Explain to me, why it does not affect server performance? I’m waiting.

I love how people always throw out DaoC as in some kind of “but it worked before!” card, failing to realize that DaoC graphics are just a joke.
I always stay to defend and build siege to help with defense, but it doesn’t help since I’m mostly alone with few others bothering.
Anyone have any info how this is achieved? I just wish someone who knows more about this could open up a little, this is awful practice and should be stopped asap.
So I thought pvp in this game was supposed to be skill based? What a joke!

sPvP is the thing you’re looking for.
Sounds somewhat good. It’s a pain to try defend a tower with small force even with great deal of siege weapons as long as the attacking force is huge, it makes staying to defend with few friends feel like waste of time. The attackers will come through that door, no matter how well you try to defend and usually it’s pretty quick since doors won’t hold at all against 15+ players.

But I do see the models and so will most when it gets fixed.
Desolation has no real guild presence in WvW. There’s like max two guilds that try to WvW seriously, but even they haven’t been on much.

This. I didnt knew Darkfall supported that many people on screen, but it did. It came out WAY before GW2 and it had more complex combat system, in a sense that weapon collision was true (not like in GW2 where its part reallistic collision, part still direct targeting like WoW does) for both melee and ranged weapons, magic had complex effects (drag you towards a black hole, kick you upwards, knock you back, levitate you and hold you in place, etc) and so on. And yet, no limit on amount of people, and huge zergs clearly supported without disappearance. And btw, Darkfall: UW (aka Darkfall 2010 aka Darkfall 2.0) is releasing 20 november this year, and i doubt it will intoduce ridiculous “culling”, you can bet your money it will display all players on screen. It features rich 3 faction pvp too, btw. Wink wink
It also looks like crap, no thank you.

I can understand that completely but they don’t see it if you are invisible either ;-)
And that is why we are waiting for a fix, instead of moaning about the issue when it’s already acknowledged. ;-)

Imagine if you had a legendary and wanted to show it off in WvW. Would you be happy with enemies seeing a generic sword model?
Definitely not.

Except it’s been done before & better. Displaying more than 30 players in a battle is not a new, difficult problem that ArenaNet is pioneering a solution for.
But not with the graphical fidelity that’s present in GW2. All games I’ve seen having large battles run smoothly and players shown from long distances, have been with very mediocre graphics and models with hardly any complex animations. You either take outlook of a game from 5 years back and have large battles without problems, or you take this what we have now until it get’s some adequate fix.

I dont see how modern hardware cannot support 500 players on one map, or 200 characters on one screen.
That is exactly the reason I find it funny that people like you come demand everything to be fixed without actually knowing what goes around inside computers. The amount of data that transfers from hdd to cpu/gpu renderer and off to display is massive, which cannot be done easily no matter how ‘fast’ your computer is. To account to that there is the way how client gets it’s info about players, which is tied to networking which is also a very complex thing.

Too bad not many understand the architecture of CPU/GPU/memory management and use, and as such, will never understand that getting something like big scale PvP to work flawlessly for every party involved, is pretty much impossible. I will gladly keep playing while waiting for a fix or workaround for this problem, because I know, no game has yet done it in a ‘acceptable’ way.

I’d take the render nameplates as a quick fix. Though I’ve got used to the problem and I’ve learned to adapt: move more cautiously. Too many times do I see a zerg just going forward with no regard to anything, no caution, no scouts, full speed & only interested in getting to kill something.
I made the same choise as Slamz. Speccing in sPvP is easy and fast, so that’s that. But with PvE and WvW, you have to make a decision, which will you focus on? Sure you can make a build that works for both PvE and WvW, but anyone worth his salt in the field has thought about his build with WvW in mind. To my ease, the PvE build I run is not too much different from the WvW one.
Oh well, I gave in to the temptation and put my gold in for Human T3 shoulders. I know the price is ridiculous but it’s kind of the armor that I’ve been looking to get since the first BWE. Off to get wealth for the chest piece next…
I was thinking so much before putting up the money for the T3 Human Heavy shoulders, but I couldn’t get enough of the looks in preview and finally gave up. :P
“Some worlds will have issues finding enough people to be on during certain hours, but you also don’t need a lot of people to defend or take things back during low population hours.”
Sure, we at Desolation could just go on and go cap everything back during low population hours… except we don’t have enough to do that and the Vizunah certainly does at those hours. So our only viable time to contribute to a fight is when it can be even, which is on day peak hours.
Is it reasonable? How many have you seen running around with full set or just few pieces? I like the look of it, but the price seems really daunting.
Thanks Harrier, info like this is appreciated.
Doing that alone seems kind of daunting, but I’ll try.
Hi,
What is the best way to find out when our server has the least presence around all 4 maps? I don’t have time to stay around 24 hours in-game to check the times when I can get instantly to Borderlands maps and/or EB. I’m planning on making a lookup about when we are on our weakest and maybe start planning to get something done for those times.
And then someone ran past you with the invis buff.
WvW night capping/whining/unbalance can be solved with a fairly easy fix.

But it’s nearly impossible to get people to transfer exactly to your server depending on situations.
Some people are not going to wait for months to have fun. I’m not talking about myself here, I can have fun everytime I log-in and jump to WvW, but others don’t have the same mindset. Unfortunate, for them.
we have players on the EU servers from other timezones. they joined on purpose to abuse this issue. they can recap everything at night while the majority is sleeping and during the primetime when they sleep the normal playerbase of the server will defend their work.
How dare people WvWvW when you are asleep!
Seriously, do you not understand that 24×7 battlegrounds means that this a perfectly valid tactic? It is not abusing anything. If your server cannot or will not form your own night crew then the ranking system will eventually pit you against other servers that also share your weaknesses.
Why can’t it be done already? I think it’s pretty obvious from current scorings that some servers shouldn’t be together.
So I’m left with moving to a top server, if I want to be on a top server.
Why exactly do you feel the need to be on a top server? Not everyone can be the best, and the best server now won’t necessarily be the best server 6 months from now.
I like to fight with and against the best, it’s just more interesting in every possible way. I can’t have that soon unless I jump servers.
That’s fair enough in a way, but lets say you move to a top server now and then later on it starts to drop in the rankings. Do you then go and move again? Wouldn’t it be more rewarding to do your bit to help a server climb in the rankings rather than jump on the bandwagon a join a server that has already achieved its position?
You also seem to have a perception that good pvp can only occur on the top servers. Personally I think that good pvp can and will occur anytime there is a balanced matchup.
It depends on the servers interest in WvW. As of now, I can feel very heavily how my server has absolutely no interest in WvW, even though we are matched against the top at the moment. So we will fall down and most likely matched against someone that’s more equal with us in terms of time diversity. Knowing that some of the most talented RvR people play on my opposing server right now, it’s kind of saddening I will most likely not be able to fight them again.
Personal skill has very little to do with success in WvWvW. There’s the fact that organisational skill is much more important, there’s the night capping issue and there’s the issue of how willing people are to spend their money and how much money they even have. The server actually being good at the game doesn’t really figure into it. If you want a truly competitive arena, you’re sadly going to have to look somewhere else, at least for now.
“The server actually being good at the game doesn’t really figure into it.” I wasn’t necessarily talking about that? By good I mean: people that know what they’re doing, invest game currency and focus on getting their objective done.
So I’m left with moving to a top server, if I want to be on a top server.

“Move to a better 24h covered server” Yeah, sure.
The top US servers didn’t adopt that attitude, they went and recruited guilds to cover 24hrs.
If you run around with a glass is half empty attitude then you will almost always lose to people with the half full attitude.
I’m not very charismatic person, could you tell me how I can persuade people to move to a full populated and 3rd in their match, to come over here to help? I don’t see it being realistically possible, for guilds interested in WvW to come make things right for us. So what am I left with?
If you can’t get an off peak team then ultimately you will be matched against other servers that are in the same boat. That’s why there is a ranking system.

A server can never be top no matter how skilled or good players they’ve got if they don’t have a night presence. That’s what makes some people salty, the fact that their skills and their activity gets no credit at all.
“Move to a better 24h covered server” Yeah, sure.
No, they should be bought with the most valuable currency: gold. It needs to be high priced too, since they’re supposed to be kind of ‘prestige’. I’ve been saving for the first piece for a while now (shoulders) and will never accept any change to their acquisition.
You night players seem to be so entitled. “Come later to fight our night teams” as if everyone could actually do that. And you almost act like sleeping is some sort of a crime in “hardcore” scene.
I’m from Desolation and I don’t feel too bothered about this. Sure it sucks that we can never be top since our 24h coverage isn’t up to par, but at least there’s a lot to fight for. I never liked seeing the pie covered wholly by our server in other matchings because it always meant that there’d be less interesting fights going on. Hopefully things will balance over time but it’s not the end of the world as it is, it’s just a tougher fight for us.
Start using Siege Weapons.
Looking at enemy buff icons is so hard.
Yes, wait for things to balance out, no use complaining something that’s in it’s baby steps.
Well I really hope they don’t fix it by making retalation useless, when I have used quite a bit of time to try and make my build based on it.
What I don’t understand is, why did the ‘hardcore’ RvR community decide to stick to one server? Isn’t that just totally stupid in terms of giving the game some value from community?
