt, which 1s will do just fine.
Poison Volley: Fire a posionous arrow that explodes on target and poison it for 8 seconds and adjacent enemies for 4 seconds. Blast finisher.
I agree with the poison field idea. Basically, make it like thief’s choking gas. Increase damage of it a bit also to keep with the dev’s vision for Rangers being ‘masters of poison’.
Quick Shot: Increase the range slightly (by ca 50). Increase swiftness to 5 seconds. Always gain swiftness.
Quick shot is fine IMO. Increase the range and you increase the liklehood of flying off cliffs. Always gain swiftness might be a bit much also as then people would just spam it for that reaason. I could see potentially adding a 3s chill effect though, so they move slower, you move faster. Cooldown is about the same as winter’s bite, so no OP cries.
Crippling Shot: Increase cripple to 5 seconds.
I’d rather replace the pet’s next three attacks inflict bleeding with something. Not sure what though.
It’s more complicated than almost all other mobility skills in the game. My point being, Ranger isn’t a beginner class. It’s sadly built to look like one, but to really play one with any effectiveness you have to watch more than most.
The biggest con is that we have pro/con threads. The Ranger has to be the class with the most misinformed players, and if you want facts, look no further than the ‘bearbow’ stereotype.
Also, 25% movement speed isn’t mobility. GS IMO is a subpar weapon, so the only mobility we have is sword. I hesitate to call that mobility as I have never seen anyone actually doing the trick, as it requires two precise about faces (or macros). Run any other weapon and your mobility is lightning reflexes…which isn’t meant for mobility.
But honestly, it saddens me a bit to see the beginner stereotype attached to Rangers. Maybe for PvE…but really, is it possible to be bad at PvE? Go to WvW, and you become the target, 100% of the time. Even if you are 1v1, have fun stalemating shatter mesmers or slip up once and get facerolled by a hambow. That’s the Ranger.
The knockdown works wonderfully if you swap between two canines. Of course, this requires pretty heavy investment into Beastmastery so you can get loud whistle.
Though, now I really want a pet skelk and watch it shadowstep to put torment on people or something.
I would like one of the skills to have a chill, perhaps the one that currently gives your pet’s next three attack’s bleed. I think this would keep the bow competitive with the axe for condition specs.
I would also like to see poison volley be an AOE cloud like thief has. Or Ranger shortbow to get any form of AOE at all really, as to my knowledge its the only shortbow without one?
What amazes me, is a pretty amazing map was made with varied environments and then quickly polluted to blur the line between PvE and WvW by putting farmable champs everywhere.
To make it worse, it counts for pretty much zero on a WvW level since it doesn’t help your PPT totals.
Solution seems simple, shake up the existing WvW areas to include more variety in terrain and objectives, and get rid of the champs in EOTM.
Because really, EOTM isn’t exactly PvE or PvP, it’s a glorified overflow lobby.
Before: SAB
After: SAB is too fantastical for a fantasy world. It must be eliminated!
The super specific requirements are the worst IMO. Even though I couldn’t care less about daily achievement points, I do understand that it sucks for people who do. You know, since there is a whole reward based platform based off achievement points, not to mention leader boards (if they still exist).
This is the best sentence in that whole thread: "First thing to do is to kindly remind them (as polite as you can be) that EOTM is not a WvW area – it’s for k-trains. "
I’m no power trader, but Mini Teq was mine. Bought 2 of them for 15g ea expecting the price to rise at least a little due to the new mini-dedication removing them from circulation. They instead deflated to half of that price as of today.
