Is AoE actually a problem? - Discussion Thread

This game really needs what happened in GW1 really late in its life cycle: Skill splits for different formats. I think it’s just too hard to balance skills for different formats that involve so many different types of battles and tactics.

In this forums we also need to start talking about what Jonathan is saying as well. There are some weapon sets where AoE is an issue for some professions. They will address those specifically. That is fine. What they need to work on is how they communicate that. I see what ArenaNet is talking about. They just didn’t communicate it well.

No longer able to ress in combat?

It also means if one person dies they get to waste their time on the floor while their group/guild/friends either take that much longer to win or take that much longer to wipe. Just replacing waypoint zerging with this isnt a solution.

You can go Down 4 times before instantly being Defeated. Each time you go Down you incur 1min of DP, which reduced Downed health by 25%. After a minute, the DP disappears. So it’s not like you are instantly dead.

I’d argue getting rid of that will encourage MORE teamwork to try and keep each other alive / in the game.

^this. also, it should promote party members glancing at health bars they way you would glance in your rear view mirror frequently while driving. this is a fine addition.

How many crowns for precurser

Just to so everyone understands, he said reward “System(S)”, with an S. Plural.

That means it doesn’t have to refer to this system, singular, that we’ve been told about.

Scavenger hunt + Achievement tokens = 2 kinds of reward systemS. Again, plural. One we know about but will not include precursors and the other we don’t know about but will include precursors. Whatever happens in between is still up in the air.

So no, there hasn’t been a contradiction by the devs.

You’re welcome, Colin. Lol

They aren’t currently working on a precursor scavenger hunt

Linsey is working on it, but they don’t have anything set at all. It’s all still very drawing board from what I gather. Colin cleared up some confusion last week in a thread about that. I for one am glad they are taking their time and doing it right this time. I don’t want something rushed. It was done poorly and put in the game. This time they will take care not to push the feature to game too soon. They did however make a killing on gems from people buying pre-cusrors on the BLTC in the first few weeks though so you can’t fault them for their business acumen.

After reading everything Colin said, I feel pretty good about how it will all turn out. Linsey does a good job and will come up with something awesome. Colin has to be murky about it, because the system isnt in place yet. They are still designing it. Patience.

Lack of grinding kills this game for me

Iason Evan.3806

I level a lot of alts in MMOs, and generally, after work, I enjoy just mindlessly killing enemies.

The respawn rate for enemies in GW2 is a lot higher than in most other games. I would think that lends itself well to doing what it is you want to do. Heck, I do that sometimes too. Harathi Hinterlands in the North East is where you want to be. You can kill Centaurs there all the time and even just jump in events if you want. If you don’t want to, you can also just kill Centaurs and they respawn and a ridiculous rate.

In my view, the Trinity Needs to Come Back

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Iason Evan.3806

Iason Evan.3806

I actually want the fights to get more like Zelda. Watching for boss tells and telegraphs of skills etc.

It’s pretty easy: Most MMO’s give you the trinity. There are games almost as pretty as GW2 out there that give you the trinity. GW2 is doing something slightly off kilter that is fun. If you don’t want the GW2 flavor, that is fine. There are other games to play that offer you the tried(tired) and true(?) trinity formula. Most of us don’t want the trinity.

I’m gonna use one of the fractals as an example: The Colossus. This fractal is mostly about positioning. The design is as close to flawless as I have seen in a dungeon though. Aesthetically it is gorgeous. It hits all the right notes from a lore perspective and it’s about reading the tells of the boss. When he charges his hammer, you proc a block or you dodge. It has a great finish with how our buddy walks away at the end.

If you have dropped any amount of time into this game and are not enjoying it, then maybe it’s just time for a break. Wanting an entirely different mechanical system added to the way this game is played at this point is not looking to the future. ArenaNet is a very iterative company and their dungeon design is only going to get more creative from this point forward. Have some forward thinking and look at where their design is going as opposed to looking to the past. I think the way the fractals are designed(from a mechanics standpoint) shows that they understand how to please all fronts. Example: Gated content that doesn’t have a gate for people that just want to do group content, but adding a gate for people that want gear progression that only gates the content in the fractal. It’s brilliant design.

Legendaries and avalibility of Pre cursors

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Iason Evan.3806

Iason Evan.3806

The cool part for me is that the time to coolness ratio doesn’t seem cost effective. I like the Tier 3 Asuran cultural weapons for all my characters. Great animations, Big skins, and they are pretty unique. I like them more than the Mystic weapons and the Dark Asuran stuff. Most of the Legendaries are pretty average. I like one of the great swords and the hammer, but there are other weapons that I think are just as cool. The Halloween great sword is cool and so is the Corrupted Greatsword.

If you get it just because it is Legendary and a recognizable skin, you are doing it for the wrong reasons. Get a skin you totally like and then realize that the amount of time it takes to get this weapon skin is time that could be spent doing real life stuff and making real money to get real things that will enrich your life. Heck, you could write a novel in the time it takes to put into getting one of those now.

I haven’t spent a dime of real money on gems and yet I have bought a ton of stuff off the gem store. If anything, gold is the advantage. Then again, there is nothing in the store I feel like I need to sped real money on yet. That will have to wait. There are no P2W items in the gem shop yet. Flat out. We could say those armor boosters and speed boosters are, but I get those for free doing things too. I think Anet has struck the proper balance.

the use of Mystical Cogs

in Wintersday

Iason Evan.3806

Reading comprehension check: Original poster said he/she already used up all of his/her frames, so can’t make another mini.

Oops thanks for pointing that out.

It would be nice to know what the OP used them all for, 250 cogs left means only one Mini made if all 5 instances/dungeons have been completed.

Amaris, what did you do with all of the Frames?

Again. The OP said the frames were used to make the tonics. If you make an endless tonic, it consumes the frame.

where exactly did OP say he used them for tonics?…

There are only two uses for frames.

He wouldn’t have leftover cogs if hadn’t been using his frames to craft tonics.

He/She wouldn’t have leftover cogs if he had been making minis you mean. If the OP is out of frames, he/she had to be crafting tonics, which goes against what the OP is saying about running out of cogs and not knowing about another use for the cogs besides minis. Either troll post or typos on the OP’s part.

As a solo gamer: Holidays are a pain.

in Wintersday

Posted by: Iason Evan.3806

Iason Evan.3806

For solo players and holidays: Jumping puzzle is solo. WvW requires no talking to jump in with a Commander, Snowball Arena is random, just jump in and play. Bell game is solo. I could keep going. Heck, you can go farm presents solo. You know the big ones that spawn. The only thing that requires a party is the dungeon which takes 5 minutes top end to find a group for. I think calling it a pain for solo players is not true. There are TONS of things to do solo that I just listed.

Well, that would be great, except for the fact that the only way to get the holiday minis (unless you want to pony up real cash for gems) is to run that dungeon.

“But that’s no different than dungeon armor now” you might say. Except it is. Normal dungeons are permanent content. If I decide I want the armor, I can get to it in my own time, waiting to do them with my choice of people. The holiday dungeons are limited time access. People who want those minis can’t wait very long. If they miss out, they have to wait a whole year and hope the same content is offered.

All ‘tangible’ rewards for any limited access content should be obtainable via both solo and group play.

It’s a 15 minute dungeon. 20 tops. With a PUG. Run it at the end of the day when everyone and their brother has done it a ton of times. Me and some guildies 3 manned the one in the grove yesterday after doing it a bunch of times and realized we didnt have to get a group. With your logic we can say everything is a pain. You want an item you can only get there. Guess what? Just decide what is more important to you: the mini or not doing the dungeon. It’s simple. Then go enjoy all the content after 15 MINUTES of your day is taken up for the ONE SINGLE RUN you need to get the stuff you need.

EDIT: Also, you had to know when you bought this MMO that you would have to do SOME multiplayer, right? The rest of the holiday event is 100% soloable.

i have beat the “god” events more times with small groups than the large zerg fests that don’t rez, tap every mob for loot and don’t watch npc’s. IMO, it’s better without the chaos. Also, Lyss stuff is more fun just to farm the side events. Dwayna is fairly easy and a cool looking boss, Grenth isn’t bad and great drops, and I have no need for Balthazar anymore and huge groups almost never beat that one. Why I haven't touched the gem shop yet

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Iason Evan.3806

Iason Evan.3806

I’ve spent over $4,000.00 on the gem store and gladly I’m no better off than my guildies who’ve spent 0 dollars in the gem store.

I look at the optimal farm spots and do a conversion of the gold-per-hour to dollars-per-hour. I hate farming and see it like work, I don’t wanna work for 6 dollars an hour, so I buy gems and play the way I want. (running fractals with friends, trolling enemies in WVW, Etc.)

The only real difference between me and most players is that I have a ton of cultural t3 armor skins, multiple toons with expensive dyes, a ton of character slots, a bunch of the cosmetic town clothes, Etc. I’m no better off than anyone else, and for that I think the Gem store works perfectly.

I think your analogy of it being work in game is off a bit. You take the money you earn at work and spend it in game. Your time at work=work in game as you spend a bit of what you make at work on the game. I see your point though. I don’t see any of what is in the cash shop as giving players an advantage. Leveling faster is a moot point as you can craft level in this game. Someone can buy XP boosters and level with them and they still won’t level as fast as I will with crafting. If I look at any item as being advantageous it is the mystic forge stone.

What's happening to the price of gems?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Iason Evan.3806

Iason Evan.3806

What is it, $10 for 800 gems? That gets you a character slot, no? Last time I checked, that is what they charge for a character slot in GW1 as well. Seems really reasonable. Oh! You want to buy it with gold and you want it to be cheap.

I know it’s all opinion and all are entitled to their opinions. I just think it’s laughable that you can get 800 gems for the price of a movie ticket and have a new character(I haven’t even maxed all 5 of the slots I have been given) and play it for hours on end.

I have very specific tastes when it comes to paying real money for cash shop items. Those things are not in the cash shop yet. So far, they have been giving the stuff I like away for free. You know, new dungeons, new zones, new skins, etc.

I would say nice “medium term” skins would be the Tier 3 Cultural skins. 63k karma. Not too cheap, not too expensive and some nice skins in there. I am still playing this game a ton. ArenaNet has put a ton of content in and I love it. I don’t think I would be on these forums if I didn’t. If I was playing a different game, I would be on those forums not these.

Also: ArenaNet didn’t break their promises. Those of us that don’t want gear progression can still play the Fractals. I don’t care to get to “X” level of the Fractals. Why? Because they are raising the level cap just like they ALWAYS said they were going to and the gear that people are getting in there will be obsolete when that happens. Why grind for gear in a game that doesn’t require it? It’s in there for people that want the illusion necessary gear progression, and the content is there for people who don’t care. Who doesn’t care about gear progression? Me.

Thoughts on Ascended Gear? [Merged threads]

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Iason Evan.3806

Iason Evan.3806

I am chuckling to myself about this thread a tad. First reason, you don’t even need Exotic gear to do 99% of the content in this game. Secondly, read EXACTLY what that post said. It says NOTHING about armor rating going up. If anything I would think it will be a new rune or something that will be minor. True Power creep is NEEDING a certain base stat to even do something in a game. Sure, it will be way harder to wear blue grade gear at level 80 and do a dungeon or two in this game, but it can be done. That can’t be said for other games.

For the love of Mellagan, chill out with the Chicken Little posts and give ArenaNet some credit. We just came off of an AMAZING Halloween Event and two weeks later we are getting more awesome content for FREE and a new permanent zone, dungeon, and sPvP map. If anything I would like to give a HUGE THANK YOU to ArenaNet for this amazing game.

How come you are too chicken to fight me in SPvP?”

I would rather have Tengu, Mursaat, Forgotten, Centaur, or Kodan as playable. I would rather these guys be an enemy. I have a feeling that “The Lost Shores” will have a few of these in the content, and I will see them and they will speak cryptically, and I will want to introduce them to my hammer.

Iason Evan.3806

I won’t be going for any of these skins for any other purpose than to amass huge amounts of in game gold. The skins bore me and/or amuse me to the point of thinking ArenaNet is trolling us with their design sans the great swords.

Off topic(kinda):

I think the really interesting thing about this thread is that EVERYONE is talking about two skins here. The Great Swords. The other legendaries are garbage and people are talking about them as a means of making money, not actually acquiring said skins and then playing the game.

I really wish that there had been some consistency in the design of these items as far as skins go. Look at the difference in prices. Why would anyone go for making any other skin rather than the great swords and then selling the pre-cursor to fund the crafting of the bows or dagger or shield etc.? This whole thing is a mess and it’s hard not to think that loophoiles were left in place for a bit so insiders could get their mitts on a pre-cursor and then anet could change the way the game was played.

IDK why devs feel like they need to say when something is coming. If anything I would do it like they did with beta. They said a time, and then more often than not you could log in prior to the time that was listed. People give more kudos when you are early with something. It still can technically be an early release if you had said the 23rd PST, and released it tonight knowing full well you were releasing it tonight. That way you get excited people posting on the forums as opposed to impatient people.

To me, the impatience is justified. With GW1, you guys released patches on Thursdays in the afternoon, and weekend updates happened at Noon PST. When you say, on the 22nd, I feel like after playing GW1 for 7 years, it was safe to say Noon was when it was coming out. Us hardcore players of your game, plan our days around your game. Releasing a patch with 6 hours or less in said day destroys some of the excitement I have for it. Of course that will be gone once I am playing it! Come on already! We are excited to play!

Why dont i want to play this game?

I was so hyped about this game. A year ago i was checking guildwars2.com every day, waiting for more info. But now that its here… I dont want to play it. Maybe its because i already knew about everything in it before i even played it, or whatever, but i havent even logged 200 hours on this game.

Pve got too tedious and i stopped at level 30 because it wasnt fun for me, at all. PvP is better but not by much… I can only play 2 or 3 games before i have to stop playing and play other game.

So why dont i like this game? Is it just not for me or what?

Wait, one sec. You played a game for over 200 hours and you don’t like it? I can count on one hand the number of games I have spent that amount of time in. Maybe it isn’t that you don’t like it, it’s that you burnt out on it. Games I don’t like I spend 1 or 2 hours in giving it the benefit of the doubt and then I am just forced to turn them off they are so bad. I think that is more akin to what you mean or I hope it is what you mean, because 200 hours in a game you don’t like isn’t good.

I have noticed quite a bit of escort missions and Defend missions where you are in close proximity to an NPC and trying to pick something up, the “F” key being used for both actions is really annoying. If we could get those to be two different keys, whether it is key mapping ability or just flat out changing one of the keys would be great.

Why the need to make everyone PvP?

Having to get 100% map completion including the WvW map is odd based off of GW1. In Gw1, PvP and PvE maps were separate. There wasn’t a 100% PvP map completion, and the PvE “Legendary Cartographer” Title did NOT include PvP maps. That is for people saying that the WvW map should be included, when ANet has set a precedent with this game and map completion.

Bots don’t thrive in a Dynamic Event environment. They thrive in areas with high spawn rates where the bot doesn’t have to move around to the mobs, they stay where the mobs spawn. My line of thinking would be creating areas like this to attract bots and then watch those areas. Create traps for the bots and then let Dhuum do his work accordingly.

Speaking of Dhuum, we need a visual message that something is being done about this problem.

Next gw2 Expansion Class?

A hand to hand combatant called the pugilist. Instead of weapon swapping he could have stances he could swap to change his fighting style. Maybe it could have some magic with it as well to enhance it or add weapons that followed different trait lines. IDK I am just throwing out some ideas. The Teras Kasi Artist in Star Wars Galaxies had this and it was a crazy fun class because you would walk up to Rancors and punch them. That is about as tuff with two f’s as you can get.

if they would get rid of the camera as an object clipping with things it would clear a lot of this up.

Make Mist Form invulnerable to fall damage (and condition damage).

agreed. it’s really annoying in Caudecus Manor when you go over the spikes in a certain room in Mist Form and take damage as well. As a side note, a lot of the descriptions of things need to be updated so that the player is informed of the how the game is going to react to players. My skills say they do one thing and then do other things entirely. It would be nice for a lot of those things to be uniform so I know when and when not to use certain skills etc.

Camera Smoothing

The most worrisome problem for me is the camera clipping. We need a no clipping option camera. It would help with the jumping puzzles tremendously. If a platformer performed like this it would get low review scores. You guys have platformer style things in your game. It should be addressed as well.

Dhuum needs to come back. Also, ANet needs to send employees out looking for the places where bots farm. If the average player can see groups of bots in places, then ANet should have a better understanding of where the best places are to farm gold. Heck, I would create spots in game that would seem more attractive to bots so they can herd them into one spot and send their employees out to those spots.

Tank or glass still only 1 viable elementalist build?

in PvP

Iason Evan.3806

I find Scepter/Dagger the best. Just fits my play style. @OP, I don’t however plan or build around not dying. I plan my builds to mitigate the number of times it happens. Death occurs. I just try and work it out so others are dying to me rather than the opposite. It usually works out that way and I don’t roll anything in Arcana. Not that I don’t find it useful, I find it doesn’t suit my play style. The beauty of this game to me is the flexibility it offers my imagination. Try shelving your Elementalist for a few weeks and coming back to it fresh without any preconceived notions and just play by feel. ROll something that works well and traits that compliment your skills and play by action/reaction to other players and avoid situations that you can’t handle. We all have times in pvp where we get ourselves in over our heads. I try and take a break when I am pushing it as far as what I can take on. Over aggressive play and over aggressive traiting are both issues, but adjusting attack style is a big part of it. IDK that I agree that there is one way to skin a cat like you suggest.

@OP: Fortunately for you EVERY other MMO on the market has a trinity system. Enjoy the myriad other games out there for you with that system. You have a TON to choose from.
