Your ideas are reasonable and you took the time to outline what would be a rewarding drop table. Kudos to you!
Can you grab a UI designer and find out more about the challenge of doing this?
Sorry. It’s being looked into right now, but I’m not a part of that process and there really isn’t anything to talk about yet.
I knew it would be our fault again! Germany: Ruining everybody’s experience since 1871!
Now, now. We <3 our German players. Nobody ruined anything; I just meant that each language has its own considerations that can affect our character display limits. Being concise is always a goal, anyway.
When I started on the writing team a few years ago, my teammates suggested I try out Twitter because its 140 character format forces you to find ways to communicate things more succinctly.
Oh, one more thing: sorry for threadjacking this discussion so badly :/
i lol’ed at the “tight meat” thing with my name on it. i was however trying to give serious feedback in a constructive way and if all you can do is bring up the “tight meat” part, well, that’s disappointing. would have been nice to at least get a serious response to go with the laugh is all I am saying.
I think you as devs, writers, artists, QA etc. live in such a safe bubble of other creatives there at ArenaNet that it’s easy to lose perspective. minor plot mysteries shouldn’t take over a year to suss out. People leave the company and then stories change because maybe the writer that replaced the one that left has different places they want to take the story and then the playerbase misses out on something they were anticipating. It happened a lot in GW1, and because the precedent was set in that game, I fear it will happen here too.
The story has gotten better since last year, but there are other areas where quality and quantity have dropped off sharply.
On a less serious note: Wanna join my guild, Armor Made From Baby Quaggans [SOFT]? :P
This isn’t a thread to discuss this year’s Toypocalypse. This isn’t a dev/player bashing thread. This is a place to suggest what we would like to see for next year’s Toypocalypse.
I for one would like to see the return of parties in Toypocalypse next year. I would like to see communication about it be better than this year’s version of communication. We were told that Wintersday this year was going to be exactly like last year. That simply just wasn’t the case.
I would like to see ArenaNet step up their efforts for holidays next year. In my opinion, this was the worst year for Festivals in the history of Tyria(GW1 or GW2). It’s too bad, because even though it was a poor showing, ArenaNet’s festivals are still the best ones in all of gaming! You can’t rest on your laurels though. There wasn’t a dragon bash this year and that was disappointing.
TL;DR If you can fix Toypocalypse for next year, please do so! If you can’t, then I would like a new activity be designed so that parties have something fun to do again to replace what can’t be fixed
Leave your 2015 Toypocalypse suggestions below!
One step forward and two steps back is true.
The Game Before
Two Greens and a Blue
The Game Now
Two Blues and a Green
The proof is irrefutable.
This was far and away the main draw for the guildies and me regarding the Wintersday event. Massively disappointed with this change.
Hopefully they can make the necessary changes to revert it back to last year’s format.
Thanks to everyone posting here, please keep it respectful!
As one of said friends of Pixels, I totally agree. This is a terrible change. You guys dropped the ball with this big time.
I remember when you did the update for gold being account bound instead of per character, we lost the ability to put gold in our personal bank. Martin Kerstein had posted about using a “personal guild bank” as a quick fix. Sorry, I could find the link to that. Is there an actual fix coming anytime soon or is the personal guild bank a final solution?
There’s 2 different boxes, ones that just give you random and one that let’s you choose.
But yea, I too would like the Choose one to be gone, especially since you have to click yet another confirmation-box for it, which is annoying, unneeded and crashed my client about 5 times yesterday, so I don’t even open them anymore.
Bottom line: Too many clicks needed for all those things.
Totally. I throw them away. They aren’t worth the time.
The Wintersday Green Rune/Sigil boxes are the epitome of cumbersome design for the player. Just give us a rune or a sigil when we open a gift. Thanks.
My issue with it now is the communication of it. I posted a thread about this a week ago. There is still no answer and we are all just here speculating. When changes to the game happen, it should be clearly explained. That’s my opinion and it feels reasonable to have changes be clearly and concisely explained.
I don’t get it really. They announced that their will be a change we just had to wait a week to see all the specific when the update was launch today. They could explain everything when they announce things, but why? Why do you absolutely need to know the exact amount of laurel you gonna have with the new system that’s gonna be launched a week later? Especially, since we already knew that they were gonna give use Laurels in the log-in reward.
I saw your post. You didn’t die for waiting for a week to get your answer didn’t you? It’s not like Anet don’t have much post asking question right? It would been nice if a dev or somebody from anet would have gave you quick answer. You will have around the same amount of laurel, no the price won’t change, no item will be added or removed. (I honestly don’t know about the karma yet.)
But in the end, its not a big deal, its only a week.
Why the hyperbole? All I have said is that they should explain changes to the game. That’s it. You guys start mentioning dying from waiting etc.
- If they were to change how a skill works, it should be in the patch notes. When they changed glory in pvp, it was in the patch notes. I think a change to laurels and karma distribution should be in the patch notes.
It’s just opinions.
Yup, 35 laurels per 28 days. We’ll see what’s the amount of laurel in the 28th day, but with the old system you had 485 laurels per year, now you have kitten laurels per year (excluding the reward on the 28th days. So my guess is that you could have something like 700-750 laurels in a year if you always choose the laurel chest every 28th day, which is a lot more than it used to be.

Are you the only one that didn’t see this page? —> https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/introducing-the-new-daily-achievement-system/
That was posted on Dec 10. Why are you still complaining about this?
Because they have changed a system and omitted the numbers from the announcement and the patch notes. What is our karma gain per month now? What is our Laurel gain per month? All I am saying is that it should be clearly and concisely explained and I said it reasonably.
No need to erupt, Vesuvius.

It’s nice that people have started putting things that they’re completely making up in bold lettering.
LOL so true! Yeah kittenes me off to no end how people state imaginary ideas as facts.
In a later post I said, “My bad”. I explained myself poorly in that first post and then clarified what I meant. I compared this system now on consecutive logins to consecutive logins in the past.
It has not to be consecutive.
My bad. I have been asking how this stuff is going to work for a week and have gotten more info from players than ArenaNet. I guess if you leave everyone confused there’s less complaining to deal with.
So under the old system, if I logged in for consecutive days and finished the monthly, I could have 30 laurels on the 20th day. With this system if you decide to login 20 consecutive days you would have 25. At the end of 30 days under the old system you would have 40 laurels(all dailies+ monthly). With the new system, how many would it be? What about karma? I love how in the blog post last week they conveniently left out the numbers. Stuff like this should be clearly explained in the patch notes. It’s not though. It’s a convoluted mess.
You get more laurels from the new system than the old one, have a good look at the daily login calendar and you’ll see that.
Apparently 1 laurel per day on login too.
If you login every day you do. With the old system you could play 20 days out of the month and get the monthly done and you would have 30 laurels. With this system you would get 25(?) but it has to be consecutive days logging in. I guess the flipside is you don’t have to do anything except login and it gives ArenaNet the ability to release metrics to the gaming press about “X” number of logins per month. So there’s that.
On the whole I am rather indifferent/turned off by the new system, but I could totally see how some people would like it. To me it’s just another change that didn’t need to happen whilst stuff that should have happened ages ago still hasn’t come and they won’t talk about it.
This is really disappointing from an “information” standpoint. This should have been in the patch notes. It feels like closed communication is spreading to even post release of a feature. Unless I do my daily every day, this is a net nerf. A change this significant should have been communicated. Period. There’s no excuse for it not being included somewhere. Step it up.
So I look in the patch notes and there is nothing there regarding this. Can I please have an answer to this question now since the patch is live?
I think threads in the story linger too long(EX: Caithe’s secret, that sylvari dude that no one knows where he’s from, “E”, etc.)for their own good. I think it would work if the LW didn’t take breaks, but with the breaks it really harms the continuity. If breaks are this unavoidable thing, I would suggest having whole storylines be sussed out in a given season segment. Sure, leave a taste of what is going to start in the next chunk after a break, but this last bit has felt like 3 totally different stories(Zephyr dude and dragon egg, Caithe, Mordy). Caithe’s story was supposed to hint to us as to where Caithe would be going with the egg, but there really was no “why” she did it.
I almost feel like if you guys want to keep using this method of content delivery it should be handled more like a sitcom or tv drama where the whole story happens over 1 episode and then it’s done. Otherwise, I totally feel like an expansion is the better form of delivery because the player can play it at his or her own pace, or at the very least, have 1 episode be the content of 3-4 episodes of what we have now and do less of them over the course of a year.
I will say one of my favorite parts of this second half of the season is the ditching of the cotton candy romance between Jory and Kas. Their relationship works a lot better now. There aren’t any cringe-inducing discourses between them and it’s a breath of fresh air.
- Rytlock jumps down a hole. Community gets a few teaser images about him on social media but we have gotten zero story about him up to this point. That’s frustrating. When you teased the first image of him, how were we not to assume that the next episode was about him?
- Jory imbues soul of sister in sister’s sword. Seems important. Nothing happens with it.
- The Pact is all hands on deck to go after Mordy and it just stalled out. The season was set up by you guys to give us the impression that we were going after the dragon and we skipped around plot points so much I forgot that was what was really happening. Is it about Mordremoth? Is it about the egg? Is it about Caithe’s secret? Is Rytlock on to something and does it have anything to do with what our character’s are doing? I guess I just feel like nothing is cohesively put together.
The cutscene for Jory and her sister was amazing. The library and time with Ogden was dope! Glint’s lair was incredible! Seriously. It has all been top-notch in that regard. Silverwastes is a gorgeous map. There are these great flashes of brilliance in the story this season. They just feel so disjointed is all. I have no problem with a mystery if I can follow it, but it’s been really hard to follow because there are so many threads that feel so disconnected from each other. I am sure it will all be tied up neatly though. It just needs to be tighter during the meat of the rising action and tension and body of the story for it to work as a complete thing.
Or you could just design a game called, “Killing Harmless Creatures in a Room, Alone.”
Fun tip: Put the gem in an Ancient Karka Shell. It remains account bound so you can pass it between all your characters. http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Ancient_Karka_Shell
Well, when you nerf the amounts people can earn each month for karma and laurels, and the whining starts: Just remember: I told you so.
Have you guys met my Wolf, Blitzer?
Most likely what this change will do is make progression even slower and earning laurels even harder along with even less daily rewards. Every change ANET has made to gameplay has resulted in slowing progression to date without exception.
Wrong. leveling is now faster after the changes back in Sept..
With the exception of the trait system, I agree: leveling is much faster in a variety of ways. (The trait system makes things a lot slower, unfortunately.)
Actually the trait system change massively slowed down progression. It used to be you can purchase a single book for every single trait on a tier for cheap. Now it costs far more gold to purchase each trait individually along with the cost in skill points.
That’s literally what the post you’re quoting says.
I incorrectly interpreted your post.
The point is every major change ANET has released so far has been to slow progression.
The change to the traits and how they are purchased.
The time gated crafting.
The nerf to champions in a variety of zones.
The nerf to way dungeon tokens can be earned. (Used to be 1st time rewards for each character, not per account)
The mega server implementation which ruined ORR shrine boss rotation.Aside from EOTM there’s no change whatsoever to the rate at which you level in pve since release. Leveling is trivial anyway. I have 24 characters myself already and I could level more in a matter of days if I wanted and this was true 2 years ago when this game came out like it is now.
The real progression is in gearing ascended gear and obtaining legendaries and that’s where the slowdown in progression will happen when this patch goes live I bet.
I always amuse myself by imagining honest blog posts from ArenaNet. “Hey everyone! We are going to slow down progression in numerous areas. We are updating the UI for the feature as well, but we decided to take an honest approach and tell you about the changes behind the changes. You were all asking for dailies and monthlies to be more streamlined toward what you all like to do. So we did that. Except we decided to shave the drop rates. Enjoy!”
I want new things: classes, races, weapons, utility skills, elite skills, legendaries, maps, pvp modes, 500 chef and artificer, fractals, dungeons, the ability to parachute, and squirrel suits that are quaggan themed.
I understand(even though I don’t agree with it)that you want to remain silent about the stuff that you are working on until it’s ready. This is an entirely different type of silence and it’s one that really comes off as trite. I am going to call it the, “Smoke and Mirrors Announcement”.from now on. You show us this really cool change to how a system works, and then you lessen the reward.
I am assuming that the reward is being lessened or else I probably would have gotten a response to what is a fairly simple and straight forward query. If we were going to be getting the same amount of karma and laurels post update, a simple, “Karma and Laurels per month will remain unaltered” should be a reasonable thing to expect as an answer. From now on, I would love to suggest that you let players know in the announcement if something like a currency is being shaved and why the change is being made. This is one of the lacks of communication that players have been upset about in the past. Instead of having us find out about a change like this when we login foer the first time and see it in game, let us know why. Sure, we might not agree with it, but it’s honest and it communicates to us your intentions. I’m not asking you discuss it with us before it’s ready. I am asking you disclose it to us when you announce it. Otherwise, you leave us in the dark on a change you know we won’t be happy with and the only thing you are willing to show us are the features you think will make us happy not unlike a used car salesman.
Or maybe you could answer it yourself by going back and reading the entire article and examining each of the posted pictures…which give you and idea of how the rewards are distributed with the exception of the ‘month’ end reward box.
“an idea” of how rewards are distributed is not the same as reality. Maybe try reading the main post of this thread and then compare it with the article to see how many of the questions are actually answered transparently.
I mean, the blog posts for new features often conveniently leave out the downsides to the changes.
I am afraid this will be the case. I am tired of announcements showing off the shiny part but changing functionality that sometimes ends up detrimental to the playerbase. You streamlined it? Awesome! You lessened laurel rewards when there is only one way to acquire laurels? Not so awesome. Of course I am assuming since this is going completely unanswered that when the update hits many people will have the reaction I am having now, then. I really wish we could stop taking 1 step forward and two steps back with these updates. UI and functionality for the gem shop! Yes! Custom gem amounts? No! Community loses it! ArenaNet quickly fixes it! Yes! Hey look at the new ladders for pvp! Yes! We put Courtyard in ranked queue! What?
How about just putting in a new daily system that is more streamlined and leave the rewards alone?
With the new daily system coming soon, I had a few questions I wanted cleared up:
1.) As of right now in a 30-day month we have access to 40 laurels if we do every daily and finish the monthly. With the new system will we have access to more, less, or the same amount of laurels per month?
2.) Are prices of items at the laurel vendor changing when this update hits like the dyes did when the wardrobe and dye system was overhauled?
3.) Are any items being removed or added to the laurel vendor when this update hits?
4.) Will we still have access to the same amount of karma under the new system as we do now from daily/monthly completion?
Thanks for any responses you can provide.
If the system still gives us access to as many Laurels as before, then I am totally fine with it. If it changes to where we only can get say, 5 laurels on the 10th day and 5 laurels on the 20th day and they removed the 10 laurels for the monthly, then this is another case of 1 step forward and 2 steps back.
I remember when the entire orr farming was halted and the longer you killed mobs the worse the loot would get. I remember how the system worked before (getting consistant green loot items at all times) Vs after (getting more and more junk/nothing if you killed the same mob the second time or third time)
I still see this problem today. If i go farm skelks, i always get 1 or 2 T6 mats in the first 10 minutes. But after that it takes me around 30 minutes to even get 1 T6.
I see it at afking in LA for a long period of time after doing Silverwastes multiple days in a row versus a week not doing anything and suddenly get boots dropped in my inventory with the second bandit chest i open. While previously it took me over 500 chests to get one of these boxes.
I even see it at mining nodes with a watchwork pick, where the first few hauls of the day grant me atleast 1 or 2 but the last 10 dont grant me anything.
The entire anti farming mechanic is definatly still in the game at every event where mobs drop loot. It might be a bug in coding if Anet says its all RNG.
A lot of what ArenaNet has done with drops has been with how it’s presented and perceived. Something can look really enticing but when you really look at what it is it’s not all it’s cracked up to be. They did a great job with the token system for dungeons, but we still should have had a chance to get the weapons and armor as drops at the end of the dungeon. That way, if you dont get one as a drop, you can save up your tokens. Instead they went with a full on token system and then gated the tokens. I still would rather have a token system because it is surety for an item. I just get tired of the one step forward, two steps back approach though.
Honestly, Anet should cut out the middle man. They should add a gem store section to guildwars2.com. Why bother logging into the game when we could just buy gems straight off the website? Hell, why even have a game at all? There should just be a big quaggan-shaped button on the front page that transfers money from your bank account directly to Anet.
Meanwhile at ArenaNet HQ… the head of marketing just called a meeting to discuss this idea and figure out how to implement it as soon as possible.
I think it would be really cool if there was a way to ascend our Fractal weapons in the Mystic Forge that would add effects to the skins. The Fractal Backpiece has quite a few evolutions in style when you ascend it. I think the weapons should have the same feature that changes their appearance when you ascend them. I would love for my Fractal weapons to glow or get added animations.
Thoughts?
It would be good as long as the Legendary you make with it and the precursor were account bound on acquire. I really have no clue why ArenaNet haven’t already done this for precursors. That way, unlucky people get the precursor they are after but it doesn’t affect the market by reducing the value of the precursors or legendaries. Not many people would be willing to wait a year to get one. That is evidenced by the fact that people use their credit cards to buy precurors, T-6 mats, and even legendaries.
If we are still getting daily laurels and monthly laurels in the same amount as before and this system is adding more on top of what we are already getting then I am all about it. IF this new way reduces random gem shop daily drops or monthly drops are altered, then I will be ticked.
The daily login rewards will be awesome! I play Marvel Heroes and they have a daily login reward system and it’s great, so I am glad ArenaNet decided to add this feature. Thanks so much!
It stinks. The designers have come up with a brilliant map and mechanics. The map is dependent on playing it as intended though and that’s the issue. It’s like WvW. When they designed it, they designed thinking players would have loyalty to their server and feel a sense of camaraderie. Competitive players don’t have that though. They just want to win or they want to affect the outcome by thwarting the intentions of the designers or goals of the players. The same issue with Silverwastes affects WvW. SoR used to be a top server. People got tired of coming in 2nd or 3rd most weeks though and left. Now SoR is in dead last. It’s awful on all fronts, and doubly so because ArenaNet really did an amazing job with Silverwastes.
Great points all and I totally agree.
Another sterling example of bad RNG is having MF not affect Champ Boxes in PvE. I would almost rather go to Champs having an adjusted loot table that MF affected. No wonder you implemented the Champ Boxes. It wasn’t better for players. It was better for ArenaNet to gate magic find, thus lowering our RNG for champions. The fix should have just made Veteran and Champion drops better, because man were the drops non-existent from them for a year or so.
Yeah this really bothers me too.
The winter break is the best time to work on stuff like luminescent gear, too.
They really should have done 2 pieces of armor each update. Making us wait over a month to complete an armor set is poor form. Heck, I could grind out time-gated, raid, treadmill armor in LOTRO faster than what they are doing with the Lum. set.
I would love a line to be dropped to us simply stating, “We agree. It’s broken as is. We are rectifying it.”
This isn’t very well thought through. People used to flip out about ranks being next to the name. I have seen people flip out about having level 1’s on their team. Showing the MMR would just increase the ragey-ness needlessly. I can not wait for the dishonor system to work as the devs intend it to work. The 4v5’s are almost a thing of the past. With this new system, it’s all but gone when compared to how it used to be. Just wait until the matches start balancing themselves out and players are pitted against like-skilled players. The system isn’t even fully implemented yet.
Patience.
This is all really enlightening. Thanks for all the replies Justin and all the hard work!
That is good to know. I was playing my Mesmer a few hours ago(which I don’t play competitively very often)and was queued against at least 3 of “The Abjured”. We were all solo queued. They weren’t. The struggz was real.
Oh, that’s right! In the span of a single year ArenaNet released 2 standalone games for the GW franchise. Dang. Makes me really wish that type of release was in play for GW2. I really hope for some sort of 10 year anniversary event in GW2. It would be great. heck, better yet would be a Cantha expansion on the same date for GW2!
This is where gamers could learn a thing or two from the billion dollar industry that is professional sports. You build your team with one goal in mind: Win. That’s it. No one calls Phil Jackson’s triangle approach, “Cheese”. No one called the West Coast offense, “Cheese”. Why? Because it works. If it works and if it’s within the rules and you win, then you did what you had to do to win and you are right for doing what you had to do to win. People that are calling out any team that wins for using “cheese” have no clue what they are talking about. Period.
that about sums it up. you do what you think is best to win because winning is all that matters.
I am super interested in leaderboards per profession. Top Ele, Top Ranger etc. Also a Top all-around player leaderboard for multi-classers.
I really like the system as it is now. Not nearly as many 4v5’s as before and that to me is exactly what we needed to get fixed first. Now that they have that out of the way they can address other issues. I really think bringing the Mystic Forge back, adding crafting stations among other amenities being added to The Mists map should be seriously considered. If we have to be there, then we should have a bunch of things to keep us occupied while we wait.
Good job NA! you threw off the shackles of European super pro esports oppression so that all can be free to esports!
The matchmaking right now is all over the place. I can go from a 500-480 to a 500-0 Courtyard to a 500-100 Forest to a 500-450 Temple. Is it going to change at all? Still too soon for the new system to be working all the way?
I like Ready Up bypassing waiting for timer though. Legit.
Would be nice to get stat window to not go back to reward track every time you close it and vice versa.
I like the update mostly.
I think the thing I would be more interested in is if traits were changed up more often so that the way we play changes to keep things fresh. It’s obvious to me we aren’t getting new classes anytime soon so why not vary the play of each class by changing how the traits work from time to time.
Thanks for giving us a place to vent with little to no assurances that changes will be made to remedy these double lotteries that have been popping up lately masquerading as “rewards”.
The winter break is the best time to work on stuff like luminescent gear, too.
