Hey All,
Would you keep rank acquisition the same as it is now?
If not, what would you do to improve rank acquisition?
Thanks again!
John
Thanks so much for the clarification.
1.) I would make the progression have more tiers (in between the ones that are already in place) as far as finishers/ranks go with less of a steep curve. That way you feel like you are progressing. I would add tiers too so that people that want super long term goals have them. I feel like this way it keeps people engaged be they sPvP vets or people who dabble.
The rest of my ideas have already been expressed. Thanks for all you guys do!
Removing ranks from the game is a terrible idea. I know myself included with many friends are considering leaving the game if this change is implemented. We have been playing pvp since launch and are proud of all our ranks, and now we will no longer be able to work on it, and all we have to show is a finisher? Jokes. On top of that you’re making the gear we earned through high ranks available to everyone from pve who did nothing in pvp. Great job on destroying the gw2 pvp community or what was left of it
^THIS
what anet doing is alienating one community in exchange of another…Guess what…In the end this game gonna lose both…
I have talked about this before too. We have been putting hundreds and some people thousands of hours into trying to get the dragon finisher. We knew it would take years. We have already put forth a year and a half’s worth of effort and now we have no way of getting to it ever? For a lot of us it’s the rank that matters. For others we were working on the rank emote.
I will repeat what I said earlier for emphasis: I am at my Tiger Emote. I am working toward at least my Phoenix. Many people are MUCH further along than me but I have invested hundreds of hours into PvP just to try and get that Phoenix emote.
This is akin to you guys saying you are going to remove Legendaries except for the people that already have them. That’s what this is to the PvP community. It’s like some guy doing map completion, getting all his gifts and precursor and being some T6 mats short and then you take away the ability to make Legendaries. The only part that is different is that the time investment for sPvP emotes and ranks is on a MUCH larger scale. Please reconsider locking the rank emotes. In my opinion it is a terrible waste of so many people’s efforts and time.
From the blog:
Of course, rewards is just one aspect of the projects we’re working on over on the PvP team. We’ll go into detail with other projects like new game types as we get closer to having those further along in production.
The projects listed in the blog are not exhaustive – we’re working on other things simultaneously. As John mentioned, we’re still working on game modes and new maps. As Justin has mentioned in another post, we’re also looking at ways to drastically improve the quality of matchmaking. This includes harsher penalties for afk players and leavers.
You have to understand that it’s different from our perspective; you’re always “working” on upcoming features and content, yet it hardly turns out as advertised or gets released in a timely fashion.
I have to echo similar sentiments on this topic. We were told Ascended Armor and Precursor fixes were coming this year too. It’s December 3rd and we still don’t have official confirmation on those things actually making it into the game this year.
I don’t care if they make it or not. I care that if you guys know something is NOT going to make it in that you tell us that it isn’t in a timely fashion. I am tired of hearing about this and that is going to be in the game and then when the update hits and certain features that were discussed as going to be “in” then don’t make it.
(edited by Iason Evan.3806)
I know that we are supposed to be getting the Ascended Armor update and Precursor update this year. I also know Colin said the precursor update was in danger of being pushed back. With all that said, we don’t have confirmation either way yet and the update information page for next week’s content still isn’t up for today.
Are those things happening this year? Do we need to wait til the end of the year to hear that those things aren’t coming?
I don’t want to sound agitated, but with communication being made a priority around here, the lack of info on specific things that were supposed to come out this year and still aren’t is more than a little frustrating. I am not even talking about being annoyed that they aren’t coming out(if that is the case) but that we don’t know one way or the other. What’s the deal?
that’s really cool.
It’s really odd. The only preview I can find is on dulfy.net and that is only for the new masks etc. Weird they aren’t giving us a taste of the glory so we can see what it tastes like!
No. I can spend gold to convert to gems. The only other game I can think of that lets you use in game currency to actually pay for a sub is in EvE.
Adding the crafted fractal infusions should not have happened until Ascended Armor was in the game. That way people can just buy +5s from the Fractal vendor and it makes the leaderboards worth something. I don’t like things getting half implemented in games. People willing to spend exorbitant amounts of gold being able to do something is a silly gate on content.
1.) I would like to see skins that drop exclusively in PvP, but have the ability to be converted for use in PvE.
2.) I would love for glory to be able to be converted to gold after the changes go live. Let us spend what we have of our glory on items that will cost gold after the update. I don’t find it fair that gold-rich Tom (but is Glory poor) would have a leg up on any players that are Glory Rich. sPvPers should have an advantage for obtaining items before PvE’ers jump on the meta train.
3.) If you guys decide something is not going to happen, please let us know before it goes live. I can’t stand being excited about something for months only to find out when it gets pushed to live that it wasn’t implemented (i.e. Dredge Fractal changes that never happened).
4.) AFK’ers need to be dealt with. The ready button should have to be pushed and if someone AFK’s AFTER pushing the ready button there should be stiff penalties. People should get 1 or 2 freebies per daily reset and after that they can’t play for the rest of the day or something. It’s getting old.
5.) Let us keep earning our rank banners. I am level 40 atm, I have been working my tail off toward high end ranks. Don’t stop our progress please. It’s just time wasted. It would be akin to you guys saying Legendaries are being taken out of the game and only the people that have them now get to keep them. It’s unfair to those of us that have been working on our ranks and aren’t there yet. It’s not for lack of trying or a time investment. I have spent HUNDREDS of hours on sPvP.
6.) Give us access to all the emotes we have earned. For example /rank1 would do a bunny, /rank4 would do a wolf.
(edited by Iason Evan.3806)
It’s way harder to earn a lot of those sets in pvp. It takes more time. I understand where you are coming from, but specific armor sets take way more time to even be able to earn and then you have to have good RNG to even get them.
but… can’t you craft them?
Yeah, but it’s RNG. You don’t get the skin you want all the time. You also have to be a certain rank before you start gettting a lot of skins. It’s akin to people in PvE whining that PvPers have access to cultural skins. PvPers really don’t. It can take years to even get to the point where we can earn them.
- pve gear in pvp
I think this is quite cool. The other way around on the other hand…
I’d suggest to limit the currently earned sPvP gear (including dungeon sets) to sPvP only. Otherwise people who got through the hardest dungeons would lose their prestige-show offs in PvE/WvW.

Really excited about this. Looks fantastic. I would just like to mention one thing: If changes do in fact happen and things in this post change or are not going to happen, can you all let us know about it? It stinks when you get excited for something and it changes and we see it for the first time in game and it isn’t like what was said might happen. It would be great if iterations happen and you guys can tell us, "Hey, we decided that feature “X” no longer fits with our vision of what we want to do so we are toying with offering option “Y” instead. Keep in mind that might change too".
It makes it more bearable. Thanks. I also think it cuts down on forum rage too. If people know ahead of time it isn’t such a shock.
(edited by Iason Evan.3806)
Part 1 is good. No respawns for bomb room or sonic gun room and tone down the number of enemies. Speed up bomb timers and also adjust which dredge will actually pick up the bombs. 20 enemies with Greg Popovich are good enough. He’s a fun fight. More enemies don’t equal good mechanics. Last boss fight is a blast so don’t change it, but lower health of Elementalist. Get rid of enemies in walkway to last boss from Popovich(I know it’s Rabsovich, but I like calling him by the name of the coach for the Spurs).

IE, another ANET lie. Instead of shortening the fractal they made it longer. Currently Underground fractal is way out of balance.
I don’t agree with it being a lie, I just remember them saying they thought it was too long and that they were going to do something about it. I just want clear communication when things that are said don’t come to pass so it isn’t a shock when it doesn’t happen.
Hey all. I specifically remember a dev saying that the dredge fractal was targeted to bring it more in-line time-wise with the other Fractals. Does anyone have a link to that quote? I remember they were saying they were going to make fixes to the Fractals and the Dredge one was specifically mentioned as going to be fixed. I know that the other stuff in that fractal has been talked about a ton, but what happened that they decided not to fix the time sink of it, but also made it a little longer by removing corpses from the floor plates?
If any dev would like to comment I would greatly appreciate it because this is an example of another communication problem. You guys say you are going to do one thing and then do another. This wasn’t something that wasn’t seen as an issue either. You guys specifically targeted the Dredge Fractal as being too long and then ignored it.
I feel like we should have had a warning about this prior to the update going live. I think for communication to get better it starts with stuff like this on your end. A simple, “Hey guys, we looked at the Dredge Fractal and decided we like where it’s at and moreover, we decided that we are going to make corpses leave the floor plates in the first puzzle to give it a little more challenge.”
It’s not fun going into a Fractal that you think is going to be shorter and then finding out not only did you guys not fix it, but you didn’t mention that you weren’t going to fix it. This saves people like me from frustration and then venting about it on the forums.
Anyways, if anyone has that link I would appreciate it.
I don’t agree that they are less casual. My group in my guild did a 28 last night and it was far easier than 28’s used to be. They have fixed several issues (several glaring ones still exist and some new ones) but I do find them easier, the loot is better, and the new Fractals are a blast.
My therapist says that I have blocked someone called Scarlet from my memory. She says I should be happy not having to deal with that “abomination” (her words not mine) in my life.
I kind of equate Scarlet to Colonel Miles Quaritch, the military dude in Avatar. A shallow, one sided character. It doesn’t matter to us how deep the ArenaNet writers know Scarlet to be because they know all of the lore. We can only go off of how she is presented. The story could be totally great with an amazing twist, but at this point, all I see is Scarlet saying really dumb, trope-y stuff even though she is supposedly brilliant.
To the OP: Nice write up. One problem: It’s gotten to the point that people can’t see or hear her anymore. They tune her out. It’s like when a football coach can’t get his guys fired up for game day anymore. The only recourse I see at this point is for Scarlet to not be around anymore.
People are going to miss out on great story, and ArenaNet is losing out on conveying that story to us because people are having this Pavlovian response to Scarlet and associating her with the ENTIRETY of the new Fractal update. It’s totally unfair to ArenaNet. At some point she needs to go or they need to cut the fat out of these updates and give us something substantial that shows us why we should care about her.
I’d like human medium T3 on my norn ranger and norn heavy t3 on my human guardian. Don’t really care for the rest of culturals but I am sure they will be available quite soon. Oh and I want refunds for my 5 cultural T3s and stuff attached to them like transmutation stones ect., which is about 800-ish gold altogether. I’d rather pay for them with my credit card than slave away farming gold in a game I should be enjoying.
And I’d like the legendaries too, willing to pay for them ofcourse.
I am on board with wanting a refund for my Emperor Title. Transmutation costs and rune costs too. I am pretty ticked off about this. If you go back throughout my post history, my comments have always been pretty level headed and fair. I am not rude to devs or posters. This update has me as upset as I can be about a game. It’s a game so whatever, but I worked my tail off for my Emperor Title.
Between this and resetting people’s progress in Fractals, it’s pretty disconcerting. A lot of the bugs that we were telling you guys about haven’t been fixed in the Fractals either.
I went to kill her for you guys. Scarlet appeared and killed me. There was no waypoint for me to rez at afterwards. She then spawned a weird little Asura next to my lifeless body that just kept yelling “CITIZENS!” at me over and over.
I hate her.
It’s all Scarlet’s fault and I don’t hate her in a good way like I hate Darth Vader or Hannibal Lecter. I loathe that she exists because she is poorly designed as a character.
I would like to ask for an Abaddon Dungeon now. not a Fractal. It needs 3-4 paths. It needs a set of armor and a really in depth Story mode that doesn’t contain vegetable girl.
If I knew Scarlet was going to show up, I would have voted for the Abaddon fractal despite finding it uninteresting and it being completely unrelated to GW2’s story.
Problem with that is they said the story was already written. She would have been behind that too lol. You can’t stop the Scarlet invasion, nor can you hope to contain it.
Went up to the top, beat the boss and could not get off the platform or get the chest. If we jumped we died and our corpses were immediately transported to the top platform with the last boss. There was no way to get the chest. We got two achievements. We all exited the game, logged back into LA and the Fractal entrance only gave us “Story Mode” as an option.
Why get upset about getting Ascended crafting mats?
I think a lot of this discussion is coming from two different viewpoints. 1.) The view point of GW1 players. There was zero vertical progression. You leveled to 20 bought some armor and weapons and it was cheap. Gw2 compared with that game is grindy.
2.) Players coming from games with raid locks where level curves are steep etc. find this game a breeze.
The problem: When they were saying they wanted it to be cosmetic only, it was mostly read by the GW1 vets. That was the largest player base reading all of the early hype. It feels as if it was aimed at that. The problem is that the devs over sold what it was going to be.
Keep in mind they were also saying there may not be a level cap and that we would get actual expansions. Things have changed with the devs and the consumer’s opinion. It makes sense that some people are disgruntled and others are not. Sometimes though, if you bought something for a reason based off of what a developer said and the game now doesn’t match that (and it doesn’t match the early things said by the devs by their own admission of iteration) then sometimes it’s best to move on.
I for one am waiting to hear what the permanent content was that Colin was talking about earlier in the year. I will give the benefit of the doubt til then.
Not sure which group you was putting me in, but I am a GW1 vet.
So you would be in both groups like me. I was really just trying to differentiate the points of view. People have a hard time communicating what they mean through typing sometimes. People are having two different arguments in here. Both groups are right to a certain extent. GW1 people were sold a game based on knowledge of GW1. In that game there is no vertical progression. I don’t need to tell you that. You played it. If you only played GW1 though you would have no other point of reference and this game would feel grindy. Make sense?
So on the premise of this game being grindy to the people who only played GW1, their opinion is correct from where they stand. In GW1 you could level a character to cap, get a run to every outpost (sans Factions of course) and have a set of armor with max level stats for very cheap. Weapons were cheap as well. You could buy skill tomes and have a character with all the map locations, all the primary skills, and many elites (If you had money, all the elites) in a very short amount of time. If you compare that with GW2, GW2 is grindy. That is where those people are coming from and they have every right to feel that way about it. It’s their only point of reference and it was what the devs were selling them in those videos from their point of view.
(edited by Iason Evan.3806)
This was said before they decided to do Living Story updates. I honestly think because they may never release a boxed expansion, there won’t be a level cap increase and that is why they added the Ascended stuff. The Ascended stuff is the progression.
Also, to the OP, a game like GW2 wouldn’t raise the cap by 10 levels. That’s absurd. They would raise it by 40-50 levels. I could get 10 levels on all my characters by crafting alone.
Starting at 31. 19 instabilities will mean the last one falls on 49.
Well that makes no sense. What do we do at 50??
Tribulation Mode. You have all 19 instabilities at the same time.
i’m in!

Why would anyone ever look at a website with the leaderboards on it when they are 100%, unequivocally, set in stone, undeniably pointless?
To OP: That doesn’t make any sense. Tons of people just starting out will be queuing for low level ones or level 10’s for that chance at a Fractal skin.
I think if rewards were better at the ending big event if you participated in the pre-events more people would do them.
This right here is the answer for the population. I do a lot of the pre-events, but I am in the minority. I have to post in map chat, “CRusader Angaria bag farm is up at [Anchorage Waypoint]” to get people to come do the mid-pre event for the gates of arah. It’s neigh impossible for me to get people to escort Warmaster Chan. Not to mention that he bugs out all the time.
A lot of the problem at least on SoR is that the Temple Events are SUPER buggy too. We had two weeks recently (many times in the past as well) where we couldn’t do Melandru, Dwayna, or Gates of Arah due to them getting stuck at certain parts of their progression. This is why I want a two week update dedicated to just squashing bugs.
My Mini Liadri is bugged. Every time I parade her around LA she poops ectos for me. It’s pretty cool.
This update would be amazing and was something all of us Fractal players were looking forward to with the omission of 2 things: Leaderboards and reset.
I for one am super excited for the new fractals. I am leery of the instabilities. I am hopeful the issues that the community has been rightfully complaining about and reporting for almost a year (Harpy Invuln. Terrible AoE circles from harpies on platforms etc.) will get fixed. I am hopeful the Dredge Fractal will be brought in line with the others.
I just don’t understand how the devs thought we would all be cool with a reset. “I am gonna go reset my D&D group’s progress. I am sure they will all appreciate that.”
I want to know what the thinking behind it was. It’s a head scratcher.
I have another sentiment about Asc. Gear being alt friendly: It is and it isn’t. Laurels are account bound. That is friendly. Rings you get in Fractals are account bound. That is alt. friendly. Asc. Crafting is alt friendly, because the gear is account bound. I find getting trinkets and ascended back pieces to be an annoyance.
Fractal level is now account bound (It was before too really, you just went back to your main fractal character at the start of the Jade Maw Fractal) so that is (and was) friendly. It’s also lame that it wasn’t like how it’s going to be from day 1 but that is an issue for another topic.
The bummer is that they first said ascended stuff was for fractals. Then they went back on that and said that ascended was always supposed to be in the game but didn’t make the launch. If it had been in from day 1, and ended up being the absolute ceiling for gear, no one would have cared. It’s just that two different things were said about it, and it got released over time. Apparently carrots in this game need to be more treadmill like in this game than they were in GW1.
It’s also really too bad that Ascended weapons and armor are not obtainable by any means outside of crafting. Why should anyone do dungeons anymore? Furthermore, why aren’t dungeon armors being turned into skins now that Ascended armor and weapons will be the top tier? Why wasn’t there an ascended Fractal Armor set announced? Why are the Fractal Weapons going to be skins and not Ascended weapons? I honestly don’t understand why this stuff was handled this way and we can’t get them for doing content AND crafting.
I think something the devs need to keep in mind is that when you get too close to something (devs and GW2 and to a lesser extent some of the players) it’s hard to look at it in an objective manner. It helps to step back from it completely.
I think the idea of devs having a way to flag ideas from the player base that they have taken note of is a good idea. I know you guys say you read this stuff, but do you? You guys have said a lot of things that haven’t happened or aren’t going to happen this year that were supposed to. I give it leeway because you guys are a busy lot, but I think you get my point.
ArenaNet really needs to do a better job explaining the changes. Let’s say you have a back piece with +5 AR. Once the update hits that +5 becomes inherent. You can then add AR afterwards to have even more. You aren’t losing one iota of AR off of your gear.
The Fractal Staff is the best staff.
Another con I thought of: Rewards that are Exotic out of chests are account bound. This needs to change.
1) A tangible indication that this process isn’t some form of placebo or sleight of hand.
This was my thought as well. I know you all at ArenaNet love iterative design. I would hate for something the community wants get designed and then get iterated on so much it isn’t really what the player base wants in the end. Let us know what is going on with it as it’s happening. I want to know this stuff is being implemented.
I kind of felt like this happened with the pre-cursor stuff. It was said in the state of the game that we were getting it this year. It was a HUGE one on the community’s list of what they wanted. Now it may get pushed back. I feel like other things should have gone on the back burner in favor of the pre-cursor stuff getting implemented. I don’t feel like that happened.
We as a community need to be respectful with our words. The devs should be respectful in that things they say are coming out in a broad time frame (Pre-cursor changes coming out this year was said months ago) should come out in that time frame. I feel like that is how the community gets disrespected. Just as we should respect you guys with our words, you guys should respect us with your actions in your designs and the time frames that are put on them by you. You said they were coming out this year, not us.
Only difference is if you already have it on your armor it isn’t going anywhere. Most people who care about Fractals have multiple toons that are already decked out in AR. Those that have only been playing with a “Rewards Now” mentality won’t care either. They will just run Fractals ad nauseam now and when the patch hits.
We fixed a number of bugs and made lots of balance changes to existing fractals. Also the difficulty scaling has been tweaked overall to create a slightly less difficult curve up to 50.
The weapons are skins now.
Ascended armor is not in the game right now, but if it was, it would drop in the Fractals.
So that means no Ascended armors for fracs update?
They haven’t announced ascended armor crafting yet, so he could not say more than this. I read this as a hint that it is coming with the next patch, not the other way around. Makes complete sense to me anyway, since the core of the ascended tier started with FotM. How can you start a leaderboard and change the rules of the game (ie introduce ascended armor with better stats and infusion slots) midway?
Totally agree with this sentiment. When Ascended Armor comes out, it will drop in the Fractals. I hadn’t thought about how Ascended Armor changes the leaderboard, but then again, I think a leaderboard was not the way to go. Ascended Fractal Armor drops were the way to go to show off how you were in the “lead” in Fractals. The leaders of the fractals need to be able to show that off in game, not on some website outside of Tyria.
I think it’s a decent point. It would be fine if it wasn’t a reward from the Fractal. As it stands, if you only play Engie, and you get this as a reward, it’s useless. Not a big deal in my opinion, but if it’s soul bound (it will be, just like dungeon specific runes) that means you can’t throw it in the Forge either. Going through a Fractal on an Engie, getting this as your Exotic drop will be a letdown plain and simple. Rewards shouldn’t be a letdown.
pro : doesn’t matter because….
cons: They took away somthing invested loads of time and Money and worked hard for. they take 81 rewards Level from me to only give me 30 back. no Matter what a game is doing.. if they start taking a way things Player earned and worked hard for… you just can’t trust em… they could with same arguments take away legendaries / pvp ranks / wvw ranks .
patrikan, I have seen that you have posted this in myriad threads. We all get it. Can you please stop mentioning it? I want to keep this thread confined to what you like about Fractals and what you dislike. No need to keep repeating ad nauseam your feeling on the issue. You have done it enough now. Thanks.
I wanted to make a Pro/Con Fractal thread for the new changes and also a place for suggestions for the new “Fractured” Content. This is a great place for questions concerning Fractals too like, “What happens to my existing AR once the update goes live?” Anyways, on to the list.
Pros:
Account Wide Fractal Levels—-Awesome!
Chest at the end of every Fractal level, not just even ones like the past.
Gold as well as loot.
New Fractals! Really looking forward to them!
Lowered level where Fractal Weapons can drop at (10)
Fixed Dredge Fractal to be in line (length-wise) with other Fractals.
Tiered the Fractals so that you don’t get 3 lengthier ones in a row (Hooray!)
Cons:
Fractal Weapons still require Transmutation Stones(?) Clarification needed EDIT: No Trans. Stn=ones needed after update! It’s a Pro now!
Level reset and leaderboards
No Ascended Fractal Armor or Ascended Fractal Weapons (only place Ascended is technically needed because of AR) EDIT: Ascended Armor when it arrives in the game, Fractal armor was not commented on
Questions I have:
Is there any plan to add unique Ascended Fractal Armor to the game that we can A.) get as drops, B.) Get from a currency like our pristine relics C.) Get from Fractal Relics or that we can trade fractal relics in for Pristine ones
Is there any chance of changing the Fractal weapons into “skins” or get them to be Ascended as drops? At the moment we have to use Trans stones on them and they are not ascended. It’s like, “Here’s this reward! Now spend money on a transmutation stone!” I absolutely adore the skins, it’s just kind of a backhanded reward at this point because we have to consume an item whereas other skins are an item and a stone at the same time.
I didn’t see any info on the Dredge Fractal changes that Colin outlined earlier this year. Is that happening? Are the fixes to the “invulnerable” Harpies being addressed as well? I saw that the wall was raised in the Jade Fractal and yet we still have really annoying bugs that have been in place since the Fractals came out. Would love to see those issues addressed.
I would also raise a suggestion that I posted elsewhere for people that made it past level 50: On the leaderboards it should say what level a player made it to and it should retroactively show what level they are from currently. So if a player made it to level 80, the leaderboard should reflect that.
Thanks for your time and thank you for this update. I can’t wait!
Other players please list your pros and cons below!

Fractal Armor made sense. Leaderboards don’t.
http://dulfy.net/2013/11/19/gw2-fractured-nov-26-update-details/
Dulfy seems to have the drop on the others for this one. Good stuff here. Much needed. Disappointed at the omission of one thing though; Fractal Armor. Leaderboards are cool, but armor is better. Heck, they even have a style in place because of the Fractal weapons and it’s the only place we “need” ascended stuff in the game.
